We all snuck into 2021 on high alert, like a parent trying to quietly creep into the room to check on their sleeping child without waking them.

There have been so many travel improvements and adaptations, such as lifting travel bans or affording people the option to travel virtually. Though smiling faces are hard to see behind a mask, you can rest assured that every town in this beautiful spring issue is ready and awaiting your arrival with a grin.

I am in the midst of planning my return trip to Puerto Rico, along with a natural springs vacation. I love smelling the air of new places. I love trying the different foods and finding the local hidden gems that not every visitor gets to experience.

We’ve strived to bring you exactly that within this issue. You’ll discover quaint towns, wide open spaces, local appeal, history, and so much more.

Seek new places virtually, seek them by car or by plane, seek them in whatever way makes you comfortable – but don’t ever stop exploring.

A: You can travel anywhere! Just be sure to look up any restrictions or requirements. Some places outside of the United States may require a negative COVID test upon entry into their area, but other than that, there are no regulations. Just be sure to sanitize often and wear a mask!

Q: Are Spring Break events happening like usual?

A: Yes and no. It really depends on where you’re planning to visit. Some states are still practicing social distancing vigorously, and because of that, certain events for the season have been canceled or postponed. However, theme parks, beaches, and even some festivals are still in full swing, so just be sure to do your research for the most accurate information. There are plenty of concerts and music festivals that have been confirmed across the country, from Chicago to California. The Hangout Fest in Gulf Shores, Alabama is a good one for big names in music. There are also food festivals, such as the Strawberry Festival in Plant City, Florida, and themed events like state Renaissance Fairs that have all been confirmed for the 2021 season.

Q: How do I stay safe while traveling by car?

Q: Are airlines and car rentals available and safe?

A: Road trips are huge this year, because of the personal space it affords each individual family, along with drivethrough destinations that practice social distancing naturally. Traveling by car is a safe way to keep your family all in one spot. Just be sure to wash your hands thoroughly when getting in and out of the car at rest stops, restaurants, hotels, or gas stations. Make sure your vehicle has a full-service check before heading out, especially if you are taking a longer road trip. Road trips are not only safe, they’re fun! The nostalgia of piling in the car as kids and galivanting off to a destination for Spring Break is one of our fondest memories. Now is certainly a great time to remake those precious moments with our loved ones today. .

A: They are available, and they are as safe as can be! Airlines and rental companies are making sure that each flight/vehicle is sanitized before new passengers arrive. When booking a flight or a rental car, or both, it is always a good idea to carry sanitizing wipes with you so that you can wipe down surfaces as needed. Rental companies will even offer a fullservice wash before you get into the vehicle, along with safety and sanitization tips. Airlines are more than happy to accommodate travelers, and their mask policy is very firm, so you can rest assured that your flight will be exceptional.

Q: Are children still getting a Spring Break vacation even if they’re in virtual school?

A: The answer in short is yes. Even though some kids are not back in the classrooms, they are still afforded their normal breaks from class. If your child, or children in your family, are still taking virtual classes, this would be a great time to get them out of the house – it is no surprise that kids are bored at home and ready to be back in school. Some states have allowed children to fully return to school with safety protocol in mind, and Spring Break vacations will still be happening for them as well. .

Q: Do I need to wear a mask still?

A: Yes. Masks are required to enter most places of business. All transportation services, such as airlines, trains, and taxis, still require the use of a mask. It is definitely better to be safe than sorry in this case. Many companies have come out with fashionable, functional masks that aren’t uncomfortable to wear for long periods of time.

And if you forget a mask, most places do have medical-grade masks to hand out.

One of Josh’s favorite pieces of advice for being mindful in nature is getting guests to slow down. “I like to set an uncomfortably slow pace,” explains Heath. “People are so used to rushing from point A to point B that they don’t have the capability of truly slowing down. I like to remind guests of the famous quote by Lao Tzu, “Nature doesn’t hurry, yet everything is accomplished.”

Back in 2000, Australian sustainability professor Glenn Albrecht coined a term psychoterratica- the trauma caused by distance from nature. There has been study after study and book after book written outlining the powerful effects of not having a steady dose of nature, such as “Nature Fix”

by Florence Williams, “The Last Child in the Woods” by Richard Louv, and “Your Brain on Nature” by Eva Selhub.

With a hefty goal of helping guests to fully understand and embrace the importance of nature in their lives (for their mind, body, and soul), the true sign of success would be that guests continue their nature practice long after they leave the guiding hands at The Lodge at Woodloch.

The garden patio has been expanded and food preparation area enhanced. The intimate Chef-led tasting dinners will occur a few times per week and will take place right on the deck in the center of Blackmore garden. The two-hour tasting will be led

by Chef Josh (or one of his talented Chefs) as he selects and prepares the harvest focus for the dinner. All dinners are paired with a wine selected by Sommelier, Leslie Britt. Standing more than a mile above sea level, Grandfather Mountain has been celebrating and sharing the wonders of the natural world since 1952.

Summer is one of the most ideal times to visit, as temperatures at the world-famous Mile High Swinging Bridge are typically at least 20 degrees cooler than in the flatlands.

The suspension footbridge spans a lofty 80-foot chasm at more than one mile in elevation, offering panoramic views of the Western North Carolina High Country, as well as a view of the Charlotte, N.C., skyline — some 80 miles away — on a clear day.

The nonprofit nature park also features access to 12 miles of hiking trails, some of which venture into the neighboring Grandfather Mountain State Park, as well as a nature museum, restaurant, picnic sites, eco-friendly fudge shop, special events and more.

A visit to the park’s environmental wildlife habitats lets guests come face to face with black bears, cougars, river otters, bald eagles and elk. Plus, the mountain’s staff of naturalists, rangers and keepers hosts a variety of interactive programs, such as animal encounters, interpretive talks and hikes, a Junior Ranger program for kids and more — all included with admission.

Grandfather Mountain is located at 2050 Blowing Rock Highway (U.S. 221) in Linville, N.C., 70 miles from Asheville, N.C., and just one mile from milepost 305 on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The park is open year-round, weather permitting, with the exception of Thanksgiving and Christmas.

The Gorge Zipline is the steepest and fastest zipline experience in the country. The course begins on the edge of the gorge and then descends more than 1,100 feet. The Riveter opened in early 2020 as North Carolina’s first indoor climbing gym and bike park. A dedicated kids’ climbing cove has multiple rope stations and an awesome slide.

The bike park is divided into two parts. Under the canopy, four separate lines provide terrain for all skill levels.

Experienced riders practice jumps and drops, while younger riders hit the flowy pump track. Outdoors, four different lines vary in difficulty from green to double black.

The Riveter also includes a yoga studio, fitness studio, meeting space, libation station and retail shop. Visitors may bring their own climbing and biking equipment or rent it on-site.

Race downhill Ride Kanuga is Hendersonville’s newest outdoor adventure attraction. Founded by world-champion downhill racer Neko Mulally, the mountain bike park features 12 downhill-specific trails suitable for all ability levels.

The park’s goal is to make mountain biking accessible and fun for people of all ages and ability levels. Trails include a mix of natural features and jump lines and are specifically designed to help riders build new skills.

Located at Kanuga Camps & Conference Center, the bike park is the latest outdoor offering for visitors to the retreat center, which is located on 1,400 acres with a lake and miles of hiking trails. Trailside cabins and campsites are available as ride-in/ride-out. Riders may also opt to stay in one of Kanuga’s historic guest cottages or the inn, a onemile ride from the bike trail entrance.

Grab an ax What do you get when you combine bowling and darts?

The answer is ax throwing, and it’s a new, fun ways to relieve stress and unwind with friends or family. Hendersonville natives opened Timber Axe Throwing, a hip yet low-key spot, in Hendersonville in 2019.

The sport of ax throwing requires no prior experience.

Friendly, well-trained staff members provide demonstrations and teach proper technique. The goal is to hit the bull’s-eye at the other end of the throwing lane, but scoring is optional. The main idea is to enjoy your time.

The facility includes a lounge area and outside deck with fire pit. Craft beer and cider from local producers complete the experience.

ROASTED LE MON CHICKE N & PEAS This chicken dish is fresh, light, and filling! Roast your chicken with garlic slices, lemon slices, and your usual herb mixture, along with a sprig of rosemary.

Asparagus is a favorite, especially when it is in season during spring. This veggie holds great flavor on its own, but can also be easily spruced up to satisfy even the most selective tastebuds. For spring season-themed preparation, sauté the spears over medium heat with a light drizzle of olive oil, some salt and pepper, and a squeeze of fresh lemon juice. The trick is to wait until they are bright green and then remove them from the heat and just let them sit in the warm pan until you’re ready to plate.

This allows for a nice crunch and keeps the asparagus from being overcooked and getting stringy.

Light, sweet, and classy. Those are the words that come to mind while sipping on this lovely springtime drink.
