WELCOME TO ROMANIA! Here are some interesting facts about our country, the host of the Young Round Square European Regional Conference: Defileul DunĂrii Or, as it is locally known, “Clisura Dunării”, is situated on the Danube river and is the biggest in Europe.

ScĂriŞoara Cave Being situated in Apuseni Mountains at a distance of 40 km away from Câmpeni city, in the NW of Alba county, this is one of the biggest ice caves in Romania (the second largest underground glacier in the world). The Blue Lake It is situated within Baia Sprie city and it is declared as a very important natural monument in Maramureş County. Its uniqueness is due to the fact that its coulour changes depending on the light, or the people who swim there. The Black Church The Black Church is situated in Braşov city, and it has the biggest pipe organ in Europe, consisting of 4000 pipes and the biggest bell in Romania(6.3 tones).
The first city which used electricty to light the streets Timişoara was the first city in Europe where the electric street lighting took place as we know it today.

CLUJ-NAPOCA Cluj-Napoca, as capital of historical region Transylvania, is one of the most visited cities in Romania. The city, with 324,576 people, is very pleasant, and it is certainly a great experience for those who want to see urban Transylvanian life at its best. Along with fine dining, excellent cultural activities, a wonderful historical legacy and a great atmosphere, the city will certainly not disappoint those who add it to their travel itinerary. This western city in the region of Transylvania traces its origins back to the Dacian settlement of Napuca in the 2-nd century A.D. After the Roman takeover of Dacia, it was renamed Napoca and in 124 A.D., received the rank of “municipium”. UNION SQUARE Featuring baroque, gothic, Renaissance and neoclassical buildings, the square allows for quick access to St. Michael’s Church and the Banffy Palace. Flanking the church on the south side is a 1902 equestrian statue of the 15th century ruler, Matei Corvin. Cluj National Museum of Art The 22 halls of the Banffy Palace display sculptures, graphics, weapons, furniture, carpets, and paintings by famous Romanian artists such as Nicolae Grigorescu, Theodor Aman and Theodor Pallady.
Emil Racoviţă’s 145th birthday was celebrated through a Google Doodle in 2013.
Emil RacoviŢĂ Speleology Institute & Museum The Emil Racoviţă Speleology Museum is the only one of its kind in Europe. The museum displays the fascinating collection of renowned Romanian biologist, Emil Racoviţă (1868-1947), who set up the Romanian Speleology Institute in 1920. Here, you can admire some of the discoveries made by Racoviţă in the spectacular caves of Romania, including different types of rocks which preserve the traces of animals that died thousands of years ago.
Romanian Emil Racoviţă was a famous scientist, explorer and biologist, the founder of bio-speleology. He was elected academician and president of the Romanian Academy and, at only 25, he was also elected member of the Zoological Society of France. He was also the first Romanian to go on a scientific research expedition to the Antarctic, being the first biologist in the world to actually study the arctic life. A rapidly growing school, which almost tripled its student body in the last years thanks to its excellent reputation, Transylvania College, The Cambridge International School in Cluj offers a unique multicultural learning environment in Romania; the children enrolled here represent 26 nations, from 6 continents. With a history of 20 years (the first kindergarten class started in 1993), Transylvania College was founded by the Baciu family: Simona, who at that time was a teacher in a Romanian state school and Dan, a doctor. The family is still actively involved in the running of the school and the parents who choose to educate their children here appreciate the fact that they benefit from an education based on values, being encouraged to strive for excellence, to respect diversity, to be creative and responsible. In addition to receiving the best education, in a state-of-the-art campus that allows them access to the latest technology, the children who study here are prepared to embrace life with all its opportunities and challenges. After a successful inspection, in 2013, from the UK’s Department for Education, the school received British School Overseas (BSO) status, in addition to being an Accredited Member of COBIS and a Global Member of Round Square. As of 2015 Transylvania College is under the Royal Patronage of HRH Crown Princess Margareta of Romania. The school offers a Romanian Kindergarten from age two, then a choice between two parallel lines to the high school: the Romanian Primary school with the Romanian curriculum plus additional English from Grades 1 to 8, or the International Line with a British curriculum from Reception to Year 9. From Year 10 Transylvania College offers IGCSE and A level courses and is the only Cambridge-accredited school in the area. 6

It is also the only international boarding school in the country. The school’s first boarding facility opened its doors in September 2013 and is already at full capacity. A second boarding house opened in January 2014, the school offering placement for boys and girls aged from 13 years. The school’s track of excellence includes many national (“School of the Year in Romania”) and international awards (3 first prizes in the COBIS Young Scientist Film Awards; “The Diana Award”, given two years in a row to two extraordinary young students; 3 prizes in the international competition launched by the European Space Agency and the best Cambridge exam scores in the country.

Mountain Baisoara info CampS | BĂIŞOARA Băişoara is a village in Cluj County, Romania. It is composed of nine villages: Băişoara, Frăsinet, Moara de Pădure, Muntele Băişorii, Muntele Bocului, Muntele Cacovei, Muntele Filii, Muntele Săcelului and Săcel. Since 2000, following important improvements of the local infrastructure it was officially declared a winter sports resort. According to the census from 2002 there was a total population of 2,330 people living in this town. Of this population, 97.51% are ethnic Romanians, 1.67% ethnic Romani and 0.72% are ethnic Hungarians.
