Exodus Winter trips come in many forms, from tranquil snowshoe treks through snowdusted wilderness to hurtling down Olympic bobsled tracks. With an expert guide, you can visit vibrant festivals, traditional, twinkling markets and picturesque cities.

Last year, my own winter adventure took me into the wilds of Swedish Lapland (see page 20). There I was pulled through the deep, thick forest by a pack of determined huskies.

As I walked from the lakeside sauna to the

hotel, there was an element of excitement — the anticipation of seeing the ethereal Northern Lights above our warm and cosy lodge.

It was a theme that ran throughout the trip, the feeling of something unexpected and amazing lying around every corner.

We’re leaders in adventure travel, and our experts have visited more than 131 countries between them, fuelled by an insatiable passion for adventure. With backgrounds in archaeology, mountain guiding and more, they’re sharing their expertise to make selecting your next holiday easy.

GRADING GUIDANCE

N

o matter your experience, ability or fitness level, there’s an Exodus winter adventure for you. The first thing to do is look at the grading of each trip. Each has a level from 1 (leisurely) to 7 (tough). Ski trips have a different grading level as there’s tuition involved. The higher the grade, the less time the leader spends teaching. Instead they’ll take you further, refining your skills. Here, Tom Wilkinson, Exodus Winter Programme manager, shares some useful information to help you book your next adventure…

“When you’re booking an active holiday, we want you to enjoy every last moment. All our activities have a general grading system showing you the type of activity level you can expect like on all of our adventures.

But when it comes to disciplines like cross-country skiing, there’s another element that comes into play — skill. It’s important you judge it right. Even complete beginners will enjoy tours through the winter landscape in their first week on skis. The thrill of becoming independent is hard to beat. With practice, you can cover a lot more ground, but only if the group — as a whole — is ready.

If you’ve never done the activity before, you really won’t make the most of your time away if you choose an activity level that’s too advanced for you. It’s worth considering how fit you are and if you’ve had previous experience.

“We’re always happy to talk through any uncertainties you have,” Tom says.

“A quick chat will usually allow us to help you make sure you’re heading for an experience you’ll remember for all the right reasons.”

GOING SOLO Around half of our guided group customers travel solo. We work hard to make it as easy as possible for them to do so. Our great relationships with partners around the world mean that when there’s a single supplement to pay, it’s as low as possible.

When Exodus customer Jean Luc Loat was in his 20s, he’d spend days walking in the French Alps in winter, drinking in views of snow and clear blue skies.

Now in his 50s, his love for winter remains. When he visited Estonia with Exodus on a cross-country skiing trip, he found himself venturing into the unknown…

“Some people don’t like the winter, but I just like to see each definitive season — they all have something good about them,” says Jean Luc. “I like being outdoors and going on new adventures, so I wanted to find a trip to a country I’d never visited before — that’s why I chose Estonia.”

Jean Luc had been cross-country skiing with Exodus before, more than a decade ago, and he knew he wanted to experience it again.

“On the night we arrived, we got straight into skiing with a few hours that evening. I didn’t expect it, but I’m an active person so I could keep up.

The pace is pretty fast, but I found that this trip suited all sorts of people, from beginners to more advanced skiers. It is quite full on though — you ski in the morning, breaking for lunch before getting back to it.

Estonia is quite a flat country, so there’s not many inclines to tackle. We even did an overnight trip, skiing in the cold, dark night!”

Unusual experiences on the skis was something that Jean Luc had hoped for.

“We travelled the Tartu Ski marathon track and that was the best because it meant going a distance I’d never skied before.

It was a bit of a journey into the unknown because I travelled 25km on my own!

Everything was new — and being on tracks I’d never been on before meant I didn’t know what I’d find at the end.

It was fascinating to see a different culture as well as beautiful sights. The weather was good — always between -15° and 0° — and the snow on the trees made it look like a picture postcard. There were hardly any people around, and it made for a really relaxing trip.”

The new experiences continued, even off the skis.

“Though I spent a lot of time skiing at my own pace, I met some really nice people. Together we visited some brilliant little restaurants in the middle of nowhere.

One in particular didn’t have a menu, the chef just cooked what he fancied cooking on the day with what he had available. It was on a farm, cooking for ten people at a time, and we’d never have found it were it not for our guide’s local knowledge. The food was excellent, and it was a highlight of the trip for sure.”

Another highlight for Jean Luc was seeing, and trying his hand at other sports too.

“We went up to see high ski jumping, which was quite something, with young men soaring through the air! Shooting at the biathlon arena was interesting too, something completely different from the cross-country skiing that we spent so much time involved in.”

Trying out different winter pursuits is something that keeps Jean Luc coming back to Exodus for adventures.

“I want to go on more winter holidays, but with new activities. I’ve done snowshoeing and dogsledding... I like to mix it up, depending on what’s new in the Exodus brochure!

I’ve been on 15 Exodus trips now, because it’s not just about the activity — it’s about the people you meet, the destination, everything.

I know that I’ll have a good experience, that everything will be well organised and I’ll get to see the best of a destination — and not just the tourist areas either.”

And Jean Luc thinks that Estonia has much more to offer outside of the snowy season.

“It’s not easy for me, as a self-employed person, to get time off in the summer to holiday, so winter trips work really well for me. I would like to go back to Estonia in the summer, to hike through the forests and see it in a different light.”

FINLAND Best for wilderness and tranquillity It’s the pristine wilderness near the border of Finland and Russia that you’ll explore on this trip. With no other skiers in sight, a snowmobile cuts fresh loipes just for your group out into the remote wilderness. Spend evenings dining on specially cooked dishes, relaxing in the sauna and looking out for the Northern Lights.

GERMANY Best for discovery Nestled deep within the Black Forest lie quaint villages, each with its own unique culture to be uncovered. The world in winter is so much more than a stark canvas. Pristine snow, sky blue-tinged ice and the twinkle of the golden sun as it reflects off steely waters may make up part of the palette, but there’s a spectrum of adventures to pursue. Here we’ll paint a picture of a few favourites...

TRANSYLVANIA Best for myths and legends Visiting snow-dusted Transylvania is like being immersed in a fairytale. In woodlands shadowed by the Carpathian Mountains lie ancient villages, Saxon citadels and UNESCO World Heritage Sites so well preserved they could be Hollywood movie sets.

The first we visit is the walled 12th century Saxon citadel Sibiu. Once rich and powerful, it retains a feeling of grandeur, with open squares, towers and bastions transporting us back in time. We wander past ornate churches in the cobbled streets of Sighisoara, one of the best-preserved ancient cities on the continent, and stop for a traditional lunch at a farmer’s house in the fascinating village of Viscri. On our final day, we visit the imposing towers and turrets of Bran Castle, chosen by Bram Stoker as the mythical home of Dracula...

Colours of Winter

CHINA Best for colourful culture Each winter, as the sun sets early, kaleidoscopic constructions and prismatic sculptures reach into the cold night sky over Harbin.

Intricately crafted, they’re a fleeting moment of brilliance, formed of snow and ice and illuminated in colour. Situated in north east China’s Heilongjiang province, the extraordinary festival brings visitors (and talented sculptors) together to marvel at these feats of artistry.

As well as enjoying China’s freshly-carved sculptures, we take some time to see some much older work on this trip too, visiting the impressive Terracotta Army in Xi’an.

Harbin may be the most colourful highlight on this adventure, but no trip to China would be complete without a journey along the Great Wall. We visit Mutiyanu, one of the most well-preserved stretches, on this adventure.

BOSNIA & HERZEGOVINA Best for illustrious history Home to the 1984 Winter Olympics, Sarajevo is a blend of fine countryside and cool capital city.

On this trip, we walk and snowshoe on the Bjelasnica, Visocica and Igman mountains, through their beautiful forests and along crystal-clear streams to frozen waterfalls and snowcapped summits.

It’s the stories told in this region that remind us of its remarkable history. As well as enjoying freshly cooked meals with those who call the mountains home, we also head down to spend time immersed in the cultural and architectural tapestry of Sarajevo, with its vibrant mix of Ottoman, Yugoslav and Austro-Hungarian architecture.

From there we head up to the peak of Trebevic Olympic Mountain, reflecting on history as we overlook the city and its neighbouring towns and villages.

RUSSIA Best for vibrant architecture Rising like a bonfire into the sky, St Basil’s cathedral is one of Russia’s most remarkable sights. The multicoloured icon stands beside the fiery Kremlin in Moscow’s Red Square, and it’s there that you’ll begin a tour of three of the country’s grandest cities. With your expert guide, you’ll learn of Russia’s equally colourful history, travelling to Novgorod via sleeper train to see the monuments that bring the stories to life.

While a visit to Pushkin to see the opulent Catherine Palace gives some insight into the finer sides of life in Russia, the extravagance of St Petersburg — our final destination — can’t be competed with. It’s home to some of the most impressive art and architecture in Europe.

The Nordics are much more than land masses on a map. Finland, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Aaland and the Faroe Islands can all be filed under the Nordic banner, but what binds them far transcends the geographical — it’s a cultural identity.

While Nordic winter trips will introduce you to Arctic temperatures well into minus figures, you’ll find that life continues largely unaffected. Frozen waters and snow-dusted forests transform into winter playgrounds for ice fishing and dogsledding, and walking trails are taken on with fresh gusto by those with snowshoes and a thirst for adventure.

The fresh, clean air and active lifestyle means visits feel just as good for the body as they do for the mind and soul.

Exodus Winter Programme Manager Tom Wilkinson has experienced it all, travelling the breadth of the region by cross-country skis, snowmobile and more. Even in subzero temperatures, he’s been inspired by those he meets along the way, and how they face life head on in such different conditions to home.

“Geographically, Sweden, Finland and Norway are joined together in the Arctic Circle, so there’s a natural crossover in culture” says Tom. “The Sami people of Lapland wouldn’t have concerned themselves with borders, and so cultures are much more defined in the south than they are in the north.

None of the Nordic countries are heavily populated, so when you go out into the wilderness, you really are away from it all in vast stretches of land.

Everything feels so well thought out and well planned when the weather is extreme, and there’s a ‘can do’ attitude among the people that live and work there.

There’s just a very practical approach to life, which helps when conditions are tougher.

They really do make the most of everything.”

Despite these countries not being renowned for it, that includes the food, Tom explains.

“It’s always excellent! Vegetarians and those with dietary requirements never have any problem being catered to, as there’s great produce at the accommodation we choose.

It’s always well cooked, locally sourced, wellpresented food. It’s simple and really well done, like everything!”

Tom believes this simple and effective attitude stems from the necessity to flourish under harsh conditions.

“Iceland really changed during the Second World War. The allies set up bases there, which catapulted those that lived there into a more modern time with the introduction of new technologies,” he says. “Now they use technology to make life much easier, such as the development of geothermal heating.

f your curiosity (and bucket list) has grown exponentially from learning more about The Nordics, then the Swedish Lapland Activity Week trip grants plenty of winter wishes.

From our base at Pine Bay Lodge — a traditional red cottage-style boutique hotel that we have exclusive use of — you’ll discover much more than the picture perfect snow-covered wilderness that this Arctic corner of the country is renowned for.

Our Winter Programme Manager Tom Wilkinson certainly did when he headed out to the lodge, situated on the shores of the Luleå Archipelago.

there and enjoy it. You only need to take your warm clothes as all the specialist equipment that you need is provided.”

Ice fishing, a snowshoe hike across the frozen sea on the hunt for the mystical Northern Lights and a dedicated husky safari through the forest are on the agenda, led by destination experts determined to give you the best possible experience.

“The dogsledding is run by specialists, and it really is a way of life for them,” Tom says. “We went with a family who took care of around 40 dogs. They old us how they’d first taken their young son on a sled when he was six months old, wrapping him up in blankets and allowing him to be rocked to sleep!”

Despite the action, Tom also found himself unwinding in the crisp, fresh air.

“We spent mornings taking part in activities, so afternoons were spent relaxing and reading a book before enjoying the sauna and hot tub down by the lake. One night we ate dinner in a remote Aurora hideaway — with a roaring fire, candles and tealights — it was magical!”

While cloud cover scuppered Tom’s chances of seeing the Northern Lights, it didn’t detract from the trip — the tour leaders made sure of that.“One of our guides told us that he used to do ‘a little more’ in the way of out outdoor winter pursuits, cutting back slightly because of a hip injury. It wasn’t until later that we discovered he didn’t do ‘a little more’, he competed for the Swedish national team at mogul skiing! Who better to introduce us to a Swedish winter?

The snowmobiling was my biggest highlight — travelling over the frozen sea with a backdrop of giant shards of pack ice was incredible.

But the unplanned things mattered, too.

One afternoon, we pulled ice from the frozen lake and built an ice shelter. It was a special, spontaneous moment!”

And they’re the moments that Tom won’t forget.

“Now when I see snow-covered trees, I feel excited. I’ll be so happy to get back into that white, pristine winter!”

I spend doing this job is my ‘favourite’, whether it’s standing on a high mountain with a monumental view, or walking a moderate level route that I’ve done many times before.”

“I’ve had the chance to support local charitable organisations through work and travel and been fortunate to help build schools in Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, Borneo, Mongolia and Ethiopia.

I’ve also taught English in Madagascar, India, Nepal and South America.”

The Dolomites’ Alta Pusteria is a great destination for both summer and winter. Both seasons offer a variety of activities, and in summer it’s famous among trekkers and rock climbers. But in winter, local villages take on a magical winter wonderland feeling. The Dolomiti Superski area might attract a lot of downhill skiers, but there are many more activities to enjoy here. Snowshoes take you to parts of the mountains that very few other people witness.

Without the need for special tracks or lifts, you’ll get to areas where you’re likely to be the only person around, and enjoy sweeping views that few others get to see.

And the best bit? You don’t need any previous experience, although you do need a reasonable level of fitness.

“It was a great time of year to go as it was lovely and warm without being too hot, just as it was getting wintery at home. We were able to swim in the sea!

It was fascinating to see how ordinary people lived in the countryside, walking through tiny villages and joining locals for a coffee or glass of lemon granita.”

This transported Annabel far from the frosts of home. As did a walk to the smoking mouth of fiery Mount Vesuvius.

CHOOSING YOUR ACTIVITY LEVEL CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING GRADES With cross-country, it’s about experience — time on the skis — that counts. Obviously, a decent level of fitness is important too. Our aim is to encourage groups of similarly experienced travellers to get the most out of their time on the snow.

Grade 1 — Beginners We start with the basics, including how to stop using the snowplough technique and how to turn. You will be on skis for at least 5-6 hours a day with a focus on tuition, getting comfortable on skis and building towards longer tours through the winter landscape.

Grade 2 — Improvers Ideal for those who 7 8 9 3-5 have enjoyed at least one Grade 1 holiday and grasped the basics. They offer tuition to refresh and9improve technique and typically will ski a little 3-5 further over more varied terrain.

Grade 3 — Intermediates For those looking to push on, tackle some slightly steeper terrain and cover more ground each day. Typical groups will have a few weeks skiing behind them, be very comfortable with the basics and happy on longer day tours.

Grade 4 — Advanced If you can tackle ‘ups and downs’ competently, manage a controlled snowplough descent, and if you want to ski at a lively pace. You should also be able to get up swiftly and easily by yourself after a fall. The mix of track and off-track skiing varies.

Grade 5 — Challenging Experienced, very proficient skiers looking for long, steep ascents and descents, including off-track skiing over variable snow. Good fitness, stamina and sound and controlled technique is required.

Our cross-country skating levels have two options: Beginners: recommended for those who’ve tried classic cross-country skiing, and are ready to try this faster style, covering 10 -15 km a day Intermediate: recommended for those who’ve already mastered the basics of the skating style and are looking at covering over 15km a day.

More challenging skiing, again on the extensive tracks at Les Estanyols, including the La Tête circuit. We will also head for the Col de la Llose at an altitude of 1861m where you can ski along a broad ridge with open views to the Mediterranean Sea. It is also possible to make use of further circuits around the Col de la Llose.

Depending on which week you have chosen (beginner, intermediate or mixed ability skiing), the local snow conditions and group ability, your leader will soon have you skiing up and down the beautiful Leutasch Valley.

You'll head towards Scharnitz by the German border, or up to the Olympic village of Seefeld, discovering a number of the surrounding Tyrolean villages. In the afternoons you have the option to stay and explore, or to head back to the hotel in time for a fine spread of afternoon snacks, coffee and cake. We have left one day free for you to explore independently or to try one of the many other activities available locally.

Each day our leader chooses routes according to the grade and snow conditions. Many kilometres of easy track along the valleys offer wonderful options for beginners and improvers. For the more advanced skiers, there are more challenging routes, such as the loipe leading to Cortina D’Ampezzo, which takes you under the imposing Tre Cime di Lavaredo.

KEY BOOKING INFORMATION Having chosen the holiday you are interested in, below is some information which you may find useful in relation to your booking and holiday. Full terms and conditions can be found at: www.exodus. co.uk/about-exodus/exodus-bookingconditions.

1. Refer to the Trip Notes The Trip Notes form part of our contract with you and they contain the most up-to-date information about the holiday, including details about the itinerary, inclusions and exclusions. Please download and take the latest version of the Trip Notes with you on your holiday.

2. About the trip Is this trip for you?

We aim to provide detailed and accurate information in our documentation so that clients can assess their own suitability and fitness for a specific trip. We ask that you satisfy yourself prior to booking that you are able to complete the itinerary as described in the Trip Notes. All our trips feature Activity Level icons as guides to the type of itinerary and the level of challenge the trip will involve.

An explanation of each Activity Level can be found at www.exodus.co.uk/activity-levels . Please let your sales consultant know during the booking process if you have concerns and queries about any aspects of the itinerary.

Participation We ask our clients to always abide by the authority of the tour leader. There is an agreement in place between Exodus and our tour leaders, allowing them to exclude any client from part or all of a trip if it unfortunately becomes apparent that they cannot manage particular elements of a trip or is likely to put either them self or other people at risk. It is, however, not a decision that is reached lightly or that is made frequently.

Pre-existing medical conditions We ask you to let us know of any pre-existing conditions, illnesses, disabilities or recent surgeries which may affect your safety or other people’s enjoyment of the holiday.

Please email CustomerServices@exodus.co.uk to make us aware of any pre-existing medical conditions. Our Trip Notes provide information on whether a particular holiday is considered to be suitable for a person with reduced mobility. There is no upper age limit on our tours, but as most holidays are quite active we may ask clients over the age of 80 a number of questions about their health and fitness. We also require you to advise us of any dietary requirements in advance of a tour.

Accommodation Our prices are based on twin-share accommodation which means that if you book on your own, we will arrange for you to share with a person of the same sex.

We ask you to satisfy yourself that you do not have any conditions or preferences which may preclude you from sharing a room, and that you speak to your sales consultant if you would like to enquire about a single supplement.

Key information to help you prepare Important trip documentation will be provided during the booking process and prior to your holiday. If you have any queries or notice any inaccuracies, please contact Exodus as soon as possible.

We are able to provide basic advice to clients regarding passports and visa requirements, but you should check with the appropriate embassy, consulate or the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office for the exact requirements for your chosen tour and date of travel.

British nationals require a full passport which is valid for six months after the date of your scheduled return home.

The Trip Notes for each holiday provide more detailed information on visa requirements.

We recommend that you contact your Medical Professional or a Travel Health Clinic for information about vaccinations or specific health risks in the area to which you are travelling. Please see the Practical For full booking conditions please visit exodus.co.uk

If you are from an EU member state and are travelling within Europe, you should enquire about the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC); this gives a certain degree of free medical care in many European countries but should not be considered a substitute for travel insurance.

The Trip Notes also include information about packing suggestions and essential items that we recommend you bring on your holiday.

Risks of adventure travel Whilst we ensure that all activities are operated to the local legal standard and that risk assessments are carried out annually, many of our holidays do carry an element of risk.

On many of our tours, the areas are remote and events far less predictable than on a conventional holiday.

Health, safety and operational standards, particularly of hotels and transport, are often not up to the levels we experience at home. We require that all the properties and transport we use comply fully with local regulations, but we do not guarantee the same standards as in your home country. If you choose to travel on this type of holiday, you must be prepared to accept that this is all part of the experience.

Adverse weather conditions, political situations and a host of other uncontrollable factors can mean a change in itinerary. Outdoor activities are weather dependent to an extent and some can become dangerous in certain conditions. If the leader feels there is any heightened level of risk involved in an activity, they may amend or cancel it as they see fit. It is unlikely that an itinerary would be substantially altered, but if changes are necessary, we will make the best possible alternative arrangements which maintain the integrity of the original itinerary. We will do everything we can to minimise the effect, but we cannot be held responsible for the impact of changes outside our control.

Crime and other security risks exist in all countries and whilst travelling in a group is a safeguard, it is not a guarantee of safety. We will take all reasonable care of you and expect that you will take sensible precautions yourself.

3. Booking on a Flight Inclusive or Land Only Basis Exodus holidays can be booked on a Land Only basis or with international flights. When booking on a Flight Inclusive basis, Exodus complies with our responsibilities under the ATOL regime. For all packages (Flight Inclusive or not) we comply with the Package Travel and Linked Travel Regulations 2018. In the event of a significant change to travel plans by an airline, we are responsible for ensuring that you can complete your journeys in a reasonable timeframe and without additional cost to yourself. Please see point 6 for more information on the Package Travel Regulations.

Flight costs and supplements Flight Inclusive prices include return flights from a London airport and UK departure tax. Our Flight Inclusive trip prices include a base price for the flights, however this is always subject to availability at the time of booking as airfares are outside of our control. Where the cost of flights is higher than this base price, a flight supplement may be applicable; your sales consultant will be able to advise you if this is the case.

Travel insurance It is an essential condition of joining an Exodus trip that you have an adequate and valid travel insurance policy for the full duration of your trip to cover the cost of medical treatment, cancellation and curtailment, and the activities included in the holiday (including the maximum altitude reached). We recommend that you take out insurance as soon as your booking is confirmed.

5. Payment, cancellations and changes Unless stated otherwise during the booking process or in the full terms and conditions, the following applies: Deposit You will be asked to pay a deposit at the time of booking of at least 10% per person of your selected travel arrangements (minimum ÂŁ150 per person or equivalent).

You may also be required to pay on booking for any non-transferable and non-refundable items; your sales consultant will advise you of this during the booking process.

Final balance We will invoice you for the remainder of the cost of your holiday, which must be paid prior to 56 days before departure. In certain cases, we may request full payment more than 56 days before departure where, for example, airlines require full payment on booking.

Making changes to your trip Please contact Exodus as soon possible if you wish to make a change to your existing booking, wish to change to a different tour or wish to change departure date.

We will always endeavour to assist with the requested change, but this is subject to availability and payment may need to be made for non-refundable costs (for example from airlines) and other fees may also be applicable.

Cancellation conditions You may cancel your tour at any time by providing written communication from the lead booker. As we start to incur costs from the time the contract is confirmed we will retain your deposit and will apply other cancellation charges as shown below. Please note, however, that for certain travel arrangements the cancellation charge may be higher than those shown; please ask your sales consultant for full details of cancellation charges at time of booking.

If we change or cancel your booking We plan the arrangements for your tour many months in advance and may occasionally have to make changes, most of which are minor.

When a major change (as outlined in the full terms and conditions on our website) occurs, you will have the choice of either: a) accepting the change; or b) accepting a replacement tour from us of equivalent or similar standard and price (at the date of the change), if we are able to offer you one; or c) cancelling your tour, in which case you shall receive a full refund of all monies paid.

Most of our trips are group holidays and require a certain number of participants to operate; we include details of normal group sizes in the Trip Notes and on

our website. In the unlikely event that a trip does not reach the normal minimum, we may be forced to cancel the tour; a decision will be made as early as possible and not later than four weeks before departure. We reserve the right to confirm trips on numbers lower than the minimum indicated and occasionally we may exceed the normal maximum. If at the time of booking your trip is not guaranteed, we strongly recommend that you do not make any non-refundable or nonchangeable travel arrangements.

ATOL protection All the flights and Flight Inclusive holidays in this brochure are financially protected by the ATOL scheme. When you pay you will be supplied with an ATOL Certificate.

Please ask for it and check to ensure that everything you booked (flights, hotels and other services) is listed on it.
