Oh, the holidays ‌ A magical time of year when, somehow, the child in so many of us bubbles to the surface with delight. Events galore promote that magic.

regular clothing, and glasses that are definitely more contemporary than Saint Nick’s, he exudes an inherent Santa persona all year long. “The children know,” he says. “They’re always the ones to spot Santa first.” But when he dons the Santa uniform, it becomes especially moving. “Santa has only one job – to bring joy and happiness,” he says. “That’s it. Anybody who puts on the suit has a responsibility of doing that. It’s something I take very seriously. You don’t play Santa; you portray an image.” Etter will be Santa – in full Santa attire – at several events this season, including some evenings at Newfields in Indianapolis where

It happens all year long. He can be dressed in a sport shirt and shorts, and walking the aisles in a grocery store, when a passing child will stop and stare with that unmistakable expression of recognition. Looking back at the child, the man smiles slightly, winks, and puts his finger to his pursed lips in a silent “shhh.” The beard undoubtedly has a great deal to do with this scenario, but not every bearded man is like Tim Etter. Not every bearded man is Santa. But Etter is, for the 34th year. He’s really into the role during the holidays, but the Santa demeanor never seems to leave him. Despite a beard that isn’t snow-white (except when he bleaches it in late fall),

he’ll wander around, visiting with guests. Sometimes he’s already at his Santa site when visitors get there. But sometimes he arrives in a bright red SUV with Polar Express in big letters on the side of the auto. His story is that the reindeer fly only on Christmas Eve, so Santa travels by other means. Usually it’s a train which carries the SUV in a special train car so he can use it where there are no tracks. By the time Santa appears, holiday events are in full swing. But we’re already seeing strong indications of the season: store decorations,
gift suggestions, craft bazaars. For many, Thanksgiving signals the “official” beginning of the holiday season. Some begin the day with a run/walk like the Turkey Trot in Indy’s Crown Hill Cemetery, the Turkey Trot in Tell City or the Bolt for the Heart in Carmel. Turkey, stuffing, pumpkin pie and football with extended family follow, and now there’s Thanksgiving evening shopping. At Suncatchers in Whiting, Pajama-Shop-O-Rama begins at 8 p.m. Thanksgiving night. “People come in their pajamas,” owner Edie Rauner says. “They’re in such a great

Christmas at the (Indianapolis) Zoo begins Nov. 23 and runs through Dec. 30. It was the first zoo in the nation to offer a light display, in 1967. The animals themselves provide an uncommon experience. “We have a lot of animals that enjoy the cooler temperatures,” says Carla Knapp, the zoo’s public relations specialist, adding that they’re especially active during the evenings. They include tigers, brown bears, red pandas, penguins and flamingos. Throughout the state are thousands of Christmas light displays, from modest heartwarming house lights to bigger home displays ala Clark Griswold, to business and municipal lights. Among them: Wellfield Botanic Gardens in Elkhart, Christmas in the Park in Terre Haute, and Winterland Holiday Light Show in Ellis Park in Danville. A Merry Prairie Holiday Festival at Conner Prairie blends the time-honored Reynolds Farm Equipment Christmas Lights, which were at Indiana 37 and 126th Street in Fishers every year since 1991, with Conner Prairie experiences Nov. 29-Dec. 29. Visit Clowes Commons, North Pole Village (with a dry snow tubing hill), Blitzen’s Bandstand, Winterland Wagon Ride, and Indiana holidays of 1836 and the 1860s. In French Lick, tree lighting ceremonies at both the French Lick Resort and West Baden Springs Resort kick off their “50 Days of Lights” celebration, with live musical performances, visits by Santa and Mrs. Claus, ornament making, cookie decorating, fireworks, and more. And new this year is the West Baden Gingerbread House, a must-see. Tree lighting at West Baden Springs Resort takes place Nov. 16, and at French Lick Resort Nov. 22. In Anderson, the Paramount Theatre’s Festival of Trees, Nov. 30-Dec. 7, is highlighted with decorated trees, trains and music.

Indiana German Heritage Society to spotlight the importance of German immigrants in Indiana. It will include “10 Christmas traditions you didn’t know were German.” In addition, new foods will include a Belgian hot chocolate, spaetzle (German version of mac and cheese) and flammkuchen (a flatbread pizza). Ferdinand will host its 22nd annual Christkindlmarkt Nov. 16-17. And on Nov. 29-Dec. 1, Peru will hold its inaugural Christkindlmarkt on the Courthouse Square. In addition to German foods and Christmas ornaments, it will offer live entertainment that includes two German bands, soloists singing in German, a magician, outdoor ice skating and wagon rides, and live reindeer. Lights of a different kind are at the free Enchanted Luminaria Walk at Muncie’s Minnetrista Dec. 6-7. Holiday parades are popular – in Shipshewana Nov. 9, Logansport Nov. 22, in Cannelton Nov. 29, Chesterton Nov. 30, Tell City Dec. 7, Leopold Dec. 8, and Monon Dec. 14. A Very Merry Main Street Christmas Parade in Lafayette, at night on Dec. 7, is the state’s largest holiday parade. And in Winimac their Lighted Christmas Parade is Dec. 6. There’s additional entertainment – on stage, on film, at home. Traditions include Frosty and Santa and the Grinch on television, along with It’s a Wonderful Life and Christmas Vacation. A Christmas Story is based on its author’s Hammond childhood; now Indiana Welcome Center in Hammond presents A Christmas Story Comes Home each year. Historic mansions are often decorated for the holidays; they include the Barker Mansion in Michigan City, the Seiberling in Kokomo, Copshaholm in South Bend and Ruthmere in Elkhart. In some places, an entire downtown joins in on a festive event. There’s Muncie’s Gobble Wobble pub and eatery crawl in on the evening of Small Business Saturday (Nov. 30). Cambridge City’s Winter Wonderland is also on the evening of Nov. 30 with luminaries lining Main Street, horse-drawn carriage rides, carolers, and shopping specials. Zionsville’s Christmas in the Village is Nov. 30, Mooresville’s Victorian Christmas Dec. 7, and Martinsville’s Cookie Stroll is Dec. 14. Wolf Park in Battle Ground hosts a multitude of events focusing on their resident wolves. Visitors can see the annual Thanksgiving turkey toss, when each wolf gets an entire turkey to eat, on Nov. 30. And on Dec. 14, Santa will stop by. Visitors are invited to help decorate a tree with edible ornaments for the wolves, then visit with Santa indoors. The Eiteljorg Museum in Indianapolis will again offer Jingle Rails: The Great Western Adventure, its popular locomotive wonderland that takes visitors on a journey through the American West via nine working model trains. It winds past local Indy treasures before heading out to check Mt. Rushmore, the Grand Canyon, Hollywood and more. Runs Nov. 23Jan. 20. In Orange County, the holiday season is heralded by pajamas – on kids, parents and grandparents – all boarding the Polar Express for its

annual holiday runs on the French Lick Scenic Railway. Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 8-Dec. 23, plus additional weekdays in December. Ditto for Noblesville, as the Nickel Plate Express offers the Reindeer Ride Express weekends Nov. 23Dec. 22, with multiple rides each day. This year the train will board in Noblesville’s Forest Park and travel to Arcadia and back. The 150-year-old Arcadia Train Depot will be decorated to look like Santa’s Workshop. “People had a great time on the train last year but they were looking to extend their visit,” says director Dagny Zupin. Forest Park will host additional activities, and downtown Noblesville has shopping and dining opportunities. And then there’s Santa Claus, Indiana, where it’s Christmas all year long. But in December, it’s really Christmas. Three December weekends are stuffed with events that include a parade, Das Nikolausfest, huge lighting displays, and Scrooge’s Christmas. Chat with an elf on the North Pole Network, roast chestnuts on an open 18

fire, go Christmas caroling, visit live reindeer. Have breakfast with Santa, have dinner with Santa, have bedtime milk and cookies with Santa. The festive spirit continues through the end of the year. Limberlost State Historic Site in Geneva will host its countdown to “midnight” with a family-friendly balloon drop at noon. The Indiana State Museum in Indianapolis will host its familyfriendly New Year’s Eve party 6-9 p.m. Dec. 31 with magic, music, dancing, face painting, exploring the entire museum. There’s an eco-friendly streamer and confetti explosion in the Great Hall when the clock strikes 8 p.m. The ball drops at midnight, accompanied by music and fireworks, in the Courthouse Square in downtown Kokomo. French Lick Resort hosts dinner and dancing to usher in the new year.

WABASH – He clearly remembers the kitchen chair, the wooden spoon, the cake batter – all part of his strong ties to his oldest sister, Cindy. It’s led him to a culinary career and a move to Wabash, where surprising business assistance helped make his dream come true. “My sister had me standing on chairs in the kitchen, stirring cake mixes or helping her fix dinner back as far as I can remember,” Harry Kilmer says. “She’s always loved to cook.” And then, so did he. Kilmer

chef, but he wanted to be a cowboy or astronaut. As he got older, he had a series of jobs in a series of occupations – in a pet store, in insurance, in auto sales. “Hard as I tried to stay out of cooking, I always went back to it,” he says.

was in perhaps 3rd or 4th grade when his parents came home from work to a cooked meal, courtesy of their elementary school son. The new stove had just been delivered; he hooked it up and managed to cook dinner. His grandmother always said he should be a

He was an adult when his parents moved to Florida. He followed and, because he’d never really taken cooking seriously, got some schooling in the food industry. He met Judy from Boston; they married. And his sister, who was by then living in Wabash, kept sending him job listings. “But there was nothing here that interested me,” he says. Moves to North Carolina and West Virginia followed. So did those Wabash job suggestions from his sister. Finally, in 2004, Kilmer and his wife moved to Wabash and he became executive chef at the Honeywell Center. “My favorite little hangout in town was the Old Kettle Saloon,” he says. “Nothing ever happened there.” But the camaraderie couldn’t be beat. One night the owner suggested Kilmer buy the bar and serve food.

Kilmer replied, “Sell it to me and I will.” That’s as far as it went. Then. Less than a week later, Kilmer’s wife asked him when he was going to meet with the owner to buy the bar. “I always wanted my own place, but I never thought it would be a bar,” Kilmer says. “Deep down inside I knew I could do it.” So the Kilmers brightened up the place and bought some used restaurant equipment so he could open a kitchen. But they ran out of money and put the kitchen on hold. He went to work at Taylor University during the day, at the bar during evenings and nights. In 2015 the Deluxe Corporation – of business checks and marketing strategies – sponsored a “Small Business Revolution: Main Street” contest to celebrate its 100th anniversary. It provided a makeover

for a small town; Wabash won. It included extensive help for six small businesses. Among them, Harry’s Old Kettle Saloon. It re-branded the business to Harry’s Old Kettle Pub & Grill, and it designed a logo, business cards, signage, menus and a website. It also finished the kitchen, bought a smoker, tables and chairs, and provided accounting expertise. Four years after buying the bar, Kilmer began serving food. “Harry’s Old Kettle Pub & Grill isn’t just another eatery; it’s an establishment that has stood the test of time, defied industry odds and now stands as a community gathering place for generations to come,” reads the website for the program. Brad – named after a local minister who likes to stop in. And plenty of alcohol choices. A recent beer tap count was 27, bottle count 37, can count 28. Wednesday’s bar special is draft root beer. “I’m a bar,” Kilmer says. “I didn’t want to change the history and vibe of the bar. I didn’t want to lose what the Kettle was. It was always a great place to come, have fun and just enjoy yourself. I wanted to add food, but I wanted to keep it a bar that serves food, not a restaurant that serves liquor.” Must be 21 to enter. Indiana pig farmer Heather Hill can’t remember a time when she wasn’t interested in agriculture. In LaPorte County, where she grew up, Heather and her siblings showed livestock in the 4-H program. Heather’s grandfather was also an Indiana pig farmer, and her mother was raised on the farm. “Our parents instilled the importance of agriculture in us and giving back to our community at an early age,” she recalls. As she grew older and went off to college at Purdue University, Heather chose animal science as her major. She also met and fell in love with Marc Hill, a farm boy from Greenfield. “Initially, I thought I wanted to be a large animal veterinarian, but I soon realized that I really wanted to work with the people and the animals on a more daily basis,” she says. When Marc and Heather married in July of 2000, Heather became an integral part of Hill Farms, a multi-generational farm in Hancock County operated by her family and her in-laws, Steve and Debi Hill. Heather and Marc’s three children, Addison, 17, Reese, 13, and Hadley, 10, also help out on the farm when they’re not in school. “We raise corn, soybeans, wheat and pigs. Marc is the 4th generation of his family to raise pigs in Hancock County, and we are proud to be raising the 5th generation,” says Heather. Being a woman in the farming business is something else Heather is proud of, but she doesn’t take it lightly. “I am very lucky to have had several amazing women in my life to help encourage me to follow my dreams and forge my path, and I am blessed to be able to work alongside my mother-in-law,” says Heather. “She is an amazing role model for me and my children. I’m a firm believer that everyone can be whatever they want as long as they work hard and follow their dreams.” On a typical day, Heather wakes to the sound of her alarm before sunrise. Once she gets her three children off to school, her work on the farm begins. From feeding pigs twice a day and checking conditions in the barns to computer work and record keeping, there’s never a dull moment on the farm. “Each day is very different, and very different for Marc, Steve, Debi and myself as we all have different areas that we take care of on the farm,” she says. “Our days also depend on what season we are in on the farm. There is work to be done each and every day with raising pigs; however, spring and fall are definitely much busier with also raising corn, soybeans and wheat.” Hill Farms is a farrow to finish farm, which means their pigs are born and raised on the farm until they go to market. Although pigs have a reputation for eating anything you put in front of them, Heather says their digestive systems are actually very different from that of a cow or horse. They need a diet comprised of corn and soybean meal and other essential nutrients and vitamins. “All the corn we raise on our family farm is used to feed our pigs. We sell our soybeans to a local soybean processing plant and turn traveliN Holiday 2019

around and buy soybean meal from them,” Heather explains. “We have our own feed meal on our family farm, so we store the corn and soybean meal in bins on our farm to make feed for our pigs when they need it.” According to Jeanette Merritt, director of checkoff programs at Indiana Pork, there are nearly 3,000 pig farmers like the Hills in the state of Indiana, farming a total of around 4.1 million pigs. Indiana is the fifth leading state in pork production in the country. October is National Pork Month, making it the perfect time to celebrate our state’s thriving pork industry. “Pig farmers feed people,” says Merritt. “We provide nearly 15,000 jobs in Indiana. Farms contribute to the local tax base, and farmers donate to their local food pantries to help feed their communities.” And it’s Indiana Pork’s job to support farmers like Heather Hill and promote pork products to consumers. If buying local is important to Indiana consumers, they’re almost guaranteed that their pork is coming from Indiana farms. There are two processing plants in our state and another two just across the state line in Michigan and Kentucky. “Pig farming is so important to Indiana and the country,” says Heather. “I know everyone has a different definition of local, but being able to buy pork from Indiana pig farms in Indiana grocery stores is pretty local to me…. In addition to providing pork, our family puts the majority of the money we make on our farm right back into our own community and state. The impact of agriculture on local communities cannot be forgotten.”

PERU – Not so many years ago watercolorist Sarah Luginbill struck up a conversation with abstract artist Diane Lehman about their work situations. Luginbill was looking for a different studio in which to work. So was Lehman. Turns out two additional artists, oil painter Jill Brandush and calligrapher/ pastel artist Tana Bondar, were, too. 42

Fast forward to the fall of 2017. Together, the four artists opened Gallery 15 & Studios – at 15 E. Main – in a former music store. They work individually but collectively critique, encourage and celebrate each other. They display and sell their works, and they spotlight a guest artist each month. Visitors are invited to watch them work. “We have found the real value is in the partnership,” Brandush says. “We gather and we critique and we talk about art. All of us have grown.” She continued, “I drive half an hour to get here because of this town. Peru loves its artists, they love its musicians – they embrace the idea of the arts in Peru.” That goes back to the town’s circus
heritage as well as theater. “We used to have five live theaters here,” says Vicki Draper, who returned to her hometown after a career in Washington, D.C., and has chaired a number of recent Peru festivals. And now, after years of decline, the town is experiencing an upswing in excitement matched by an upswing in new businesses. “Community leaders have visions that are bigger than their own personal businesses,” Luginbill says. “They see the community working together.” That vision is shared by a number of new businesses which have chosen to open their doors in Peru within the past decade. It’s found at the Miami County Artisan Gallery, which offers studio space to a large
façade program which renovated downtown storefronts, and to city/ developer partnerships in rehabbing old buildings. “Smaller projects happened, and then bigger projects happened. The response is overwhelming.” That excitement comes from the mix of newcomers, returnees and longtime residents. It’s seen in Second Saturdays, a themed event each month on the Courthouse Square. “We want everyone to come and see what we’ve

number of local artists working in not only oils, watercolors and wood but also chocolates. In fact, Redmon Chocolates uses cocoa beans from all over the world in their award-winning chocolates. Owner/artist Marlene Compton says it’s pushed by “the forward thinking of ‘let’s build.’” At City Wineworks, Peru’s newest brewery and winery, owners Jason and Desiree McKeever concur. So do Sandra Tossou at Dreams to Reality Cakes, Fred Stadtler at So Good Chocolates, and Conny Woodruff at Conny’s Little German Breadshop, three other new businesses. The culinary scene in Peru draws locals and visitors alike. Club 14 owner Denise Yater has a strong history with the town, and has become known not just for the restaurant’s friendly atmosphere, but also for her thin crust pizzas and slow-roasted ribs that are prepared daily. Just down the street is Smitty McMusselman’s Pub & Grub, opened by Sara Musselman in 2014 in a century-old building. And at 6th Street Coffee Company, owner Kreig Adkins serves up coffee that’s custom roasted daily, and flavored by hand. It didn’t happen by chance. The Miami County Economic Development Authority and Rediscover Downtown Peru have been instrumental in growing optimism in this community of 11,000 residents (with a total of 36,000 in Miami County). Peru’s location – about an hour from Indianapolis, Lafayette, South Bend or Fort Wayne – means residents can combine their love of small town living with big city amenities. “People see opportunity here where they didn’t before,” says Steve Dobbs, president of Rediscover Downtown Peru, local name for the Main Street program. It’s tied to the town’s 2015

got,” Dobbs says. And they are; statistics show a growing attendance. The new is clearly building upon the mainstays. This is Cole Porter’s hometown; the Cole Porter Festival is an annual event in June. This is “the circus capital of the world”; the Circus City Festival is held each July. And in late November, Peru will usher in its inaugural Christkindlmarkt. Porter’s home is now an inn featuring three suites – the “Night & Day” suite on the first floor and the Cole Porter and “Anything Goes” suites on the second, reached by a stairway painted with piano keys on the steps. “A lot of people come here because it’s on their bucket list,” says Jill Ash, who owns the Cole Porter Inn with her husband, Marlin. Porter’s favorite fudge is again available in town. It was created by Louis and Gretchen Arnold in the early 1900s in their candy shop named Arnold’s. Porter enjoyed it not only when he was home in Peru but he also had it shipped to his homes in New York, Los Angeles and Paris – lots of it – for his extravagant parties. The recipe had been all but forgotten when Fred and Amy Stadtler and her brother Rick Ploss opened So Good Candies in 2016 and began making the fudge again. They’ve also brought back the Gold Brick candy bar, chocolate bark, and creams, using recipes the Arnolds used which were found “in a little black notebook, handwritten in pencil.” Items from Porter’s New York City apartment are in the Miami County Museum in Peru. A huge gun collection attracts firearms aficionados, and some come looking for the “oddities” that include a two-headed calf and a child’s dress from the Trail of Tears. Local circus history fills the third floor of the county museum, but the Circus City Center devotes its entire building – its entire being – to the circus. Its museum, open year-round, tells the story of Peru’s circus history since the
late 1800s when circuses over-wintered near here. The highlight of the year is the circus festival in July, when about 200 county youngsters ages 7-21, amateurs who have been practicing since February, put on 10 performances during an eightday festival. Several have gone on to perform with professional circus venues. “The flying trapeze is our big pull, or the high wire,” says Tim Bessignano, museum vice president. “Flying through the air – that’s big stuff, like being king of the hill. It’s got a lot of clout.”

Additional outdoor activities keep the Miami State Recreation Area at Mississinewa Lake busy year-round. With more than 460 campsites as well as cabins, along with one of the state DNR’s largest beaches, it’s a popular place. Grissom Air Museum focuses on telling the history of the former Grissom Air Force base with rotating exhibits inside and two dozen aircraft outside. The museum is a huge draw for tourists, and was named as Indiana’s second best museum in the state by the Indiana Office of Tourism Development. He says “the festival is the granddaddy of them all – it’s what pulls it all together.” That downtown enthusiasm is blanketing the entire county. There’s growing interest in the Nickel Plate Trail, Miami Reservoir State Recreation Area at Mississinewa Lake, and Grissom Air Museum. The Nickel Plate Trail, along the path of the former Nickel Plate Railroad, was born 20 years ago. Its 40 miles from Kokomo to Rochester offer hiking, biking and non-motorized possibilities – including cross country skiing in the winter – along a wide mostly-paved pathway. Two popular 5K and 10/15K walks/runs are in the fall: the Cole Porter Classic in October and the Thanksgiving Day Trot n’ Gobble.

Welcome to Whiting, the little company town (incorporated 1895) built around Standard Oil on two square miles. These days it’s big on optimism that’s producing even bigger results. The refinery is still here, now with BP (British Petroleum), and it’s still a major employer, but this city (incorporated 1903) of 5,000 is turning itself into an enviable tourist destination on Lake Michigan. The seed was planted 25 years ago when Martin Dybel came up with the idea of selling pierogis in a festival-like setting. “We always had an end-of-July fest of some kind,” he says. “With the rise of malls, downtowns like this took a hit; we needed something to re-invent ourselves. The majority of this town is Eastern European. I felt it was time we celebrated who we were and who built this town.” 48

So, he told fellow Chamber of Commerce members, “We’re gonna’ have a pierogi festival.” It would be named for the popular Polish dumpling typically filled with cheese and potatoes. They thought he was out of his mind. But they went along with trying out the idea. “A lady in town had a pierogi store, and she made us 1,800 pierogis that she froze,’ Dybel says. “We rented a two-basket fryer and the Chamber of Commerce members cooked the pierogis.” He continues: “People wanted dozens, and we could fry just one dozen at a time. The line was a block long. That’s when we knew we had something.” Pierogi Fest® has become one of Indiana’s premier festivals. The
“wackiest fest in the Midwest” showcases pride in the city’s ethnic heritage with a whole lot of selfdeprecating fun. It’s got Mr. Pierogi (who’s even got a fan club); his entourage the 11-member Pieroguettes that include Miss Potato, Miss Cheese, and Miss Sauerkraut; the bushas (grandmothers) who come dressed in housecoats and stockings (most likely falling down) with babushkas (scarves) on their heads. They’re all part of the polka parade, which also includes the zany precision lawnmower drill team. Add to this the pierogi toss, pierogieating contest, foods, crafts, bands, …. The festival has brought huge crowds to city – numbering more than 300,000 now, making it the third largest festival in the state. But it’s for just one threeday weekend in late July. Other warm-weather events fill the

weeks between Memorial Day and Labor Day, many of them free. And all along 119th Street, the city’s major thoroughfare. “We always do our special events in our business district,” says Joe Stahura, Whiting’s mayor. This month’s events include Wickedly Whiting on Oct. 12, a Halloween skit roving down the business district with ghosts, goblins and ghouls that gets scarier as the evening goes on, and Cruise Night featuring classic cars on Oct. 16. But city leaders wanted something that would be indoors and attract visitors during cooler weather. They started investigating possibilities for a tourism bump that was longer-lasting. They stumbled onto former mascot David Raymond, the original Phillie Phanatic, who had an online hall of fame. The idea quickly grew to creating a brick-and-

for children at least 7 and adults who can swim. In other words, a floating ninja course. How to get there? Swim out. Life jackets are required. Tourism, however, is just part of the story of Whiting Reinvented. There’s a healthy mix of old and new throughout the town. Former residents are returning and brand-new residents are opting to join the citizenry. New businesses are located among those that have been here for a while. New eateries are close to long-time favorites. New housing nestles next to spruced-up homes that have been here for decades. This broader revitalization was encouraged by fresh thinking and some gutsy moves. “We knew the life of Whiting was the business district,” Mayor Joe says. “We invested significant dollars into changing and modifying the streetscape. We created a facade program. We purchased properties nobody wanted and we fixed the façades, stabilized the buildings, and sold them for $1 if new owners would agree to rehab the buildings. And we gave grants to businesses.” In 2004 there were 49 vacancies out of 110 commercial properties in the downtown area; today there are four. Among the new businesses are Beggars Pizza, Mind Benders Puzzles & Games, Dos Sabores restaurant, and Comfort Roast Coffee House & Café. Once the business district was on its feet, the plan was expanded to other areas. The city purchased old homes to be rehabilitated or razed and replaced with new. Joel Bender of Mind Benders says Whiting is “just a nice walkable town. There’s always something going on. The city does great events. The Chamber does great events. The merchants do great events. There are plenty of things to do.”

mortar presence for it. Stahura – known to most folks as Mayor Joe – says it was developed solely to bring people to Whiting. A plus is that it’s wacky and comical, making it a perfect partner for Pierogi Fest®. One look at Reggy, the Hall of Fame’s huge furry mascot with yellow hair that looks like french fries, solidifies that thought. He’s known as “the purple party dude.” Many of the targeted visitors are from Chicago. “One of our larger suburbs,” Mayor Joe says. “There are 9½ million people right across the state line. When they come and see us, they’ll want to come back.” The Mascot Hall of Fame opened the day after Christmas last year. It provides an indoor event space which the city hadn’t had. It’s interactive, educational as well as entertaining. There’s a Build-a-Bear – or, more accurately, Build-a-Mascot – shop. There’s even a penalty box where parents can sit and relax. Executive Director Orestes Hernandez says the Hall is the country’s most unique children’s museum. The exhibits are all mascot-themed and are embedded with STEAM-based K-8 curriculum. Mascot inductees must have positively affected their communities. They must have built educational and community programs, visited hospitals, raised money for foundations, … and they’ve had to have been mascots for at least 10 years. New inductees will be chosen this month; a public online vote Oct. 20-26 is part of the process. The Hall of Fame looks out onto Lake Michigan, which hosts another unusual tourist attraction. It’s the WhoaZone water sports park at Whihala Beach, a summertime floating playground in the lake. It’s a one-acre inflatable water challenge course with slides, tunnels, towers, bridges and jumping platforms

Twinkling lights, cookies and wassail, and cozy cottages. Indiana State Park properties are offering a chance to experience these and more this holiday season. If you’re looking for a break from the hustle and bustle, skip the shopping lines and relax at a park to take in some holiday cheer. First, the twinkling lights. Just because the men of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) were camped away from home at what is now Ouabache State Park in 1939 didn’t mean they weren’t going to have a Christmas celebration. Instead of spending the holidays in a drab shelter with no decorations, the men took matters into their own hands. They found some blue lights, strung them from a flagpole diagonally, and made a tree shape. There were 16 strands and 16 lights per strand on that first tree, according to the historical committee of the Ouabache State Park Friends Group. traveliN Holiday 2019

“It was the very first light show on the property,” said Kathy Schwartz, Friends group president. It was also one of the first in the area, so people came from all around to see it. Eighty years later, Ouabache is celebrating that first light display at its annual Wonderland of Lights Celebration with a CCC tribute tree. The tree will include blue lights, though not 16 per strand like the original. “We thought it would be a great way to honor the CCC guys who helped build this area,” Schwartz said. What makes the event a wonderland of lights is local businesses and organizations that decorate sites within the campground with their own holiday lights. They take great pride in their creations, Schwartz said, and it creates a great show. Proceeds from the event go toward improvements at the park. The light show has become its biggest fundraiser. “We reinvested to make it even bigger and better,” Schwartz said. People who participate in the 5K Reindeer Run and 1.5 mile Jingle Jog on Saturday, Nov. 30 hosted jointly by the Bluffton Parks Department and the Ouabache Friends Group will get a sneak preview of the displays, as the course will take them through the park. The Wonderland of Lights will run Dec. 4-31 from 6 to 9 p.m. each night. The cost to enter the park is $5 per car. Now, for those cookies and wassail. Spring Mill State Park’s Christmas in the Village event will be on Friday, Dec. 6 from 5 to 9 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 7 from 1 to 9 p.m. with those tasty treats available both nights beginning at 6:30 p.m. traveliN Holiday 2019

until they are gone. Take a look inside the buildings as villagers prepare for Christmas with holiday meals and decorate the village with bows and boughs. Music is a big part of the celebration at Spring Mill. Carolers may greet you outside, while the Bedford dulcimer society will be performing inside the first cabin. On Friday night at 5 p.m. at the grist mill, the Appleseed Band will perform, while on Saturday night at the same time Wildflowers and Wheat will take the stage. The event has been going on for more than 25 years and Colletta Prewitt, program coordinator for Spring Mill State Park, said the event keeps getting better.
“The amazing part is, with the exception of a couple of people, it’s all run by volunteers. It really gets you in the holiday spirit.” The cozy cottage in Anderson’s Mounds State Park will keep that spirit alive. The Bronnenberg Home was built in 1840 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Each December staff at the park decorate the home like it’s 1897 and invite the public to celebrate a historic Christmas. This year’s event will be on Dec. 14 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. and there will be Victorian-era crafts, gingerbread cookies, spiced cider, and different events for families to participate in throughout the evening. “I really think it’s one of our

Mark your calendar now to attend these upcoming events throughout 2020: FEBRUARY French Lick Resort Chocolate Fest Chocoholics won’t want to miss a second of this sweet French-themed retreat; this year, taking over French Lick Springs Hotel’s Hoosier Hallway and Ballroom on Feb. 8 from 1 to 4 p.m. The resort’s pastry staff goes all out to create and present a decadent spread of more than 50 chocolates and desserts, along with cooking demonstrations, a mixology class and live entertainment. AUGUST Paoli Fest The Jaycee Park grounds come alive with art, music, food and fun during the two-day Paoli Fest each August. A diverse lineup of performers covers a vast range of musical genres across several stages, while artists and makers showcase their wares in Art Alley. Best of all, admission is free. Tomato Festival Each summer, many Hoosiers look forward to the delicious joy of biting into a perfectly ripe, sun-warmed Indiana tomato straight out of the garden. French Lick’s annual Tomato Festival captures the spirit of this distinctly Indiana pleasure with a full day of food and craft vendors, bounce houses and kid-friendly fun activities, live music, cornhole and a tomato salsa contest. FALL Fall Foliage In September and October, the hills of French Lick transform into idyllic leaf-peeping territory as the trees slowly cast off their summer greenery in favor of burnished gold, rich orange and fiery red autumn hues. SEPTEMBER Block Bash On the third weekend of September each year, Bear Hollow Wood Carvers return to French Lick for an awesome weekend of chainsaw art demonstrations with amazing results. More than a dozen wood carving artisans fire up their chainsaws and let the wood chips fly as they produce masterpieces to auction off. Winetasting, an artists marketplace, live entertainment and a classic car show round out the schedule of events. (P.S. You might want to pack some earplugs.) OCTOBER Art on the Green Browse one-of-a-kind works by regional artists during this juried art show held in downtown French Lick on the second full weekend in October. A colorful collection of treasures just waiting to be discovered includes garden art, ceramics, metal works, textiles, jewelry, dolls and more. Food, drink, face painting and live entertainment are all part of the package as well.
WINTER Polar Express Bring the whole family along for a magical ride on the Polar Express, conducted by French Lick Scenic Railway on select dates throughout November and December. Inspired by the modern holiday classic film, journeys travel round-trip to the “North Pole,” complete with hot cocoa, Christmas carols, gifts, treats and a visit with Old St. Nick himself. Jeffersonville, New Albany offers best of both worlds

Perched along the banks of the Ohio River, the two charming southern Indiana towns of Jeffersonville and New Albany offer visitors the best of both worlds – easy access to the big city (Louisville) with the pace and appeal of small-town life. Strolling the idyllic streets of Jeffersonville, it’s easy to see why Food Network’s “Chopped” champion, Chef Dallas McGarity, chose to open his latest restaurant, Portage House, here. First, there’s the river – a larger-than-life and breathtakingly beautiful character in the story of the town. Then there’s the charm, which simply radiates from the streets filled with historic homes and quaint shops. “There is so much room to grow and so many beautiful views,” says McGarity, whose riverfront restaurant features his unique twist on modern American cuisine. “The downtown Jeffersonville area has a small town feel that is just inviting.” In fact, the town, known by locals as “Jeff,” is so famous for its all-

American, small town feel that Barack Obama once used it as a backdrop for one of his political ads when he first ran for president. “He walked down the street, and you could see the awning of our store (in the ad),” said Diane Stawar, a certified mental health counselor who volunteers at Jeff Book, a not-for-profit used bookstore. “The Secret Service was on top of our building, and he gave a speech on one of our patios. I think his campaign thought of us as ‘downtown America’ – because we’re so cute and charming.” In fact, an entire section of the city, called the Old Jeffersonville Historic District, was listed on the
National Register of Historic Places in 1987 because of its architectural and historic significance. Just across the street from Jeff Book is the iconic Schimpff’s Confectionery, where they’ve been creating candy and other sweet treats for over 128 years. Opened in 1891 by Gustav Schimpff Sr. and Jr. in the same building as the current location, Schimpff’s is the oldest, continually operated, family-owned candy business in the United States. Complete with an old-fashioned soda fountain and original tin ceilings, the shop’s vintage candy cases and turn-of-the-century equipment will transport you back to traveliN Holiday 2019

sugar overload at Schimpff’s, head over a few blocks to Big Four Park and Big Four Pedestrian Bridge, a former railroad truss bridge, for a twomile round-trip stroll across the Ohio River to Louisville. Illuminated with LED lights in the evening, the bridge offers breathtaking views of the city skyline and the river. After your stroll, check out Parlour Pizza, Pearl Street Treats, or Café 223 on Pearl Street, all restored houses and hot spots for Big Four adventurers. In the last 10 years, Jeffersonville has seen a revitalization of its downtown area, with new buildings being built and old ones preserved and adapted into new uses. “We moved four houses that were threatened with demolition to a dilapidated parking lot on Pearl Street (401-407 Pearl Street),” says Jay Ellis of Jeffersonville Main Street, Inc. “Using grant funds, we restored the four houses, made one of them our downtown revitalization office, and made the other three spaces for businesses – two of which were

complete startups (a coffee shop and a taphouse).” Just a short drive from Jeffersonville is its equally charming sister city, New Albany. The crown jewel of the city is the Culbertson Mansion on Main Street, a stunning historic home that’s one of the Indiana State Museum’s twelve historic sites. Guided tours last one hour and include all four floors of the 20,000 square foot mansion, showcasing its awe-inspiring handpainted ceilings, carved staircase and elaborate plasterwork. And the history of this Victorian-era house and its residents will fascinate you! “We have been called the ‘little Biltmore,’ but this house was built almost 40 years before the Biltmore House in North Carolina. From the moment you set eyes on the cobblestones of Zionsville’s Main Street, you know you’ve found something special. Zionsville was founded in 1852 and established itself on the completion of the old Indianapolis, Cincinnati, and Lafayette Railroad. The original plat of the town consisted of nine blocks, containing 81 lots. The name “Zionsville” was given to the town in honor of William Zion of Lebanon, who was the principal founder. A decade later, in 1861, Abraham Lincoln made a whistle-stop speech in Zionsville when traveling to his inauguration. Fall Festivals & Events October is filled with fun fall themed events and activities. A visit to Anderson Orchard is a must - the 50 year old family owned and operated farm hosts fun events and every day experiences. Open seven days a week, the fun play area, hayrides and concession stand make for a fun family adventure, plus you can pick your own apples, raspberries and pumpkins while you’re there! The Morgan County Fall Foliage Festival (Oct. 10-13) is celebrating 60 years this year! Hoagy Carmichael: Among the 80-plus murals in Wayne County is this one of Hoagy Carmichael, part of Richmond’s recording heritage.
Art is big here. Huge, even. Sometimes two or three stories tall and visible from blocks away. More than 80 larger-than-life illustrations chronicle Wayne County’s history, all done as murals, and celebrated on the Murals’ Trail. Among the muralists is Pamela Bliss, who not only painted several murals in Wayne County and other Indiana spots, but also created a competition which brought additional art to Wayne County. “Not everyone goes to an art museum,” she says. “This is something the common person sees every day. It’s larger than life so it pulls you in.” Two murals offer a striking example conveying the region’s ties to the Underground Railroad. In Fountain City, the story unfolds at the Levi & Catharine Coffin State Historic Site. Here is the 1839 Coffin house with its hiding room, cellar well, and wagon with hidden compartment, all used by the Coffins in helping more than 2,000 freedom seekers escape slavery. potter’s wheel. “I try to make it real and honest,” Shafer says. “I like every aspect of the process, from mixing the clay to selling the pots.” Overbeck Pottery can be found at the Museum of Overbeck Art Pottery in Cambridge City. Educated in the arts, the Overbeck sisters started creating their unique pottery in 1911, and continued for more than 40 years. Many of the pieces are small, whimsical figurines. The value of the pottery has increased dramatically in recent decades. Librarian Dale Scott says, “They gave a lot away. One piece here was bought at a garage sale for $5 – now worth $40,000.” Overbeck pieces are also at the Richmond Art Museum. The focus of the museum is on American art, particularly Hoosier. “In the early 1900s Richmond, Indiana had a group of artists whose interest in fostering art in their community made an authentic contribution to the history of art in America. Richmond became

If artists were natural resources, the charming southern Indiana town of Madison would be the richest place in the state. Located on the scenic banks of the Ohio River and home to one of only 10 designated Arts & Cultural Districts in Indiana, the Madison arts scene is alive and well on every block, street, nook and cranny. “Madison has everything – we have an amazing natural environment. Our built environment – the architecture – is just crazy good,” says Kim Nyberg, director of the Madison Area Arts Alliance (MAAA). “And then we have a large collection of wonderfully creative people – and traditionally this community has been an arts community. It’s been here for hundreds of years.” Strolling through the streets of downtown Madison, you’ll encounter an amazing collection of creatives and organizations dedicated to the arts through fine art, music, theater, traditional trades, creative writing, culinary arts, healing arts, wine making, brew making, photography and art education. There’s literally something for everyone, says Nyberg, and if a particular artform is missing, “we can always add more cogs to the wheel.” Art on Main, a large lightfilled gallery on Main Street, hosts regular shows for the 88-member Madison Arts Club. There you’ll 108

meet Elle Smith, the president of the art club and a seasoned artist herself, who lives in a circa 1839 home in downtown, graduated from Madison High School and has lived in the town off and on throughout the years. “When my family first came to Madison, I only lived up on the hill,” she recalls. “But when my husband and I decided to come back to Madison in 2004, we moved downtown, and it’s a different world here. You can walk just about anywhere you want to go, you can walk down to the river, and you can see all the activities that go on in the town.” Just across the street, Gallery 115 offers an eclectic, multi-purpose space to stop in for a sandwich, dessert or cup of coffee, and browse the paintings of award-winning artist Eric Phagan. Part art gallery, part home décor gift shop and part café, Gallery 115 is home to Phagan’s studio and gallery, and some days, you might just catch him making art in his second-floor studio. Down the street a few blocks, Rembrandt’s Gallery and Wine

You can walk just about anywhere you want to go, you can walk down to the river, and you can see all the activities that go on in the town.” – Elle Smith Bar began as a place where owner Bob Maile created custom wooden tables, and eventually morphed into a stylish gallery and wine bar as well. “About 10 years ago, when we felt our tables were at the level of functional artwork, we decided to put a gallery around it to prove it,” Maile explains. “So we found about 50 different artists and artisans from all around the state and some from other states. And then we started the wine bar about 4 ½ years ago, with the idea of trying to bring more people in to see the tables and the artwork.”

And while you’re out for a stroll, don’t forget to look for MAAA’s latest public arts initiative, The Switch Box Project, which has transformed ordinary aluminum switch boxes around the town into works of art. In the mood for some soothing tunes? Music lovers can take their pick from a number of venues in downtown Madison. Many restaurants and bars feature live music on a weekly basis. And Red Bicycle Hall on Main Street is the premier venue for live music and theater events, often bringing in popular bands from around the country to its living room-style venue. House of Jane, owned by local barber and artist Jane Vonderheide, hosts House of Jane Songwriter Sessions at her shop. The idea behind the sessions is to bring one local songwriter and one Nashville or regional songwriter together in an intimate (20 person) concert similar to NPR’s Tiny Desk series. If you’re looking to brush up on your rusty guitar skills or purchase an instrument to play, Crawdaddy Music offers music lessons and also has a large selection of new, used and rare vintage musical instruments. Once upon a time, the southern Indiana town of Madison was known as one of the premier brewing cities west of the Alleghenies, crafting great beer in its four breweries until 1918. Then Prohibition hit, and the result was a 100-year drought in a city that ironically houses the oldest standing brewery building in Indiana. But this boozy fairy tale has a happy ending. Following the century-long drought, Madison breweries made a long-awaited comeback starting in 2018, and the brew scene is shaping up quite nicely.

Mad Paddle Brewery owner, Jerry Wade, was the catalyst and knight-in-shining armor leading the revival. “Opening a brewery was not on my radar screen at all,” he says. “I was looking for a small town to retire in, and while looking for houses, I stumbled on a building that was the oldest brewery in the state. Lightning hit me in the head, and I thought, ‘Why not bring beer back to Madison?’” The Indianapolis native and Ball State alumni put his business and marketing skills to work and eventually transformed a late 1800s feed mill into a hip microbrewery. Mad Paddle boasts the largest outdoor patio in the city of Madison and also features trivia nights on Thursdays and live acoustic music every Sunday afternoon from 4 to 6 p.m. “The name ‘Mad Paddle’ is a tribute to the feed mill and its paddle bucket system that carried the grain from the basement to the roof,” Wade explains. At any given time, the 21-andup microbrewery and tap room features 12 total taps – six are Mad Paddle’s own with the remaining six as rotating guest taps. Beer lovers 122

have rated Mad Paddle number 1 out of 200 microbreweries in the state on the app “Untappd,” and Wade is pleased as punch, or… beer. “We brew a new beer about every two weeks,” Wade says. “My favorite is always changing, but if I had to pick one, I’d say it’s the Wicket Blonde, our first beer we ever brewed. After a 100-year absence, I brought a brewery back on the 100-year anniversary – to see people come from Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio and other states to a brewery when I wasn’t even from the beer industry – that’s gratifying.” Up on Madison’s hilltop, another brewery has emerged – the New Madison Brewing Company, which opened in May of 2019. After home-brewing for nearly a decade, chief executive manager Nick Privette was convinced by his friends Daryl Hardesty (chief operating manager) and Chris Bratten (brand manager) to open a taproom. Featuring a current list of six large batch beers made using their 10-barrel system and names like Chocolate Coffee Stout and Raspberry Wheat, there are plenty of brews for beer lovers to enjoy. With three beautiful locations
listed on the Indiana Wine Trail, the winery scene is also flourishing in Madison. Near the edge of town on quiet Mill Street, Lanthier Winery is Madison’s oldest winery. Surrounded by beautiful gardens reminiscent of the French countryside, Lanthier is a tourist destination, not only for its wine, but also for its gardens and art. Madison native and nationally recognized painter Eric Phagan was the first artist to complete a painting for Lanthier’s Garden of Art, which the winery’s master gardener Tami Hagemier calls “an interactive, educational fine art experience.” Another artsy winery on the wine trail is the Thomas Family Winery & Rustic Bakery, downtown on 2nd Street. Located in an 1850s stable and carriage house, the art inside this winery is of the culinary nature – artisan breads in particular, with flavors such as sun-dried tomato focaccia royale, jalapeñojack, rosemary-olive and sourdough raisin. made on site. And, chances are if you visit the winery on a weekend, you’ll probably hear some live music – from Celtic and bluegrass to mountain and modern folk. Located five miles from the Ohio River on the outskirts of Madison is Madison Vineyards Estate Winery and Bed & Breakfast. With 40 acres of vineyards, the winery focuses on producing award-wining wines from the grape varieties grown in its own rich, well-drained soil. Dedicated

Indiana is home to more than 100 wineries and tasting rooms, and each is an ideal destination for holiday celebrations, seasonal shopping, and discovering those extra special gifts for the wine enthusiasts in your life. Many people are surprised by the significant impact of Indiana’s wine industry, and how quickly the industry has grown.
