DUBUQUE IS WHERE STARTED.

Iowa

It’s where limestone bluffs meet the Mississippi River. Where the quirk of the world’s shortest,

steepest, railway is matched by stunning views found at the top. It’s where buildings that span city blocks once milled lumber but now house a ‘Top Chef.’

Dubuque is where you’ll find Iowa’s longest-running farmers' market and an international film festival. Where you’ll discover two Smithsonian-affiliated museums and over 30 murals that have earned

national acclaim. It’s where you’ll come to visit but want to stay. Dubuque is

2021 DUBUQUE TRAVEL GUIDE

Before becoming a formal settlement, the Meskwaki Tribe cared for the land and resources found along the Mississippi River valley. The first permanent settler to the area was a French-Canadian fur trader named Julien Dubuque who befriended the caretakers of this area and would go on to settle it. Under the Black Hawk Purchase Treaty in 1833, the United States Government opened the area up for settlement. It came to be known as Dubuque when it was chartered in 1837. Iowa later became a state in 1846, 13 years after the treaty. Dubuque truly is #WhereIowaStarted!

.

Dubuque was founded in 1833. That is 13 years before the state of Iowa!

The first permanent settler to Dubuque was a French-Canadian fur trader, Julien Dubuque. He befriended the Meskwaki Native Americans. After developing close relationships with the Meskwaki, Dubuque was shown and permitted to mine the many lead deposits of the area. He named the area Mines of Spain, and successfully operated it until his death in 1810.

1856

Dubuque’s Shot Tower was built in 1856 to produce lead shot for the military. Molten lead was poured through a grate at the top of the tower. Then, the relatively uniform drops that fell from the grate would land in the water below which cooled the lead into its solid-state. The tower has been burned (interior only), hit by a train, repaired, and renovated to its current state.

1897

87 years after Dubuque’s death in 1810, the Julien Dubuque Monument was erected to mark his burial spot. Constructed of Galena limestone mined from a nearby quarry, this monument is still visible to the public at the Mines of Spain.

1898

Iowa’s oldest brewery was founded by the Rhomberg family in what is now known as the Star Brewery Complex. The five-story brick brewhouse was forced to close with the beginning of Prohibition & reopened in 1933 with its repeal. The brewery changed hands several more times before being acquired by the City of Dubuque and renovated in the early 2000s.

1920s

Hotel Julien Dubuque has hosted many famous guests, but none as notorious as Chicago gangster, Al Capone. When things were 'too hot to handle' in Chicago, it is legend that Al Capone would hide out at this historic hotel. He reportedly made use of a nearby underground garage to hide his cars and further conceal his presence in Dubuque.

1989

"Is this heaven? No, it’s Iowa." This phrase got its fame from Academy nominated film, Field of Dreams, primarily shot in Dyersville, Iowa in 1988 and later released in 1989. This iconic movie featured Kevin Costner, Amy Madigan, and James Earl Jones.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY 2021 marks the 35th anniversary of the riverboat, Celebration Belle. This vessel was built in 1986 and sails out of Moline, IL to Dubuque.

10 YEARS OF FILM The Julien Dubuque International Film Festival celebrates 10 years of showing film in the heart of downtown Dubuque.

Dubuque has been proud to be #WhereIowaStarted. Here are some things that have happened since Dubuque got its start.

11

ALONG THE The mighty Mississippi River is the world’s fourth longest river and makes its way through Dubuque’s front yard. With a rich culture tied to the waterway - it is common to see riverboats making their way up and down the river even today.

Port of Dubuque Marina 12

THE HISTORY This area’s heritage is intertwined with the river. It’s one of the reasons this area was ripe for settling. The river’s influence is everywhere, from the landscape carved by the waterway to the industries that thrived along it. Today, you can explore some of that history with a 19th-century belt-driven machine shop that once created motors for racing boats on the Mississippi. The Iowa Marine Engine & Launch Works is a 3,000 square foot exhibit at the Smithsonian affiliated National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium. While visiting, you can experience more of the mighty Mississip’ with interactive displays and aquariums filled with the creatures that call it home.

ALONG THE RIVER

THE BOATS The Riverboat Twilight, based in LeClaire, IA offers guests the chance to stay overnight in Dubuque on one of their weekly two-day cruises, starting in June 2021. This vessel features a calliope that plays music as it departs a community and is recognizable by the locals who can be seen waving to passengers. It also has three floors with indoor and outdoor seating.

Another boat that comes from south of Dubuque, is the Celebration Belle, whose home port is Moline, IL. This ship is the largest non-gaming boat on the upper Mississippi River. This paddle wheeler offers a variety of cruises including a trip from the Quad Cities into Dubuque beginning June 2021. This year marks the 35th anniversary of this boat.

During the late spring through late fall, you can see a variety of riverboats making their way to Dubuque, stopping to explore Iowa’s oldest community. From the American Cruise line boats, Queen of the Mississippi with 84 rooms onboard, to the America and the American Harmony with nearly 100 rooms on board each, these larger vessels offer their guests a full-service experience with dining and lodging provided on board. The largest steamboat ever built also makes port in Dubuque. The American Queen boasts 222 guest rooms and is a sight to see. This ship (418 feet long & 89 feet wide) is so large that the smokestacks that make her easily recognizable fold down to make passage beneath bridges as she makes her way along the river.
