Travelweek’s latest conference underscores strong demand despite global volatility
TORONTO — Against a backdrop of ongoing uncertainty in the global travel landscape, Travelweek once again brought the industry together for its latest virtual conference, “Future of Travel: Onwards & Upwards,” held May 6.
Timed to coincide with Travel Agent Day, the event tackled key challenges facing travel professionals while celebrating advisors’ resilience and dedication. Industry leaders shared candid insights shaped by recent disruptions including Cuba’s fuel shortages, violence in Mexico, rising jet fuel costs and the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
To watch the full show, click here.
Opening the event, Travelweek publisher Devin Kinasz acknowledged the challenges head-on. “Whenever something happens in the world, travel is the first to feel the impact, and that’s certainly the case now,” she said. “Travel advisors are
definitely hearing some hesitancy from clients. But here’s the amazing thing: people are still travelling and they’re still booking trips. The pandemic taught the travel industry that we can get through anything.”
The event maintained a celebratory tone with prize giveaways including a $1,000 Air Canada voucher and a $500 Porter Airlines gift card. Sponsors including Railbookers, CIE Tours, Antigua & Barbuda, Virgin Voyages, Visit Nicaragua, Airnets International, Aruba Tourism, Princess Hotels, Iberostar Hotels & Resorts and the Mexican Caribbean also shared updates.
GLOBAL AFFAIRS CANADA: ADVISORIES MORE ESSENTIAL THAN EVER
Alexandra Fortier, Deputy Director, Stakeholder Relations in the Emergency Management Bureau at Global Affairs Canada, urged travellers and advisors to
rely on official travel guidance as disruptions continue.
“Our travel advice and advisories are an essential resource, giving travel advisors and Canadians a comprehensive overview of what they need to know before travelling,” said Fortier.
The platform outlines safety conditions, entry requirements, health risks, local laws and consular contacts. On the Middle East, she warned: “The security situation could deteriorate at any time, which is why we continue to advise people not to travel to the region and encourage those there to leave while commercial options remain available.”
Fortier encouraged advisors to stay informed by following Global Affairs Canada’s channels and subscribing to updates, as well as completing the Safe Travel Planner program for certification and practical guidance on consular services and emergency procedures.
THE PANDEMIC TAUGHT THE TRAVEL INDUSTRY THAT WE CAN GET THROUGH ANYTHING
G ADVENTURES: FLEXIBILITY AND PURPOSE-DRIVEN TRAVEL
Hillary Arsenault, GPS Quebec and Atlantic at G Adventures, said the company continues to navigate uncertainty through its small-group model.
“Since 1990 we’ve been grounded in the belief that travel is a force for good,” she said. “It gives us flexibility and allows us to make real time decisions with our local teams.”
Demand remains strong, particularly for immersive travel. “People want deeper connections with the places they visit and small groups make that possible in a way larger tours cannot,” she said.
Top destinations include Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Portugal, the Azores and Ireland, with continued interest in Scotland, the Galapagos and Egypt. “Travellers are looking for comfort with adventure, culturally immersive experiences and travel that has purpose,” she added.
JAMAICA: RESILIENCE DRIVING RECOVERY
Angella Bennett, Director Canada for the Jamaica Tourist Board, highlighted the destination’s strong
rebound following last year’s Hurricane Melissa.
“We have a word in Jamaica, ‘tallawah,’ which means resilience and strength,” she said. “That speaks volumes to the speed of our recovery.”
Jamaica welcomed one million visitors within five months of the storm, with approximately 80% of hotel inventory currently open across key resort areas including Montego Bay, Ocho Rios and Falmouth. Full recovery is expected by year-end, particularly along the south coast.
Air access from Canada is also rebounding. All major carriers have resumed service, including Air Canada, WestJet, Sunwing, Air Transat, Flair Airlines and Caribbean Airlines, with flights operating into Montego Bay and Kingston.
“We are projecting almost an 11% increase in capacity and connectivity to Jamaica this coming winter,” Bennett said, with seat capacity expected to rise from 359,000 to nearly 400,000.
VIRGIN ATLANTIC: MEASURED GROWTH IN CANADA

Toronto–Heathrow route, launched last year, is performing as planned.
“We’re extremely encouraged by how the route has established itself,” he said. “Toronto was a deliberate re-entry for us and it’s delivering exactly what we planned.”
The route has seen a balanced mix of traffic and strong reliability. “We had a 100% completion ratio out of Toronto in the first year.”
Looking ahead, Virgin Atlantic’s fleet transformation program will deliver a younger, more fuel-efficient fleet by 2028, improving both cost efficiency and environmental performance.
Patrizio Iaquinandi, Manager Sales of Discover Airlines said the carrier continues to expand in Canada’s transatlantic leisure market with nonstop routes from Calgary and Halifax to Frankfurt and Munich.
Despite geopolitical uncertainty and rising costs, demand for Europe remains strong. “We continue to see solid demand from Canada to Europe in summer 2026,” he said, noting that bookings are outpacing overall market growth.
However, traveller behaviour is evolving. “Canadians are planning their trips more deliberately, with greater attention to value, reliability and comfort,” Iaquinandi said.
The airline is also enhancing its onboard product, with a new “Ocean Blue” cabin launching in
2027 featuring upgraded seating across all classes.
RIVERSIDE LUXURY CRUISES: GROWTH WITH INTENTION
Peter Ouzounov, Senior Director of Sales at Riverside Luxury Cruises, said the company is seeing strong momentum.
“Sales have been really good, the trajectory that we’re on is very strong, but more importantly, it’s very intentional,” he said. “2025 was a record year for us. We doubled sales over the previous year.”
That trend continues with earlier bookings. “What we’re seeing now in 2026 and in 2027 is continued growth, but also more confident, earlier booking behaviour from advisors and guests.”
On value, he added: “Value for us is not about being competitive on price. It’s about being complete in experience.”
The company has also introduced added flexibility. “River cruising remains one of the most stable and reassuring ways to travel,” he said. “The opportunity for advisors is to reframe the conversation from uncertainty to possibility.”
GLOBUS: FOCUSING ON VALUE AND SUPPORT
Billy Stewart, National Trade Manager at Globus, said the company is prioritizing value and stability as costs rise.
“For travellers, that means a price guarantee so when they book, their price is locked in. And for advisors, it means really high commissions paid quickly,” he said.
The company continues to monitor global conditions closely and adjust itineraries as needed. “Every decision is centred on the safety and well-being of our travellers,” he said, emphasizing flexibility and communication.
Demand remains strong across Europe, Japan and domestic Canada. “We’ve seen a big spike in Canadians exploring Canada,” Stewart noted. The company is also expanding small group and off-season offerings.
MANULIFE: INSURANCE DEMAND ON THE RISE
Jennifer Waver, AVP of Travel Sales at Manulife, said global volatility is driving increased demand for travel insurance.
“We’ve seen a definite increase in travel bookings and travel sales year over year, and certainly within the last few months, and even a large spike over the last few weeks,” she said.
She emphasized the importance of advisories. “Travel advisories issued by the government of Canada can affect both trip cancellation, interruption and medical coverage while they’re in destination,” Waver said, noting that “there are actually four Canadian travel advisories.”
“Our travel insurance policies for both trip cancellation and medical coverage are directly tied to these advisories, and they do play a significant role in determining the coverage that we do provide,” she added.
She also encouraged advisors to shift their approach: “What travel advisors need to be doing differently today is leading their insurance discussions with coverage value versus price,” noting that travellers want reassurance “that their claim will be paid.”

“New
York City is always going to deliver”: NYC delegation on a mission to help win back Canadian travellers
BY KATHRYN FOLLIOTT
TORONTO — New York City’s tourism sector knows how to stare down a challenge – and ultimately, win. Now winning back Canadians is a top priority for New York City Tourism + Conventions and its partners.
The decline in visitation from the Canada to the U.S. over the past 13 months hit NYC just like it’s hit every other city south of the border. In 2023, Canadian visitation to the Big Apple reached 995,000. In 2024, it was 983,000. Then came ‘elbows up’,
and in 2025 Canadian visitation fell 19%, to 796,000.
A delegation of nine top NYC tourism partners, led by New York City Tourism + Conventions’ President and CEO, Julie Coker, was in Canada week on a mission – a strategic sales mission, to be exact – to do everything they can to get Canada’s visitation number back on an upward trend. The forecast for 2026 is 840,000.
“I think we’re in a different space compared to where we were in April 2025,” said Coker, when asked about
this year’s predicted increase from Canada. “We are making positive strides. We’ve heard from a number of Canadian visitors that they’re ready to return. For those reasons we’re hopeful.”
“WE WANT TO GET CANADA BACK TO NUMBER ONE”
Speaking to the trade media at a roundtable event in Toronto, Coker was friendly, determined and resilient, just like NYC itself. The city has long been a favourite for Canadian travellers. “We’ve had
New York City Tourism + Conventions, represented in Canada by Reach Global, led a sales mission in Toronto and Montreal with its many NYC tourism partners
such a longstanding relationship, for years,” she said. “We see this as a pause right now. We want Canadians to know that when they’re ready to come back, we welcome them with open arms.”
The sales mission, taking Coker and the delegation to Toronto and Montreal to engage with media, travel trade and MICE buyers, aims to strengthen tourism ties and showcase New York City’s latest cultural, sports and hospitality offerings. Partners included Empire State Building Observatory, Hotel Indigo Lower East Side, Hudson Yards Experiences, Mercer Labs Museum of Art & Technology, MoMA, New York Yankees, Rockefeller Center, The Westin New York at Times Square and Walker Hotels.
Canada is now New York City’s second-largest international market,
discounts during Broadway Week, Restaurant Week and Hotel Week.
WE WANT CANADIANS TO KNOW THAT WHEN THEY’RE READY TO COME BACK, WE WELCOME THEM WITH OPEN ARMS
behind the UK.”Canada is an extremely important market for us,” said Coker. “We want to get Canada back to number one. In 2024 we were so close to one million visitors from Canada. We’ll get there.”
“USE US AS YOUR PARTNER”
For Canadian visitors more concerned about travel budgets and the economy than politics, Coker said there are plenty of ways to find value in an NYC vacation. Shoulder seasons always offer good rates, plus Canadians are big fans of the
“Those are great opportunities to take advantage of NYC.”
When it comes to travel trends, Canadian travellers over-index on live events, she added. Live experiences, whether that’s a sporting event, concert or Broadway show, are always big hits with Canadian visitors. Speaking of sports, in 20 markets globally, including in Canada with partner Porter Airlines, New York City Tourism + Conventions’ ‘Where the World Comes to Play’ highlights New York’s hosting duties for the FIFA 2026 World Cup. The New York
/ New Jersey region will be the site of eight matches including the World Cup Final.
Lift is always crucial. Coker noted that Air Canada’s decision to suspend flights from Toronto and Montreal to JFK, effective June 1 through late October, is a temporary pause. What’s even more important is that Air Canada will still have 34 nonstop flights into NYC, via LGA and EWR.
“The airlift between is still very strong,” says Coker.
She wants travel advisors to see New York City Tourism + Conventions as a resource. “Travellers coming to New York City have so many questions. Which borough should I visit? I’m bringing my family, what can we do as a family? And Canadian travellers are very familiar with New York City, and many return visitors often asking, what else is there? We’re a resource for travel advisors. Use us as your partner. New York City is always going to deliver.”.

Travel advisors “are the core driver” of Virgin Atlantic’s YYZ-LHR success story
Virgin Atlantic’s route connecting Toronto and London Heathrow is flying high – and much of the success is credited to travel advisors.
“We’ve got to thank the travel trade, because you all have been a huge, huge contribution to what we did in the last year,” said Stephen Goulding, Country Manager, Canada for Virgin Atlantic, in a recent conversation with Travelweek.
It’s been just about a year since Virgin Atlantic launched its daily YYZ-LHR flights.
From the get-go, the YYZ-LHR route wasn’t just about London – although the world capital is a major draw, especially as Canadian travellers increasingly look to the UK and Europe for leisure travel inspiration. The route is also a big draw for its connections. Passengers can also take advantage of Virgin Atlantic’s growing transatlantic presence, building on its recent expansion in India to offer seamless onestop connections via LHR to key Indian cities including Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru. The airline is
also working with IndiGo to provide pan-India coverage.
“That’s actually one of the route’s greatest strengths: not only does it complement the existing Virgin Atlantic network, which spans four continents inclusive of 28 destinations across 16 countries, it really opens up Virgin Atlantic to the Canadian travel trade to book the world,” says Goulding. “Toronto is not just a London service, per se. It’s a gateway into a highly optimized global network enabled by Heathrow connectivity, and also in line with our joint venture partnerships with Delta Air Lines and Air France-KLM.”
He added: “On the Canadian side, our expanded partnership with WestJet connects us on to 13 domestic routes through seamless codeshares. Ultimately, the strength of the connection proposition lies in smart partner-led network design and maximizing the customer’s reach while maximizing our strong returns.”
Goulding said travel advisors play a key role in communicating to travellers about Virgin Atlantic’s
Heathrow connectivity as well as driving the awareness of the airline’s premium cabin product, and, of course, the exceptional service from Virgin Atlantic’s staff, from booking to arrival.
A new app with an AI-powered concierge service, NDC rollout in the Canadian market and much more: these are just a few of the initiatives coming from Virgin Atlantic. Virgin Atlantic is also accelerating the rollout of its high-speed inflight connectivity, announcing plans to expand Starlink WiFi across its fleet, with full implementation expected by 2027.
It all adds up to a “truly elevated experience for our guests,” said Goulding. His message for travel advisors? “You’re not just part of the success story – you are the core driver of it. Thank you for all your support.”

Where premium meets possibility
Virgin Atlantic gives travel advisors more to work with, from refined cabins and onboard innovation to stronger partnerships and smoother connections across the Atlantic and beyond.
Virgin Atlantic offers more than a journey your customers will enjoy.
It’s a story that’s easy to sell, with beautifully considered cabins, an experience that keeps setting the pace, and a network that opens up morethrough London Heathrow and our partner airlines.
From our Upper Class Wing and Clubhouse to the last bite onboard, we sweat the details that turn a good flight into a very good call. With great food, thoughtful service and spaces designed to help customers settle in, switch off and arrive feeling one step ahead, the journey feels stylish, distinctive and a cut above the usual from the very start.
Because when the journey is this good, getting there starts to feel like a highlight in its own right.
Thoughtfully designed to feel different
With us, choice, comfort and care aren’t extras. They shape the whole journey. In Upper Class, that means the privacy of a suite, direct aisle access, a fully flat bed, and a London Heathrow experience that starts with the Upper Class Wing, private security and time to unwind in the Clubhouse.
In Premium, it’s the details that make all the difference, more room to relax, dedicated check in, priority boarding, free seat selection and two checked bags, all designed to lift the journey well above standard.
In Economy, customers can tailor the trip to suit them, with three ways to travel and all the comfort, dining and entertainment they expect from us.
What’s next, already underway
We’re continuing to move the premium experience forward.
Already, that means a journey shaped by smarter digital tools, more flexible loyalty and refreshed spaces on the ground, including our reimagined London Heathrow Clubhouse.
From May 2026, Starlink WiFi will begin rolling out across the fleet, helping customers stay connected throughout the journey.
Then comes the next chapter in the cabin experience, with ten new A330neo aircraft introducing expanded Upper Class and Premium cabins, including Retreat Suites, followed by a full Boeing 787-9 redesign from 2028, bringing more space, comfort and style to every seat.
Well connected, well placed
Through the Expanded Joint Venture with Delta Air Lines®, Air France and KLM, customers benefit from the choice, convenience and smoother connections that matter on long-haul journeys, along with loyalty benefits across the partnership. Our relationship with WestJet adds even more flexibility, with connections via Toronto to thirteen gateways across Canada. WHY SELL AVALON?
Small ships, smaller groups, bigger connections – all with Avalon Waterways
A deep dive into Avalon Waterways’ research shows that travellers prefer fewer crowds, more choice and more space. That’s exactly how Avalon was designed.
According to guest research from the award-winning river cruise line, 62% of travellers say they prefer cruising on ships carrying fewer than 150 guests – a model Avalon has long embraced with Suite Ships averaging just 150 passengers, roughly 30% fewer than many river cruise vessels.
“Travellers today are redefining luxury,” says Pam Hoffee, President, Avalon Waterways. “Space. Personalization. Freedom to explore. Smaller ships allow us to deliver all of that – and more – in ways larger ships simply can’t.”
THE ADVANTAGE OF SMALL
Avalon’s intentionally smaller fleet and smaller guest count isn’t just about numbers. From the number of guests onboard to the way spaces are designed and experiences are delivered, Avalon’s intentionally smaller scale shapes every part of the journey. Fewer guests means more personal service. More room throughout each ship. Easier embarkation and exploration. And a more relaxed onboard atmosphere.
Importantly, it also means Avalon guests don’t feel like part of a crowd. “A smaller ship changes how a journey feels,” says Hoffee. “We can focus more on the guest experience instead of managing volume.”
MORE CHOICE, SMALLER GROUPS, DEEPER CONNECTION
Avalon’s small-ship philosophy extends beyond its Suite Ships and into how guests explore ashore. With as many as 28 Avalon Choice Excursions available on select cruises, guests personalize each day based on their interests and pace – naturally creatingsmaller, more intimate touring groups.
Guest research confirms how important that flexibility has become. Nearly all Avalon cruisers (99%) say having a variety of excursion options matters when selecting a cruise. Guest preferences include: Classic guided sightseeing (60%); Active experiences like biking and hiking (20%); cultural Discovery experiences (16%) and exploring independently (6%).
CRUISING DESIGNED FOR HOW PEOPLE WANT TO TRAVEL NOW
While Avalon’s ships carry fewer guests, the company emphasizes
that guest accommodations and gathering spaces are intentionally generous. Avalon’s Panorama Suites, for instance, which make up two full decks of every Suite Ship, are approximately 15% larger than the industry standard and feature wallto-wall windows that open wide, with beds facing the view.
The Panorama Lounge, Panorama Dining Room and Sky Deck are designed to comfortably accommodate all guests at once, while smaller venues such as the Observation Lounge and Club Lounge offer more intimate, quieter spaces to relax.
Avalon’s small-ship approach supports its broader philosophy of personalized cruising: included excursions with multiple daily choices; smaller touring groups; flexible exploration and 3:1 guest-to-crew ratio.
“Travellers want experiences that feel more personal and less crowded,” says Hoffee. “That’s not a new direction for us. It’s how we have always approached river cruising.”

Avalon Envision sailing the Danube
TIME FOR SOMETHING UTTERLY UNIQUE.
Offer your clients an unparalleled travel experience with the first 6 star slow luxury cruises. They’ll experience world-class cuisine, personalized service, and fascinating destinations – aboard the Riverside Luxury Cruises on Europe’s most beautiful rivers.
Riverside Luxury Cruises’ modular sailings redefine river cruise travel
Moving beyond the standard sevennight sailing allows guests more freedom and choice, says Riverside Luxury Cruises.
Since its launch in 2023, Riverside has taken a different approach to river cruising. The company designs its European itineraries around shorter, combinable sailings, a strategy that Riverside says gives travellers greater flexibility than the traditional seven-night cruise format.
“Flexibility has been part of Riverside’s philosophy from the beginning,” says Jennifer Halboth, CEO, Riverside Luxury Cruises, North America of Riverside Luxury Cruises. “Rather than asking travellers to plan their vacation around a rigid sevennight cruise schedule, our itineraries are designed so guests can build the journey that works best for them.”
While many river cruise lines structure itineraries in fixed weekly blocks, Riverside offers sailings of three, four and five nights that can easily be added to other vacation plans along with the classic sevennight itineraries. Longer sailings are
also available, ranging from 10 all the way to 23 nights.
This modular structure allows guests to tailor their river cruise to their travel plans, choosing the sailing length, departure days and embarkation cities that best suit their itinerary. This unique arrangement makes it easy for guests to combine their land vacations with a luxury sojourn on some of Europe’s best rivers.
The approach also opens a wider range of embarkation and debarkation possibilities along Europe’s rivers. On the Danube, for example, travellers can choose itineraries that begin or end in cities such as Vienna, Budapest or Passau, including Vienna round-trip sailings – an option not commonly offered in traditional river cruise programming.
Because Riverside sailings operate on a variety of departure days throughout the week, travellers are not limited to the standard Saturdayto-Saturday cruise schedule that dominates much of the river cruise industry. This expanded schedule
gives guests more flexibility when planning flights and allows them to better align their cruise with land-based travel plans in Europe, especially important considering the ever-increasing costs of airfare.
As demand grows for more personalized travel experiences, Riverside’s modular sailing structure offers a different way to explore Europe’s waterways, one that emphasizes flexibility, choice and the ability to design a journey that fits the traveller, not the calendar.
Sample itineraries include: the threenight Scenes of Southern France with Rhone Delta, a short exploration of the South of France with departures through October 2026; the 17-night Three Rivers: Rhine and Main with Upper & Lower Danube, with the next departure Sept. 2, 2026; and the seven-night Danube Serenade: Iconic Capitals & Wachau Valley, a Viennato-Vienna roundtrip with departures through November 2026.

Travel Insurance that helps your customers explore the world confidently.
You know the importance of comprehensive travel insurance. That’s why Manulife designed the Premium Protection Plan®. And now, we’re excited to introduce our latest Non-Medical Premium Protection Plan®, also exclusive to Travel Agents.
Premium Protection Plans include:
• Industry-leading benefits not found in many competitor plans.
• Unlimited reasons to cancel or interrupt.
• Less restrictions and more coverage: simplified basic exclusions.
• 80% Cancel For Any Reason benefit.
Peace of mind: How Manulife helps plan for the unexpected
As international travel rebounds, more Canadians are seeking comprehensive coverage that includes emergency medical and trip cancellation, says Jennifer Waver, AVP Sales Canada Insurance, Affinity for Manulife.
“These trips often represent a significant and hard-earned investment, so travellers are increasingly focused on protecting both their plans – and their peace of mind.”
Travelweek checked in with Waver to find out more about how demand for travel insurance among Canadians has evolved in the past year.
“Many Canadians have chosen to travel domestically this past year, and many assumed our universal public health care would cover unforeseen events. In reality, coverage for certain emergency medical expenses varies by province so educating clients about the need for supplement travel insurance – even for domestic travel – was key in helping them purchase the right plan for their needs,” says Waver.
She says helping clients book a dream vacation is exciting – but
helping them plan for the unexpected is essential. “Travel advisors should continue to position insurance as essential to every booking and not just an optional add-on. This includes explaining coverage details and exclusions, especially for international travel. By guiding clients through Manulife’s comprehensive coverage options, they help protect their investment and offer peace of mind that can make all the difference if something goes wrong.”
Waver says Manulife believes travel insurance is best delivered through the company’s trusted travel agent network. That’s why Manulife is committed to supporting travel professionals and their clients at every stage of the journey.
“Recently we launched our new digital platform across our agency network,” says Waver. “It’s designed to streamline the travel agent’s experience by making it easier to match clients with the right coverage for their travels, which simplifies the insurance process with intuitive tools, including the Non-Medical Premium Protection Plan, the Product Selector Tool and automated engagement reminders.”
What’s new? “We’ve introduced new product offerings, including the NonMedical Premium Protection Plan, which offers greater flexibility for clients who don’t require emergency medical coverage. Additionally, our new 5% companion discount for bookings with two or more travellers has been very well received, adding even more value for clients planning trips together.”
Travel insurance plays a critical role in rebuilding traveller confidence by helping people navigate life’s unknowns, she adds. “Knowing they have a financial safety net in place helps reduce anxiety around ‘what if’ scenarios such as illness, cancellations, or disruptions, making travellers more comfortable committing to plans. Just as importantly, it allows them to fully enjoy their trip knowing they’re protected if the unexpected happens. Travel insurance not only supports peace of mind before departure but enhances the overall travel experience.”

Discover Airlines takes off into the future with ‘Ocean Blue’ long-haul cabin
Discover Airlines is sending a clear signal for the future with the largest investment in its history: its long-haul fleet – a total of 16 Airbus A330-300s – will be equipped with a completely new cabin, dubbed ‘Ocean Blue.’
The first aircraft with the new cabin will take to the skies in April 2027, with the rest of the Airbus A330 fleet to be retrofitted gradually thereafter. All aircraft are scheduled to be equipped with the new cabin by mid-2028. After the refit, each Airbus A330 will have 288 seats: 227 in Economy Class, 31 in Premium Economy Class and 30 in Business Class.
OCEAN BLUE: HOLIDAY FEELING, QUALITY AND COMFORT
The new cabin is aptly named, with bold blue tones, clear shapes, selected colour accents, and fine details that create a high-quality ambience that extends across all three classes.
The name Ocean Blue is also an homage to the company’s history. Discover Airlines, part of Lufthansa Group, started in 2020 as an internal project under the name ‘Ocean.’
A GENUINE UPGRADE IN ALL TRAVEL CLASSES
Thanks to optimized seating, Economy Class passengers will benefit from more legroom and a comfortable seat angle in future.
In Premium Economy Class, the seat uses a hard-shell design and seats can be adjusted effortlessly without disturbing fellow passengers. Discreet privacy screens ensure greater privacy. A large seat recline, an integrated leg rest and built-in reading lights allow for flexible and comfortable seating positions.
In Business Class, the 1-2-1 configuration gives every seat direct access to the aisle. Around half of the seats are paired seats, with an adjustable privacy divider that allows passengers to choose between privacy and shared travel moments. As before,
the seats can be converted into a flat bed approximately two metres long.
A special highlight are the two new Business Class Suite seats in the front row. With sliding doors approximately 1.20 meters high, 32” monitors,
open legroom, more space and storage and an expanded culinary offering, they provide maximum privacy and comfort. Thanks to the privacy divider, the suite can be used together or separately.
All classes will feature significantly larger 4K touchscreens with integrated Bluetooth functionality for connecting personal devices such as headphones. And while the entire long-haul fleet already offers Internet access, in the future, all aircraft will be upgraded to the fastest in-flight internet currently available from Starlink, and available to guests free of charge.
“With this investment, we are setting new standards for long-haul leisure flights. Five years after our founding, we are investing a three-digit million euro sum specifically in comfort, quality and the travel experience of our guests,” says Ulrich Lindner, CEO, Discover Airlines.

AIRLINES
Air Canada has taken delivery of its first A321XLR, marking a milestone in its fleet modernization and network growth strategy. The nextgen single-aisle aircraft is the first of 30 A321XLRs slated to join the carrier’s fleet in the coming years. It’s designed to operate longer routes more efficiently, enabling Air Canada to explore new transatlantic and transcontinental city pairs. Air Canada has also posted its Q1 financial results, with operating revenues up 11% YOY to $5.8 billion. Demand remains solid and resilient amid elevated geopolitical instability, says CEO Michael Rousseau, however FY 2026 guidance has been suspended.
Flight attendants at WestJet have issued a formal notice of dispute after more than seven months of negotiations failed to produce what the union describes as meaningful progress on key issues. The group, represented by CUPE 8125, represents some 4,400 cabin crew members at WestJet mainline. At the centre of the dispute is what the union says is a widening gap between the work flight attendants are required to perform and how that work is compensated..
DISRUPTIONS
The federal government aims to outsource the air passenger complaints process to a third party in a bid to clear the massive backlog at the country’s transport regulator. In Ottawa’s spring economic update, the Liberals said they plan to import a model used in the UK and Europe that sees independent adjudicators resolve complaints over issues ranging from refunds to accessibility. The change would mark an end to the current in-house process under the Canadian Transportation Agency, where the backlog sits at a record 97,000 complaints. The upcoming legislation also aims to simplify the passenger rights charter “so that rules are clearer and passengers are fairly and more quickly compensated,” the government said.
TOUR OPERATORS
Intrepid Travel is taking a stand on pricing stability, confirming it will not introduce additional surcharges on any existing or new bookings made in 2026. The move comes as fluctuating fuel, currency and operational costs continue to impact the broader travel industry. Intrepid says its approach is designed to give travellers and travel advisors greater confidence at the time of booking. “Travel should feel exciting, not uncertain,” says Christian Wolters, President of Canada at Intrepid Travel. He added: “We know confidence matters when booking a trip, and that starts with clarity on price.”

WTAAA calls for greater transparency on airline surcharges
JOHANNESBURG — The World Travel Agents Associations Alliance (WTAAA) is calling on airlines to adopt a more transparent and collaborative approach to airlineimposed surcharges.
Airlines in Canada, the U.S. and around the world have implemented surcharges in the wake of the Iran war, amid soaring jet fuel costs.
The WTAAA says that with travellers facing unprecedented confusion over fluctuating costs and geopolitical disruptions, they are increasingly relying on the expertise of travel professionals. The Alliance warns that inconsistent and opaque surcharge practices are eroding consumer trust at precisely the moment when clarity matters most.
Airline-imposed surcharges, often coded as YQ or YR on airline tickets, were originally associated with fuelcost recovery but are now used more broadly by some carriers as carrierimposed charges, notes the WTAAA. They may appear under different labels, including ‘fuel surcharge’ or ‘international surcharge,’ and inconsistent terminology and treatment can make it difficult for consumers to understand the true price of travel.
WTAAA says it is particularly concerned where airline-imposed surcharges are not refunded after a flight is cancelled, especially when the cancellation is initiated by the airline. In many jurisdictions, including the EU and U.S., refund regimes require repayment of the full ticket amount, including applicable airline-imposed fees, when the passenger is entitled to a refund
and does not accept an alternative offered itinerary.
“At a time of global uncertainty, travellers need clarity and confidence when they book. Travel advisors are often the ones explaining complex charges and assisting clients when plans are disrupted,” said Otto de Vries, Executive Director of the WTAAA. “While the WTAAA position is not opposed to legitimate cost recovery where required to support airline operations in a volatile geopolitical and fuel environment, greater transparency on airlineimposed surcharges would help strengthen consumer trust across the value chain. We support transparent pricing practices that help consumers understand the full cost of travel and reinforce confidence in the professional travel distribution system.”
The WTAAA adds that while the Alliance recognizes that no single solution will apply uniformly across every market, one principle remains universal: consumers, and the professionals who serve them, “are increasingly seeking honesty, consistency and clarity in how the true cost of travel is presented and communicated.”
Air Canada cuts capacity YVR to YHZ, YQB and MIA, and YYZ-SXM
MONTREAL — Air Canada’s capacity cuts are set to impact more routes.
Air Canada has reduced capacity in summer and fall from Vancouver to Halifax, Quebec City and Miami, and from Toronto to St. Maarten.
These latest capacity reductions come on the heels of Air Canada’s suspended service between Toronto and Yellowknife at the end of August, and between Fort McMurray and Vancouver in late May. To the U.S., Air Canada is suspending its YYZSLC effective June 30, with an eye to resuming the route next year.
Internationally, Air Canada has called off its new nonstop service to Guadalajara out of of YUL, set to begin June 2.
Air Canada has also removed its Montreal-Algiers service launch from its schedule. Flights were set to begin June 1 and run through Sept. 23.
Airlines worldwide are making capacity cuts and in some cases suspending routes amid concerns about jet fuel shortages and ongoing tensions affecting oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz.
Air Transat expands winter sun program with three new routes from YUL
MONTREAL — Air Transat is expanding its winter 2026-2027 schedule with the addition of three new sun destinations from Montreal, reinforcing its strategy to grow and diversify its South network.
The carrier will introduce service from Montreal to Oranjestad, Aruba (AUA),
Bridgetown, Barbados (BGI) and San José del Cabo, Mexico (SJD) with flights scheduled to begin in December 2026.
Service to Oranjestad will operate once weekly starting Dec. 12, 2026, while Bridgetown will see twiceweekly service beginning Dec. 13, 2026. Flights to San José del Cabo will operate once weekly starting Dec. 10, 2026. Frequencies reflect peak season plans and remain subject to regulatory approvals and airport slot availability.
According to Sebastian Ponce, Chief Revenue Officer at Transat, the expansion responds to sustained interest in warm-weather getaways.
“Demand for sun destinations remains strong, and these three new routes from Montreal allow us to meet that demand by expanding our offering. By adding Aruba, Barbados and Los Cabos, we are continuing to execute a strategy focused on diversifying and optimizing our network to the South, for the benefit of our clients, said Ponce.
The flights are now open for booking, with additional details from Air Transat’s full winter 2026-2027 program expected to be rolled out in the coming weeks.
Porter expands 202627 sun network by 150%, adds Los Cabos, MoBay and more
TORONTO — Porter Airlines is significantly expanding its sun network for winter 2026-27, adding four new destinations and boosting overall capacity by more than 150% as it continues its rapid North American growth.
The carrier will introduce new service to Aruba, Montego Bay, San José and Los Cabos, while also launching its first international
flights from Alberta. In total, Porter plans to operate more than 40 warm-weather routes next winter, building on its expanding presence across the Caribbean, Central America and Mexico.
The growth is being driven in part by the continued rollout of the Embraer E195-E2, which has enabled Porter to extend its reach beyond traditional markets. The airline will also expand service from key gateways including Toronto, Ottawa, Hamilton and Halifax, with new routes and increased frequencies across several popular sun destinations.
Western Canada is also seeing notable growth, with new routes from Edmonton to destinations including Puerto Vallarta, Los Cabos, Las Vegas and Phoenix, as well as new service from Calgary to Phoenix. Porter will also resume Vancouver–Phoenix service and add a second daily frequency from Toronto, offering onward connections via partner American Airlines.
Porter noted that it will be the only airline offering service to Aruba and Los Cabos from Ottawa, and Montego Bay from Hamilton. Across the network, nearly 5,000 flights to sun destinations are planned for the season.

Air France marks 50 years to YYZ with an irresistible French pastry pop-up
TORONTO — Air France’s one-of-akind new pastry shop, La Pâtisserie in the heart of downtown Toronto, celebrates Air France’s 50 years of connecting Paris and Toronto.
As Jean-Eudes de La Bretèche, Country Manager for Air FranceKLM in Canada, put it, “our goal is for Torontonians to experience the authentic taste and elegance of French pastry, mirroring what our Business Class guests enjoy at 35,000 feet.”
Open through May 17, the pop-up is open to the public at 151 Bloor St. West, offering offers visitors and dessert enthusiasts a rare opportunity to savour authentic French pastries beyond the airline’s cabin. The pastries are identical to those served in Air France’s Business Class.
BOUTIQUE CAFE EXPERIENCE
The shop also includes a retail area where pastries can be purchased for take-home, as well as a coffee service,
and a cozy lounge where guests can relax and enjoy their treats.
Beyond the tasting experience, the pop-up also pays tribute to Air France’s history in Toronto.
Visitors can explore a dedicated wall featuring nostalgic Air France memorabilia, including an original Concorde menu, tableware and glassware.
50 YEARS OF CONNECTION
Ushering in a brand-new campaign in 2026, Air France is highlighting its shift towards an “upmarket” experience – and that includes this showcase of its high-end pastry collaborations in its longhaul Business class. The initiative is part of a larger strategy to upgrade the passenger experience, featuring menus by Michelin-starred chef Régis Marcon.
Air France proudly remains the only airline in the world to serve champagne across all three cabin classes: economy, premium, and business.
Air France launched its TorontoParis service on May 21, 1976, using a Boeing 747 aircraft. At that time, it was the only airline
serving that route, operating three flights per week.
This summer Air France will expand its offering from Toronto to twice daily service.
“Historically, we see a bit more traffic coming from Canada, so the Canadian market is very important, especially for the Air France KLM Group,” said de La Bretèche. “Not only for Paris, but also for the entire network of destinations beyond Paris. That’s why the flights are really well connected to the rest of Europe, India and Africa.”
Getting to France is increasingly convenient with direct service across multiple Canadian gateways. As the peak summer season unfolds, Air France will also operate flights to Paris from Montreal (28 flights), Quebec City (4 flights), Ottawa (7 flights), and Vancouver (7 flights), for a total of 60 flights per week.
“Next month, we will be celebrating 50 years of connecting Toronto to Paris. It’s a significant milestone when you consider Air France’s 92year history,” says de La Bretèche, adding, “and a big part of that story is written in Canada.”.

WHERE YOUR HEART STAYS.
It’s that instant on a volcanic ridge where you realize there is nothing on your mind but the beauty set before you. That float in turquoise waters off Little Corn Island, where parrotfish flash beneath you and the current decides the direction—and you simply let go. Howler monkeys that greet the dawn. Birds that paint the sunrise. Cloud forests that wrap you in mist and whisper. Waves that have been rolling in since long before you—and will keep rolling long after.
This is not a destination you visit. It’s one that visits you back.
And in that exchange, something shifts. The noise fades. The pace slows. You remember what it feels like to simply be—in a place that expects nothing but your presence. It’s about the wonders waiting for you—the waterfalls, the hidden beaches, the quiet villages—ready to be explored. The place that leads you to stories, to stillness, to yourself. And when night falls, you are tucked into treetop casitas, suspended between earth and stars as the night creatures sing you to rest.
Some trips are about the itinerary. Out here, it’s about the pause. Nicaragua, Naturally Beautiful.

Transat sun packages with Porter flights coming for winter 2026-27
MONTREAL — Transat and Porter Airlines are taking another step forward in their commercial partnership by launching new Transat packages that combine Porter nonstop flights to Nassau, Grand Cayman, Cancun and Puerto Vallarta.
Since signing their joint venture in 2023, the two airlines “have been steadily bringing together their highly complementary networks.”
For the most in-demand destinations served by both carriers, like Cancun and Puerto Vallarta, packages will feature expanded flight options operated by either Porter or Air Transat.
Says Renée Boisvert, VP, Tour Operator Products at Transat: “These additions mark a significant enhancement to Transat’s South destination portfolio. Through our partnership with Porter Airlines, we’re expanding our reach with sought-after destinations like Nassau and George Town, while giving travellers more ways to build the trip that suits them best.”
Porter Airlines’ SVP and Chief Commercial Officer, Edmond Eldebs, added: “Our partnership with Transat is reaching a new milestone. Porter’s initial entry into traditional South vacation markets with an air-only product this season was a huge success. The introduction of packages gives Canadian travellers another seamless way to experience Porter’s elevated flying experience paired with Transat’s trusted package expertise. We’re proud of what we’re building together and excited about the possibilities it creates for travellers.”
Packages will be available from Toronto, Ottawa and Hamilton for travel on or after November 1, 2026.
“A space of their own”: Nexion Canada’s CanEx 2026 is a first, and a success
TORONTO — Nexion Canada’s CanEx event wrapped with a big win – not just for Nexion travel advisors, but everyone who capped the conference with Nexion’s fun get-together at a Toronto Blue Jays game.
Nexion Canada members cheering on the Jays had plenty to smile about, as the home team beat the Boston Red Sox 3-0.
It was the perfect way to end CanEx, which brought some 80 Nexion Canada advisors to the Toronto Airport Marriott Hotel April 27 - 28 for workshops, supplier presentations and networking events, plus an advisor peer panel.
Of course, there was also a trade show for CanEx, with Air Canada, ACV, AmaWaterways, Armstrong Collective Canada, Azamara Cruises, Bedsonline, Celebrity Cruises, CIE Tours, Crystal, Expedia TAAP, Globus family of brands, Goway, Manulife,
NCL, Prince Hotels, Royal Caribbean, Santos, SAS, Silversea, Sunwing, Tauck, Travefy, TravelBrands, Uniworld and Viking all taking part.
It was the first edition of CanEx for Nexion Canada, and no doubt there will be more, as the host agency enjoys steady growth in Canada. Nexion Travel Group is owned by Internova Travel Group, and a sister company to Travel Leaders Network.
when it comes to places like the Middle East or Cuba,” Friedman told Travelweek. “But for the most part, summer travel plans have been locked in. Children are out of school and families are eager to travel. I want to emphasize that last part – Canadians are travelling. They might choose to travel domestically, or trade Dubai for France, but they are travelling.
PEOPLE ARE BOOKING 12-18 MONTHS AHEAD OF TIME, OR WITHIN THREE MONTHS
Nexion Travel Group’s President, Jackie Friedman, had a blast at the Jays game, along with Esther Roemmele, Director of Canadian Operations at Nexion, and former President of Nexion Canada, Mike Foster.
“Here’s the interesting thing: yes, world events have caused people to consider their options, especially
She added: “What our members are seeing for booking windows is something interesting: people are booking 12-18 months ahead or time, or within three months. Summer travel plans are set, or people are waiting until the last minute, which is a risk with properties, planes and ships booking up quickly.”

Nicko Cruises agency hub now accepting registrations
TORONTO — Travel agency registrations for Nicko Cruises are now open through the cruise line’s Travel Agency Booking Hub.
The dedicated platform allows agents to make and review Nicko Cruises reservations with ease. Nicko is represented in Canada by Discover the World Canada.
Agents can select sailings and book preferred cabins through live availability. The five-day booking option allows agents to hold cabins without payment. A 20% deposit (if booked more than 35 days prior to departure) will be due if the booking becomes firm and final payment is collected 30 days prior to departure.
Nicko’s modern river fleet consists of 21 ships in the four and five star category sailing the Duoro, Rhine, Danube, Rhone, Saone and Seine.
There are more than 10 routings to chose from on the Danube and 11 routings on the Rhine rivers alone, giving clients a variety of sailing ranges to choose from. Advisors can offer their clients a four-night Advent cruise on the Danube, a seven-night cruise on the Seine, a five-night cruise on the Rhine or an eight-night New Year’s cruise on the Danube.
Last week Nicko announced a fuel surcharge, as rising global fuel prices continue to impact operating costs across the cruise sector.
For river cruises, the surcharge is €8 per person per night. It applies to departures effective May 1, 2026, and will remain in effect for all river cruises departing up to Dec. 31, 2026. The surcharge will apply to both new and existing bookings.
Sell-out crowds for Destination Colombia Roadshow 2026
TORONTO Colombia brought a touch of elegance – and a clear sales message – to Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver last week at ProColombia’s Destination Colombia Roadshow 2026.
The events gathered industry professionals, tour operators and media for a polished networking event that showcased not only Colombia’s tourism diversity, but also its growing importance as a must-sell destination for the Canadian market.
“Canada and Colombia are closer than we think – not just geographically, but in how easily our people connect,” said ProColombia’s Juan Sebastian Sanchez Chica. “Today, that closeness is reflected in how easy it is to travel between our countries.
A DIVERSE DESTINATION
Sanchez highlighted the country’s six distinct tourism regions, encouraging advisors to think of
them as “six different worlds,” each offering unique landscapes, cultures and itineraries.
He also underscored one of Colombia’s strongest selling points: year-round travel. “We don’t have seasons in the traditional sense,” he noted. “That means your clients can visit anytime and still have a completely different experience depending on where they go.”
According to ProColombia’s data, leisure travel dominates the market, accounting for more than 90% of visits, with couples and families making up the majority of travellers. Nature, culture and immersive experiences to rank among the top motivators.
MOMENTUM BUILDING
From luxury and experiential travel to logistics and niche programming, the range of supplier partners on hand for Destination Colombia Roadshow 2026 reflected Colombia’s growing sophistication and its ability to cater to a wide spectrum of client needs. Colombia’s upward trajectory in Canada shows no signs of slowing. The destination now welcomes
ProColombia’s Juan Sebastian Sanchez Chica at the Toronto stop of the Destination Colombia Roadshow 2026
millions of international visitors annually, with Canada representing a growing and increasingly valuable source market.
“Beyond the statistics, what really matters are the experiences,” said Sanchez. “This is a place where travellers can discover something new every single day – different climates, ecosystems and cultures, all within one country.”
Canadian travellers are also venturing beyond the traditional hotspots of Bogotá, Cartagena and Medellín, with growing interest in emerging regions and experiential travel, from coffee culture to community-based tourism.
CONNECTIVITY DRIVING GROWTH
Air access continues to be a key driver. Toronto stands out as a major gateway, with strong seat capacity and multiple weekly frequencies connecting travellers directly to Colombia.
Carriers including Air Canada, Air Transat and Avianca maintain consistent service, supported by additional lift from Sunwing and WestJet. In total, the Canada-Colombia market has seen approximately 1,200 annual frequencies and more than 250,000 seats, reinforcing the destination’s accessibility for Canadian clients.
TOOLS, TRAINING & FAMS
For travel advisors, the message from ProColombia was clear: support is readily available to help convert interest into bookings.
The organization continues to invest in a suite of trade-focused initiatives, including major annual events such as Colombia Travel Mart, Colombia Nature Travel Mart and Colombia Meetings Travel Mart.
Equally important is the Colombia Destination Specialist program, which provides flexible, multiplatform training designed to deepen product knowledge and boost sales confidence.
“We want to give you the tools to really understand the destination and connect with the right partners,” Sanchez said, noting that advisors can access training modules, marketing assets and destination content across multiple devices – even offline.
FAM trips and immersive experiences also remain a cornerstone of ProColombia’s strategy, allowing advisors to experience firsthand the product they’re selling.
SLAM returns with immersive Saint Lucia experiences for travel advisors
TORONTO — The Saint Lucia Tourism Authority (SLTA) is reaffirming its commitment to strengthening partnerships with the travel trade through its annual travel advisor incentive programme, Saint Lucia Advisors Months (SLAM).
Running from June through November, the program offers
booking incentives alongside exclusive accommodation rates for qualified travel advisors.
Designed to immerse travel professionals in the authentic Saint Lucian experience, SLAM offers participating advisors the opportunity to discover the island’s rich culture and natural beauty first-hand. During their stay, advisors will enjoy curated land and sea excursions, guided tours and indulgent experiences showcasing the island’s diverse cuisine, tastes, sights and sounds.
The program also features a dedicated day of structured site inspections at Saint Lucia’s hotels and resorts, including the newly constructed holistic wellness property, LifeCo, and the new ultraluxurious 10-bedroom estate villa, La belle Helene by Windjammer Landing.
“This program is one of our most impactful initiatives for deepening engagement with our valued travel partners,” said Louis E. A. Lewis, CEO of the Saint Lucia Tourism Authority.
“By experiencing the destination firsthand, advisors are better equipped to authentically sell Saint Lucia’s unique blend of culture, adventure and hospitality. SLAM strengthens these relationships but also drives meaningful growth for our tourism sector by turning product knowledge into passion and bookings.”

Florida gains market share from U.S.-bound
Canadian
travellers:
VISIT FLORIDA
TORONTO — VISIT FLORIDA’s CEO Bryan Griffin may be relatively new to the job – but he’s not new to the destination. Far from it.
As a fourth-generation Floridian, Griffin knows every nook and cranny of The Sunshine State, and he’s a fan of every city, town and all 2,170 kilometres of coastline.
“I love Florida, I’ve been all over the state,” he tells Travelweek. “And I know how important tourism is to Florida. Tourism is the backbone of the Florida economy.”
Griffin, who took over as VISIT FLORIDA’s CEO in August 2025, was in Toronto recently as part of a VISIT FLORIDA sales mission, working with VoX International which represents VISIT FLORIDA in Canada. Earlier this month an industry event at Toronto’s Real Sports Bar reinforced VISIT FLORIDA’s show of commitment to this market, and to the travel trade.
“FLORIDA IS THAT RELIABLY FUN DESTINATION”
Florida’s initial estimates for 2025 from Canada pegs visitation from this market at 2.9 million travellers.
Year over year, that’s down by about 500,000, says Griffin. But on a positive note, the share of U.S.bound Canadian travellers heading to Florida actually increased. “Florida’s market share of Canadian travellers to the U.S. was 16.8%. In 2025 it was 19.8%. It went up.”
Why? “Because Florida is that reliably fun destination,” said Griffin.
Of course return visits to Florida are “very popular” with Canadians.
Plenty of new-to-Florida travellers are arriving from Canada too. Whether vacationers are first-timers or perennial visitors, VISIT FLORIDA is focused on showcasing ‘the new in the known,’ combing iconic highlights with unexpected discoveries.
“People say, I know what I’m comfortable with, but I want to find new experiences in my Florida vacation,” says Griffin. “It speaks to our message of dispersion. We want to spread the economic benefit around the state.”
Travellers are also looking for value. “Not just from Canada. People around the world are cost-conscious. Florida is a state where you can find value everywhere,” he says.
Lastly, vacationers these days are all about experiential travel. “That includes sporting events. Concerts. Experiences they can’t miss. You see people taking shorter but more frequent visits” for these types of trips, he says.
Florida’s world-famous attractions, meanwhile, are as compelling as ever, from Walt Disney World Resort, to Universal Orlando Resort, SeaWorld Orlando, LEGOLAND Florida and many, many more. Florida also has more than 100 brand new hotels currently under construction as of January 2026.
“OTHER
STATES
HAVE PULLED BACK. FLORIDA HAS NOT”
There’s another reason Florida continues to perform well in the Canadian market, and that’s consistency, says Griffin.
“We have been consistent. Other states have pulled back. Florida has not,” he says. “We remain consistently in this market, and we’ve kept up our trade missions. Canadian travel is very important to Florida and nothing about that has changed. And
our desire for Canadian travellers haven’t changed either.”
‘Live More Floridays’, VISIT FLORIDA’s new-for-2026 campaign, is running in both English and French. And more than 1,280 Canadian travel advisors have completed VISIT FLORIDA’s Florida Travel Pro specialist program.
“It’s incredibly important, the work that VISIT FLORIDA does to help travel advisors become specialists in Florida,” says Griffin, adding that making sure travel advisors know all about Florida’s variety of experiences is key. “We want people to be experts in Florida, and give them the opportunity to develop new experiences for their clients.”
Florida is well-served for lift, highlighted this year by Air Canada’s extra 50,000 seats to the state and Porter’s two new direct routes from YHM to Ft. Lauderdale and Orlando.
Also notable: Florida will rejoin Air Transat’s winter 2026-2027 program, with service to Fort Lauderdale resuming after a summer pause. Air Transat plans to operate up to seven weekly flights from Montreal, three from Quebec City and one from Halifax.
“WE’RE HERE TO HELP”
These are challenging times to be sure but Griffin says he’s happy with VISIT FLORIDA’s efforts, in Canada and inbound markets globally.
“We live in an increasingly busy world in terms of attention span,” he says. “But our data shows that 59% of Florida visitors said VISIT FLORIDA-controlled marketing effort influenced their decision to come to Florida.”
Canadian travel advisors can be assured that VISIT FLORIDA is a trusted partner: “Please use us a resource. We want to help make you a Florida expert. Visit our site. Come to our missions. We’re here to help.”
“We
are close to home”: Interview with John Waggoner as Victory Cruise Lines sets sail again
TORONTO — Victory Cruise Lines is back in Toronto – and its 2026 Great Lakes cruise season is now underway.
Now in its second season of operations, the relaunched cruise company with founder and chairman John Waggoner at the wheel is once again offering all-inclusive, small ship, coastal cruising onboard Victory I and Victory II. The 190-guest ships are purpose-built to cruise on all five Great Lakes, the St. Lawrence Seaway and the Maritimes.
Victory Cruise Lines continues to offer more itineraries that visit all five Great Lakes in a single voyage than any other cruise line, with 35 itineraries scheduled to call on Toronto in 2026.
During the winter layup, Victory I and Victory II underwent a US$5 million fleet enhancement combining technical overhauls, regulatory compliance and elevated guestexperience upgrades.
There were smiles, handshakes and plenty of hugs as Jade Tours –known for its Asia product, but also a go-to for South America, the Middle East and Europe too – marked its 50th anniversary with a big industry party. Jade Tours CEO Danny Ng was front and centre all night, welcoming guests and surrounded by his team of loyal staff, for the event at the Hilton Toronto/ Markham Suites Conference Centre & Spa.
Waggoner is well-known in the industry as the founder of American Queen Voyages (AQV), with its historic fleet of paddlewheelers. AQV acquired Victory Cruise Lines, in its original incarnation, back in 2019. After some twists and turns Victory I and Victory II went up for sale – and in something like a full circle moment, Waggoner bought the two vessels in spring 2024.
Given its size, and certainly the current political climate, the U.S. is still the big fish for Victory Cruise Lines. “We are still primarily focused on the U.S. market to source,” Waggoner told Travelweek.
That said, Canadian bookings for the 2026 are up versus 2025. Amid a 13-month decline in Canada-to-U.S. travel, is there finally a plateau? Or is it just that more Canadians know about Victory’s Great Lakes sailings in this second year of operation? No doubt 2026 will be a tell-tale year from this market.
“Victory Cruise Lines continues to market to the Canadian traveller through our sales and marketing efforts with our Canada-based agencies, most notably with Ensemble. These efforts have resulted in increased awareness as well as bookings,” Waggoner told Travelweek.
He added: “The biggest difference for us in 2026 is significant expansion is the season growing to 40 all-inclusive voyages, up from a smaller inaugural slate in 2025, and with 34 itineraries sailing all five Great Lakes, reinforcing the line’s core regional focus. Quebec City becomes a major endpoint through newly added Quebec City-Chicago and reverse sailings, while Portland, Maine is used more extensively for Portland-Quebec City and Portland–Toronto routes.”
This year also introduces two Chicago round-trip cruises, plus new Toronto-Milwaukee and MilwaukeeToronto sailings.
“The expanded season also brings new ports of call, including Pictured Rocks, Sturgeon Bay, Whitefish Bay, Trois-Rivières, Gaspé, Baie-Comeau and Saguenay,” says Waggoner. His message for agents? “We are close to home. Our cruises offer experiences in great Canadian destinations as well as U.S. destinations along the five Great Lakes.”
The new travel advisor portal launched in February, and the cruise line is evaluating the need for a GSA in Canada.
