Same European rivers, different journey: Why river cruise clients might be rail clients too BY KATHRYN FOLLIOTT TORONTO — You’ve got European river clients. Are they cruise clients – or rail clients? Experiencing Europe’s famed waterways by train is making tracks, so to speak, in a year when record low water levels created challenges at every turn for river cruise lines, including some cancellations and offers of refunds and future travel credits. Over the past decade river cruising has grown 10-15% every year. All the altered itineraries, motor coach segments and ship swaps due to low water levels won’t make a bit of difference to the incredible popularity of seeing Europe’s riverside cities and towns by ship. But for rail enthusiasts, and they are legion, train trips that showcase the beauty of the regions around the Danube and the Rhine could be just the ticket.

THE SLOW TRAVEL TREND Railbookers Group’s Famous Rivers by Rail collection launched in mid-June. With all the planning leading up to the launch, the timing was purely coincidental, but it’s certainly a year when all eyes have been on Europe’s rivers. It also comes amid a vast resurgence interest for rail travel, thanks to the ‘slow travel’ trend, and also fuelled by

The historic medieval village of Bacharach, Germany enjoys a prime position on the Rhine

climate-friendly short-haul flight bans in some European countries. In 2024 European locals, commuters and visitors logged 8.4 billion rail trips annually. It was an all-time record.

THE DANUBE, RHINE, SEINE AND DOURO Dan Reisig, Railbookers Group’s Product Marketing & Communications Manager, told Travelweek the Famous Rivers by Rail collection came in response to increased demand the company is hearing “from travel advisors and guests who want a different way to explore these regions.” Many river cruise companies, including Uniworld and Avalon Waterways, offer river cruise-and-rail combo packages. Great Rail Journeys does rail and cruise.

Railbookers’ collection is all-in on rail, using existing itineraries that all share a common theme: exploring the cities and routes that are welltravelled by river cruises, but using the train as the way to connect between destinations. As Railbookers’ President and CEO, Frank Marini, puts it: “People have always been drawn to Europe’s great rivers, but you don’t have to be on the water to experience everything that makes these regions special.” By train, travellers can spend a few days in places like Vienna, Budapest or Cologne, explore beyond the riverfront and then continue on to the next stop, he added. Following the Danube, the 13-day Blue Danube by Rail travels from Prague to Budapest, stopping in Regensburg, Salzburg and Vienna along the way.

There’s also Gems of the Danube by Rail, an 11-day journey from Budapest to Munich, with stops in Vienna and Nuremberg. The 13-day Rhine and Danube by Rail goes from Amsterdam to Budapest with stops in Cologne, Nuremberg and Vienna. Rounding out the collection are Romantic Rhine by Rail (Amsterdam to Basel, stopping in Cologne, Heidelberg and Strasbourg) and Swiss Alps and Rhine Castles by Rail (Basel to Amsterdam via Lucerne, Strasbourg and Cologne). Other big-draw rivers not in the collection but also on offer: the Seine and the Douro.

PRICING & PACING Asked about rates, Reisig said price points compare favourably to traditional river cruise product. The company’s à la carte approach allows advisors to package hotels (3-, 4- and 5-star) along with transfers and tours. Pricing is within reach partly because Railbookers uses regional, intercity and mainline European trains. Product info from the company is available via weekly live webinars, and a Travel Advisor Toolbox with downloadable materials including brochures, guides, and maps. There’s also hands-on support, so advisors don’t need to be rail experts. What about the pacing? “One of the great things about these itineraries is that the pacing can be entirely dictated by the guests,” said Reisig.

“While each itinerary features two to three nights in each city, all trips can be tailored to add nights or destinations, or arranged exactly as each guest would like. Most full days include one sightseeing activity, leaving plenty of free time for independent exploration and enjoying the culture of the city.” The rail journeys themselves are easily managed, he added, with no individual leg lasting more than roughly four hours (and many are shorter).

SELLING TIPS Travel advisors looking to introduce clients to a new way of seeing Europe’s riverside cities and towns have three selling tips, courtesy of Reisig. First up – naturally – water levels aren’t an issue. Of course Europe’s rail lines aren’t immune to disruptions, chiefly labour strikes. Reisig notes that for the most part trains run every day with multiple departures per day, and in the event of a cancellation or other interruption, the customer care team proactively rebooks and accommodates each guest. Reisig also highlights the flexible timing. “With an independent rail vacation like Famous Rivers by Rail, the guest is free to enjoy each destination fully at their leisure. Whether it’s time for sightseeing

and exploration, or selecting their own dining, the entire vacation is on their schedule.” Itineraries are flexible too. “Clients can enhance and tailor the trip to exactly what they want (and don’t want) to see and do,” he says. That can include adding destinations, or changing the number of nights in a city. Advisors who think they don’t have rail clients may find the opposite is true. Surprisingly, Reisig says most Railbookers travellers aren’t diehard train aficionados. “The truth is our guests are not necessarily rail enthusiasts. Rail just provides them a convenient, comfortable and seamless way to travel between city centres in Europe.” He adds: “Our guests are enthusiasts for bucket-list travel and once-in-alifetime experiences and journeys – much like river cruise enthusiasts. What we have found is that once a guest travels on a rail vacation, they are inspired and excited to do another.” Railbookers doesn’t release sales figures. But when asked about Canada, Reisig said this market continues to grow, with double-digit growth not just in 2026 but also leading into 2027.

Cruise-and-stay packages, advisor perks and more: Royal Caribbean, Sandals share what’s next MIAMI — Cruise-and-stay packages are coming, travel advisor perks are staying and there’s much more in the works as Royal Caribbean Group and Sandals Resorts International look ahead to their new partnership. Those were some of the key takeaways from a special edition of Royal Caribbean’s Coffee Talk, featuring Jason Liberty, Chairman and CEO of Royal Caribbean Group, and Adam Stewart, Executive Chairman of Sandals Resorts International. Hosted by Vicki Freed, Royal Caribbean’s Senior VP, Sales and Trade Support & Service, the session gave travel advisors an opportunity to hear directly from both executives about what the partnership means for their businesses, and what comes next. The message from both leaders was clear: the goal is to create what Liberty calls not just the vacation of a lifetime, but “a lifetime of vacations.”

CRUISE-AND-STAY PACKAGES IN THE WORKS One of the most popular questions from advisors centred on the potential for combined cruiseand-stay vacations. Liberty confirmed that packages and pre- and post-cruise stays

will be opportunities for pre- and post-cruise stays, packages and other offerings.” He said the partnership won’t see cruise passengers descending on Sandals and Beaches resorts during port calls. The properties have been carefully designed around the needs of their resort guests, he noted,

ADVISORS SHOULD FEEL REASSURED THAT WE’RE KEEPING ALL OUR EXISTING PROGRAMS IN PLACE

are part of the plan, particularly in the Caribbean. “We’re the largest cruise operator in the Caribbean, and Adam is the largest all-inclusive operator,” said Liberty. “There are a lot of similarities between our products, so there

and the intention isn’t to disrupt those experiences. “This partnership is about creating a lifetime of vacations. It’s about developing a great ecosystem of vacation experiences for us to deliver and for our travel partners to sell,” said Liberty.

ADVISOR PERKS & COMMISSIONS For advisors concerned about the future of Sandals’ trade programs, Stewart offered reassurance. “There are no plans to discontinue any of those programs. There haven’t been any discussions about doing that,” he said. That includes Points to Paradise and the company’s other advisor incentives. Stewart said the partnership could result in additional programs and benefits. “The travel advisor community should feel reassured that we’re keeping all our existing programs in place, and we’re looking forward to introducing new and exciting programs in the future,” he said. Liberty also pointed to opportunities for better-integrated booking technology, training and sales resources. Asked whether Royal Caribbean’s NextCruise desks onboard its ships could eventually book Sandals vacations, he said that could be one avenue, although no specific plans have been finalized. He said the objective isn’t to shift business between booking channels, but to make the process easier

while generating greater value for travel partners.

than 20 years, are being brought into the joint venture.

The companies are also exploring how loyalty status, points and guest benefits could work across their portfolios.

“We will not build a resort on a B-grade or C-grade piece of land,” he said. “Much of that land is going to be developed through this joint venture.”

“We want to connect these ecosystems relatively quickly,” said Liberty, adding that the teams need time to determine how such an arrangement would work.

He also hinted at possible expansion beyond the Caribbean in the longer term.

SANDALS 3.0 AND $1 BILLION+ FOR BEACHES Stewart described the partnership as the beginning of what he calls the ‘Sandals 3.0’ era, with ambitious growth plans. More than US$1 billion in investment is planned for the Beaches brand, including projects in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Exuma in the Bahamas, Barbados and Runaway Bay, Jamaica. Major expansions are also planned at Sandals Dunn’s River and Sandals Grande St. Lucian, along with additional villages, overwater bungalows and specialized suites. There’s potentially much more to come. Stewart said hundreds of acres of undeveloped Caribbean beachfront land, some held by his family for more

“Success means going further, faster,” said Stewart. “Maybe one day we’ll expand even beyond the Caribbean archipelago.”

DISTINCT BRANDS, SHARED OPPORTUNITIES Both executives emphasized that the companies’ individual brands will retain their identities. “Sandals is Sandals. Beaches is Beaches. Royal Caribbean remains Royal Caribbean,” said Stewart. Liberty echoed that message, pointing to Royal Caribbean Group’s approach to maintaining differentiation between Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises and Silversea. “We didn’t invest in this partnership simply to acquire buildings,” he said. “We invested in what we believe are the best all-inclusive resorts in the Caribbean, and in the two brands that deliver those experiences.” Stewart said the companies’ shared emphasis on customer experience, employees and travel advisors will be central to their future plans. And with both brands investing in expansion, technology and new vacation experiences, the executives see plenty of room for growth.

Rendering of Royal Caribbean’s Hero of the Seas, coming in August 2027

As Stewart put it, the partnership is about “how do we continue to do more? How do we give more value? How do we give more offerings?”

WORLD NEWS

AIRLINES At the ALTA AGM and Airline Leaders Forum in Mexico City, LATAM Airlines CEO Robert Alvo said jet fuel prices won’t be coming down any time soon. “The safe position to take today is that the high prices will be in place for a long time,” said Alvo. More than 40 airline CEOs took part in ALTA’s forum, including WestJet Group CEO Alexis von Hoensbroech. IATA’s Jet Fuel Price Monitor shows an 113.7% year over year increase in the global average jet fuel price. “Many people have had the impression that the crisis in the Middle East would be shorter. The situation has not normalized,” said Alvo. The head of Malaysia Airlines’ parent company says he doesn’t rule out a green tax on passengers to help offset high costs of sustainable aviation fuel, a move that would only further raise ticket prices. The comments by Malaysia Aviation Group’s Capt. Nasaruddin A. Bakar came as airlines worldwide are trying to cut carbon emissions while grappling with prohibitive costs and limited availability of sustainable aviation fuel, known as SAF. Singapore was the first in the world to announce a governmentmandated green aviation tax from January 2027, with charges varying by destination and cabin class.

PRIVATIZATION PUSH Lufthansa is buying a 44.9% stake in TAP Air Portugal in a $1.3 billion deal, in the latest effort to privatize the airline. The deal requires approval by EU regulators. TAP carried 16.7 million passengers in 2025, and its 90+ aircraft fly to over 90 destinations, 52 of them in Europe, 16 in Central and South America, 14 in Africa and 11 in North America. The airline made a net profit last year of $4.6 million. Two previous attempts to sell off stakes in the airline, in 1998 and 2015, failed, with governments taking the company back into Portuguese state ownership.

SCAM SITES The ETIAS hasn’t even launched yet, and already more than 150 sites are scamming travellers with bogus offers of authorizations. When the ETIAS does launch, Europe-bound travellers from nearly 60 visa-exempt countries, including Canada, will need to apply for an entry permit in advance of their trip, and pay 20 euros, a sharp increase in price from the original 7 euros. The permit will be valid for three years. ABTA in the UK believes the ETIAS shouldn’t launch until EES is fully operational and working properly. The official ETIAS authorization site is travel-europe. europa.eu/etias.

More transborder routes for AC, UA as govt. scrutinizes expanded joint venture MONTREAL — Air Canada and United Airlines are expanding their transborder networks for summer 2027, with new routes from Toronto, Montreal and Edmonton, along with additional UA service to several more Canadian cities. Coinciding with the carriers’ announcement, Transport Canada has launched a public consultation into the proposed transborder JV expansion. According to the heads up from Transport Canada, the two carriers want to add Canada-U.S. routes to their joint business arrangement that are currently excluded.

United meanwhile is adding seasonal service between Newark and St. John’s, along with new flights from Denver to Ottawa and Quebec City. The airline will also increase frequencies between Washington,

more than five million additional transborder seats.

OUR ASSESSMENT WILL CONSIDER PUBLIC INTEREST AND HOW THE CHANGE COULD IMPACT COMPETITION

As Air Canada and United look to renew and expand their transborder joint business agreement, Transport Canada says the new JV arrangement raises “public interest considerations,” with Transport Canada officials examining the proposed arrangement: “Our assessment will consider public interest factors and how the change could impact competition.”

Canadians can provide feedback through Transport Canada’s Let’s Talk Transportation consultation platform until Nov. 15.

Air Canada will launch new nonstop flights linking TorontoLouisville, Montreal-Indianapolis and Edmonton-Newark. 20+ NEW ROUTES SINCE 2022 The latest additions build on Air Canada and United’s transborder joint business agreement, in place since 2022. Since then, the airlines have introduced 20 new routes between Canada and the U.S., with more than 4.3 million passengers travelling jointly on the two carriers. The partnership has also generated

Costa Rica after dark: Stargazing, night hikes and astro-wellness Costa Rica’s next chapter of nature-based tourism is unfolding after dark, with experiences that combine stargazing, wellness, biodiversity and nocturnal landscapes.

In complete darkness, the water can act as a natural mirror, reflecting the night sky while birds and frogs provide the soundtrack. Caño Negro is a Ramsar site, recognized internationally for its ecological importance.

From Blue Zone breathwork beneath the stars to wetland reflections and cloud forest night hikes, the country is highlighting a different side of its natural environment. The focus goes beyond traditional stargazing, incorporating wellness practices, wildlife, local traditions and experiences shaped by the hours after sunset.

Travellers can also join guide-led walks along the forest edge, where nocturnal wildlife becomes more active after dark.

BLUE ZONE NIGHTS IN NICOYA On the Nicoya Peninsula, one of the world’s few Blue Zones, night has long been associated with rest and wellbeing. Older generations speak of “resting with the moon,” a rhythm that connects starlight, sleep and slow living with longevity. Some local practitioners are beginning to offer evening meditations and nature-led experiences designed to help travellers reset their internal clocks beneath the region’s dark skies. Options can include sunset breathwork and occasional fullmoon circles, giving wellness-focused travellers another way to experience the peninsula.

WETLAND STARGAZING IN CAÑO NEGRO At Caño Negro in Costa Rica’s Northern Plains, the wetlands take on a different character after sunset.

CLOUD FOREST NIGHTS IN MONTEVERDE Monteverde’s cloud forest offers another nocturnal experience, with the mist, forest and sky changing dramatically after sunset. Nearly 80% of the area’s wildlife is active after dark, according to the release, creating opportunities to hear owls and insects while watching fireflies move through the trees. When the fog clears, brief glimpses of the stars can appear overhead. On some nights, moonlight illuminates the mist, producing what locals refer to as the “fog arching phenomenon.” The Irazú Volcano region is also gaining attention for night-sky viewing, with guided astronomy experiences at high elevation attracting both amateur and professional stargazers. Together, these experiences add a new dimension to Costa Rica’s well-established nature and wellness offering, giving travellers more reasons to keep exploring long after sunset. Added capacity driving down Caribbean cruise fares TORONTO — Caribbean cruise fares are heading south as a wave of added capacity boosts supply. According to reports, cruise lines are discounting Caribbean sailings as they work to fill ships in a market where capacity is already above prepandemic levels, and still growing. The average starting price in September for an inside cabin on a five-to-seven-night January 2027 Caribbean sailing was US$748, down from $846 a year earlier, according to reports. Passenger capacity in the region is expected to rise 11.5% year over year in 2026, putting it close to 60% above 2019 levels. NCL’s average fares for Caribbean cruises departing in Q1 2027 were 21% lower in September than at the same point in the previous year’s booking cycle. Carnival’s pricing was down 7% year over year and Royal Caribbean’s was down 8%. The conflict in the Middle East has affected consumer confidence, pushed fuel prices higher and prompted some cruise lines to redeploy vessels from the Gulf. Among them is MSC World Europa, which can carry more than 6,700 passengers. Originally scheduled for Middle Eastern cruises, MSC World Europa will redeploy to the French Antilles and southern Caribbean for winter 2026-2027. The mega-ship’s arrival in the Caribbean will replace the smaller MSC Seaview, which will offer South America sailings. While base fares may be dropping, onboard revenue is up. Like

ancillaries for airlines – generating billions of dollars of revenue – onboard passenger purchases are increasingly a focus for cruise lines. Carnival Corp. reported onboard and other revenue of $2.91 billion for the three months to August, up 6.7% year over year. That was more than three times the growth rate of fare revenue, which reached $5.53 billion.

Canada leads Jamaica’s winter 2027 airlift growth with 62.1% increase TORONTO — Seat capacity from Canada to Jamaica is up 62.1% for winter 2027, according to the latest stats from the Jamaica Tourist Board. The Canadian market leads the way in the JTB’s just-released Winter 2027 Airlift Outlook, which shows a grand total of 1,324,965 airline seats from all airline partners worldwide allocated to Jamaica for January - April 2027. That’s 251,739 more seats than the same period in 2026, an overall increase of 23.5%. Canada has the biggest percentage jump, followed by the U.S. at 23.1% and Latin America at 2%. Both

Canada and Latin America are also running ahead of their 2025 capacity levels.

FILLING THE SEATS The big airlift jump for winter 2027 comes on the heels of winter 2026’s recovery season from the October 2025 hit by Hurricane Melissa. With Cuba out of this winter’s programs, many markets including Canada have also added capacity to other sun destinations. For Jamaica’s tourism officials, the focus now turns to filling those seats. “Our airline partners have given Jamaica a strong foundation for the winter season which reinforces their confidence in us,” said Jamaica’s Minister of Tourism, Edmund Bartlett. “The risk of the destination being underserved by airlift has been significantly managed down, and we expect the seats now committed to support strong occupancy across all segments of the accommodation sector. Our focus now is on converting those seats into bookings.” The year-over-year gains come as Jamaica continues rebuilding its tourism infrastructure following Hurricane Melissa. While winter airlift is up significantly over 2026, overall seat capacity

remains 7.6% below 2025 levels, or 92.4% of the capacity available two years earlier.

90% OF HOTEL INVENTORY IN OPERATION On the accommodation side, about 3,500 hotel rooms, representing 10% of Jamaica’s total room stock, are expected to remain unavailable this winter. That leaves roughly 90% of the island’s hotel inventory in operation. The JTB is keeping a close watch on reopening dates and airline schedules as more properties return to service post-Melissa. Recently reopened resorts include Royalton’s five Jamaica properties (Royalton Blue Waters, Royalton Hideaway Blue Waters, Royalton Negril, Royalton Hideaway Negril and Royalton CHIC Jamaica). Resorts scheduled to reopen later this fall include Sandals South Coast (Nov. 18), Grand Bahia Principe Jamaica (Dec. 1) and Sandals Caribbean Cay (formerly Sandals Royal Caribbean) and Sandals Montego Bay on Dec. 18. Key reopenings for early 2027 include Jewel Grande Montego Bay and Breathless Montego Bay (Feb. 1). Meanwhile Hyatt is targeting May 1 for the reopening of Hyatt Zilara Rose Hall, Hyatt Ziva Rose Hall and Secrets Montego Bay. “Our teams in the various markets will continue to work with airline, tour operator and hotel partners to convert seats into bookings, while monitoring schedules, booking pace and reopening dates. We are grateful for all our stakeholders who are working to ensure we achieve this conversion,” said Donovan White, JTB’s Director of Tourism.

Canada-to-U.S. travel in Sept. 2026: +5.6% by car, +11.6% by air OTTAWA — Those little upticks in cross border travel keep coming, with Statistics Canada data showing the second month in a row of Canadato-U.S. increases for both car travel and air travel. The numbers are still a long, long way off 2024 stats – but the small jumps year over year in 2026 vs. 2025 suggest ‘quiet tourism’ from Canada to the U.S. is gaining ground, even with the trade war. Some U.S. destinations are faring better than others amid ‘Elbows Up.’ According to reports, Canadian visits to Las Vegas dropped 17.4% in 2025 and the decline has become an election issue stateside and a key indicator of the decrease in cross border leisure and discretionary travel for Canadian carriers. To all U.S. destinations, StatCan’s latest numbers show that Canadianresident return trips from the U.S., by car and by air, totalled 1.9 million in September 2026, up 6.8% year over year. It was the sixth consecutive month of year-over-year growth and follows an 8.8% increase in August 2026. Canadians’ return trips from the U.S. by car in September 2026 vs. September 2025 were up 5.6% (but still 31% lower than in September 2024). Most importantly for travel advisors and the retail travel trade, Canadians’ return trips from the U.S. by air in September 2026 vs. September 2025 were also up, by 11.6% (and down 18.7% compared to 2024). Canadian-resident return trips from overseas countries by air totalled 1 million in September 2026, a 3.2% increase from the same month one year earlier.

Air Canada removes YYZZIH flights for winter 2026-27 TORONTO — Capacity cuts and network adjustments continue as airlines navigate sky-high jet fuel costs. The latest change impacts Air Canada’s flights to Ixtapa Zihuatanejo. Air Canada has cancelled its seasonal ZIH route out of Toronto. The route was scheduled to operate once weekly onboard Air Canada rouge from Oct. 29, 2026 to April 29, 2027.

Intrepid Travel expands 2027 portfolio with 50+ new destinations TORONTO — Intrepid Travel is taking travellers off the beaten path in 2027 with more than 80 new trips spanning 50-plus destinations. The expanded portfolio spans Walking & Trekking, Cycling, Wildlife, Explorer, Expedition, Short Breaks, Family and 18-35s categories. The itineraries aim to spread tourism benefits across local communities while catering to different ages, interests and budgets. In Thailand, the 14-day Hidden Gems of Thailand takes travellers beyond Chiang Mai to rural mountain villages, while the 12-day Turkey Black Sea Adventure explores lesser-known destinations along the country’s Black Sea coast. Closer-to-home options include Costa Rica’s Guanacaste region, Matagalpa in Nicaragua, Canada’s Yukon territory and several regions

How Mexico’s proof of guardianship law could impact family vacations MEXICO CITY — Mexico’s new childprotection legislation could impact the paperwork parents and caregivers need to pack for family vacations. The legislation brings in mandatory protocols for Mexico hotels and resorts to follow before any tourist service is provided. Hotels and resorts must check guest documentation to confirm the relationship between young guests and their parents or guardians. Without that documentation, hotels and resorts must deny services and notify authorities. With no clear timeline yet for implementation, parents are advised to pack a copy of their child’s official birth certificate that lists both parents. Single parents or legal guardians should have certified copies of custody arrangements or guardianship paperwork. Meanwhile adults travelling with minors who are not their legal

guardian must have a notarized letter of consent signed by the child’s legal parents, confirming the relationship and authorizing the trip, according to reports.

Straight out of a fairy tale: Germany’s half-timbered towns Crooked gables, painted wooden beams, cobblestone lanes and market squares that look unchanged for centuries – walking through Germany’s half-timbered towns, visitors may wonder whether the scenery is real. It is. In Celle, more than 500 listed half-timbered houses line the old town streets. The highlight is the Hoppener House, dating to 1532 and decorated with mythical creatures carved into its façade. Further south, Quedlinburg boasts more than 2,000 well-preserved half-timbered buildings dating from the 14th to the 19th century and is recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Travellers who think the word “picturesque” is overused should visit Monschau in the Eifel. Enclosed by forested hills and threaded by the River Rur, the town was largely spared from wars and fires. More than 300 original halftimbered houses from the 17th and 18th centuries still stand today – not reconstructed, but genuinely intact.

Marburg in Hesse pairs medieval heritage with student energy. The old town’s lanes climb more than 100 metres to the Landgrave’s Castle, lined with halftimbered houses whose ground floors are home to cafés, bookshops and small boutiques that keep the historic core very much alive. In the south, half-timbering takes perhaps its most iconic form. Rothenburg ob der Tauber is internationally regarded as the quintessential medieval German town, with lanes that Walt Disney used as a reference. Those looking for the origins of German half-timbered construction will find them in Esslingen am Neckar, where the oldest halftimbered house in Germany was built around 1262 and still stands today. Tübingen, also on the Neckar, is best discovered from the water – a traditional punt ride offers one of the most charming views of its historic skyline. Run Bahamas invites Canadians to lace up for the inaugural ‘race-cation’ in 2027 NASSAU — The Bahamas is inviting Canadian runners to combine their next race with a tropical getaway at the inaugural Run Bahamas, taking place Jan. 31, 2027. According to Marcel Major, CEO of Four Seasons Race Management, “this will be a racecation destination event you won’t want to miss.” For Canadian travel advisors, Run Bahamas offers an opportunity to package race registrations with flights, accommodations and extended stays, turning a sporting event into a sun-soaked vacation. The event will feature a full marathon, a four-person marathon relay, a half marathon, a 10K and a Colours of Courage 5K, offering options for runners of all levels. Virtual options are also available for the half and full marathons. In a recent interview with Travelweek, Major said the event aims to be more than just a race. “The goal is to create a destination experience that highlights Bahamian hospitality, culture and natural beauty.” Major, an RRCA-certified race director and former president of the Bahamas Roadmasters Running Club, is leading the event alongside his wife, Theresa Major. Both are experienced marathoners, having competed in Berlin, Chicago, Toronto and Rio de Janeiro.

RACE, RELAX AND REPEAT Major encourages participants to make a weekend of it, arriving Friday and staying until at least Monday, or longer, to explore the destination. “So, we want you to come and experience the Bahamas in all of its

splendour, and make this a runcation destination,” he said. Interest is already extending beyond The Bahamas. Major noted that runners from seven countries had registered at the time of the interview. He also emphasized that Run Bahamas is a new, independently operated event and is not affiliated with the former Marathon Bahamas.

FIVE RACES, ONE ISLAND CELEBRATION The marathon, half marathon and marathon relay will start at Goodman’s Bay, Cable Beach, Nassau, with the shorter-distance races following. Awards will recognize the top three male and female finishers in each age category for the marathon, half marathon, 10K and 5K, along with the top three relay teams. And the festivities aren’t limited to runners. The race village at Goodman’s Bay will welcome families, friends and spectators for entertainment and finish-line celebrations, with the beach providing an ideal setting for some post-race relaxation. Registration fees increase Jan. 2, 2027, with registration closing Jan. 30 at 5 p.m. ET.

RUNNING FOR A CAUSE Run Bahamas will also support the local community, with organizer Four Seasons Race Management donating a portion of event proceeds to the Gennie Dean Caring and SharingCancer Support Group. Founded in 2012, the organization supports Bahamian families affected by cancer by providing nutritional support and other essential care. As part of an October cancerawareness initiative, Run Bahamas is offering $10 off registration

for the Colours of Courage 5K. Participants can use promo code PINK through Oct. 31, 2026.

HOTEL OFFERS AND RACE-DAY TRANSFERS Several Nassau and Paradise Island resorts are offering special rates for race participants, creating additional opportunities for travel advisors to build vacation packages around the event. Warwick Paradise Island Bahamas is the official host hotel and offers a dedicated race-weekend booking code, MARATHON, valid for stays from Jan. 28 to Feb. 2, 2027. A minimum two-night stay is required, and guests must be at least 16 years old. Located on Nassau Harbour, the resort is within walking distance of Atlantis Casino and Marina Village. To access the offer, enter the code in the Rate Access or Corporate Code field on Warwick’s website. Exclusive roundtrip race-day bus transportation will also be available between Warwick and the start-andfinish area at Goodman’s Bay. Breezes Bahamas and Baha Mar are also offering special race-weekend rates, with reservation links available on the Run Bahamas website. Travel advisors can also explore air-and-hotel packages through tour operators, giving clients the flexibility to extend their stay beyond race weekend. This winter, flight frequencies to Nassau have increased, with options from Toronto, Montreal, Halifax, Calgary and Ottawa, offered by Air Canada, WestJet and Porter. For more information, including hotel offers and event details, visit runbahamas.net. Race registration is available at runsignup.com/Race/BS/ Nassau/RunBahamas.

EXPLORING WITH THE PIONEERS IN POLAR TRAVEL In 1966, Lars-Eric Lindblad led the first non-scientific voyage to Antarctica, pioneering expedition cruising. Six decades later, National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions carries that spirit of discovery forward on voyages across Antarctica and the Arctic. The fleet’s purpose-built polar ships use advanced capabilities to venture deep into icy waters, reaching remote places few travelers experience. Rather than follow a rigid route, veteran captains and seasoned expedition teams adapt each day to changing wildlife, weather and ice—creating opportunities to kayak among icebergs or search the sea ice for polar bears. A National Geographic Photographer accompanies every departure, helping your clients capture the wonder of their experience.

Globus and Cosmos introduce Unpack and Explore Tours for 2027 Globus and Cosmos are introducing a new touring style for 2027 that gives travellers more time to explore a region while staying in one or two home bases. The new ‘Unpack and Explore Tours’ feature multiplenight stays at well-positioned hotels, with included day trips, regional excursions and guided sightseeing allowing travellers to discover nearby cities, villages, landmarks and cultural highlights without changing hotels as often. The concept is designed for travellers who prefer to settle into their surroundings rather than pack up and move to a new destination every few days. With fewer hotel changes, they have more opportunities to get to know a place, whether that means finding a favourite café, returning to a restaurant they discovered earlier in the trip or spending free time exploring the neighbourhood around their hotel. Tour Directors and Local Guides bring each destination to life, while included sightseeing and regional excursions take care of much of the planning. Built-in free time also allows travellers to explore independently, offering a

balance of organized experiences and personal discovery. The collection features Globus and Cosmos tours across Europe and North America, with itineraries designed around a range of regional experiences. Travellers can stay in Lagos while exploring Portugal’s Algarve region, use Trieste as a gateway to Italy and Slovenia, or discover Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast from Split. Other itineraries focus on regional Italian cuisine and culture, with home bases in Rome, Tuscany or Puglia. For travel advisors, the new touring style provides another option for clients who want to experience several destinations at a more relaxed pace. It may appeal particularly to travellers who prefer fewer hotel changes, want to explore a region in greater depth and appreciate having sightseeing and day-trip logistics arranged for them, while still having time to follow their own interests.
