EXPANDS Art TOWN

& CULTURE FOCUS

WITH REVISED COMMISSION

by Holly Fisher

F

or many years, the Town of Mount Pleasant had a Pride Commission to hand out the annual Civic Pride Award and manage a matching grant program for planting trees on property that was accessible to or beneficial to the public.

Under Mayor Linda Page, the idea to better recognize the artistic community and cultural heritage of Mount Pleasant led to a restructuring of the commission into what is now the Culture, Arts & Pride Commission (CAP).

“We wanted to be able to expand the town’s support of our artistic community and expand cultural heritage,” said Nicole Harvey, Special Events Manager for the Town. “Out of that was born the CAP Commission.” For the last three years, the commission has been working quietly behind the scenes to formulate its role in the town and prioritize key projects. One of its most visible initiatives has been wrapping traffic signal boxes along U.S. Highway 17 with artwork created by local residents. In fall 2017, the commission selected the art to complete all but two of the boxes on Highway 17 and plans to expand to other areas of town. A new effort coming out of the commission this spring is It’s Raining Art, which will encourage people to keep an eye out for poetry on the sidewalks — but only when it rains. Residents will be asked to submit short pieces of poetry and the selected works will be turned into stencils with help from the local students. The poems will be transferred onto the sidewalk using a special spray that appears only when the surface is wet.

Harvey said the commission also is looking into a Paint the Town project that will add murals to buildings around town. CAP will be looking at town buildings, such as a blank wall at the R.L. Jones Center, as well as working with private businesses that might want to partner on hiring artists to beautify their buildings. Local event planner Kenda Sweet serves as chair of the CAP Commission. She said the commission will continue to work with the sculpture department at the College of Charleston to select two new sculptures annually for the pocket park on Coleman Boulevard. “My goal is to have visual art in every park and every public space in Mount Pleasant,” Sweet said. She recognizes how much the Town of Mount Pleasant has grown and a goal of the CAP Commission is to maintain the town’s authenticity and the values that are attracting so many people here.

“CAP is making Mount Pleasant more pleasant,” Kenda Sweet said. “We want to keep a unique and authentic community that’s not Joe Anywhere.”

Sweet said the town can take the lead on that effort, helping maintain the feel of a small town with the arts component of a large city. The poems will be placed in high-traffic areas. Some possible “This is a great way for governments to be more accessible and locations include libraries, Towne community-oriented,” she said. “Whether you’re in government Centre and the Farmers Market or a citizen, we’re all in this together. We’re all citizens of the same Pavilion among others. Harvey community and have the common goal of making our town the best said they also plan to reach out it can be.” to Mount Pleasant schools so students can submit their poetry for consideration in the program. STRIKING A

W

hen Chuck Davis saw an ad seeking a guitar instructor for the Town of Mount Pleasant Recreation Department, he felt prompted to tap into a skill he didn’t even realize he had. More than eight years later, Davis has taught countless children and adults how to play the guitar.

“It was a gift I didn’t know I had … a gift I wasn’t using to work with young people,” he said. Now students from ages 6 to 60 come to Davis for a weekly lesson ranging from beginner to intermediate. Davis describes his classes as “practical guitar.” He’s teaching students how to sing and play or how to accompany others who are singing in a band, at a special event or at church. A long-time musician, Davis grew up in Hanahan, but left to pursue a songwriting career in Nashville. Several years ago, Davis returned to the Lowcountry. Living in Mount Pleasant now, he’s a full-time guitar instructor giving five or six lessons each day to as many as 25 students. He continues to write songs and play music for weddings and other special events. His love of songwriting even spills over into his guitar lessons where many students are interested in the art of songwriting. He’s written songs with several of his students, helping them fine tune their vocals, their guitar playing and their writing - all in one class. There’s an added benefit to Davis’ music lessons that’s less about chords and more about confidence. A couple times a year, Davis hosts Guitar Night, a kind of recital that gives the students the opportunity to showcase what they’ve learned in front of a small audience. Davis recalls a young student last year who told him after the concert, “I had this picture in my mind that was tremendously scary, but it wasn’t anything like that and now I want to do it again.” 6 | IN MOTION MOUNT PLEASANT RECREATION MAGAZINE

That event gives the students a newfound confidence to play in front of a crowd - even a small gathering of friends and family, Davis said.

“It’s a safe place,” Chuck Davis said. “We’re in a big room, but with people they know. And if they mess up, we just say, ‘Oops,’ and start over.” Those “awesome moments” really keep Davis inspired, and he’s quick to tell others about the music lessons available through the town’s Recreation Department. For many people, finding out the department has an arts component is a revelation, he said. In addition to the guitar, students can sign up for piano, drums and percussion, and voice lessons. Tina Carter, Program Coordinator, said most lessons start at the beginner level, but can work up to higher level instruction. Lessons are private with one-on-one instruction and students sign up for a month at a time. The cost is $90 for four 30-minute lessons. In many cases the cost of lessons through the town is more affordable than some other options - another aspect of teaching with the town Davis appreciates. “A year or two ago, I did a price comparison and (these lessons) are pretty affordable,” he said. “It’s one of the things I feel good about.” In addition to music lessons, other arts-related classes include drawing, dance, photography, drama and more. (See pages 23 & 24 for a full listing of options.)

LEE Rises MITCHELL

by Holly Fisher

TO THE NATIONAL STAGE

F

f you’ve been to the Blessing of the Fleet, WEZL’s Party in the Park, the Mount Pleasant Farmers Market or even Wild Wing Café on Coleman Boulevard in recent years you may have heard Mitchell Lee singing solo or with the band Southwood. Now, you can say you “knew him when” because, in 2017, Lee catapulted to the national stage when he snagged a spot on the TV show, “The Voice.” Lee, a graduate of The Citadel and South Carolina native, channeled some other South Carolina talent when he sang Hootie & the Blowfish’s classic tune, “Hold My Hand” for his blind audition on Season 13. Judges were impressed with Lee’s performance and he ended up on Blake Shelton’s musical team. Lee describes standing before some musical megastars as surreal. “I felt like I was watching someone else’s life,” he said. Now, Lee is adjusting to a new normal — a day in the life of Mitchell Lee that involves working with the likes of Rascal Flatts, Kelly Clarkson and, of course, Blake Shelton. It’s quite the switch from his days as a Citadel cadet with plans to commission into the U.S. Army and become a dentist. But sometimes life takes a turn. Just as Lee was about to graduate from The Citadel, his mother unexpectedly passed away. Her death rocked Lee to his core and reminded him that life really is short.

“It’s important to live in such a way that you’re not wasting the present time. If you’re always looking for tomorrow, you’re never really living for the day.” Lee recalled his mother’s surprise when he told her his plans to attend The Citadel and become a dentist. “I always saw you growing up to be an actor or a rock star,” Lee’s mother told him. After her death, those words came back to Lee. Dental school wasn’t going anywhere. It was time to live for today. So Lee began to more seriously pursue music, playing all around Charleston and joining with other musicians to form Southwood. Lee began writing music and started to feel like a legitimate artist. He wanted to take the band to Nashville. When his bandmates didn’t want to leave Charleston, Lee struck out on his own. He headed to Music City, learning about the music industry,

songwriting and networking. Lee played a weekly music gig in Nashville and the person who booked him submitted a video of Lee to “The Voice”. “Then The Voice emailed me about a VIP audition and the rest became history,” Lee said. Despite rubbing elbows with music stars in Los Angeles and Nashville, Lee hasn’t forgotten his Carolina roots. “Those days at the Mount Pleasant Farmers Market were essential to my development,” he said. “You can’t skip those steps. In every phase of growth as an artist you have to start somewhere and that means small. If you’re thrown onto the national stage without going through those steps, that would be obvious.” Since appearing on “The Voice”, Lee has received messages from people all over the world, but those that mean the most are from people who knew Lee when he played at their sister’s wedding or a local oyster roast. “Those are really special,” he said. “Those people have been there from the beginning, riding the wave with me.” After “The Voice”, Lee said he simply wants to “put out music I can be proud of.” He may return to the Carolinas to be closer to family, making Nashville a second home. “I’m born and bred a South Carolina artist and you can hear it in my music,” Lee said. “What’s authentic in me is something that comes from being from South Carolina. I would never feel satisfied in my soul to sing something not authentic to me.” What would Lee’s mom say if she could see him now? Lee pauses for a moment. She’d say, “I told ya.” “I feel the dream I started chasing after graduating from the military academy … every single moment of chasing that dream has been completely worth it,” Lee said. “Here I am on TV singing songs and playing music. She had to be right.” IN MOTION MOUNT PLEASANT RECREATION MAGAZINE | 15
