Why younger travellers skip travel insurance

and how advisors can win them over

TORONTO — Travel insurance

has arguably never been more important than it is today. Amid ongoing geopolitical tensions, rising travel costs and high jet fuel prices contributing to flight disruptions and reduced airline capacity, today’s travel environment is more unpredictable than ever. Add in weather events and shifting border requirements, and the risks of travelling without coverage are harder to ignore.

Yet despite this, Gen Z and Millennial travellers – two of the most active and experience-driven travel segments – continue to be the least likely cohorts to purchase travel insurance. According to Skyscanner, 52% of Gen Z travellers globally take at least three leisure trips per year. However, data from Emergency Assistance Plus shows that nearly two-thirds of millennials are currently travelling without coverage.

Why are younger travellers choosing not to protect themselves and their travel investment? And how can travel advisors better communicate the value of insurance to a generation focused on experiences, flexibility and budgetconscious travel? Travelweek spoke with Will McAleer, Travel Health Insurance Association (THIA) spokesperson, to find out.

IT COMES DOWN TO COST

According to McAleer, the issue is not apathy toward protection but a mix

of budget pressure, optimism bias and misunderstanding about what coverage actually provides.

“Younger Canadians generally do not opt out of travel insurance because they are reckless. More often, it comes down to cost, confidence and confusion,” he says, noting that many are highly skilled at budgeting and finding deals.

“Many Gen Z and Millennial travellers are very good at finding lower-cost flights, alternative accommodations and flexible itineraries, but insurance can sometimes be viewed as an optional add-on rather than part of the essential cost of the trip,” he says.

COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS

A key misconception is the belief that health and age reduce the need for coverage.

“One of the most common misconceptions is that travel insurance is mainly for older travellers or people with known medical conditions,” says McAleer.

“For younger travellers, there can also be a sense of ‘I’m healthy, I’m only going for a few days, and nothing serious will happen to me.’”

In reality, he notes, claims involving younger travellers are often unrelated to chronic illness.

“Many travel insurance claims involving younger travellers are not about chronic illness. They can involve accidents, foodborne illness, scooter or hiking injuries,

lost baggage, delayed flights, missed connections, or a family emergency that forces someone to cancel or come home early.”

Another persistent misunderstanding is reliance on provincial health coverage, which only pays a small portion of a medical emergency and provides no coverage for disrupted travel plans. Plus, many Canadians assume that if they’re travelling within Canada, coverage isn’t needed.

“But provincial health plans do not necessarily cover everything,” says McAleer, “and they generally do not address the broader travel risks, which include transportation home, emergency air or ground ambulance, trip interruption and lost baggage.”

INCREASED EXPOSURE

Ironically, while Gen Z and Millennials are among the least likely travellers to purchase insurance, they’re often travelling in ways that increase both complexity and risk exposure.

“Younger travellers are often experience-driven,” says McAleer. “They are more likely to build trips around adventure, festivals, sporting events, destination weddings, multi-city itineraries, remote work, backpacking or destinations that are less familiar and less predictable.”

These styles of travel, while appealing, introduce more variables.

“A multi-destination itinerary, for example, creates more opportunities for missed connections, baggage delays, schedule changes or a

medical event in a place where the traveller does not know the local health system.”

Even routine activities can carry risk.

“Hiking, cycling, skiing, surfing, scooter rentals and boat excursions

“What happens if you break an ankle on a hike in Costa Rica? What if your flight cancellation causes you to miss the first night of a multicity itinerary? What if you get sick before a $3,000 festival or a destination wedding trip?”

INSURANCE HELPS PROTECT THE EXPERIENCE, NOT JUST THE EXPENSE

can all lead to injuries that require assessment, treatment or transport.”

For McAleer, one of the most important but overlooked elements of insurance is assistance.

“This is where emergency assistance and evacuation services become extremely important,” he says. “Travel insurance is not just a reimbursement product.”

REFRAMING THE CONVERSATION

For travel advisors, McAleer says the messaging needs to shift from product selling to experience protection.

“You are investing in the trip. Insurance helps protect the experience, not just the expense.”

He also recommends using realworld scenarios rather than abstract risk messaging.

The key, he says, is relevance. After all, the goal is not simply to sell insurance – it’s to help the traveller make an informed decision.

“For younger travellers, advisors should also highlight benefits that feel practical and immediate: 24/7 emergency assistance, help finding care, trip interruption, baggage delay, missed connection support, emergency medical coverage, and evacuation or transportation when medically necessary.”

WHY NOW MORE THAN EVER?

The travel landscape isn’t what it used to be, says McAleer. Five to 10 years ago, many travellers primarily associated travel insurance with medical emergencies. Today, however, geopolitical tensions, global health concerns, severe weather events and evolving border

policies have made coverage more important than ever.

“Even if a traveller is not going to a high-risk region, global events can still affect them,” he says. “A fuel disruption of regional conflict can lead to rerouted aircraft, cancelled flights, longer travel times, added hotel costs or limited availability. Severe weather can close airports or delay cruises, while a border or entry-system change can create missed connections.”

It’s also worth noting that the cost of travel – including medical care abroad, hotels, flights and last-minute transportation – has increased significantly in recent years.

“A traveller who becomes stranded and needs to change flights or requires medical treatment can face expenses that are far beyond the cost of the original trip,” adds McAleer.

While insurance cannot prevent disruption and does not cover every situation, a comprehensive policy –combined with emergency assistance services – can provide travellers with access to expertise, care coordination and financial protection when they need it most.

“The message to younger Canadians is simple,” says McAleer. “Travel insurance is not about expecting the worst – it’s about protecting your ability to keep travelling, recover from the unexpected and get help when you are far from home.”

Make it Mexican Caribbean: ‘The Vacation Capital’ courts travel trade

VAUGHAN — “There’s a reason we’re known as the ‘Vacation Capital of the World,’ and it’s thanks to each one of you,” said Dave Cecco, VP of Mexican Caribbean Canada, during last week’s trade show and dinner event in Vaughan, ON.

The Mexican Caribbean, a perennial favourite among Canadians, received a warm reception as it strengthened relationships through a two-city roadshow in Vaughan, and Calgary.

Joined by 14 hotel partners, tour operators and hotel associations from the Riviera Maya and Cancun, most of whom travelled from Mexico for the event, the lively evening featured one-on-one networking, update presentations and lots of prizes for more than 80 travel professionals.

CANADA REMAINS A KEY MARKET

Canada is a vital market for the Mexican Caribbean, ranking second

in visitor numbers after the U.S.

The region continues to reach new heights and enhance its appeal, as Canadians continue to ‘value’ value, a sentiment echoed by Cecco.

As Travelweek reported exclusively in March, the Mexican Caribbean Tourism Board appointed Cecco as its first-ever Canadian representative, signalling a renewed focus on one of its most important source markets.

The Mexican Caribbean is much more than just Cancun, as Cecco points out. The tourism board is doubling down on efforts to raise awareness and promote bookings across the region’s diverse destinations.

For travel advisors, the opportunity lies in showing clients a different side of the Mexican Caribbean.

“There are 12 destinations in one, and this region offers everything Canadian travellers seek, including culture, luxury, adventure, and the perfect settings for romance, weddings and family vacations,” Cecco told Travelweek.

WHY WAIT FOR WINTER?

According to Cecco, clients can travel any time of year as there is so much more to discover that will keep them coming back, and creating lasting memories year-round.

BOOKINGS MADE EASIER

This peak winter season will see increased capacity to the Mexican Caribbean, with over 200 weekly flights from 21 city gateways across Canada. The expansion ensures direct and convenient access to this popular destination.

Air Transat has announced summer flights to Cancun, with daily departures from Toronto and Montreal and weekly departures from Quebec City. During the winter season, daily flights will also be available from Toronto, Montreal and Quebec City. Additionally, Ottawa will have flights three times a week, Halifax four times a week, and weekly flights from Windsor, London, Moncton, Charlottetown and

Fredericton. Tulum will be accessible from Montreal with four direct flights per week.

Air Canada and ACV also have extensive flight and package offerings to Cancun, Riviera Maya and other Mexican Caribbean destinations.

Air Transat and Porter recently announced a joint venture to provide integrated vacation packages to Cancun. This expansion further increases flight availability, providing daily services from Toronto and Montreal, as well as six weekly flights from Ottawa and Hamilton.

Travellers will now have access to over 150 hotels and resorts across the portfolio, along with improved, flexible flight times.

WestJet Vacations and Sunwing Vacations also provided updates for the Mexican Caribbean, including vacation packages available on WestJet flights and transfers with Nexus Tours.

As part of Sunwing Vacations Group, WestJet Vacations and Sunwing Vacations collectively fly daily yearround to Cancun from Calgary and Toronto. The winter season will see additional daily flights from Edmonton, Vancouver and Winnipeg, and twice-weekly from Thunder Bay,

London, Kitchener and Hamilton.

Also, for the upcoming winter season, Cozumel will see weekly flights from Calgary and up to twice weekly from Toronto and Montreal. Tulum will also enjoy two flights weekly from Calgary, three from Toronto and four from Montreal.

INVESTING IN ADVISOR SUCCESS

Prioritizing travel advisors means prioritizing tools and resources for the trade. And that’s exactly what the Mexican Caribbean is doing.

Cecco highlighted the tourism board’s Ambassador training program, launched last year, which

is a great way for travel advisors to stay informed about the latest offerings and incentives. Graduates of the program become certified as official Mexican Caribbean Ambassadors. Click here to register.

“We’ll have many FAM trips coming up, with plenty of opportunities for advisors who become destination ambassadors,” said Cecco. “This invaluable certification enables you to fully understand the scope of what the region has to offer.”

New research commissioned by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) warns that lengthy border delays linked to Europe’s upcoming Entry/Exit System (EES) could deter millions of travellers and put billions in tourism spending at risk. The study found that up to 41 million visitor arrivals from the U.K., U.S., Canada and Australia could be affected if travellers regularly face border waits of three hours or more when entering the Schengen Area. WTTC estimates that as much as US$45.4 billion in visitor spending could be at risk. While support for the new biometric border system remains strong, WTTC is urging European governments to improve traveller awareness, digital pre-registration and border readiness ahead of implementation..

AIRLINES

Airbus and Lufthansa Group are marking 50 years of partnership, a milestone celebrated at the ILA Berlin Air Show. Lufthansa is expected to take delivery of its 700th Airbus aircraft later this year. Alongside the anniversary, Lufthansa signed a component services agreement covering its Airbus A220 fleet and reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable aviation initiatives with Airbus. Lufthansa recently finalized an order for 10 additional Airbus A350-900 aircraft, bringing its total

A350 orders to 75. The two companies also highlighted ongoing efforts to improve fuel efficiency and advance aircraft technology.

The new destination becomes the fifth addition to Porter’s winter sun lineup, following the recent announcements of service to Aruba, San Jose, Costa Rica, Montego Bay and Los Cabos.

WestJet suspends Cuba operations indefinitely, hopeful for island’s return

CALGARY — WestJet has posted next steps for Cuba-booked passengers, now that the airline has announced that it too has suspended operations to the island indefinitely.

WestJet’s announcement follows similar updates from Air Canada and Transat, as well as ACV, Sunwing Vacations Group and major hotel companies

including Blue Diamond Resorts Cuba, Iberostar and Melia.

“Following a review of the current operating environment in Cuba, WestJet airlines has made the difficult decision to indefinitely suspend all flying until further notice,” said WestJet in a post.

“As the former leading Canadian airline in Cuba, WestJet recognizes this news is meaningful for guests and tourism partners. The airline remains optimistic about the island’s path to long-term recovery and its return as one of Canadian’s favourite leisure destinations.”

WestJet said travellers with current air-only travel reservations for this winter will be notified of the flight suspensions as early as June 21, and will be provided with refund and change options.

Travellers with existing vacation package bookings with Sunwing, WestJet Vacations and WestJet Vacations Québec will be contacted directly and provided with options, including rebooking to an alternative destination or cancelling for a full refund.

Air Transat boosts booking flexibility and confirms summer fuel supply

MONTREAL — Air Transat is introducing enhanced flexibility on select fare categories for the summer travel season while also reassuring customers that its summer flight program will operate as planned despite ongoing concerns surrounding fuel supply.

Travellers booking Eco Standard or Club Standard fares between June 5

cancel for a full refund up to 24 hours before departure. Travellers booking vacation packages can also purchase Option Flex, which starts at $99 and allows for additional trip modifications.

FUEL SECURED FOR SUMMER

Alongside the fare announcement, Air Transat is further reassuring travellers that it has secured sufficient fuel to operate its full summer schedule.

After confirming earlier this month that it had secured the fuel needed to support its summer operations, the airline said it continues to work closely with partners and suppliers and has established a robust supply chain to ensure fuel availability across its network.

According to Air Transat, flights are currently operating as scheduled and the company continues to monitor the situation while maintaining close coordination with its partners.

Transat reports $79M Q2 loss, hit by fuel prices and suspension of flights to Cuba

Transat chief executive Annick Guérard said the results were disappointing.

The travel company says the loss amounted to $1.94 per diluted share for the quarter ended April 30.

The result compared with a loss of $22.9 million or 58 cents per diluted share in the same quarter last year.

were disappointing as factors largely beyond our control severely impacted profitability,” she said.

“The suspension of flights to Cuba and the material increase in aviation fuel prices, an industry-wide crisis, resulted in an estimated negative impact of $95 million on adjusted EBITDA, of which approximately $70 million is attributable to higher fuel costs in March and April.

“The impact of rising aviation fuel prices persisted through May, resulting in additional costs compared to the same period last year.”

Though Transat has adjusted capacity and implemented surcharges on new bookings, which were well absorbed by consumers and helped mitigate the impact of rising fuel costs, “recent market volatility has weakened pricing power,” added Guérard.

Following news earlier this week that the federal government has offered a loan to struggling airlines amid rising fuel costs, Guérard said she welcomed the Liquidity for Airline Sector Resilience (LASR) facility.

“This initiative reflects the essential role aviation plays in the Canadian economy. Transat intends to apply to the LASR facility, which would provide meaningful support as we continue to navigate the current environment with discipline while maintaining our focus on customers and stakeholders,” she said.

WestJet expands European reach with new partnerships

CALGARY — WestJet is expanding its European connectivity through two new airline partnerships that will improve access between Canada and Europe.

The Calgary-based carrier has announced a reciprocal codeshare agreement with Icelandair and a new Special Prorate Agreement (SPA) with Air Serbia, both designed to offer travellers more destination options and smoother connections.

The Icelandair agreement, signed at the 2026 IATA AGM in Rio de Janeiro, will allow travellers to access a broader network of destinations through a single booking and ticket, along with through-checked baggage. Pending regulatory approval, WestJet guests will be able to connect to more than 10 European destinations via Icelandair’s hub at Keflavík International Airport (KEF).

“Strengthening our longstanding partnership with Icelandair marks an

important step in expanding choice and connectivity to Canadians. By leveraging Icelandair’s extensive network through Reykjavik, we’re opening more seamless access to Europe while deepening a partnership that delivers greater value and convenience for travellers,” said John Weatherill, WestJet Executive Vice-President and Chief Commercial Officer.

WestJet has also entered into a new partnership with Air Serbia that will strengthen links between Canada and southeastern Europe.

Through Air Serbia’s direct flights between Belgrade and Toronto, travellers will be able to connect to a number of Canadian destinations served by WestJet, including Ottawa, Montreal, Halifax, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver.

The airlines say the agreement will provide greater flexibility, increased destination options and a simplified booking process for connecting flights.

“We are pleased to welcome Air Serbia as our newest interline partner,” said Weatherill. “WestJet and Air Serbia are making it easier for travellers to explore more of Canada with confidence and convenience. With a significant diaspora across Canada, we look forward to welcoming Serbs across our network via Toronto Pearson, helping more travellers reach the people and places that matter most.”

“When advisors succeed, we succeed”: Trevello CEO on Momentum & more

Trevello’s Momentum program aims to get more money into the pockets of the industry’s front-line heroes: travel advisors.

Momentum was also designed “to fix the thing advisors complain about most in the host agency space: complexity,” Trevello CEO Zeina Gedeon told Travelweek.

“Too many compensation plans read like a maze: multiple tiers, thresholds, supplier specific, fine print and a payout you can’t predict from one month to the next. Advisors are running real businesses, and they deserve to know exactly what they take home and exactly how to grow it,” said Gedeon.

“So we stripped it all away,” she added. “We wanted to create something simpler and more transparent. Advisors start at 85% commission and, once they earn $15,000 in paid commission, move to 100% commission across all suppliers for the remainder of the year. Momentum was never about creating another commission program.

It was about creating a more transparent and rewarding path for travel advisors. We believe advisors should have a clear understanding of what they earn, a meaningful opportunity to increase that earning potential, and the support they need to continue growing successful businesses.”

Gedeon added that 30% of Trevello’s advisors have reached the 100% commission level, and that number continues to grow each year. “What’s particularly encouraging is that many of our top-performing advisors achieve the threshold within the first month of the year. It demonstrates that the model is attainable for productive advisors and provides a meaningful incentive for growth. Momentum was never meant to be an exclusive club. It was designed to be attainable, and to reward producers when they hit it.”

Advisors need to qualify annually for Momentum. “Every January you start at 85%, and the moment you reach $15,000 in paid commission, you’re at 100% for the rest of the year on every supplier. No application, no review committee, no subjective evaluation. You earn it, you get it,” said Gedeon.

She added: “Momentum has become a very compelling proposition because it reflects what today’s independent advisors are looking for: transparency, simplicity and the opportunity to retain more of the hard work they do.”

Gedeon also shared details about Trevello’s support team. “As our advisor community has grown, our support team has grown right alongside it and by design, it grows faster. Over the last several years we’ve made significant, deliberate investments across advisor support, supplier relations, technology, accounting, training, marketing, and operations. We understood early that scale means nothing if service slips,” she said.

What makes Trevello’s support team great? “It’s the people,” said Gedeon. “Many of them have worked in travel themselves, so they understand the real pressures of running a travel business and serving demanding clients, they’re not reading from a script, they’ve lived it. They’re knowledgeable, responsive and relentless about finding solutions, and they build genuine relationships with our advisors.”

“A difficult decision but a necessary step”: Air Canada’s new commission structure

TORONTO — A travel agency owner is speaking out after he received notice from Air Canada about the airline’s new commission structure.

He says he got a notification from Air Canada saying the airline’s commission structure is changing July 1. And for travel advisors, it’s not for the better.

“In this context, Air Canada will adjust the commission rate applicable to eligible agency ticket sales in Canada, effective July 1, 2026.

“We are providing you with notice of this change today to enable you to plan and adapt accordingly. We recognize that this change will result in lower commission amounts than under current terms. This was a difficult decision but a necessary step to ensure Air Canada remains strong, competitive, and positioned to deliver value across the entire travel ecosystem, as we embark into our New Frontiers plan. By funding our future with new aircraft, new premium products, a strong loyalty program and new destinations, we will provide growth opportunities for our mutual customers.”

“As market conditions continue to evolve, we look forward to building a sustainable future with our travel agency partner.”

Etihad adds free medical travel insurance for guests flying to Abu Dhabi

ABU DHABI — Etihad Airways and the Department of Culture and Tourism (DCT) Abu Dhabi have partnered to offer complimentary medical travel insurance to eligible international visitors flying to or through Abu Dhabi on Etihad-operated flights.

The new initiative, available for travel between July and December 2026, provides up to 15 days of medical coverage in the United Arab Emirates and is designed to enhance the visitor

experience while supporting growing demand for the destination.

Under the program, insurance coverage is automatically included with eligible Etihad tickets and requires no separate application. The coverage is underwritten and administered by The National Insurance Company – Daman, part of PureHealth.

Eligible travellers include guests flying to Abu Dhabi on Etihadoperated services whose point of origin and point of sale are outside the UAE. Travellers taking advantage of Etihad’s complimentary Stopover Programme are also covered for the duration of their stay in Abu Dhabi. Terms and conditions apply.

Etihad said the new benefit removes one more barrier for travellers and adds value beyond the flight itself.

“Abu Dhabi is one of the most captivating destinations in the world, and our job is to make both getting here and being here as seamless as possible. Giving comprehensive medical insurance with every eligible Etihad ticket means our guests can focus entirely on experiencing the extraordinary Emirati hospitality Abu Dhabi has to offer. This is what it looks like when an airline and a destination truly invest in their visitors,” said Antonoaldo Neves, Chief Executive Officer, Etihad Airways.

Jamaica unveils ambitious ‘10x10x10’ tourism growth plan

NEW YORK — Jamaica is aiming to welcome 10 million visitors and generate US$10 billion in tourism earnings over the next decade under a new growth strategy unveiled by Minister of Tourism Edmund Bartlett.

Speaking at a reception honouring Jamaica travel specialists in New York City on June 1, Bartlett introduced the destination’s new “10x10x10” targets, citing strong visitor demand, expanding airlift and ongoing tourism investment as key drivers behind the ambitious goals.

“Jamaica continues to stand apart in a highly competitive global marketplace because our culture is not simply an addition to the visitor experience; it is the experience,” said Minister Bartlett. “The authenticity of our people, our music, our food, and our way of life continue to drive strong visitor loyalty and repeat business.”

GROWTH & RECOVERY

The minister noted that Jamaica’s tourism sector has moved firmly into a growth phase, with more than 1.5 million stopover and cruise visitors arriving between January

Bartlett said Jamaica continues to strengthen its tourism infrastructure despite recent weather-related challenges. Approximately 80% of the island’s room inventory is currently operational, with full recovery expected by early 2027.

Several major properties have already resumed operations, including Bahia Principe Escape Runaway Bay, Princess Senses The Mangrove and Princess Grand Jamaica.

and May 2026. During the same period, the destination generated approximately US$1.5 billion in foreign exchange earnings.

Airlift growth was also highlighted as a key contributor to the destination’s momentum. Bartlett pointed to

expanding service from Latin America through Wingo, continued support from Virgin Atlantic in the U.K. and new winter routes from Porter Airlines in Canada.

THE POWER OF TRAVEL ADVISORS

Travel advisors were also recognized for their role in the destination’s success. During the event, Bartlett revealed that the Jamaica Tourist Board is developing a new travel agent incentive program that will reward Jamaica specialists for their continued support. Details are expected to be announced in July.

“We can never underestimate the power of our travel specialists who champion Jamaica every day to global consumers. To achieve this new target, we will be leaning on them even more to attract these numbers to the destination,” said Donovan White, Director of Tourism.
