DID YOU KNOW...?

That Sweden is an incredibly green country? A total of 57% of the land area is covered by forests, which is equivalent to the area of the whole of Great Britain

The Swedes value their extensive forests and regard them as a great gift from Mother Earth. On weekends, many people seek out the tranquillity of nature.

Enjoyment requires time and mindfulness

WILDCAMPing With DANO

Wild camping is a right in Sweden as long as you keep nature intact; this is also known as ‘Allemansrätten’. So every day you can search for the perfect place to both spend the night in peace and quiet and prepare your food

It's not always easy to see from a distance whether a place is suitable for camping That's why, in collaboration with the nature conservation organisation DANO, we recommend a shelter to stay in every night With more than 100 shelters along the routes, you are guaranteed a wonderful campsite every night. You can easily find them in the Canoe Trip app.

The shelters range from hidden spots in the forest to private islands in the middle of the lake where you can spend the night and make a cosy campfire

WHY SWEDEN?

In Sweden, you can enjoy life to the fullest all year round The country is not only known for its crispbread and cinnamon buns but also for its rich history, stunning nature, and countless historical sites to explore

Välkommen till Sverige!

Sweden is the largest country in Scandinavia, which also includes Denmark, Norway, and Finland And the best part? It's brimming with nature reserves The country is mostly covered in vast, fairytale-like forests and boasts nearly 100,000 lakes

During your canoe trip, you’ll constantly be amazed by breathtaking views Surrounded by tranquil waters, idyllic landscapes, and the most stunning sunrises and sunsets, it’s impossible not to find peace and serenity.

sweden as a canoeing destination

Canoeing is one of the most popular outdoor holiday activities today and has captured the hearts of adventurers all over the world. The attraction lies in the perfect combination of tranquillity and excitement. Make your way through tranquil lakes, winding rivers and scenic waterways while enjoying the physical challenge.

This activity offers a unique connection to nature and the people around you Whether it's the rhythmic sound of the paddles, the gentle lapping of the water or the excitement of discovering hidden treasures along the way, canoeing offers an unrivalled connection to the environment

What's more, spending time together in a boat fosters a sense of friendship, endless conversation and the joy of being together. This makes it the ideal choice for couples and friends looking for both relaxation and shared adventure. Canoeing embodies the essence of a refreshing holiday, where every paddle stroke takes explorers right into the heart of nature's wonders

Canadian Canoes

During your adventure on the Swedish lakes, you will use a traditional Canadian canoe It is very sturdy and therefore an absolute favourite for canoe trips Equipped with 2 benches, the canoe offers enough space for 2 people, including luggage and food, so you can easily spend a week in it. Of course, it is important not to take too much with you, as even such a canoe has its limits. Minimalism is key!

Here are some facts about the canoe itself:

Material: Aluminium

Weight: 38 kg

Length: 525 cm

Width: 90 cm

Capacity: 400kg

Did you know that these canoes are absolutely seaworthy and unsinkable? There are usually two floats in the boat - one at the bow and one at the stern. These prevent the canoe from sinking when tipping over in rough water. Still, you have to be careful not to wobble too much in waves, as getting wet can still happen.

Flora V Ä R M L A N D

Blueberries

One of the best known and most easily recognisable berries in Swedish forests is the bilberry. This shrub covers almost 20% of Sweden's total land area. Not only do we like to eat them, but so do the animals around us For many of them, it is one of the most important sources of food Blueberries are rich in antioxidants and make an excellent snack when canoeing.

CRAnberries

Lingonberries are known for their detoxifying properties This berry is also easy to find in the Swedish countryside during your canoe trip. They taste slightly more sour than blueberries, but are great for sauces! If the dish accidentally has too much salt, just add a few of these berries and the strong flavour will be softened. This berry is rich in vitamin C and very effective for digestion.

Chanterelles

Värmland is a paradise for mushroom pickers In the summer months, even as early as midJune, this is also a frequent weekend activity for the locals. The right mushroom can be a real flavour enhancer in many dishes. Chanterelles grow in large numbers in hidden places in the forest They can be found together with certain tree species This is why they are favoured in the immediate vicinity of spruce, fir, copper beech and pine trees.

Pine tips

There is no shortage of pine trees in the Swedish forests Did you know that there is a difference between pines and firs? A fir has long, soft needles that are arranged in groups on the branch A spruce has short, hard needles that hang loosely on the branch You can make delicious tea from pine needles or tips. Put a small handful of needles in a mug and pour hot water over them. Leave to infuse for a while and your tea is ready

If you are a beginner, you should definitely take an experienced mushroom and berry picker with you on your search so that you don't confuse different berries and mushrooms or keep your hands off them altogether. There are also some pocket- and travelling-friendly books which can also be interesting reading without collecting

DID

YOU KNOW?

Blåbär, Tranbär & Co

Probably the most popular berries in Sweden are the blåbär (blueberries) and tranbär (lingonberries). These are widespread throughout Sweden and cover around 17% of the country's surface area. Not much needs to be said about them, everyone knows the little blue berries. Thanks to the Everyman's Right, anyone can pick the berries

Fauna

MOOSe

In Sweden you will of course find one of the most famous animals in Scandinavia: the moose! With a maximum shoulder height of 2 30 metres, the moose is the largest deer species in the world! The male bull is slightly larger than the female cow and also has antlers on its head antlers on his head, which he even loses after the rutting season But don't worry, this doesn't hurt him at all and also lightens his weight - up to 27kg to be precise!

forest dwellers

You may come across some forest dwellers during your canoe trip. You have the best chance of seeing squirrels, mice and perhaps a cheeky fox Of course, these are not the only woodland creatures that live in the extensive forests Did you know that there are even lynxes, wolves and bears in Värmland? However, the likelihood of you seeing them is very low They prefer to stay far away from humans!

Birds

All bird lovers will be delighted in Sweden, as there are plenty of special bird species that can be observed here Sweden has a total of around 590 species of birds, including some rarities During quiet observations, you can even catch sight of golden eagles, as they have a remarkable distribution and even a considerable wingspan of around two metres

Fish

The lakes in Sweden are perfect for fishing. Here, fishing enthusiasts can find fish species such as pike, perch, zander and trout, especially in the smaller lakes But beware: a fishing licence is required for fishing, which can be purchased on site. This gives you permission to fish and you don't need to worry about controls Of course, everyman's rights must also be respected here Privately set nets, fish traps and fish traps must not be touched.

DID YOU KNOW?

There are white moose in the west of Sweden!

Anyone who catches sight of a white moose is very lucky, as they are particularly rare. Out of 400,000 moose in the whole of Sweden, 100 white ones live in the western region of Sweden. Seeing a moose in its natural and immediate environment - especially a white one - is a very special and unforgettable moment for many people

CLIMATE

The weather

Sweden is not known for its sunny weather, but it is precisely because of the climate that this destination is becoming increasingly popular Because the summers here are not as hot as in the south of Europe, it is a wonderful place to spend time.

However, pay attention to all kinds of weather during your trip, as it can change suddenly A warm, sunny day can turn into cold and rain So make sure you have warm, waterproof clothing as well as airy pieces.

BEst time to travel

The best months for travelling to Sweden are May to September During this period, you have the best chance of beautiful weather and sunny days. The most beautiful flowers bloom at the beginning of summer, in July and August you can enjoy the abundance of blueberries, and towards the end of summer you can find delicious chanterelles in the forests

DId you know?

Sweden has on average more hours of sunshine and less rainfall in summer than Germany?

Large mountain ranges in Norway protect Sweden from bad weather. Depressed areas and precipitation are kept out, while heat is blown directly towards Sweden

Mosquitoes

As you are constantly near water during this trip, mosquitoes are an unavoidable guest in and around the tent But don't worry, the mosquito season is pretty short: you'll encounter them mainly in July and August Fortunately, there will be far fewer of them in a dry summer, so hope for little rain!

In any case, protect yourself well from mosquitoes by always taking insect repellent with Deet with you. We also recommend this outside the mosquito season. If you sit outside your tent in the evening and enjoy the starry sky, wear long clothing and high socks This will minimise the risk of being bitten

Should you nevertheless find yourself in a (non-lifethreatening) emergency, the ranger is always available to help you. Simply press the SOS button in our app to let the ranger know that you need help They will then contact you as soon as possible

emergency situation

Although the likelihood of an emergency is very low and we have never been confronted with a life-threatening situation, this possibility does of course exist Just as you are exposed to the risk of an accident at home, this can also happen on holiday You can use the SOS Alarm app to call the local emergency services directly. Because you call via the app, they can immediately see where you are and therefore easily send help to the right place. To be on the safe side, download this app before you travel to Sweden

By travelling in a more responsible way, you can make the world an even more beautiful place.

As we explore this beautiful world, we inevitably have an impact on the environment we admire.

At The Canoe Trip, we want to take our responsibility and minimise our negative impact as much as possible We achieve this by launching initiatives through which both travellers and ourselves give something back to nature and communities

As CO2 emissions from transport undoubtedly have the greatest impact, we are focussing primarily on different transport options Travelling by bus has a much smaller impact than flying. Travelling by car? Then we recommend carpooling. In addition, we limit the number of destinations that can only be reached by plane and always inform you about the impact of your choice.

As soon as you book a trip, you can choose to make a contribution to a climate project to offset the CO2 emissions of your transport

This is done in collaboration with GreenTripper, an organisation that independently calculates the emissions of our trips and reinvests the equivalent of these emissions in the protection of the rainforest, local wildlife and in the education of the local population in sustainable agriculture and ecotourism through its nature conservation and wildlife project Wildlife Cambodia.

This is a certified project, as you can see from the official CO2 certificate you will receive after your trip

For the limited impact that our trips still have locally, we also make an additional contribution to the same climate project.

Make your contribution to a certified climate project via Greentripper

The canoe trip is a truly special and adventurous experience.

‘The vagaries of Swedish nature can mess up your route planning, but that's what makes you learn to live in the moment and in the here and now again The surroundings are breathtaking and it's amazing how quickly your body and mind regain complete peace and serenity by reconnecting with nature Relaxing! Every day is like a gift for you ’

- Canoeist Ellen

Great experience!

‘That was great! A week on the water and in the forest, paddling for hours in a canoe I loved it! The route wasn't too challenging for us, depending on the weather The equipment from Kanu Trip was fine, but if you are more experienced in (wild) camping, bring your own pans and a cooker. The good thing about Kanu Trip was that you have someone in the background in case something goes wrong ’

- Canoeist Robert

Lees meer erience. Our ranger and a hearty enjoyed our adventurous trip. I would definitely do it again (with a dog or later with the children).’
