FLAUNDRAU-UNIVERSITY PLANETARIUM & SCIENCE CENTER at the university of Arizona

The goal of this design project is to replace the existing Flandrau Science Center and Planetarium into more a innovative and inviting space near the open mall of the University of Arizona campus. This design will serve as a public space to view scientific collections along with a private space for research purposes for the university. Currently, many of the exciting spaces in the existing building feels hidden behind closed doors with poorly designed spaces & feels visually inaccessible. The purpose of renovating this facility is to embellish the public experience from the university mall which is one of the most ‘iconic’ exterior spaces on campus. This structure will also bring a unique character to the campus and to provide the opportunity for this space to used by students, visitors, children & adults.

the most important phase of this project was addressing the missing parts of the building that were essential in order for the program to function properly such as mechanical spaces, vertical & horizontal circulation and egress. This particular development was necessary because this would graphically explain the ordering of the building parts in relation to a clear performance and site concept.

The purpose of developing this comprehensive process was to communicate graphically how the ordering systems of the program and the building as a whole is organized to optimize passive cooling, shading, ventilation, and other strategies to reduce the building’s carbon footprint and increase quality of life for the users.

Chicago is one of the most attractive cities in America where there are multiple opportunities to design skyscrapers. The proposed site is located at the corner of harrison ave. and wabash st. The idea was to develop a skyscraper involving a mixeduse development program located at an existing cta rail line. This particular railline is passing directly through the middle of the site. This presented an opportunity to develop a space where the urban context is the main theme of this project. This was also an opportunity to explore the means of density and incorporate multiple other conviences to address the public and local surroundings.

This historical district west of downtown tucson is transforming into a new level of urban density. Located between interstate 10 and the intersection of W. Congress & Avenida Del Convento, this mixed-use development complex is fully integrated with commercial-retail at the street level and residential units above. the benefit of this development is that this will attract more diversity, liveliness, activeness and enterprise within downtown tucson and will revolutionize the community into a urban, sustainable and transit-oriented environment.

This development is apart of the existing construction of the rio nuevo/gasden mission project. This master plan includes a light-rail streetcar linking from the gasden district, downtown tucson and the univeristy of arizona. This project aims strongly towards incorporating an urban fabric connecting to downtown tucson. This mixed-use design can be seen as the inception of accumulating density and encouraging residents to travel around the city through the means of public transportation.

lower ninth ward projectnew housing development 1720 n. tennessee st. - new orleans, la Hurricane Katrina was one of the most horrific storms to hit New Orleans, Louisiana & the gulf coast on August 29, 2005. thousands of residents were affected by this storm leaving about 90 percent of the city under flood zones with homes destroyed & residents feeling helpless & trapped on top of their roofs of their homes. The lower ninth ward was one of many neighborhoods in New Orleans that had received most dreadful damages compared to other neighborhoods in the city. One importnat reasons was because of the man-made levees that failed to protect the land. This storm caused many of the rivers, the industrial canal and the bayou to overflow and surge in multiple directions, all causing horrific damages to the city.

Before Hurricane Katrina, the Lower Ninth ward district was one of the most historic and active neighborhoods throughout New Orleans’ history. Many residents & multiple generations of this neighborhood have over a 1oo years of history that all began in this district. Ever since Hurricane Katrina, the lower ninth is still struggling to recover it’s lost history that the storm took away from its residents. While the process of rebuilding this community has become a new journey, the “make it right foundation” sponsored by Brad Pitt, has committed and have already began redeveloping new homes that were originally destroyed the residents that have stayed loyal to their neighborhood, in which they will always call home. For some, this neighborhood and their property was all they had and are unable to relocate to any other place. This was a special opportunity for me to become involved in this community and make a impact for many families and lives.

The mission of the Tucson Unity Center was to develop a stronger & active community in downtown Tucson. This is achieved by promoting distinctiveness, variety & diversity amongst all ages, youth, gender & ethnicities. One of the main goals of this program was to provide the best quality service for individuals with physical and mental disabilities & providing equal comfortable for a normal healthy human beings. The vision of this program was to interconnect the surrounding downtown districts and offer a new way to develop growth, unity and independent living. Designing this facility between Stone Ave. & Toole Ave. is an important site because it will create the opportunity to ressurect the old demolished streets of Council Ave. and Grosseta Ave. By reconstructing these two intersections, this will create an accessible pedestrian path and vehicular drop-off.

MASTERS PROJECT 2013: LOS ANGELES METRO PICO/ALISO TRANSIT STATION MIXED-USE COMMERCIAL/RETAIL TRANSIT CENTER BOYLE HEIGHTS DISTRICT - LOS ANGELES, CA

Manifesto My focus for this thesis project was to develop an urban infrastructural program that could impact local residents & industries of the Boyle Heights & Arts District neighborhoods near Downtown Los Angeles. My mission was to develop a program that will promote livability, accessibility, identity, opportunity, imagination, culture and public life for all people in both of these communities.

During this research, my comprehension of los angeles’ urban context consists a full site analysis of residential population, land uses, people, infrastructure, fabric, body, mind and soul. I believe that architectural & urban design draws together multiple strands of place-making, environmental stewardship, economic viability and social equity into the formation of places with distinct identity and beauty.

This construction serves beyond just a waiting area for pedestrians & commuters, but also serves as a unique sense of space for local residents. The purpose of this transit center is to demonstrate to commuters and pedestrians the advantages & opportunity of using public transportation. This is a special experience of life outside of the car in los angeles. This program provides numerous opportunties of using each space in the building program contradictorily. All of the spaces are compatable amongst one another in order to create a complete active and liveable urban culture with functional multi-use spaces. Another asset of this program was the communal connection provided for residents & children of this neighborhood which enhances the richness & life to this area in the boyle heights district inviting commuters to experience this special community in los angeles.
