Global Ambition without End

Plights and Aspirations

VLAD CIURDAR

Supporting Teacher

I found out about Transylvania Insights from Mr Vlad during my History lesson. At first it started with Ioan, Mr Vlad and myself, but our team extended pretty fast. I soon became Deputy Director mainly focusing on Human Resources and management. I always enjoyed writing essays and articles but now it was something different. The final product will actually be a small part of a magazine, something that people read and form opinions upon. This project ,which I believe will turn out to be something really special, became a hobby, something I do with pleasure. I am glad and proud to be part of this team, and filled with joy to see that the first edition of this newspaper that could outlast everyone one us has its start. I can not wait to see what the future holds for us.

“As is language a manifestation of a people's culture, plight and origin, the same can be said for Transylvania Insights. The need to give the students in our community a platform for expression and another opportunity to develop their skills should be a #1 priority for every school, as such practical opportunities harness the ambition of our young citizens. This project was done with quality guiding our moral compasses, in which we created such innovation not for glory or to add another accolade to our “belt”, but to truly help form the future elite of this nation and continent. The team with which I worked with proved their desire to better the cause of intellectualism, while also remaining realistic of their surroundings. It was hard, stressful and sometimes slow, but it’s worth all the risk. Imagine if in 20 years time, one of our columnists becomes the next Larry King, Mircea Eliade, or Ion Raţiu. That’s all the satisfaction one would need."

IOAN PRISTAVU Director of Transylvania Insights

NATIONAL RALLY: THE SECRET OF POLICHINELLE What is Right-Wing Extremism? It is a trend, a specific ideology characterised by its “antidemocratic” opposition towards equality. A way of describing this kind of party is nationalist with tendencies to political violence. It is associated with racism, xenophobism and authoritarianism. Another word for it is fascism. When I say facism you immediately think about the Nazi Party or Mussolini in Italy. Modern day facism is way more subtle in great countries, considered Great Powers. I was reading an article entitled “Facist party rising in big country in Europe”. My mind started processing. Who was it about? Germany? No, it has been a strong democracy for 80 years. Spain? Could be. It has internal problems and nationalists may take advantage. I opened the article. I was surprised. It was talking about France. Now, for the reader who does not know, France was one of the main enemies of the Third Reich between 1939-1945 (World War 2). France suffered a lot because of the actions of extremist leaders. So, why would so many French citizens vote and support a far-right party? Well the answer is more complex. First of all let's look at the party itself. The Party I will talk about is called the National Rally. Its leader, Marine Le Pen, got the lead of the party in 2011, when her father retired.

THE POLITICS SECTION

Article By: Octavian Ghisa Photo source: Britannica.com

The Party is far-right, with views on European life and France’s contribution to the European Union’s decisions and strategies. It also has strong views towards immigrants and illegal immigrants. Marine Le Pen ran for presidency in 2017, losing in front of the current president E. Macron with a respectable 21% of the votes in the first round, and 33% in the second. It is clear that Le Pen and her party are now a big part of France’s parliamentary system and politics.

Marine Le Pen is a strong anti-establishment and has very powerful feelings about immigrants coming into France for shelter or safety. On a post on Twitter she stated: “We are not going to welcome any more people, stop, we are full up!”. Part of the statement is true. France had a very hard time with immigrants. 9.7% of their population is formed of immigrants, in 2019 alone France hosted 407,000 immigrants. A lot of these immigrants are muslims. In recent years, France started having constant terrorist attacks killing hundreds of people all over the country. As expected, the population protested and overreacted. Of course not all muslims and immigrants coming into France have bad intentions. Some are fleeing wars or looking for better opportunities. The government did not know what to do. So, Marine Le Pen and the National Rally with their views on muslims and immigrants which some could consider racist and xenophobic, took advantage gaining support. www.transylvania-college.ro | 5

Every difficult situation in history creates context and an opportunity for “someone” to step up with solutions. These so called political solutions for a national problem, are very appealing for the population which now lost hope in the current government and turn their attention to extremist parties. Now of course, as I said in the beginning, France is historically a huge opposant to fascist parties. Then how come people started voting for the National Rally? They forget. History is a very important tool. It teaches us lessons through the mistakes of our past civilisations. Every extremist party’s first target are the more uneducated people who are easily manipulated and turned from their current beliefs. This group of people do not understand the full picture of the party, just focusing on the ideas favoring them. The next social class who would turn their heads towards them are the ones affected by the current context. France was going through a lot of issues such as terrorism and a enormous wave of immigrants. All this pushed a part of the population to the National Rally. What are the political ideologies of the National Rally? What makes them far-right? Why are they a party who the French would not want in charge of their country? Is there any chance that France is the next danger to European safety? All these are questions every sympathisant or opposant of the National Rally should know the answer to. As I mentioned before, the National Rally and Marine Le Pen have strong views on immigrants and foreigners. Another political view of the National Rally concerns the European Union. The matter surrounds the amount of influence France and other countries have on decisions around the European Union. In 2019 Marine Le Pen formed a new far-right group in the European Parliament. Its aim? Devolve power from Brussels back to capitals. The group named the ID (Identity and Democracy), is formed of Le Pen’s National Rally, Italian Deputy Matteo Salvini’s party and a few more nationalists from Austria, Denmark, Finland and Germany. The group aimed to scrap the European Commission which shapes the EU overall strategy, sets budgets and proposes laws and policies in the EU. They were aiming to change it with a new set of guidelines, prefered by the ID, for the parts of the EU left. The ID wants to “save Europe from the EU that is destroying it” and called for a “European alliance of nations” which would take decisions away from Brussels.

The National Rally wants to reinstate national borders and reinforce European control of external borders. All these are meant to prevent immigrants coming into Europe, and of course France. The electoral programme also encourages Europe to “free itself of external influence, America”. All this would ruin all the work done after WW2 in international relations, ruining precious connections and alliances, economic and military, with the USA and put Europe in front of challenges raised by major powers such as China and Russia. All these policies are external. What do they want to do internally, in France, concerning their own population? This will sound repetitive, but their main aim is getting rid of most of the immigrants in France. But, wouldn’t that make them xenophobic? Yes. Although France has a real problem with terrorists and immigrants, there is no reason to discriminate and try to expel them from the country. What makes the National Rally and Marine Le Pen far-right? First I will present you some ideas Le Pen described recently. She described the British Brexit as the most important event in the world since the fall of the Berlin Wall, and Donald Trump’s election back in 2016 a “stone in the building of a new world”. Both these events had huge impacts on international relations with Britain now outside of the European Union and looking likely to distance themselves even more, and Trump creating huge tensions in the Middle East and frankly all over the world with his policies. Why would Le Pen be interested in such events? And how come she praised the two? The answer is simple. She is trying to achieve the same thing, create a similar earthquake in France. One of her best shots of doing so was in 2017 during elections where she lost to Macron. One of her ideologies that sounds pretty far-right is “putting the Native French first”. The treatment towards foreigners is perhaps the most stand-out of the National Front’s views. They want to prioritise giving jobs, houses, schools or any area of public provision to native French, and by doing so isolating immigrants

“She is upholding a policy that not only is thought by constitutional experts unconstitutional, but has been judged by the law to be unlawful.” declares professor Shields. This so-called nativism is still central in Marine Le Pen’s platform. The party had multiple members accused of “kissing a picture of Adolf Hitler”, practicing salutes, having antisemitic and racist ideas. The National Front and Marine Le Pen do not declare themselves as neo-nazis or facist, but who would? All these members have been evicted by the party itself. In the end, the nativism, the support for events that make international relations tremble and members being linked to Nazi ideologies make the National Front far-right. Lets now go over the possibility of the National Front actually coming to power in France. Would the french population be satisfied? I doubt it. This party seems to have popular ideas with the population with their expected votes rising from 10% in 2010 to 24% in 2017. Considering the National Front being a far-right party, not everything is presented fully. Propaganda and manipulation of the population against the immigrants, manifestos and rallies will soonly take over France. Being the mother of democracy in Europe it is very likely to say that part of the population would get upset over the policies and ideologies that arise out of the blue causing protests, revolts and more violent events.

“Is France led by the National Rally the next danger to European safety? Europe encountered its fair share of dictators and extremist leaders, far-right leaders. Hitler, Mussolini and Francisco Franco are some examples. None of these brang anything but tensions and a feeling of insecurity all around Europe. Is it fair to compare Le Pen and her party to the likes of the NSDAP led by Hitler? Yes. Any far-right leaders, extremist nationalist leaders had, have and will have crazy ideas, ideologies and views, which, if they eventually get to power, implement by force. If Le Pen wins the 2022 elections in France, Europe has to have big question marks about its safety and pay close attention to Le Pen and the National Rally. The last thing needed is a far-right, extremist France breaking bonds with other countries, disrupting precious international relations with Russia, USA, Germany or others. A France led by Le Pen is a guarantee of chaos and tensions around the world. The France we know, the only military big power left in the EU would turn its back on democracy and cause havoc around Europe, changing the order of things. In the end, Marine Le Pen and the National Rally are a party who continue to gain support, a party that will continue pressurising the current government, a party considered racist, xenophobic, anti-democratic and homophobic. The current issues in France that the National Rally is taking advantage of need solving before it is too late. The European Community needs to stay careful, preserving peace, safety and democracy. As an ending I will present an allegory popular in France. A symbol popular in France is the Marianne, representing the revolution and its values, liberty and equality. Marine Le Pen is slowly turning into an opposite Marianne with her values being extreme nationalism, anti-european and nativism. Image Source: DW

Uyghur crisis of China

By Beatrice Isaila

->Uyghurs are reportedly being held in internment camps by the Chinese government, which denies these allegations. This has been highly criticized and even deemed genocide by many.

Critics of the policy described it as an ethnocide or a cultural genocide and, multiple activists, human rights experts and, government officials deemed it a genocide. Mike Pompeo, the former US Secretary of State, spoke on this matter: “I believe this genocide is ongoing, and that we are witnessing the systematic attempt to destroy Uighurs by the Chinese party-state”. Other international reactions have been mixed, with 45 united nations member states supporting China’s policies in October 2020 and 39 countries condemning it. In July and August 2020, human rights groups have called on the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate Chinese officials over allegations of crimes against humanity and genocide. On December 14th 2020, the International Criminal Court announced that they will not investigate China because it is not a signatory to the ICC.

Uyghurs are a Turkic ethnic group and one of China’s officially recognized ethnic minorities, originating from the general region of East and Central Asia. Now, they make up less than half of the Xinjiang population. Most of them are Muslim, Islam being a big part of their culture and identity. Since 2015, it has been estimated that over 1 million Uyghurs have been detained in internment camps, which the Chinese government calls ‘re-education’ camps. Inside them, they are reportedly subjects to forced labour, torture and suppression of religious practices. People who managed to escape have also reported physical and mental abuse. There is even evidence that shows birth prevention and mass female sterilization of Uyghur Muslims. In fact, the Chinese government statistics show that birth rates in the mostly Uyghur populated regions of Hotan and Kashgar decreased by over 60% from 2015 to 2018. The Chinese government denies these allegations and defends their ‘re-education’ camps.

POLITICA ET CETERA -Articol de către Ioan Pristavu

Sursa poză: Canal You Tube Politica Et Cetera

Ioan Boilă, fost deținut politic in perioadă comunistă.

THE POLITICS SECTION

www.transylvania-college.ro | 9

THE POLITICS SECTION

THE POLITICS SECTION

Roma, a stigmatized identity -By Sebastian Stoenoiu If you want to understand this topic you need to first understand a little bit about the history of Roma communities. The Roma community is one of the most mistreated Romania

ethnic and

groups

Europe,

in

being

scapegoated for many misfortunes and

shortcomings.

The

people

from the Roma community have been in bondage for 500 years on the Romanian territories and I bet that you didn’t know that they were sent to concentration camps in 1941, in Transnistria, also known as the “Forgotten Holocaust”. From these concentration camps, just half of them were released, the rest were killed by gas and held in cruel

conditions.

In

Romanian

history textbooks, this information is nowhere to be seen. Why? Well, if you would have known this information your perception of the past would have been completely different and you would have a different

perception

of

“Romanian elite” of that time.

the

7 out of 10 Romanians, according to an IRES poll, stated that they don’t trust the Roma community which is odd because they would trust in other ethnic minorities such as Hungarians and Saxons. Here we came across stereotypes that have been passed from one generation to the next, hidden racism, part of the normal process of socialisation. “Hide your phone, we are walking by them” or “don’t stay out too long or they will come for you” these are racist remarks that are used so easily on a regular basis, which are intended to make kids afraid and in time, hate and discriminate the Roma communities. To understand what it means to be discriminated, you should think that in Romania people from the Roma community hide their identity so they can get a job because very few jobs are open for them. After all, they are stereotyped as being” thieves, lazy, unorganised and dirty”.For example, companies take a risk to hire students who don’t have any experience, but the same companies do not risk hiring Roma professionals because of their ethnic identity.

These communities live in terrible conditions, many of them are relocated to the peripheries of cities, living on mountains of trash and chemical waste, recycling to survive and living below the poverty line. The Roma children are also very neglected, some of them not being able to get proper education because of the racism they would encounter at school or because they need to help their families financially, begging for money in the streets. Our society hates and discriminates Roma community because it is easier to blame them for their lack of education, poor housing and hygiene or for bringing shame to the Romanian identity as EU’s beggars and thieves. Why? These people are unemployed and don't have decent houses because society discriminates them in the work environment and school. So, next time you think of judging them, think of how much pain they go through every day and think about how they feel being neglected just because they come from a different ethnical background.

The Impact of Coronavirus on the Stock market since the start of the outbreak In the last year the worldwide economy has changed drastically. Due to the pandemic businesses have had to slow down. Production has decreased because of fewer people being able to work at once. Many

Unemployment rates have increased in every country. Many people have either lost their jobs due to their employers not being able to pay them anymore. Australia has been one of the few countries that has been able to recover from this hit, its unemployment numbers are already back to 2019 levels, yet other great economies such as the US, Spain and the Uk are still behind. After a full decade of job expansion the US job market has taken a massive hit. France on the other hand has been able to keep many of its industries working therefore their economy sustained much less damage then others.

How is the economy looking today?

Although the IMF estimated that the economic decline of 4.4% caused in 2020 by the Covid pandemic. Has been the worst since the Great Depression of the 1930s. The only large country to register any kind of economic growth in 2020 was China with a registered growth of 2.3%. But with many of the world’s greatest industries such as travel and hotels predicted to start up again in 2021. The IMF is predicting that the global economy will grow by 5.2% in 2021. This will be driven primarily by India and China, these two world powers are expected to grow by 8.8% and 8.2% respectively. Recovery however is reliant on big economie that have been hit hard by the outbreak, such as the UK or Italy, which is expected to be slow.

TAKING RELATIONAL AGGRESSION SERIOUSLY -Article By Patricia Gîrbovan

Bullying. A word that every teenager heard about, a complex theme that affects every human being. In the last decade, students, teachers and parents are discussing more and more about the effects of bullying, how to prevent it and what are the solutions to stop it or at least, minimize the consequences that bullying has on teanerges. There are all sorts of bullying, starting from the physical ones, as hitting, pushing or punching and ending up with the emotional ones, like verbal bullying, cyber bullying or exclusion bullying. The effects of any type of bullying are hurtful, while the physical bullying can be noticed right away and be treated immediately, the emotional bullying is more subtle, as it can not be seen, happening in the teenagers minds. A lot of things were written about all types of bullying, but not so many about Relational Aggression. It is also referred to as “social bullying ” or “friendship bullying,”. These behaviors are intended to hurt another person's feelings, and they involve emotional rather than physical harm. When you exclude somebody out of the group , when you refuse to work with a classmate, when you ignore somebody, when you spread personal information, when you teese or put down a person or if you spread false or negative rumors about somebody you do not like without any reason, you are going to have a huge impact on the mental health of the teenager. Being a teenager you have many problems like the grades, the parents, the colleges, the physical appearance and more. Relational Aggression does not help the teen solving any of them, it actually complicates them in such a way that the teenager will have low self esteem, depression, low grades and eating disorders. For the parents and teachers, there is a huge responsibility to notice any signs of Relational Aggression as early as possible. Everything is built on the previous trust with the teens, so they can feel free and share all the experienties from school, being them positive or negative.

You may ask how can the parent help? You can be a good listener, encourage your kid to speak to you about all that happened and do not interrupt or criticize. Try your best to put yourself in teenagers shoes. If the bullying affected the kid too much or for long, you might need some help from the school or from a qualified specialist. You may ask how can the teacher help? As in the parents case, a trusty relationship helps a lot in finding information about the bullying that happened. In the lessons a teacher can promote empathy, while teaching communication and problem solving skills which will help them in challenging social situations . You can help teenagers realise the impact of their behavior, either good or bad. Adults definitely can help, but overall it is the main responsibility of the teen to react when bullied. I am not saying that is easy, but there are steps to be done to control it and overcome it. Learning how to stand up for yourself is an important part when teens are trying to survive social life, while being aware about how your behavior can affect others. On the other hand, you have to know your values. Knowing what is important for you in a friendship, also to decide which is healthy or toxic for you. Another thing would be to strengthen your self esteem by working on ways to feel confident on who you really are, no matter what others say about you. I know that it is hard to deal with difficult situations, but you can find activities that you like, outside the school. No matter how easy or difficult the situation is, I think that the most important thing for you to do is to talk to someone you trust and you know that will do something about the situation, before it’s too late. In this life, everyone passed or will pass through Relational Aggression, and it’s ok. Nobody says that you do not have to experience that at all. The most important thing is to realize that you are not the image of others , you are a special person and you are loved by the important people in your life. How you cope with the situations will make you a stronger and wiser person, a person that learned the valued lessons of life.

THE SOCIAL MEDIA IMPACT ON TEENAGERS -Article By Rares Zăvăleanu A lot of us remember our early childhood as the happiest period of our lives; we were young, we felt loved, we were appreciative and aware of everything that was around us. Do you remember playing with your parents and your friends? Do you remember spending time at your grandparent’s place? Do you remember that mix of excitement and boredom when you were going on trips with your family? Wasn’t all of that amazing? Today, most of us have to take some time before being able to tell when was the last time we were truly happy. Yes, you could say that we have grown up and an infinity of problems have appeared meanwhile, and it would be true. But have you ever asked yourself how many of those problems are truly problems? We are continuously exposed to all kinds of media. Our attention span is totally overwhelmed by that, so we end up keeping in mind only exceptional things. We start every morning by charging ourselves with tragic information, death, poverty, sickness. Unconsciously, our mind hides this information very carefully, and only gets it out in the moments where we are the most vulnerable. You know, a hundred years ago, when our ancestors had thoughts like “ah, my life is bad” they would just go back to work and focus on that, life goes on. Nowadays, when we think that our life is bad, we open Instagram and we see that one model spending thousands of dollars in a fashion store in Dubai. As I said, we are only exposed to exceptional things. Everybody has a minuscule piece of exceptional in their lives, and that's the only thing that they are showing us. But we don’t assimilate it that way, we end up asking ourselves why everybody's life is so great and why ours is not. We end up searching for any kind of approval, we lose our dignity to feel accepted. The illusion that everyone is exceptional is so deep inside our mind, that we actually can’t understand that everybody is not as smart as Einstein, everybody doesn’t have the same money as Bill Gates, everybody doesn’t have a thousand friends. And that belief, that one single belief leads us to depression, to anxiety, to silence, generally speaking, it leads us to sadness. In less than a generation, social media has evolved from direct electronic information exchange, to virtual gathering place, to retail platform, to vital 21st-century marketing tool.
