Hiking Expect many options for walking, running, hiking, and backpacking in this diverse landscape. From easy close to town trails, to long rugged mountainous trails or smooth uninhabited roads.
Visit Steens Mountain in the winter or spring for snowshoeing, cross-country and backcountry skiing. Visitors may check out a gate key from the Burns District BLM for access to the snowline on the north loop. The road is marked with snow poles up to Kiger

Snow is possible any time of year. Weather conditions can vary widely by elevation. The Steens Loop Tour Route can open for the season as early as mid-June and remain open through October, but this depends on yearly snow accumulation and road conditions. Fishing There are many streams, creeks, rivers and lakes that make for good fishing if the year is wet. Expect the selection of fish to be mostly trout species, though there are crappie and largemouth bass in some locations. Be sure to tie down and secure all possessions as high winds are common. Watch for storms. Precipitation can make the playa surface undrivable.
