This little house will shelter my father and mother i n t h e i r o l d a ge, a f ter a l ife of h a rd work.

With the plan in our pockets we spent a long time looking for a site. After considering several, one day we discovered the right one from the top of a hill (1923). こ の 小さな 家 は 、長 年 に わ たって 働 き 続 け た 私 の 両 親 の 老 後 の 安らぎ の 日日 を想 定したものである。 ポ ケ ット に 図 面 を 入 れ て 、長 い 間 敷 地 を 探 し 歩 い た 。いくつ か の 候 補 地 を 検 討 し た が 、あ る 日 、丘 の 上 か らまさ に 思 い 通 り の 敷 地 を 見 つ け 出 し た 。

The window eleven meters in length gives it style!

The part played by the window is an innovation, for it becomes the main feature, the chief attraction in the house. この長さ 11m の窓は、 この家にある種の典雅さを与えている。 これは、窓というものが担いうる役割に対するひとつの革新であろう。 この窓は、 この家を構成する基本要素となり、 この家の主役になっている。

Let’s go to the garden. 庭に出てみよう。

Through the garden door, then three steps and one reaches the garden loggia. The roof of the loggia rests on a pillar considering of a metal tube six centimetres in diameter.

1本の細い円柱が軒先を支えている。 この円柱と古い護岸壁とがつくる見え隠れは、 この場所にこのうえない効果をもたらす。 つまり、 それらが直角に交差して見えることが、 ちょうど湖面と山並みのそれに連携するように。

The outer wall is here four meters in length.

Suddenly the wall comes to an end and the spectacle is revealed: light, space, the lake and the mountains.

The trick has been played! 突然、 壁は途絶え、 目の覚めるような風景が現れる。光、 空間、 この湖とあの山々が…… ホラ、 私の思惑通りのすばらしさだ！

The object of the wall seen here is to block off the view to the north and east, partly

to

the

south,

and

to

the

west;

for

the

ever-present

and overpowering scenery on all sides has a tiring effect in the long run.

Have you noticed that under such conditions one no longer „sees“?

To lend significance to the scenery one has to restrict it and give it proportion; the

view

at

certain

must

be

strategic

blocked points

and

by

walls

there

which

permit

an

are

only

pierced

unhindered

view.

囲い壁の存在理由は、北から東にかけて、 さらに部分的に南から西にかけて視界を閉ざすためである。 四方八方に蔓延する景色というものは圧倒的で、焦点を欠き、長い間にはかえって退屈なものになってしまう。

こ の ような 状 況 で は 、もは や 私 たち は 風 景 を 眺 める ことが できな い の で はなか ろうか 。 景色を望むには、 むしろそれを限定しなければならない。思い切った判断によって選別しなければならないのだ。 すなわち 、まず 壁を建 てることによって 視 界を遮り、つぎに 連らなる壁 面を要 所 要 所 取り払 い 、 そこに 水 平 線 の 広 がりを求 めるのである。
