lower ninth ward projectnew housing development 1720 n. tennessee st. - new orleans, la Hurricane Katrina was one of the most horrific storms to hit New Orleans, Louisiana & the gulf coast on August 29, 2005. thousands of residents were affected by this storm leaving about 90 percent of the city under flood zones with homes destroyed & residents feeling helpless & trapped on top of their roofs of their homes. The lower ninth ward was one of many neighborhoods in New Orleans that had received most dreadful damages compared to other neighborhoods in the city. One importnat reasons was because of the man-made levees that failed to protect the land. This storm caused many of the rivers, the industrial canal and the bayou to overflow and surge in multiple directions, all causing horrific damages to the city.

Before Hurricane Katrina, the Lower Ninth ward district was one of the most historic and active neighborhoods throughout New Orleans’ history. Many residents & multiple generations of this neighborhood have over a 1oo years of history that all began in this district. Ever since Hurricane Katrina, the lower ninth is still struggling to recover it’s lost history that the storm took away from its residents. While the process of rebuilding this community has become a new journey, the “make it right foundation” sponsored by Brad Pitt, has committed and have already began redeveloping new homes that were originally destroyed the residents that have stayed loyal to their neighborhood, in which they will always call home. For some, this neighborhood and their property was all they had and are unable to relocate to any other place. This was a special opportunity for me to become involved in this community and make a impact for many families and lives.
