Cruising gluten-free: Inside Royal Caribbean’s Celiac Cruise experience BY CINDY SOSROUTOMO TORONTO — To eat or not to eat. That is the question facing many people living with celiac disease while on vacation, when every meal can bring concerns about ingredients, preparation and cross-contamination. For Julia, a 32-year-old traveller from Halton Hills, Ont., those concerns became part of everyday life after she was diagnosed with celiac disease in November 2021. “My biggest concern with travel was access to safe food, the ability to communicate my needs with language barriers and the varying food labelling laws in different countries,” she told Travelweek. So when she discovered Celiac Cruise through social media, the idea of a vacation where she would not have to constantly question what was safe to eat immediately caught her attention. In February 2026, Julia and her partner boarded Royal Caribbean’s Symphony of the Seas for an Eastern Caribbean sailing booked through Celiac Cruise, an organization that partners with the cruise line to provide dedicated gluten-free vacation experiences. The seven-night itinerary sailed roundtrip from Miami with stops in Philipsburg, St. Maarten, Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas and Nassau, Bahamas. It was Julia’s first cruise. “We were impressed by the ship – it was very big,” she said. “We were slightly overwhelmed, but we were eager to enjoy our welcome lunch, which would be our first taste of the gluten-free food and dining experience.”

A CRUISE WITHIN A CRUISE Royal Caribbean has been hosting celiac cruises for the past six years in partnership with Celiac Cruise, which specializes in worry-free vacations for gluten-sensitive travellers. Guests book participating departures through Celiac Cruise and become part of a dedicated group onboard, with access to 100% glutenfree meals prepared specifically for the program. Royal Caribbean hosted its first Celiac Cruise in January 2020. The program has since expanded to nine sailings in 2026, visiting destinations across Australia, Europe, Alaska and the Caribbean. Another nine are planned for 2027 in the Caribbean and Mediterranean, including visits to The Bahamas and Perfect Day CocoCay. During each sailing, Royal Caribbean designates a private area where gluten-free meals and drinks are prepared and served. Guests in the

program receive wristbands and lanyards so crew members can identify them throughout the voyage. For Julia, that structure removed much of the mental load she normally associates with eating away from home. “If you book through Celiac Cruise, you’re given a wristband and access to completely dedicated gluten-free dining spaces and food,” she said. “Gluten is not allowed to enter the space and neither is anyone who is not part of the Celiac Cruise.” She said Celiac Cruise staff also worked with onboard teams before sailing to review ingredients, food labels and preparation procedures. “I felt safe the entire cruise and never questioned the food I was provided with,” she said.

TRAINING AND FOOD SAFETY According to a Royal Caribbean representative, the cruise line

partners with the Celiac Disease Foundation to help ensure menu items and food preparation on participating sailings follow appropriate celiac protocols. All Celiac Cruise sailings have a private space dedicated to preparing and serving food for guests in the group, while crew members across Royal Caribbean’s fleet receive allergen-awareness training to help them identify and accommodate dietary restrictions. The cruise line also offers glutenfree choices outside the dedicated Celiac Cruise program, with available options identified by signage at dining venues throughout its fleet and destinations. At Perfect Day CocoCay, for example, Royal Caribbean provides a dedicated gluten-free food station with glutenfree hamburger and hot dog buns. For Julia, even crew members outside the dedicated dining areas appeared to understand what the wristband meant. “The staff onboard were trained to notice our Celiac Cruise wristbands, and if we ordered something that wasn’t considered safe, they would let us know,” she said. “That gave me added comfort.”

ORDERING EVERYTHING Some of Julia’s favourite moments were experiences many other travellers might take for granted. “Being given a menu at dinner and being able to order everything that was listed” was one of the

biggest highlights of the trip, she told Travelweek.

and that it plans to continue working with Celiac Cruise.

So was returning to a buffet without having to scrutinize ingredients or ask how dishes had been prepared.

“Guest feedback is at the forefront of everything at Royal Caribbean and the celiac cruises have been wellreceived by guests. We look forward to continuing to deliver vacation experiences where our guests can make unforgettable memories together,” a Royal Caribbean representative told Travelweek.

“I didn’t have to ask one single question about food preparation, food safety or ingredients,” she said. “And I got to eat at a buffet again with so many options.” The sailing also delivered on the vacation side, with Julia pointing to the Caribbean ports, warm weather and exposure to new destinations among her highlights. She enjoyed the cruise so much that she said she would change very little about it. Her one minor suggestion was to move the nightly 10 p.m. gluten-free buffet to an earlier hour. “It was basically another meal, which is fantastic, but it was way too late for me to have another full meal,” she said. “We only went twice, so I do feel like we must have missed out on some great food options.” Overall, however, she described the experience as worry-free. “I felt entirely safe for the duration of the cruise, and we found most of the food to be great,” she said.

For travellers still nervous about managing dietary restrictions away from home, Julia recommends starting gradually. She suggests researching destinations carefully, using dietary translation cards where language could be an issue and practising advocating for dietary needs at restaurants closer to home before travelling farther afield. She also recommends travelling with someone who understands those needs and can help communicate if necessary. “Sometimes it gets emotionally exhausting,” she said. “Travel with someone you feel comfortable with and someone you know could help advocate for you if needed.”

The experience left a lasting impression: Julia and her partner are already planning to book another Celiac Cruise for February 2027.

And after her own first experience at sea, Julia has one more suggestion to add to the list:

Travelweek to host ‘AI Unleashed with Claude’ webinar with Colombia TORONTO — Travelweek is inviting Canadian travel advisors to discover how artificial intelligence can help them work smarter, save time and grow their businesses with an upcoming webinar, AI Unleashed with Claude. Taking place Sept. 23 from 2 – 3:30 p.m. ET, the free webinar will focus on practical applications of Claude,

research, content creation, itinerary development, client communications, document analysis, brainstorming and other time-consuming tasks. “AI is moving incredibly quickly, but travel advisors don’t need to become technology experts to benefit from it,” said Kinasz. “What they need are practical examples that show them how these tools can make their

actual working day easier. That’s what we’re going to focus on.” Kinasz says the opportunity extends well beyond using AI as a writing assistant. “The real power of AI is not asking it to write one email for you. It’s

starting to identify the repetitive work you do every week and asking, ‘How much of this could AI help me with?’ Once you begin thinking that way, the productivity gains can become significant.”

CLAUDE TAKES CENTRE STAGE The webinar will focus specifically on Claude and how travel professionals can incorporate the platform into their businesses. Participants will see examples of how AI can help organize and analyze large amounts of information, develop and refine client-facing content, assist with destination and itinerary research and speed up administrative and creative tasks. Kinasz says the objective is not to replace the expertise travel advisors bring to their clients, but to give them more time to use it. “Travel is still an incredibly human business. Relationships, experience, judgement and trust are what great advisors bring to the table,” she said. “AI should support that. If technology can take some of the lower-value work off an advisor’s plate and give

them more time to sell, connect with clients and provide great service, that’s a win.”

DESTINATION SPOTLIGHT: COLOMBIA The webinar will also feature Juan Sebastian Sanchez Chica of ProColombia for a special destination segment highlighting Colombia’s expanding tourism opportunities. Colombia has been strengthening its presence in the Canadian market. “Canada and Colombia are closer than we think – not just geographically, but in how easily our people connect,” says Sanchez. Colombia’s tourism proposition spans sustainability, community-based tourism, luxury, culture, wellness, nature and adventure, sun and beach and other rapidly developing segments. ProColombia has also

been encouraging travellers and the trade to look beyond individual gateway cities and consider the country’s dramatically different tourism regions. “We want to give you the tools to really understand the destination and connect with the right partners,” says Sanchezt.

WORKING SMARTER WITH AI For Kinasz, AI Unleashed is ultimately about helping advisors move beyond experimenting with AI and begin putting it to productive use. “There’s a huge difference between occasionally playing around with AI and actually integrating it into the way you work,” she said. “Travel advisors are busy. If we can show them ways to reclaim even a few hours every week while improving

what they’re producing for their clients, that’s immediately valuable.” And she believes learning how to use the technology is quickly becoming an important business skill. “AI isn’t something that’s coming five years from now. It’s already here,” added Kinasz. “The advisors who start learning these tools now have an opportunity to become more efficient, more creative and ultimately spend more of their time doing the things that actually grow their businesses.” AI Unleashed with Claude takes place Tuesday, Sept. 23 from 2 – 3:30 p.m. ET. Temple of the Tooth, Sri Lanka Opening ceremony of Philadelphia’s new cruise terminal

DESTINATIONS Cuba’s tourism sector has fallen sharply in 2026, with international arrivals down 62% from January through July compared with the same period last year, according to the National Office of Statistics and Information. The country received about 419,000 visitors during the period, versus 1.1 million in 2025. The decline follows increased U.S. pressure on Cuba, including an energy embargo and sanctions targeting tourism-related businesses. Several hotel groups, including Meliá, Iberostar and Royalton, have suspended contracts, while Visa and Mastercard payment gateways have been withdrawn. Major airlines, including Canadian carriers, have also suspended flights after refuelling restrictions were introduced. Cuba welcomed about 4.3 million tourists in 2019, when tourism generated roughly US$3 billion annually. Canadian travellers can now obtain a Sri Lankan tourist visa free of charge for stays of up to 30 days. As of May 25, 2026, Canadian nationals are eligible for a free Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) allowing double entry during the 30-day period. Travellers must still apply for the ETA online before departure. Those wishing to remain in Sri Lanka for more than 30 days will need to apply for an extension and pay the applicable visa fee. The

Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Toronto notes that ETA fees paid before May 25, 2026 are non-refundable. To apply for the free-of-charge Visa, go to www. eta.gov.lk.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. and PhilaPort have officially opened Philadelphia’s new cruise terminal, establishing a permanent base for cruise operations in the city. The terminal supports NCLH’s sevenyear agreement with PhilaPort through March 31, 2033, and is expected to generate about 2,185 direct and indirect jobs and nearly US$300 million in annual economic output across Pennsylvania. The expanded Trafalgar portfolio will go on sale in Q4 2026 ahead of the Black Friday booking period and will include more than 600 itineraries across 75 countries. The brand will span five travel categories – Tours, Small Groups, River Cruises, Rail Journeys and Group Sales – along with three value tiers: saver, classic and premium. According to TTC Tour Brands, the new structure is designed to make it easier for advisors to match clients with the right travel style and price point while retaining the product characteristics currently associated

with Costsaver, Trafalgar and Insight Vacations. “Bringing these experiences together under Trafalgar allows us to preserve what advisors and their clients value while removing layers that no longer make it easy to do business with us,” said Melissa DaSilva, Deputy CEO and Chief Sales Officer, TTC Tour Brands. “We want an advisor to be able to come to Trafalgar with a client and find the right way for them to travel, whether that means a premium tour, a small group, a river cruise or a completely different experience as their needs evolve.” Under the new structure, the product currently sold as Insight Vacations will form Trafalgar’s premium offering, retaining the elevated hotels, dining and experiences associated with the brand. Costsaver products will move into Trafalgar’s saver tier, maintaining the flexibility and value proposition currently offered by Costsaver.

The classic tier will represent the Trafalgar experience advisors know today. For 2027 departures, existing itineraries, experiences and pricing will remain unchanged. To help advisors prepare for the transition, TTC Tour Brands has launched the Your New Era with Trafalgar hub on its Travel Agent Portal, or TAP, with information, training and sales resources. DeNure Tours highlights Newfoundland with $200 advisor booking bonus Newfoundland’s dramatic coastlines, colourful communities and rich cultural heritage continue to make it a favourite with Canadian travellers, and DeNure Tours says the destination remains one of its longstanding specialties. The operator has been selling Newfoundland for more than 55 years and is encouraging travel advisors to consider the province for clients looking for a memorable Canadian vacation. For advisors, however, the challenge can be in the logistics. Newfoundland is large, with many of its most rewarding experiences spread across significant distances. Coordinating transportation, accommodations, sightseeing and meals can quickly become complicated. DeNure says its escorted tours are designed to remove much of that work from both advisors and their clients. Transportation, accommodations, sightseeing and many meals are included, while guests travel with an experienced Tour Director throughout the journey. The itineraries are also designed to showcase both Newfoundland’s best-known attractions and lesserknown communities. Clients can take in rugged coastal landscapes, visit colourful towns and learn more about Newfoundland’s heritage without having to navigate

Emerald Kaia heads to the Indian Ocean with two new 13-day voyages Emerald Cruises & Tours is expanding its luxury yacht offering with two new 13-day Indian Ocean itineraries aboard its newest yacht, Emerald Kaia.

Guests will also have opportunities to discover UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Swahili culture and the Indian Ocean’s diverse marine ecosystems.

With its limited guest capacity and ability to reach remote ports and anchorages, these new Indian Ocean deployments offer clients a yacht-style approach to exploring the Seychelles and East African coast.

The Seychelles is made up of 115 islands scattered across the Indian Ocean and is known for its granite landscapes, clear waters, protected marine reserves and biodiversity. Many islands remain uninhabited, adding to the sense of ‘splendid isolation’.

Launching exclusively in November 2026, the 13-day Seychelles & Indian Ocean Adventure voyages will sail between Mahé, Seychelles, and Mombasa, Kenya, taking guests to remote islands, historic settlements and marine environments across the Seychelles, Tanzania and Kenya. Carrying just 128 guests, Emerald Kaia is designed to combine the intimacy of yacht cruising with immersive destination experiences. Its smaller size allows the vessel to access secluded anchorages and ports that are beyond the reach of larger ocean ships, giving travellers opportunities to explore less-visited destinations throughout the region. The itinerary features calls at Mahé, La Digue and Praslin, as well as Farquhar Atoll and Aldabra Atoll in the Seychelles. The voyage continues along the East African coast with visits to Kilwa Kisiwani, Mafia Island, Zanzibar and Mombasa. Experiences along the way range from snorkelling among coral reefs and encountering giant tortoises to visiting ancient island settlements and exploring local markets. Zip lining in the Seychelles

By extending the itinerary to Tanzania and Kenya, the voyages will also introduce guests to destinations along the East African coast that are less frequently featured on traditional cruise itineraries. Two departures are scheduled: Nov. 17, 2026, from Mahé to Mombasa, and Nov. 29, 2026, from Mombasa to Mahé. Emerald Kaia is the latest addition to Emerald Cruises’ growing luxury yacht fleet. The yacht features contemporary accommodations, expansive open-air spaces and personalized service. The 13-day sailings include accommodations, airport transfers, gratuities, complimentary WiFi, breakfast, lunch and dinner onboard, as well as a selection of included excursions. An important heads up: as of June 2026 the site for Emerald Cruises & Tours updated to Emerald.cruises. Canadian travellers, and travel advisors, will continue to be directed to dedicated local content, offers, itineraries, support and event information via Emerald.cruises.
