New to the travel industry? These are the questions every advisor should be asking their BDM BY CINDY SOSROUTOMO TORONTO — Every travel advisor remembers their first booking – and the moment they realized just how much there was to learn. From navigating supplier portals and understanding different brands to finding the right fit for every client, the learning curve can feel steep for those new to the industry. Fortunately, advisors don’t have to figure it all out on their own. One of the most valuable – and often underutilized – resources available is the supplier business development manager (BDM). More than just sales representatives, BDMs are educators, mentors and business partners whose job is to help travel advisors build confidence, grow sales and develop long-term success. Travelweek spoke with CJ Smith, Director of Sales, Canada for Unique Vacations (Canada) Inc., an
affiliate of Unique Travel Corp., the worldwide representatives of Sandals & Beaches Resorts, along with Karla Laurenzana, BDM – Southern Ontario, Hyatt Inclusive Collection, and Freddie Marsh, Business Development Manager, Western Canada, Hyatt Inclusive Collection, about the questions every new advisor should be asking.
on Sandals and Beaches Resorts and how can I get certified on your product?’”
“HOW CAN I BECOME AN EXPERT ON YOUR PRODUCT?
“It takes a much deeper dive into industry trends and niche markets and how an advisor can use those to their advantage to help close a Sandals or Beaches sale,” he says.
Before advisors can confidently sell a supplier’s products, they first need to understand them. For Smith, education should be every new advisor’s top priority. “There are so many questions that a new travel advisor should ask their BDM in order to help increase sales, but one of the most important is, ‘When is your next training
Smith recommends completing the online training available through the Sandals Travel Advisor Portal to become a Sandals Elite Advisor before progressing to the company’s Canadian-exclusive Masterclass training series.
Laurenzana agrees, noting that supplier education helps advisors better understand not only the product but which clients are best suited to each brand. “Hyatt Inclusive Collection offers a great variety of educational opportunities. We’ll direct advisors to our training programs, webinars and tools to help them feel confident recommending our resorts to their clients.” Marsh says training is one of the quickest ways for new advisors to build credibility with clients.

“The more knowledgeable an advisor becomes, the more confidence they will have when selling,” he says. “Hyatt Inclusive Collection offers webinars, learning platforms, certifications and FAM opportunities that can accelerate professional growth.”

“HOW CAN WE WORK TOGETHER TO GROW MY BUSINESS?” The strongest advisor-supplier relationships are collaborative, with both parties working toward the same goal. Smith believes every advisor should view their BDM as an extension of their business. “It is crucial that advisors who are new to the travel industry reach out and develop a strong partnership with their local BDM,” he says. “Great partnerships are built through collaboration, where shared goals, mutual trust and consistent action turn opportunity into lasting success.”
clients they work with, the better we can support them,” she says. “I invite advisors to never be afraid to reach out and ask questions or share their successes and challenges. The best relationships are built on communication and collaboration, so let’s work together.” Marsh agrees, noting that a BDM should be viewed as a local supplier partner. “We provide product training, sales support, marketing ideas and industry insights to help advisors grow their business. For new advisors, connecting with a BDM can accelerate learning, build confidence and create new sales opportunities.”
Because every advisor has different goals, Smith says BDMs can help develop personalized business plans based on individual niches, whether that’s destination weddings, family travel, golf groups or other specialties.
“WHAT SHOULD I BE SELLING NOW?”
Laurenzana echoes that sentiment.
Marsh recommends asking which products and destinations deserve the most attention.
“A BDM is much more than a sales rep – we are a partner in an advisor’s career and success,” she says. “Our role is to educate, support and provide resources to help advisors confidently sell our brands and grow their business.”
Market trends, promotions and consumer demand are constantly evolving, making BDMs valuable sources of real-time industry intelligence.
“A BDM has insight into current trends, promotions and emerging opportunities that can help advisors align their sales efforts with market demand,” he says.
She encourages new advisors to openly discuss their goals with their BDM.
Smith also stresses the importance of staying informed about supplier promotions.
“The more we know about their goals, business and the type of
“What are the current promotions in-market that I can share with my
clients, and how do I stay in the know about them?” is another essential question, he says. From Sandals’ weekly 7-7-7 offers to complimentary anniversary nights and other promotions, informed advisors are better positioned to close sales. “We suggest that advisors sign up for their local BDM’s monthly newsletters or join the private Facebook groups for Unique Vacations Canada in both English and French,” Smith says.
“HOW CAN I PROMOTE MY BUSINESS?” Product knowledge is only one piece of the puzzle. New advisors also need to build visibility and attract clients. Smith encourages advisors to ask their BDM about available marketing tools. “There are a number of proven tools that can help an advisor promote their services and gain awareness of their business,” he says. For storefront agencies, window scrims can help attract attention from passing traffic. Home-based advisors, meanwhile, may benefit from programs like Sandals’ vehicle wrap initiative. “There’s nothing more successful than having a Sandals-wrapped vehicle,” says Smith. “It’s literally a moving billboard promoting their business 365 days a year, 24/7.”

Aerial view of Tirana
Tirana, transformed: A recent visit to Albania’s newly dynamic capital BY TIM JOHNSON TIRANA — Landing in Albania’s capital and riding into the city centre, Tirana is unrecognizable from the place I visited more than a decade ago. In a very good way. “These buildings, all new,” my driver, Aldi, says, waving his hand to the incipient skyline ahead. Glassy, modern skyscrapers rise on the horizon, many of them still under construction. The transformation is almost unbelievable when I walk over to Skanderbeg Square, just a couple of blocks from my hotel. When I was here in 2014, the statue of the namesake national hero astride his horse was surrounded by dirt and shabby grass and a maze of streets and lots. Today, the traffic rerouted and the parking sent underground, the square, tiled in stone from all corners of the country, is a gathering place and the beating heart of the city.
I (literally) can’t quite trust my own eyes. So I ask a passerby, showing them a photo from that first visit. Can this possibly be the same place? “A lot has changed here,” he says, indicating not just the new structures, and the square itself, but also the little parks and food carts and other lovely features that have been installed around the edges. Busy – even on a weeknight – with young, smiling people. Few countries have undergone such dramatic changes in the last few years as Albania. Once a pariah state ruled by an unstable dictator and isolated from both the West and the Eastern Bloc, development here has been swift, and sudden. As beaches become more crowded and expensive in places like Croatia and Italy, sun-seekers are heading further down the coast. In just the last five or 10 years, restaurants and other tourist conveniences have started popping up everywhere, across the country.
Europeans have already started flocking here in big numbers – according to one report, tourism visits more than doubled between 2021 and 2025. But Albania is only just emerging as a destination for the North American market.
AIR TRANSAT’S NEW FLIGHTS That’s about to change. The first direct flight connecting Canada and Albania, a weekly, seasonal route on Air Transat, started operating this summer between Toronto and Tirana. Albania is a compact country with both mountains and the Adriatic and Ionian Seas. The capital is by far the largest city in this small nation of about 2.8 million people. Once tired and a little sad, my recent visit to Tirana revealed a newly optimistic and revitalized place, one surging into the future while still honouring its difficult past. “The city stands as one of the most dynamic examples of urban transformation in the Balkans,” says Armand Ferra, founder and CEO of

Fine Travel Albania DMC, a high-end agency that planned and carried out most parts of my trip. “Ultimately, Tirana is a city that cannot truly be described, it has to be experienced.” So, I do. On my first night in town, I just wander.
AL FRESCO DINING & UPSCALE SHOPS Spending some time on Skandebeg Square, I walk past the Khrushchevera National Theatre of Opera and Ballet, the National Library, plus the National Museum, adorned with a massive mosaic, covering 440 square metres. Completed in 1981, it is one of the last prominent and unapologetic representations of socialist realism in the city. “You can see all the different stages of Albanian history,” Edjon Maliqaj, a guide with Fine Travel, shares with me, later. From an ancient Illyrian warrior, to those who battled the Ottoman Empire, to communist partisans in the Second World War. It forms a sharp contrast to the lights of the newest buildings, coming up as a warm evening fades to inky night. The nearby Tirana Castle (formally the Fortress of Justinian) was, until recently, only a sixthcentury Byzantine ruin. Originally constructed to protect Adriatic trade routes – east meeting west, north intersecting with south – in 2018 builders redeveloped and opened the area as a modern bazaar. I make my way down the cobblestones of the serpentine Murat Toptani Street, the main, pedestrianized thoroughfare. Overhead, strings of white bulbs twinkle. To the left and right, upscale shops and restaurants and bars, bursts of laughter rising from al fresco tables packed with happylooking patrons.
A TRIP BACK IN TIME During my following three days in Tirana, I take a little time to learn about Albania’s darkest days. From 1944 until 1990, the country wasn’t just a communist state. Adhering to a strict Stalinist doctrine, most of that period was spent under the rule of a man named Enver Hoxha. The House of Leaves, a stately brick villa draped in ivy, tells the story of Hoxha’s iron fist. The building was once used by the country’s secret police to interrogate supposed state enemies and spy on both Albanians and visitors. Opening as a museum in 2017, it now, room-by-room, tells the story of how the regime used propaganda, surveillance and brute force to subjugate his nation. Hoxha saw threats everywhere, both within and without. He turned allies into opponents and pursued a policy of almost total isolation. And he was famously paranoid – something on full display at Bunk’Art 2, which I visit with my guide, Maliqaj. “The idea was that the government could hide out here, in case of attack,” he tells me. Hoxha built bunkers everywhere, including beneath the streets of the capital. Descending a series of steps, I explore the subterranean corridors and dozens of rooms. Many tell similar stories those I encountered at the House of Leaves. Perhaps the most interesting part: the passages connecting to government ministries, and the chambers that would have served as underground bedrooms and offices for those ministers.
“ONCE THIS WAS UGLY, NOW IT’S COOL” But that was the old Tirana. I emerge into the fresh air, and Maliqaj leads me to a neighbourhood that means a lot to him – the district where he grew up. An easy walk south of Skanderbeg Square, the streets here
are lined with brutalist Soviet-style apartment blocks. “Once this was ugly,” the guide tells me. “Now it’s cool.” And he’s right. The ground floor units have been converted to some of the trendiest galleries and boutiques and restaurants in town. Those same young, optimistic people I’ve been seeing all over Tirana pack these establishments as they chat over coffees and glasses of wine and steaming dishes. A tale of two cities. All in one place. Definitely worth the flight, from Toronto to Tirana, to witness it.
GETTING THERE Air Transat’s brand new seasonal service to the Albanian capital runs once a week. Flights aboard an A330-200 depart Pearson International Airport on Thursdays, and return on Fridays, until the beginning of October. It is the only nonstop connecting North America and Albania. Their Club Class service is worth the extra cost, providing larger, more comfortable seats and extra legroom, elevated meals, complimentary food and wine, and (on my flight) absolutely extraordinary service.
GETTING AROUND Fine Travel Albania unlocks the best of this Balkan country. A locally based DMC, they specialize in upscale tours and take care of all the details, from transportation to hotels and restaurants. Air Transat’s new nonstop, weekly service between Toronto and Tirana operates every Thursday until Oct. 8, 2026. It marks the first-ever nonstop air service between Canada and Albania.

Scilly Cay, Anguilla Valiant Lady, Virgin Voyages
CRUISE LINES Virgin Voyages has recorded the biggest single revenue day in its history, with Aug. 13 surpassing its previous record set during Black Friday 2025. More than half of the day’s revenue came from the cruise line’s newly announced Scandinavia and Baltics program, which will see Valiant Lady operate five itineraries from Amsterdam in summer 2028. Every available cabin for the Northern Europe season sold out shortly after bookings opened, nearly two years in advance. An 11-night Arctic Circle sailing has emerged as a particularly strong seller. Virgin Voyages says August booking pace was already 20% ahead of the previous year before Aug. 13 and climbed to more than 45% ahead by the end of the record-setting day.
DESTINATIONS Sargassum season along Mexico’s Caribbean coast could continue into early October, depending on winds, currents and tides, according to Quintana Roo’s environment minister. The state, home to Cancun, Tulum and the Riviera Maya, spends more than $2 billion annually managing the seaweed. So far in 2026, the three hardest-hit destinations have disposed of 105,000 metric tons,
already surpassing the 2025 full-year total of 92,783 tons. Authorities estimate this year’s total could reach 119,000 tons. Other affected destinations include Barbados, the Dominican Republic, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Anguilla and southeast Florida. Quintana Roo is also exploring ways to convert sargassum into biofuel. Anguilla is strengthening its focus on Canada following a 40% year-over-year increase in Canadian stayover arrivals during the first quarter of 2026. The Anguilla Tourist Board has appointed Toronto-based Jesson & Company Communications Inc. as its Canadian Public Relations, Sales & Marketing Agency of Record. Canada is now the destination’s second-largest source market. New air access is also coming, with BermudAir set to launch seasonal Saturday service from Toronto to Anguilla Tulum sculpture
via Providenciales beginning Dec. 19, 2026. Overall, Anguilla welcomed 90,017 visitors in Q1, its strongest first quarter in 34 years. The destination is also promoting its “Anguilla: Taste. Feel. Live.” campaign and XCAPE travel app. Europe accounted for one-third of global leisure travel spending in 2025, attracting $2 trillion, according to the World Travel & Tourism Council. Global leisure travel spending reached $6.15 trillion, up 3.5% year over year, with leisure accounting for 80.5% of total travel expenditure. Southern Europe remained a major growth driver, led by desvtinations including France, Spain, Italy and Türkiye. WTTC forecasts leisure spending in Europe will rise another 3.7% in 2026, ahead of the 3.1% global average. Italy is expected to post the strongest growth among the highlighted markets at 4.7%, followed by Spain at 4.3%, Türkiye at 4.1% and France at 2.6%.

Air Transat adds Kenya approval, Dubai codeshare via Turkish Airlines
Air Transat currently offers yearround service between Toronto and Istanbul, which launched in December 2025. The airline is also set to begin new nonstop yearround service between Montreal and Istanbul on Oct. 29.
MONTREAL — Air Transat is continuing to expand its codeshare reach with partner Turkish Airlines, adding Kenya to its list of approved markets and preparing to place its code on flights to Dubai.
From Istanbul, Turkish Airlines connects to more than 350 destinations in over 130 countries, including Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi.
The Canadian Transportation Agency has issued Air Transat a licence to operate scheduled international service to Kenya through codesharing.
The interline and codeshare agreements between Air Transat and Turkish Airlines came into effect in fall 2025.
THE LATEST APPROVALS BUILD ON AIR TRANSAT’S GROWING CONNECTIVITY VIA ISTANBUL
The approval follows a series of similar developments for the carrier. Air Transat recently received approval for codeshare service to Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Thailand, while its Dubai flights will operate via Turkish Airlines between Istanbul and Dubai. Airlines often apply to the CTA for licences to operate or codeshare on routes that may not launch for years, if at all, allowing them to keep future network options open.
EXPANDING REACH VIA ISTANBUL The latest approvals build on Air Transat’s growing connectivity through Turkish Airlines’ Istanbul hub.
DUBAI JOINS THE PICTURE For Dubai, Air Transat will codeshare with Turkish Airlines on the IstanbulDubai route, according to Aeroroutes. The development adds another major international market to Air Transat’s list of potential one-stop destinations available through the partnership. The Canadian government’s travel advice for the United Arab Emirates is currently at Orange Level, advising travellers to avoid non-essential travel after a brief return to Yellow Level earlier this summer.

Softvoyage updates REVNET shutdown plan following industry feedback MONTREAL — Softvoyage has revised its plans for the decommissioning of REVNET following feedback from travel industry stakeholders. The company had previously announced on July 15 that its travel booking platform would officially be decommissioned on Sept. 1, 2026. Softvoyage now says that the Option 10 will be deleted from REVNET on Oct. 1 and made available via TripBook. A new web interface will replace the REVNET Option 2 ‘ITC Packages’, providing direct access to tour operator product inventory. This will replicate current REVNET results. Once the new interface is completed in in production over the next few weeks, REVNET will then be decommissioned.
Transat seeks “solutions” as Q3 costs hit by extra $105 million from high jet fuel prices MONTREAL — Transat’s Q3 2026 costs are up by an extra $105 million year over year as a result of higher jet fuel prices, prompting the company to seek out “solutions” with the federal government. Transat also estimates the cumulative impact of higher fuel prices on its
costs at approximately $175 million at the end of the third quarter. While the price of oil has edged down from its spring highs, airlines are wary of lowering fares lest they set off a price war, driving down prices at a time when carriers are doing everything they can to recoup their jet fuel cost losses. IATA has said the jet fuel bill for the world’s carriers, amid oil supply and shipping constraints due to unpredictable access to the Strait of Hormuz, could be 40% higher in 2026 vs. 2025, from US$252 billion last year to $350 billion this year. In a statement Transat notes that according to recent industry assessments, including those by IATA, volatility in energy markets is expected to continue putting pressure on jet fuel costs across the industry in both the short and medium term. “The corporation’s ability to pass higher fuel costs on to customers has, to date, remained very limited. The company is actively engaged with the federal government to explore potential solutions in this regard,” said Transat. Last month Transat announced it had secured up to $150 million in federal aid to help offset the soaring price of jet fuel caused by the Middle East war. The financial relief came several weeks after Ottawa announced a loan lifeline available to airlines struggling to cope with sky-high oil prices and the slashed flight schedules and lower profit forecasts that followed. Air Canada suggested earlier in the summer it would not need to draw on the aid, while WestJet said it opposes the move because of its marketdistorting effects.

TTC Tour Brands reports bookings uptick, expands Trafalgar river cruise plans BY KATHRYN FOLLIOTT TORONTO — The travel industry has been through a storm of geopolitical headwinds. When a major player like TTC Tour Brands reports pickup for the end of this year and into the next, it’s a bellwether for good things to come. At The Travel Corporation’s Canadian HQ on Aug. 19, as top host agencies and other retail partners mingled with the sales team, TTC Tour Brands’ Jodine Clement, Director of Sales, Canada, told Travelweek that after a positive start to the year sales from this market are now tracking in similar fashion for fall 2026 and into 2027. “The Canadian market is strong,” said Clement. Across the board the travel industry saw booking hesitancy in Q2 that lingered into Q3. Travellers concerned
that military strikes in the Middle East could spark a larger conflict, not to mention economic belt-tightening, and worries about airports running out of jet fuel, led many vacationers to scale back their travel plans for the summer months. With September just days away, the industry is hoping to have turned this latest corner. “The year started off really well. And now we’re starting to see things pick up again for 2027,” said Clement. Along with the updates, the event also offered a chance to connect faceto-face with TTC Tour Brands’ sales team in Canada, including Clement along with Brenda Bradley, Sales Manager, Southwestern and Northern Ontario, Jenni Berg, Director, Strategic Accounts and Austin Fraser, BDM, GTA and eastern Ontario. The company maintains a staff of more than 180 here in Canada, including the call centre. Other BDMs in Canada serving this market are Michele Kempf Quebec for Ottawa and the Maritimes, Nicole Davey for B.C., Saskatchewan and Yukon, and Jordan Harris who looks after Alberta and Manitoba.
MAXIMIZING VISIBILITY FOR BRENDAN VACATIONS TTC Tour Brands’ long list of wellknown brands includes Trafalgar, Insight Vacations, Costsaver, Luxury Gold, Contiki and Brendan Vacations. This past spring TTC Tour Brands introduced a unified leadership model for the S&A division that brings African Travel, Brendan Vacations and Lion World Travel under a single executive structure. Brendan Vacations launched in Canada in 2022, and Whitney Ramirez, Senior Vice President, Sales for all Specialist & Adventure brands, told Travelweek she wants to maximize the visibility for both Brendan Vacations and African Travel in the Canadian market. “Anything in a kilt,” said Ramirez, talking about the Ireland and Scotland specialist, adding that she first worked at Brendan Vacations 27 years ago “and I’m thrilled to be back.” Ramirez told retailers: “Whenever you have clients interested in Ireland or Scotland, think Brendan. MORE RIVER CRUISE SHIPS FOR TRAFALGAR Trafalgar officially entered the river cruise market this past April, marking a major milestone for the brand.
Another summer of low water levels on Europe’s rivers have made 2026 challenging for all river cruise operators. Clement told Travelweek that Trafalgar has been navigating impasses with ship swaps with sister river cruise company Uniworld, with thankfully only minimal cancellations. “We haven’t had to do many motorcoach segments,” added Clement. The ship swaps have done the trick. Both the Trafalgar Verity and the Trafalgar Reverie were formerly Uniworld ships. “In 2027 we’ll welcome the Trafalgar Dreamer for sailings on the Seine,” said Clement. It’s also a former Uniworld vessel. But just wait: the year after that, Trafalgar will be take delivery of its own brand new ships. “We’ll have three new-builds, they’ll be a bit larger and we’ll be able to customize the new builds which is great.”

G Adventures launches new flexible booking options TORONTO — G Adventures is giving travellers more flexibility when booking their next trip with the launch of Stay Flexy Adventure Plans, a new three-tier program offering enhanced cancellation terms, Future Travel Credits and additional predeparture perks. The new Flexy, Flexier and Flexiest options are designed to reduce uncertainty around booking while giving travellers greater choice over what happens to their money if their plans change. For travel advisors, G Adventures says the plans provide another tool for converting clients who may be hesitant to commit to a trip. More than 900 flights were cancelled as WestJet reduced and then gradually restored its schedule. WestJet said it appreciates the patience and loyalty of guests affected by the disruption and remains focused on delivering safe and reliable service.
