MYT H MEMORY A journey through Northern Ireland and Dublin where ancient myth, lived history and modern cultural renewal come together By Vivian Vassos

10 TRAVEL PROFESSIONAL

F E A T U R E Dublin, Ireland

dare not anger the other people,” Dermot Friel tells us, while pointing out over his fields, past his small drove of donkeys (they’re good luck, apparently) to a circle of mature trees, including a lone Hawthorn. Friel is standing in front of one of his glamping Fairy Tree Lodges, a trio of container-style units with all the modern amenities, hot tub included. He’s explaining the legend of the “other” people, ancient mystical beings that inhabit the underworld at the roots of lone Hawthorns, and how he’s planning a walking trail that meanders past the circle, but not too close. This is Ireland, full of myth – the land of Gulliver, a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, leprechauns and little people. I’m on a group fam trip for travel agents hosted by Tourism Ireland and TourRadar, and we’re in Northern Ireland, in a town called Swatragh. Friel is the owner/manager of Friels Irish Pub, run by his family for a century. He’s also the creator of Gorta: The Famine Story, at Friels, a tourist attraction that tells of one man’s mission to feed the hungry during the Great Potato Famine of the mid-1800s. A famine pot was discovered when Friel was doing some work on the site and, with research, he discovered the doctor that lived in the current location of his pub was serving soup out of that same pot through his surgery’s tiny window to those in need. A million people fled Ireland during this time, another million succumbed to starvation. A fair amount of the world’s Irish diaspora, particularly in Canada, Australia and the United States, can attribute their roots to this exodus, making Ireland a top destination for family heritage and history travel. According to Tourism Ireland, Canada has emerged as one of Ireland’s most important growth markets for overseas tourism, now ranking as the fourth‑largest source of international tourism revenue. The country has seen a surge in Canadian visitors, rising by 35 per cent since 2023, reflecting both strong demand and Ireland’s increasing appeal among Canadian travellers. This rise is also showing up at the tourist attraction level. “We’ve seen an incredible 78 per cent increase in Canadian visitors this year with more than 80 per cent indicating a visit to Titanic Belfast was central to their decision to travel to the island of Ireland,” says Tiernan McGee, leisure sales manager at Titanic Bel-

Giant's Causeway, Northern Ireland

fast, the interactive museum dedicated to the ill-fated ocean liner. In 2025, Titanic Belfast welcomed just shy of one million visitors and, since opening in 2012, continues to be the most-visited attraction in Northern Ireland. “And working with the travel trade across all markets, especially Canada, is an integral part of our identity,” says McGee. Walking through the museum, hearing the recordings of actual voices of survivors echoing over the speakers, and reading the desperate SOS dispatches to neighbouring ships is another sobering experience, along with seeing the two-storey-high wall etched with survivors’ names and those that perished. Northern Ireland is known for its troubles; more to the point, The Troubles. The walled city of Derry (or Londonderry, as Unionists call it), has been the frontline of the fight for justice for all. Thankfully, this 30year conflict that spanned 1968 to 1998 is in the past. The Peace Museum documents the efforts in conflict resolution, nonviolence and community initiatives. Families that once fought for their rights against those SUMMER EDITION 2026 11

considered privileged have come together to build an ongoing peaceful Derry. And not just in Derry. Before leaving Belfast, we take turns riding with local guides – former enemies and now friends – on Belfast Lad & Co.’s Black Cab Tours to get both sides of the story. The company is also a member of the Peace Tourism Initiative of Northern Ireland. Of course, no trip to Derry is complete without a selfie at the Derry Girls mural, an homage to the popular Netflix comedy that helped launch Bridgerton’s Nicola Coughlan’s career, and provided a bittersweet look at life during the fading days of The Troubles. The city was also known for its shirtmakers, and the hundreds of women employed to make shirts sent around the world are the real Derry Girls. They kept food on the table when most men were jobless. It’s an emotional few days, a kind of intentional travel that allows sadness, introspection and inspires respect for the hard-won peace. After a gentle house-boat style cruise around Lough Erne with Erne Water Taxi (think Ontario’s Muskoka, but greener), it’s time to bid Northern Ireland farewell. There’s no fanfare, no border patrol,

just an easy drive down the road. When the signs start to sport both English and Irish Gaelic, we know we’ve crossed over. We’re only two days in and already the agents are excited about being here. Laurraine Payne, owner of Rainy Day Travel Services in Waterloo, Ont., is one of the seven winning agents of a contest co-hosted by TourRadar and Tourism Ireland on the trip. “I do a lot of FITs, and I’ve visited Ireland before and done a lot of things on my own,” she says. “But there’s something about going with in-destination professionals. There are things that I’ve never heard of that I know my clients would love. It’s been great having the Tourism Ireland and TourRadar presence so that I can say to my clients, ‘Hey, I did this with them.’” Payne has been blogging as she goes and has already seen interest from some of her regulars. According to Nika Petauer, partner marketing manager at TourRadar, the company is seeing a strong and growing demand for Ireland from Canadian agents, “reflecting both the destination’s enduring appeal and increasing engagement from the Canadian travel trade,” she says. “And Canadians typically favour our Explorer and In-depth Cultural tours, prioritizing immersive and authentic experiences.” Payne’s agency has just started working with TourRadar and its bank of itineraries. “I’ve got five trips on the go with TourRadar and my own personal trip next month. I was looking for certain things that I couldn’t find with our Canadian suppliers, and I didn’t want to book with someone I didn’t know.” Familiarization trips have a critical role in driving both destination awareness and advocacy with travel trade partners, says Sandra Moffatt, country

director – Canada, Tourism Ireland. By bringing Canadian travel professionals to the Emerald Isle, Moffatt and her team provide first-hand experience of the quality, diversity and ease of selling the destination. “Advisors on this visit can now transform their product knowledge into confidence, enabling them to authentically promote Ireland and influence their clients’ booking decisions.” Laura Derksen of Big Planet Adventure Travel in Winnipeg agrees with Payne. “When my usual “go-to” tour suppliers don’t have the type of itinerary my clients are looking for, TourRadar is a great tool to find alternate travel suppliers offering an array of additional – and commissionable – options,” she says. “Using the agent portal to book and communicate with suppliers is easy and the option to book with foreign suppliers in Canadian dollars is a nice feature. I’ve gotten to know some new tour suppliers and appreciate being able to book them all in one place.” Our next place is not sobering at all. It’s a whiskey and gin tasting at Shed Distillery in Drumshanbo. A refreshing gin and tonic sets us up for the onward journey to Lough Rynn Castle Hotel, our stay for the night. It’s more ‘stately manor house’ than ‘Cinderella’s castle’, with roaring fireplaces, portrait-covered walls and creaking floorboards. The lawns look out over Lough Rynn, while a secret walled garden is a short walk through the woods. In the morning, we make for Fiona Egans Coughlan Farm & Cookery School where we try our hand at making classic Scones. After we pop them in the oven, we visit the lambs and stroll the farm. Tea is waiting

and the warm scones go down easily, accompanied by Fiona’s rhubarb and ginger jam. We also make a stop along the National Famine Way, a trail that covers the 165-kilometre distance many families walked to take the boats that took them away. We, however, arrive in Kilkenny and embark on a walking tour of one of Ireland’s largest and loveliest cities, the home of hurling (a precursor to our hockey) and Smithwick’s beer. Our last stop is Dublin, Ireland’s capital. We’re again reminded of the country’s troubled past with a stirring tour of Kilmainham Gaol, where many political prisoners were held – and executed – for fighting for civil rights. At EPIC, The Irish Emigration Museum, we follow the path of those that chose to leave these shores. But there’s joy as well: from brilliant cuisine and a hands-on jewelry-making class with a silversmith at Silverworksy, to buskers singing on every corner and quirky spots like The Little Museum of Dublin. “There’s a great mix of unique attractions, history and culture, making Ireland an excellent choice for travellers looking to experience a destination and not just travel through it,” says Derksen. “The natural landscapes can be enjoyed on foot, bikes and boats for more active travellers. And when you add a dose of that legendary Irish hospitality, it makes for an unforgettable holiday.” A little Irish luck doesn’t hurt either.

Reimagined Trafalgar brings its signature local immersion and guided travel style to Europe’s rivers with two new intimate cruise ships By Cindy Sosroutomo

22 TRAVEL PROFESSIONAL

rafalgar is best known for rolling countryside drives, local encounters and guided journeys that dig deeper than the typical sightseeing checklist. For nearly 80 years, the brand has built its reputation on connecting travellers with the people and stories behind a destination, whether over a family dinner in Tuscany or through a Local Specialist bringing centuries of history to life on the streets of Prague. Now, the guided tour company is taking that philosophy to Europe’s waterways. This spring, Trafalgar officially entered the river cruise market with the launch of two ships: Trafalgar Verity on the Rhine and Trafalgar Reverie on the Danube. It marks a significant evolution for the brand and one that executives say has been years in the making. “For decades, Trafalgar has built its brand on connecting travellers with the people and stories behind every destination,”

says Melissa DaSilva, Deputy CEO and Chief Sales Officer, TTC Tour Brands. “River cruising is a natural extension of that philosophy, allowing us to visit multiple destinations with minimal logistics and deeper human connections.” The launch was celebrated with inaugural sailings aboard both vessels in April, including a three-day event on Trafalgar Verity in Amsterdam attended by trade partners, media and Trafalgar team members from around the world. Days later, Trafalgar Reverie embarked on its maiden Danube voyage from Passau to Budapest. For travel advisors, the move creates a new selling opportunity from one of the industry’s most recognizable guided vacation brands. For Trafalgar, it opens the door to

a market segment that continues to grow among travellers seeking slower, more immersive journeys. And according to DaSilva, the demand was already there. “When we surveyed our past travellers, over 70% said they would be likely to take a river cruise if Trafalgar offered one, yet only 17% had ever taken one before,” she says. “That told us we had a significant opportunity to introduce our guests to a new way of travelling while staying true to what Trafalgar does best.”

MORE THAN A FLOATING HOTEL

River cruising is hardly new territory in Europe. The Rhine and Danube have long been dominated by luxury operators promising fine dining, castles and panoramic scenery. Trafalgar’s challenge was finding a way to stand apart in an increasingly crowded marketplace. Its answer? Lean harder into what already defines the brand. “What sets Trafalgar’s river cruises apart is that we’re bridging guided land tour experiences with the ease of river cruising,” says DaSilva. “Guests unpack once while exploring multiple countries with Trafalgar’s signature experiences woven into every itinerary, connecting them to the heart of local communities along the way.” SUMMER EDITION 2026 23

That familiar Trafalgar DNA appears everywhere, particularly on shore. Included experiences are designed less around simply checking off landmarks and more around meaningful cultural interaction. The result feels less like a traditional cruise and more like a guided land journey that happens to float. On the Danube, for example, guests aboard Trafalgar Reverie can share a Be My Guest lunch with the Saahs family at Austria’s oldest winery in the Wachau Valley, tasting homemade dishes prepared with ingredients from the family garden. In Budapest, a guided foodie tour introduces travellers to the city’s markets, cafés and local flavours. Along the Rhine, guests sailing on Trafalgar Verity glide through Amsterdam’s canals over dinner aboard a traditional salonboot, while another excursion takes them into Germany’s Palatinate wine region for a sustainable artisanal vinegar tasting with the Wiedemann family. “Every itinerary is built around included shore excursions led by Local Specialists who bring real context and stories to each stop,” says DaSilva. “Our signature Be My Guest experiences welcome guests into the lives of locals and sustainable MAKE TRAVEL MATTER Experiences put money directly back into the communities visited.”

INTIMATE BY DESIGN

Both Trafalgar Verity and Trafalgar Reverie carry just 128 guests across three passenger decks, creating a noticeably intimate atmosphere onboard. It’s a deliberate choice, says DaSilva, one that aligns with Trafalgar’s long-standing emphasis on social connection. “What strikes me about Trafalgar Verity and Trafalgar Reverie is the sense of connection,” she says. “Guests have the comfort of a boutique floating hotel, a social atmosphere that brings people together in a way only a ship this size can, and are always docked in the heart of every destination.” The ships themselves are distinct in personality. Trafalgar Verity leans into an elegant Art Deco aesthetic with blue-and-white interiors, marble bathrooms and perhaps its most unusual feature: the only working fireplace currently sailing Europe’s rivers. There’s also a giant chess set on the upper deck and plenty of inviting corners designed for lingering over coffee or wine while vineyards and castles drift past outside. 24 TRAVEL PROFESSIONAL

Meanwhile, Trafalgar Reverie embraces a warmer, contemporary feel inspired by the Danube itself. Panoramic views dominate the Sky Deck while lounges and public spaces are designed for relaxed conversation after a day ashore. Both ships offer riverview staterooms throughout, onboard Wi-Fi, fitness facilities, complimentary bikes and Nordic walking sticks, self-service laundry and around-the-clock coffee, tea and snacks. Massage services are also available for guests seeking additional downtime between excursions. Still, Trafalgar insists the ships are only part of the story. “Trafalgar Verity and Trafalgar Reverie are stunning ships, but what truly defines a Trafalgar river cruise is what happens on land,” says DaSilva.

DESIGNED FOR ADVISORS

While Trafalgar’s river cruises are clearly aimed at consumers, travel advisors remain central to the strategy. According to DaSilva, nearly 80% of inaugural bookings have come through the trade, a strong indicator that advisors see potential in the product. “We are excited to be attracting both existing Trafalgar guests and travellers completely new to the brand, and it would not be possible without our travel advisor partners,” she says. Interestingly, the new river program is already pulling in a broader audience than initially expected. While Trafalgar anticipated its first sailings would primarily attract loyal past guests, approximately 65% of bookings have come from

travellers who had never sailed with the brand before. “That is a strong signal that we are not only offering a new way to travel for guests who already love Trafalgar, but also reaching a wider audience drawn to the combination of immersive local experiences and value that we deliver,” says DaSilva. The river cruise addition also allows advisors to create more layered itineraries by combining land and water experiences under the Trafalgar umbrella. “Whether a guest wants to stay on land, explore by river, or combine both through our pre- and post-cruise land extensions, we have that covered,” says DaSilva. “Few travellers take the same style of vacation every year and these new trips mean we can continue to grow with our guests.” For advisors increasingly focused on customization and higher-value bookings, that flexibility matters.

THE NEXT CHAPTER

Trafalgar’s river ambitions are only beginning. Already confirmed is Trafalgar Harmonie, launching on the Seine in 2027. The 126-passenger vessel will sail the new ‘Best of the Seine with Paris & Normandy’ itinerary, pairing Parisian highlights with Normandy’s cider farms, Monet’s gardens in Giverny and powerful WWII history along the D-Day beaches. Like its sister ships, Harmonie will emphasize local immersion over passive sightseeing.

Guests will visit family-run cider farms in Normandy, participate in sustainable tourism experiences and explore key historical sites connected to both American and Commonwealth forces, including the Juno Beach Centre. The ship itself adopts a softer design palette of blues, greens and earth tones, intended to evoke a calm floating boutique hotel atmosphere. And beyond Harmonie, even more growth is coming. “We already have two new builds for 2028, which will go on sale later this year,” says DaSilva. “We look forward to growing our fleet significantly by 2030 and offering new ships and destinations for guests and travel advisors to explore with us.” The timing appears strategic. River cruising continues to attract travellers looking for slower-paced experiences that blend comfort with cultural depth. At the same time, many consumers who may have previously found river cruising intimidating or overly formal are increasingly open to trying it through brands they already know and trust. That familiarity may prove to be one of Trafalgar’s greatest strengths. After all, while the company may now be sailing rivers instead of roads, the core philosophy remains remarkably unchanged: meaningful travel built around human connection. “Across all of our trips, we are intentional about creating spaces and programming that bring people together,” says DaSilva. “That sense of human connection is translating beautifully to the river.” And perhaps that’s the real appeal here. Not simply another river cruise line entering the market, but a guided travel company reimagining how Europe’s rivers can be experienced – not from a distance, but from within the stories, communities and conversations unfolding along the shoreline.
