EES is here to stay, ETIAS is on hold, and through it all Canadians are still clamouring for Europe, say tour ops BY KATHRYN FOLLIOTT TORONTO — Talk about your onagain, off-again relationships. Europe’s Entry/Exit System (EES), with its required fingerprints and facial scans, created havoc and a slew of negative headlines – due to hours-long lineups – for travellers at Europe’s airports earlier this summer. As it turns out, airports got the green light to ‘pause’ EES processing during especially busy times in the summer tourism siege. But that ‘pause’ capability is expected to end as early as next month. Meanwhile the EES’s partner system, the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS), impacting a long list of Europe-bound travellers, including Canadians, was all set for launch for fall 2026 – and now it’s not. The official site notes the ETIAS is not currently in operation and no applications for travel authorizations are being collected at this point. No doubt the EES headaches were a big contributing factor. With the ETIAS’ permit and fee requirements, no one who sells Europe travel is shedding tears about this ‘off-again’ turn of events. But what’s the advice for clients with travel booked to Europe for the remainder of the summer and into the popular fall season, especially when airports can no longer suspend EES processing, and the lineups and
delays come back? What are the lessons learned? Most importantly, did the early EES chaos deter Canadian travellers from visiting one of their favourite destinations this summer? Not so you’d notice. There’s just no stopping Canada’s love of Europe – despite the long EES lines, the heatwaves, even worries about low jet fuel supplies (which thankfully haven’t come to pass). “Canadian demand for Europe remains strong, and fall is especially busy for us,” says Talia May, Director, Marketing & Operations for Gateways International. “From our perspective, EES is affecting how clients fly and connect, rather than whether they travel. We are recommending longer connections and more caution especially with separate tickets.” Europe travel for Exoticca is similarly booming, says Mike Quinto, VP, North
America. Travellers have seen the headlines. “They’re certainly aware of the EES rollout,” he says. “Because of the tariff war with the U.S. and the huge downturn of Canadian tourists booking U.S. holidays, Europe, Asia, Latin America and Africa have seen a huge uptick in sales in the last 12 months.” Canadian arrivals to Europe in 2026 are forecast at just shy of 8 million, according to Sandra Bailey Moffatt, who is the chair of ETC’s Canada chapter as well as Country Manager - Canada for Tourism Ireland. The official estimate is 7,986,639. “Almost all reporting destinations have seen more visits and/or nights spent by Canadians so far this year compared with the same period in 2025,” she tells Travelweek. We asked Moffatt for her take on the EES rollout. She’s diplomatic. “We hope that the system is being thoroughly tested and used over the

summer, while some derogations are still in place, and that it will be in full operation in the fall. We would of course like the traveller experience to be as seamless as possible. But safety matters too, both for European destinations and for their visitors.” May says there has been exasperation with the EU’s rollout of EES, “and that frustration is shared across the industry. The potential for delays was widely anticipated, particularly during the busy summer and early fall period. We would have liked to see greater flexibility and stronger contingency planning to help airports manage severe congestion.” Firdosh Bulsara, VP, MyEscapades, adds that there’s “a great amount of noise and greater number of warnings from ‘experts’, that the system requires immediate overhaul or it’ll be doomed. I have to believe the frustration is more compounded trying to have the client accept the fact that they have to go through with it … whether they like it or not.” Across the board, the advice for clients is this: anticipate potential delays, and plan for them. “Travellers who know they may encounter longer processing times on arrival are much less likely to be frustrated. You will get through, just be patient,” says Quinto. “I’d also encourage advisors to recommend longer layover times. Sometimes there will be a 2-hour layover option, and a 3.5-hour layover option, and I know everyone just wants to get there, or get home, but
always go with the safe bet and the longer layover time.” May advises 3.5 hours, or even 4 hours. “The old 2-hour rule may not be enough,” she adds. Managing expectations is also important. And VIP airport services can be helpful for some travellers, “although they can be expensive and do not always guarantee faster immigration processing. At participating airports, travellers may also be able to submit some of their information in advance through the official Travel to Europe app.” The app is a free pre-registration tool created by the EU for non-EU travellers subject to EES. Moffatt notes the app is already in use in Sweden and Portugal, with more countries planning to adopt it soon. Once a traveller has gone through EES processing, their biometrics stay in the system for 3 years. We asked Moffatt if that means return visitors can anticipate faster processing times on their next visit. “Having biometrics on the system will naturally speed up the process, however EES is part of the overall passport check,” she said. Travellers who have dual citizenship (i.e.a Canadian passport and an EU passport), with the required validity for their EU passport, can skip the EES process, notes Bulsara. The official EU portal for all practical info on EES is https://traveleurope.europa.eu/ees.
Airports hit by the worst EES lineups and delays over the summer include gateways in Portugal (Lisbon), Italy (Milan and Verona) and Spain (Madrid, Alicante, Malaga, Palma de Mallorca, Tenerife South and Lanzarote) as well as Amsterdam Schiphol. “Lisbon was already challenging before EES, and the additional processing appears to be compounding the problem,” says May. “We have also heard of difficulties at major hubs such as Paris and Frankfurt, particularly for passengers trying to make connecting flights. The biggest concern is the inconsistency. Some travellers pass through quickly, while others experience significant delays.” This week the Canadian government reverted to its open-ended advice for the ETIAS for more than two dozen of its European country listings at Travel.gc.ca, noting that ETIAS applications are not yet open, and that travellers should apply only through the official EU website once the system is launched. Given the lessons learned from EES, we asked Moffatt what advice she would offer to the authorities in charge of rolling out ETIAS – whenever that day comes. “What we can say from a tourism perspective is that clear, early and consistent communication towards travellers and the travel trade is what helps the industry prepare and manage expectations.”

Ship review: Explora III sets a superb standard for a sumptuous lifestyle at sea BY TOBY SALTZMAN ONBOARD EXPLORA III — Reimagined to up the luxury quotient of Explora Journeys’ Explora I and II, Explora III delivers a faultless cruising lifestyle, with accommodations, cuisine and amenities to satisfy discriminating guests. No wonder. As described by Explora Journeys’ President, Anna Nash at the ship’s christening ceremony in Barcelona, Explora III was built on the experience and client feedback of her sister ships, while incorporating advanced environmental technologies as the brand’s first LNG-powered vessel. Upon boarding Explora III for the 4-night preview journey out of Rome
(Civitavecchia), I was first struck by the ship’s easy elegance. From The lofty Lobby Bar with its cascading chandelier to inviting public lounges, restaurants and suites, the design is cleverly conceived to create a serene residential environment accented by exuberant sparks of glittering lights and colourful art. Third in the fleet of six ships scheduled for service by 2028, Explora III is 19.2 metres (63 feet) longer than Explora I and II, increasing public space by 19.5 square metres (64 sq. ft.). Explora III features 461 all oceanfront suites, penthouses and residences, including two Owner’s Residences at 315 square metres

My Premier Penthouse suite was exceedingly comfortable with its separate bedroom and living room – featuring a sectional sofa, coffee table and dining table with four chairs – that opens to a balcony with a chaise lounge, table and two chairs. The ample space includes a powder room with a Dyson hairdryer, clothes steamer and Technogym yoga mat. Similar suite bathrooms have heated floors and include a shower stall or combo bathtub-with-shower. Explora III has plenty of places to splash and relax, with five swimming pools, outdoor cabanas and shaded lounges. The expanded Conservatory Pool has a retractable roof for allseason swimming. The Ocean Wellness Centre clusters the spa and fitness facilities to create a sanctuary at sea for those seeking indulgent relaxation, rejuvenating therapy or energizing activity. The vast indoor gym, featuring Technogym Sandstone and Reform Pilates equipment, is complimented outdoors by Technogym cycles, a running track, and padel court that was busy with pickleball players. I loved the spa, starting with my zeninducing zone in the Sava Sound Pod followed by a muscle-kneading massage, and the invigorating circuit through the steamy Finnish sauna, chilly Himalayan salt cave and

Other Explora III enhancements include the redesigned Crema Café, a fave spot for espressos and snacks, and the new outside cigar patio at the Malt Whisky Bar. Explora III guests can expect gastronomic excellence in each of its seven distinct dining venues. Besides dining at the prized Anthology on chef Franck Garanger’s sevencourse feast paired with wines, or Japanese Sakura where starters include Wagyu beef tataki, or Marble & Co steakhouse where palates are stunned by the appetizer of fingerling potatoes capped with Calvisius Oscietra caviar and gold leaf garnish, guests can always eat at Emporium Marketplace where abundant choices include a carving station, pastas and foods prepared à la minute including grilled lobster, salmon and tuna. SUMMER DEMAND
AIRFARES
AIRLINE EXPANSION
On July 23 the skies saw the highest one-day total of global commercial flights ever: 153,359 commercial flights, according to Flightradar24. Concerns about Europe’s airports running out of jet fuel, airspace worries amid the Middle East tensions and other what-ifs haven’t come to pass, and that travel is showing its resilience. Strong summer travel demand has been fuelled by advance bookings before the doom-and-gloom headlines, and not a few last-minute getaway requests. Flightradar24 noted that Canadian commercial flights have been ticking higher too, up 16% from April 1 - July 23.
Airlines are reporting resilient travel demand heading into the peak travel season despite higher fares, greater global conflict, and Canadians’ shunning of the U.S. – and that means higher ticket prices likely won’t come down until early autumn, according to the latest report from Signal49, the re-branded name for the Conference Board of Canada. If the trade war with the U.S. sees a resolution in 2027 – admittedly, that’s a big if – the move forward would spur economic recovery, boosting tourism demand and industry revenues. The latest report is ‘Industry Lens – Air Transportation’, is available from Signal49 for a fee.
Air India is expanding its Canadian network for winter 2026-27 with the launch of a new seasonal nonstop route between Toronto and Mumbai. The new service will operate three times weekly from Oct. 25, 2026 through March 26, 2027, making Air India the only airline offering nonstop flights between the two cities during the winter season. The airline has also begun operating its new B7879 Dreamliner on flights between Toronto and Delhi. By January 2027, all Air India flights operating from Toronto will feature either the new B787-9 or upgraded B777-300ER aircraft.
SARGASSUM STRATEGY Mexico is putting US$115 million into a plan to rid its Caribbean shores of the massive mats of free-floating brown algae known as sargassum. There’s an immediate $44 million to scale collection capacity to 1,870 tons daily. The second phase, in 2027, will invest the rest of the funds into expanding offshore capture networks with large open-water vessels. Mexico’s ultimate goal: daily removal capacity for up to 4,000 tons. In Quintana Roo, home to Cancun, Tulum and the Riviera Maya, dealing with sargassum costs upwards of $2 billion annually.

The newly expanded Canada-Nigeria Air Transport Agreement will strengthen our economic ties, support tourism and trade, and making it easier for people and businesses in both countries to connect.” The expanded agreement includes the right for Canada and Nigeria to designate multiple airlines to operate scheduled air services between the two countries, with a capacity allowance of 14 weekly passenger flights and 10 weekly all-cargo flights for the airlines of each country. Air Canada said details including schedules and aircraft will be announced in due course, and noted that the new service remains subject to receipt of government approval and completion of applicable processes to operate in Nigeria.

Canada drives record Cayman Islands tourism growth in first half of 2026 GRAND CAYMAN — The Cayman Islands welcomed a record number of Canadian visitors during the first half of 2026, with Canada emerging as the destination’s fastest-growing source market in June. Canadian arrivals were up 44.1% YOY, marking the strongest June on record for the market. For the first six months of the year, arrivals from Canada climbed to a record 26,674, an increase of 48.9% year over year. Canada now accounts for 9.2% of all stayover visitors to the destination, up from 6.9% during the same period last year. Recognizing Canada’s continued momentum, the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism said it is placing an even greater strategic focus on the market as it builds on several years of recordbreaking growth. “Eight consecutive months of stayover growth reflects the disciplined execution of a clear strategy – diversifying our source markets, securing, and sustaining airlift, deepening our travel trade relationships, and keeping the Cayman Islands visible in the markets that matter most,” said Rosa Harris, Director of Tourism. “As we move through the summer months, the Department remains focused on strengthening airlift, deepening our travel trade partnerships in our growing markets like Canada, the UK, Ireland and Europe, and continuing to position the Cayman Islands as a preferred year-round destination.”

Win a spot on a Nevada FAM with Travel Nevada’s Specialist Challenge TORONTO — Travel Nevada has launched a new Specialist Challenge for the Canadian travel trade that includes a spot on a Nevada FAM. Designed to help travel professionals become more confident selling the destination, the Nevada Specialist Challenge invites non-specialist travel advisors and front-line staff to complete two simple steps for a chance to win one of eight Nevada self-drive FAM trips.
Existing Nevada Specialists can apply to become a hosted itinerary leader by completing the Reno Tahoe Certified Travel Advisor course and submitting the official host application form by Sept. 30. According to Travel Nevada, the initiative comes as destination expertise becomes increasingly valuable for travel advisors looking to differentiate themselves and better serve clients. “Now is a great time for Canadian travel advisors and front-line staff to upskill on Nevada,” said Corey Marshall, Account Director, Canada for Travel Nevada.
The eight prize experiences are designed to highlight the breadth of Nevada’s tourism offerings, showcasing destinations including Las Vegas and Reno, along with scenic road trips, outdoor landscapes and regional experiences beyond the state’s best-known gateways. while delivering experiences that simply cannot be replicated on land,” said Gregg Marston, CEO, Transcend Cruises. The staterooms can be converted into 30 two-room suites, giving event organizers maximum flexibility when
TRANSCEND PLANS TO OPERATE A FLEET OF UP TO 12 RIVER CRUISE SHIPS PURPOSE-BUILT FOR CHARTERS
MS Connect is the world’s first river cruise ship developed exclusively for the charter and group market. “With MS Connect, we are completely redefining river cruising for groups. Every detail of this ship has been purpose-built for meetings, incentives, conferences and exclusive events. Our goal was to create a flexible, premium and sustainable platform that meets the needs of today’s event organizers
designing their programs. MS Connect also features five event spaces suitable for large conferences, smaller meetings, workshops and networking events, plus the latest AV technology, reliable high-speed connectivity and extensive digital branding capabilities. The ship is also setting new standards in sustainability, says the company. MS Connect was developed using a circular design approach
and incorporates the latest lowemission technology available on Europe’s waterways. Electric last-mile maneuvering, peak-power battery systems in place of conventional generators, and optimized fuel and water storage systems significantly reduce fuel consumption and emissions. The vessel’s reduced draft also provides greater operational flexibility, including during periods of low water. The culinary experience includes a range of options, including fine dining, family-style service or regional culinary concepts. F&B and service can be tailored to the requirements of each group. There’s also a 240-square-metre wellness and fitness area, which Transcend says is one of the largest of its kind on any European river cruise ship. By 2028 Transcend’s fleet is expected to grow to four vessels. In addition to MS Connect, three more ships – MS Evolve, MS Create and MS Engage – will join the European market. In the long term, the company plans to operate a fleet of up to 12 river cruise ships purpose-built for the charter market. Like MS Connect, they will sail on Europe’s major waterways, including the Rhine, Danube, Moselle, Main, Rhine-Main-Danube Canal, and Dutch and Belgian waterways.

TIME Canada now live ahead of Sept. 23 event in Toronto TORONTO — A not-for-profit mentoring program that’s all about developing and retaining the next generation of travel, tourism, hospitality, cruise and aviation professionals, has launched in Canada. TIME Canada (Travel Industry Mentor Experience) is the latest international chapter for the industry-led initiative with a proven record across Australia and New Zealand. The program’s site is now live at travelindustrymentor.ca. Penny Spencer, the travel entrepreneur and advocate who founded TIME in Australia in 2009, and who is also chair and founder of TIME Canada (and the founder and managing director of Spencer Travel), says launching TIME in Canada “is both an honour and an exciting new chapter.” Over the course of 15 years, and via 63 cohorts, TIME has connected hundreds of emerging professionals with experienced industry mentors through a structured, one-on-one mentoring program. TIME graduates are now leading travel businesses, shaping industry policy, and giving back as mentors too, says Spencer. TIME Canada brings this model to one of the world’s most vibrant travel markets — at a moment when the industry needs it most, she adds. “Watching TIME grow from one idea into a movement has been one of the greatest privileges of my career,” says Spencer. “I can’t wait to see a community built on generosity, connection, and mentorship come to
life, creating opportunities, lifelong relationships, and inspiring the next generation of travel professionals.” TIME Canada was recently featured on the Travel Trends Podcast with host Dan Christian. The episode, Company Spotlight: TIME Comes to Canada: Building the Next Generation of Travel Leaders, is now available to stream for an in-depth look at what the TIME program offers Canadian industry professionals, as well as the program’s origins and impact. Listeners will also hear about what participation as a mentor, mentee or partner looks like in practice. TIME Canada is also getting ready for its inaugural launch event on Sept. 23 in Toronto, welcoming the program’s first Canadian cohort of mentees alongside industry partners, mentors, and supporters. Spencer will keynote the Toronto event, travelling from Sydney for the occasion. Perspectives from
TIME graduates in Australia and New Zealand — living proof of what structured mentorship can do for a career and for an industry – will be front and centre. The launch event is by invitation, and Spencer says industry professionals interested in attending or learning more about TIME Canada are encouraged to reach out directly. TIME Canada’s site is travelindustrymentor.ca, or email time@travelindustrymentor.ca. Edith Beaudoin, Country Program Manager, TIME Canada, says: “There is something truly special and exciting about building this from the ground up. The Canadian travel industry is full of talented, generous people who want to give back, and emerging professionals who are hungry for connection and guidance. TIME Canada is the bridge between those two groups, and I can’t wait to meet this first cohort and see what they go on to achieve.”

$2.5 billion minority investment in Aeroplan, led by Blackstone & La Caisse, says Air Canada MONTREAL — Air Canada has announced that funds managed by Blackstone and La Caisse, together with other leading Canadian institutions, are making a $2.5 billion minority equity investment in Aeroplan Inc. In exchange the investor group acquires a 25% non-controlling equity interest in Aeroplan, valuing the program at $10 billion. Air Canada will maintain full operational control of Aeroplan and a controlling ownership interest after the minority investment. Air Canada says that proceeds from the investment will strengthen Air Canada’s balance sheet, going towards the repayment of Air Canada’s upcoming US$1.2 billion (Cdn$1.7 billion) bond maturity. “This investment highlights Aeroplan as a differentiated loyalty platform and showcases the exceptional value created since its acquisition. The transaction strengthens Air Canada’s financial position by unlocking value from Aeroplan while retaining full operational control. It provides additional financial flexibility, and supports our pursuit of an investment grade rating, as we execute our longterm strategic plan, for the benefit of our customers, employees and investors,” said Air Canada’s EVP and Chief Financial Officer, John Di Bert. Craig Landry, EVP & Chief Innovation Officer at Air Canada, and President
of Aeroplan, added that “Air Canada has established Aeroplan as one of Canada’s leading loyalty programs, with strategic partnerships across travel, financial, and commercial sectors. We are pleased to welcome Blackstone, La Caisse and other leading Canadian institutions as minority investors in Aeroplan as we continue to strengthen and expand Aeroplan’s global appeal.” Landry underscored that the new partnership sees Air Canada retain full control of the program. The news came as Air Canada released its Q2 2026 results. The airline reported a net loss of $178 million for Q2. Operating revenues for Q2 were up 11% year over year, supported by strong demand across the airline’s network, including continued strength in premium and corporate travel. Revenue hit $6.3 billion, up from $5.6 billion in Q2 2025. “Looking ahead, we are reinstating and updating full-year 2026 guidance, supported by resilient demand for premium and corporate travel, our fare actions to mitigate fuel-price volatility and our disciplined cost management. Reflecting the progress we have made in strengthening our financial position, we believe an investment grade rating is achievable in the mid-term. Beyond 2026, with Anko van der Werff announced as my successor, I am confident Air Canada has leadership continuity, a clear strategy and the financial strength to continue driving its long-term objectives and create significant sustainable value for all stakeholders,” said Air Canada’s President and CEO, Michael Rousseau.
