Say ‘I do’ to more: Iberostar has perks for couples, groups and advisors
I
berostar Beachfront Resorts is highlighting its destination wedding offerings across Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica and Aruba, with customizable celebrations, group accommodations and promotions aimed at helping travel advisors build wedding business. The company’s wedding options include everything from intimate ceremonies to larger celebrations, with couples able to personalize decor, culinary stations and entertainment rather than choosing from a set of rigid packages. One option is ‘Nature of Love’, which provides a baseline ceremony that couples can customize to reflect their individual style and preferences. For travel advisors, the company is also promoting incentives tied to wedding and group bookings, along with resort options designed to accommodate guests with different budgets and vacation preferences.
PROMOTIONS & PREVIEW STAYS For couples planning a smaller celebration, Iberostar’s ‘Perfect 10 Promo’ starts at US$950 for the couple and eight guests. Available at participating resorts in Mexico, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic and Aruba, the offer includes a ceremony set-up, officiant, personal flowers, sparkling wine, cake, special turndown service and à la carte dinner reservations. The promotion is bookable from May 1 to Dec. 20, 2026, for travel through Oct. 31, 2027, using promo code PERFECT10. Iberostar is also offering a preview-stay promotion for couples who want to visit a resort before committing to a wedding booking. The offer provides up to 30% off a two-night stay at participating properties, giving couples an opportunity to tour venues and meet preferred vendors. Couples who book their wedding within 15 days of their visit can receive up to a US$400 credit toward their final balance.
Sustainability is another part of Iberostar’s wedding offering through its ‘Wave of Change’ initiative. The company says its weddings are free of single-use plastics, feature 100% responsibly sourced seafood at receptions and use native, sustainable floral designs.
RESORT OPTIONS FOR VARYING NEEDS Iberostar’s interconnected resort complexes accommodate wedding groups with different preferences and budgets. Guests can stay within the same complex while choosing among JOIA by Iberostar, Iberostar Selection and Iberostar Waves properties. JOIA offers an adults-only luxury option, while Iberostar Selection provides a premium resort experience and Iberostar Waves caters to guests looking for a more casual and activity-focused stay. The approach allows couples to bring together family and friends with varying needs while keeping the group connected for wedding events. In Mexico, properties highlighted for weddings include Iberostar Selection Cancun, Iberostar Selection Coral Level, JOIA Paraíso by Iberostar, Iberostar Selection Paraíso Lindo and Maya, Iberostar Waves Mar & Beach, Iberostar Selection Riviera Cancun, Iberostar Selection Playa Mita and Iberostar Cozumel. The company points to features such as rooftop terraces, lush jungle settings and overwater piers across its Mexican properties, providing different backdrops for wedding celebrations and group events. In the Dominican Republic, options include JOIA Bávaro by Iberostar, Iberostar Selection Bávaro Suites, Iberostar Selection Coral Bávaro, Iberostar Waves Dominicana and Punta Cana, Iberostar Selection Hacienda Dominicus and Iberostar Waves Costa Dorada. The destination offers a mix of boutique-style luxury, beachfront settings and adults-only options, giving advisors flexibility when matching resorts to different wedding groups.
7
Jamaica’s wedding properties include JOIA Rose Hall by Iberostar, Iberostar Selection Rose Hall Suites and Iberostar Rose Hall Beach, now an adults-only property. The company highlights Jamaican touches such as bamboo gazebos, sunset reggae cocktail hours and custom jerk-spice culinary stations. In Aruba, JOIA Aruba by Iberostar is positioned as a luxury option on Eagle Beach, with contemporary coastal design, oceanfront suites and access to an 18hole championship golf course.
GROUP BENEFITS & ADVISOR PERKS Iberostar is encouraging travel advisors to register wedding group bookings through StarAgents.com, whether the bookings are made directly or through a preferred tour operator. Registered bookings earn points that can be redeemed for complimentary vacations. The company is also highlighting trade incentives, including a 15% commission on wedding-day events and double StarAgent points on group room blocks. Standard group concessions typically begin at one complimentary room for every 10 to 15 paid rooms, while the couple can receive automatic roomcategory upgrades. To help secure preferred dates, Iberostar recommends submitting group space requests early. Each property limits weddings to a maximum of two per day, which the company says supports a more personalized experience.
Once the initial deposit is paid and the room block is confirmed, couples are connected with an on-site wedding coordinator to manage design details, timelines and local vendors. Iberostar also recommends that couples consider symbolic ceremonies in Mexico and the Dominican Republic, completing legal paperwork at home before travelling to avoid local blood-testing requirements, translation fees and other administrative considerations associated with a legal ceremony abroad. Advisors can track group benefits and rewards by entering booking confirmation numbers on StarAgents. com, helping ensure eligible points and incentives are recorded from the outset. CULTURAL WEDDINGS GO CUSTOM
For couples with specific celebratory needs, authenticity and attention to detail make these destinations shine above the rest BY JEN O’BRIEN
M
odern fêtes are anything but formulaic, and that includes destination weddings. Long gone are the days of standardized all-inclusive wedding packages with zero personalization. In fact, destination wedding offerings around the world are trending entirely in the opposite direction: if you can dream it, they can do it. This is especially good news for couples planning cultural destination weddings abroad, which require specialized care and attention to detail. “Across the board, we’re seeing much greater demand for destination wedding ceremonies that fit the specific desires of couples,” says John K. Hawks, executive director of the Destination Wedding & Honeymoon Specialists Association. “Destination weddings are now a much more common choice for
couples, so they know they can ask for the same [customization] they might request if they were saying their vows at home.” Bespoke service, especially when it comes to cultural considerations, has become so important that, according to Hawks, many resorts, especially in popular tourist destinations, have prioritized upskilling staff on the intricacies of celebratory traditions and expanding their vendor networks to cater to specific dietary and ceremonial needs. Hyper-personalization is indeed emerging as the new norm, but planning a cultural celebration – especially overseas – requires finding a venue that also offers a fine balance of flexibility, expertise, access and organizational precision. With this in mind, we set out to

SOUTH ASIAN WEDDINGS With large guest lists, rich customs, specific dietary requirements and festivities that run the better part of a week, South Asian celebrations can be among the most complex weddings to plan and execute abroad. Mexico has responded by emerging as a go-to spot for these grand multi-day, multievent celebrations.
“One wedding that truly stands out was a multi-day celebration where the couple envisioned bringing a traditional Indian wedding atmosphere into a beachfront setting without compromising authenticity,” says Gina Jimenez, Corporate Director of Weddings at Velas Resorts. “To achieve this, our team coordinated closely with international and local vendors to design a fully customized Mandap overlooking the ocean, incorporating traditional floral elements, intricate textiles, and a structure adapted to withstand coastal conditions without losing its cultural essence. For the Baraat, we transformed the arrival experience into a vibrant beachfront procession, complete with live dhol players.” On the Caribbean coast, Secrets Playa Mujeres and its neighbouring

On the Pacific coast, Grand Velas Los Cabos is particularly wellversed in such celebrations, pairing deep cultural understanding with operational meticulousness. highlight, featuring a procession kicked off by a high-energy batucada performance followed by a deejay performing from a moving pickup truck while family and friends danced alongside. “The experience culminated at the wedding gazebo on the beach, where the groom’s arrival on horseback completed the moment,” says Bermundez.
Weddings Manager Yamina Bermundez recalls one such celebration, which unfolded over four days and gradually transformed different areas of the resort complex into a series of distinct yet connected experiences, from a mehndi garden party to a Sangeet with custom-designed stage. The Baraat was a particular

“For couples incorporating Chinese traditions, we find that tea ceremonies are among the most requested elements, and these are beautifully hosted within the privacy and comfort of a spacious hotel suite. Our commitment is to create a seamless and elevated experience, regardless of the cultural elements involved,” she adds.
The lively Condado area of San Juan is particularly well-known for its inclusive atmosphere. La Concha Resort, an oceanfront property with a striking seashell-shaped restaurant and lively nightlife as well as its adults-only sister property, Condado Ocean Club, are both great picks for same-sex celebrations. “Our team embraces non-traditional wedding formats and enjoys helping couples create celebrations that feel authentic to them. Whether it’s dual-aisle ceremonies, custom seating arrangements or surprise
performances, we collaborate closely with couples and planners to make every detail feel intentional and meaningful,” says La Concha’s Catering Director, Irene Alvarez. “We also work with trusted local vendors and partners who understand the importance of creating a welcoming and celebratory spirit for every couple,” she adds.

Few properties can cater to couples as well as Casa Palopó, a breathtaking luxury boutique hotel with 15 rooms and suites boasting natural beauty, cultural richness and the calming energy of Lake Atitlán. “Casa Palopó offers couples the opportunity to incorporate meaningful spiritual and cultural elements into their wedding celebrations in ways that feel authentic, intentional and deeply connected to the spirit of Lake Atitlán,” says Weddings and Events Sales Executive Ana Paula Zedan. “One of the most requested experiences is a traditional Mayan blessing ceremony led by a local shaman, which can be integrated into the wedding itself or offered as a private ritual before the ceremony begins. JEWISH WEDDINGS On top of its beautiful scenery, world-class beaches and convenient location, The Bahamas has emerged as a top destination for Jewish weddings abroad, offering everything from oceanfront chuppahs and kosher cuisine to Shabbatfriendly amenities. Set within the sprawling Baha Mar resort destination in Nassau, the Grand Hyatt Baha Mar may be the best equipped hotel in the Caribbean to host a Jewish celebration. The property boasts customizable chuppah set-ups, on-site eruv, both a kosher meat and dairy kitchen as well as rabbinic access and religious-service support via the
property’s strong relationship with Chabad of Bahamas. My role is to help couples and their families feel comfortable, heard and confident that the details that matter most to them – from kosher dining needs to cultural traditions and religious observances – are understood and thoughtfully handled,” says Jennifer Goodman, Event Sales Manager at Grand Hyatt Baha Mar. “We can offer kosher menus for weddings, along with access to several kosher dining options on property, including a kosher food truck and pre-packaged kosher meals. We can also support Shabbat services and minyan options.” Beyond traditional offerings, couples can add Bahamian flair to their celebrations by hiring the property’s resident flock of flamingos to attend the Bedeken (pre-wedding ritual), mingle with guests during cocktail hour or even walk down the aisle during the wedding.

SIX HONEYMOON TRENDS TO WATCH IN 2027
BY CINDY SOSROUTOMO
Love, adventure and a little luxury are reshaping the honeymoon, with couples embracing safari-and-beach escapes, wellness retreats and luxury yacht getaways
T
he honeymoon is getting a makeover, with couples increasingly swapping the one-sizefits-all beach escape for trips that are more adventurous, wellness-focused, flexible and, in some cases, split into two. For some newlyweds, that means a quick romantic getaway right after the wedding followed by the big safari months later; for others, it could mean soaking in a Japanese onsen, sailing the Mediterranean aboard a luxury yacht or simply travelling in October instead of fighting the summer crowds. And as 2027 approaches, the honeymoon is looking less like a post-wedding obligation and more like a chance to design the ultimate trip for two. Here are six trends to watch.
TRAVELWEEK • The Romance Guide
17
THE HONEYMOON IN TWO PARTS Why plan one honeymoon when you can have two? The rise of shorter, more flexible trips is making the mini-moon an increasingly appealing way to celebrate immediately after the wedding, followed by a longer getaway when time, money and schedules allow. KAYAK Canada’s 2026 What the Future Report found that nearly 61% of surveyed travellers plan to take several shorter trips this year, while 51% want travel plans they can change at the last minute. The report also found that travellers are increasingly embracing a slower pace, with 67% saying relaxation and mental reset are top priorities and 46% saying travelling more slowly helps clear their head. That approach can be especially appealing for couples who get married during a busy travel season but want their big trip at a better time of year. A June wedding could be followed by a few nights at a nearby luxury resort, for example, with the real honeymoon postponed until fall for a safari in Kenya or a foliage-filled escape to Japan. It also gives couples more freedom to make the honeymoon fit their lives instead of forcing everything into one expensive, high-pressure trip.
SAFARI + BEACH DOUBLE-HEADER It’s hard to beat a honeymoon that begins with lions, elephants and dramatic sunsets and ends with your feet in the sand. The bush-and-beach combination continues to gain popularity, particularly in Africa and the Indian Ocean. Kenya and Tanzania are natural starting points, followed by beach time in Zanzibar or the Seychelles. South Africa offers another compelling mix, allowing couples to combine a safari with Cape Town, wine country and a coastal stay. The trend is also moving beyond Africa. Sri Lanka is emerging as an alternative for couples who want wildlife and beach time in the same trip, with Yala National Park offering leopard-viewing opportunities before a few days on the coast. The appeal is easy to understand: couples get two completely different vacations in one. One half is about adventure and discovery, the other about doing absolutely nothing – ideally from a beautiful beachfront lounger. South Africa is also making a notable move up the honeymoon rankings. In Virtuoso’s 2027 Luxe Report, the destination entered the top 10 for honeymoons for the first time, while Greece took the No. 1 spot, followed by Bali and the Maldives.
Barcelona, Spain
18 NON-JULY HONEYMOONS Forget the idea that a honeymoon has to happen in peak summer. Shoulder-season travel is becoming increasingly attractive, particularly for couples who want better weather, fewer crowds or simply a different version of a destination they’ve dreamed about visiting. A 2026 survey of 100 Canadian travel advisors conducted by Virtuoso found that 74% have clients choosing shoulder-season travel to avoid peak crowds. Nearly 60% said avoiding crowds was the primary reason, compared with 26% who cited lower prices. That opens up some terrific honeymoon possibilities. Think Japan in autumn rather than spring, Greece in September or October rather than July and Italy in May or October when the pace can be considerably more relaxed. Japan in particular is having a moment. The destination took the No. 1 spot in Virtuoso’s 2027 global luxury travel rankings, while also ranking sixth among honeymoon destinations. Greece, meanwhile, knocked Italy out of the top honeymoon spot. For couples who don't need to travel immediately after the wedding, moving the trip a few months could mean the difference between battling crowds and feeling like they have the place to themselves.
Bali, Indonesia
WELLNESS GETS AN UPGRADE A couples massage is nice. A honeymoon designed around actually feeling fantastic when you get home? Even better. Hilton’s newly released 2027 Trends Report, based on a global survey of more than 14,000 travellers, found that nearly two-thirds (65%) actively seek experiences that calm the body and reset the nervous system, while 76% say travel allows them to recharge mentally and physically in ways they cannot easily achieve at home. That could translate into a wellness-focused honeymoon at a destination such as Bali, Thailand or the Maldives, with private villas, couples’ treatments, yoga, healthy cuisine and plenty of time with absolutely nothing scheduled. Brands such as Six Senses, Aman and COMO have made this kind of high-end wellness experience a major part of their appeal, while resorts in destinations from St. Lucia to Portugal can combine traditional honeymoon romance with spa and restorative experiences. Expedia Canada’s 2026 Island Hot List also identified St. Lucia as one of the year’s leading islands for romantic escapes, with searches up 125%, while Porto Santo was highlighted for wellness and relaxation. The new luxury, in other words, may simply be feeling completely rested when the honeymoon is over.

LUXURY CRUISING BOOM Cruising hasn't traditionally been the first thing that comes to mind when couples picture a honeymoon, but that may be changing as luxury hotel brands take their hospitality to the water. The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection is one of the most prominent examples, and demand appears to be building quickly. The company reported record year-to-date bookings of US$237 million through the second quarter of 2026, up 46% year over year, while second-quarter bookings alone rose 35%. And the luxury-yacht field is getting crowded in the best possible way. Four Seasons Yachts launched Four Seasons I in March 2026, with suites featuring expansive terraces and private plunge pools, along with curated culinary, wellness and cultural experiences. That gives honeymooners an intriguing alternative to a traditional resort: unpack once, wake up somewhere new and have a luxury hotel experience at sea. A Mediterranean sailing could combine stops in Greece, Italy and Croatia, while an Alaska voyage could pair dramatic scenery with a pre- or post-cruise stay. For couples who want something more adventurous, expedition cruising opens the door to Antarctica, the Galápagos or other remote destinations.
Santorini, Greece
Bangkok, Thailand
FORGET THE “PERFECT HONEYMOON” For years, honeymoons have been sold as the ultimate trip – the once-in-a-lifetime escape that has to be beautiful, romantic, Instagram-worthy and completely flawless. But the pressure to get everything right may finally be fading. Hilton’s 2027 Trends Report calls the shift “The Rise of ‘Ish,’” reflecting travellers’ growing willingness to let go of the perfect vacation and define a trip on their own terms. More than half of travellers (54%) say they feel some pressure to have the perfect trip, while 28% are more likely to leave room for spontaneity and figure things out as they go than commit to a fixed itinerary. That idea fits particularly well with the modern honeymoon. Maybe the hotel doesn’t have the perfect view every night. Maybe one day rains. Maybe the couple skips the famous restaurant because they’d rather linger over lunch somewhere local. Maybe the honeymoon is split into two trips instead of one. And perhaps that is exactly the point. For couples starting their lives together, the best honeymoon may no longer be the one that looks perfect on paper – it may be the one that feels unmistakably like them.

THREE RESORTS, THREE SETTINGS At the flagship Sandals Montego Bay, couples can hold ceremonies overlooking the beach at the resort where the Sandals brand began. The resort’s transformation includes new Swim-Up Suites and Oceanview accommodations, as well as new dining and social venues including Jamaica’s first waterfront Buccan, Bay Roc Rum Club, Scrimshaw and Parisol Beach Club. These additions provide more options for everything from rehearsal dinners and casual gatherings to honeymoon stays following the wedding. Sandals Caribbean Cay, meanwhile, is leaning into its offshore-island setting.
Club on Sandals Cay also gives wedding groups another waterfront option for celebrations. At Sandals South Coast, the backdrop is more secluded, with the resort set within a 500-acre nature preserve. Recent and upcoming additions include BLUM, serving Jamaica’s Blue Mountain coffee, Butch’s Island Chop House, refreshed Overwater Butler Villas and the brand’s first Silver Sun Beachfront Club Two Queen Junior Suites. The new two-queen room category is aimed in part at giving wedding parties and groups more flexible accommodation options, particularly for friends or family members travelling together. 14 questions every couple should ask about cruise weddings
BY CINDY SOSROUTOMO

reaming of saying “I do” at sea? Cruise weddings are making waves with couples looking for a celebration that combines travel, romance
and built-in value. From venues with ocean views to guest accommodations and dining, a wedding at sea offers a unique alternative to a traditional wedding. We sat down with Koreen McNutt, Vice President of North American Trade Sales at Virgin Voyages, to answer some of the most common questions couples have about planning their big day on the water.
How far in advance should we book a cruise wedding? “The sooner, the better, but we adapt and tailor to our couples’ visions and timeframes. Our wedding program can hold up to 16 cabins for 30 days while you sort your guest list, but popular sailings go fast. Give yourself some runway – your guests will thank you for it, and so will your stress levels.”
What type of wedding venues are onboard? “We have three stunning options. The Perch is an openair deck with 360-degree ocean views. The Wake is one of our gorgeous restaurants with the ship’s wake stretching behind you. And The Scene is an intimate indoor space with more privacy. Currently, our largest package hosts up to 50 guests so there’s a venue to match whatever you’re envisioning.”
What do cruise wedding packages typically include? “Every package comes with a Wedding Specialist before

you sail, an onboard coordinator on the day, a private venue, a member of the ship team leadership as the officiant, music, décor, cake and florals. Think of that as your foundation, then you build from there: live musicians, upgraded flowers and spa treatments. Cruise fares are separate but here’s the thing: your guests’ accommodations, dining and entertainment are already covered in the voyage. That’s a remarkable value.”
What kind of support do you offer during the planning stage and on the wedding day? “You get a dedicated Wedding Specialist from the moment you book, who stays with you through every decision before you ever step foot on the ship. Then on the day itself, your onboard coordinator takes the baton. There is no awkward handoff – just two people who know your wedding inside and out, making sure everything lands exactly right.”
What is the average starting cost for a wedding at sea? “Currently, packages start at US$4,000 for an intimate elopement-style ceremony, $5,000 for up to four guests, and $8,000 for the full celebration with up to 50 people. That’s the ceremony package. Total spend depends on your guest count, cabin choices and add-ons. But compare that to the average traditional wedding cost and do the math. Getting married at sea starts to look very smart, very quickly.”

How do you handle legal marriage requirements and documentation? “Our onboard ceremonies are symbolic rather than legally binding, which honestly is a feature – not a limitation. The legal paperwork gets handled before or after the voyage based on wherever you call home. What that means is you get the full ceremony experience without the administrative chaos of navigating maritime law in international waters. Your Wedding Specialist will walk you through how other couples typically handle the legal side. It’s simpler than people expect.”
Can we incorporate elements both onboard the ship and in port? “I love this question because it’s exactly the kind of creative thinking we want couples to bring. Port days open up some incredible possibilities that couples can arrange on their own while being mindful of the all-aboard time. Your Wedding Specialist is your collaborator so the earlier you bring up the idea, the more likely we can make it a reality.”
What contingency plans are in place if weather or itinerary changes affect the wedding day? “We plan for the unexpected from day one. Ceremony details are locked in at least 45 days out. If something shifts, your Wedding Specialist moves quickly so you don’t have to. We always have alternative venues ready. The ocean is a little unpredictable – your wedding day doesn’t have to be.”
Are we able to bring in outside vendors? “We offer florals and hair services through our own team, all vetted and ship-ready. For anything beyond that, your Wedding Specialist is the person to have that conversation with early on. Every sailing has its own logistics and we want to make sure any outside element is set up to actually work. Bring your wish list and we’ll figure it out together.”

Can we incorporate our own cultural or religious traditions? “Couples write their own vows, choose their own music and shape the ceremony to reflect who they are. We’ve helped couples weave in all kinds of meaningful cultural and personal touches. My advice? Share what matters to you early. The more we know, the more we can honour it.”
What are some commonly overlooked costs associated with weddings at sea that we should budget for early on? “Cruise fares for guests are often the biggest overlooked expense since they sit outside the wedding package itself. Couples should also budget for optional enhancements such as upgraded florals, live music or a DJ, as well as pre- and post-voyage travel and hotel stays, particularly for destination sailings. The advantage is that many guest expenses typically associated with a traditional wedding weekend – including dining, onboard entertainment and activities – are already part of the voyage experience.”
Do you offer group discounts and other group perks for weddings? “Yes, through the Weddings program. Groups get 10% off voyage fares, a bar tab per cabin that scales with

how long you’re sailing, up to 30 days to hold cabins while you finalize your guest list, as well as pre-voyage dining coordination. There’s no rigid minimum for a group – it’s really about bringing people together for something special.”
What happens if a guest cancels last-minute? “Guests can join a Wedding group up to 45 days before sailing, which gives you a solid window to manage changes as they come. Individual guest cancellations don’t have to unravel everything – your Wedding Specialist will walk you through how it interacts with your group’s overall structure and perks. It’s a conversation worth having early on so there are no surprises.”
What happens if the cruise line ends up cancelling the cruise, for whatever reason? “In the rare event that happens, we don’t just leave you stranded. We work with you directly to find the right path forward, whether that’s rebooking on another sailing or figuring out alternatives. Your Wedding Specialist stays with you through it. We’d also always recommend looking at Voyage Protection as part of your planning because life is beautifully unpredictable and it’s good to be covered.” For more information, go to virginvoyages.com.

Smaller wedding parties can also extend the celebration beyond the vows. Other options include private beach dinners, helicopter tours, spa treatments and local cooking or rum-making classes.
ADDING A SENSE OF PLACE Couples can also incorporate local culture into the wedding itself, from fresh seafood and pepperpot to traditional black rum cake and live steel pan music.
