TPE COLLEAGUES CELEBRATE EARTH DAY BY VOLUNTEERING AT GREENHEAD PARK
Green-fingered colleagues gathered at Greenhead Park in Huddersfield earlier this week to celebrate Earth Day (Monday 22 April).
Carrying out a range of activities such as litter picking, planting works, weeding and dry stonewalling around the park, the group didn’t let the wet weather dampen their spirits as they did their bit for the environment.
Steve Gilder, Lead Sustainability
Manager, said: “We had a great day volunteering at Greenhead Park. It was fantastic to support a local park around a major hub on our network while learning some new skills along the way. A huge thanks to all who gave up their time on Monday.
“Our involvement in events such as this also supports flagship goals within Our Customers &
Communities, one of the four pillars of our TPE sustainability strategy, along with wider industry aims under the Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB) Sustainable Rail Blueprint. We will continue to support other local community organisations, putting rail at the heart of communities, so please keep an eye out for future volunteering opportunities and get involved where you can.”
WINNERS OF THE LATEST INNOVATION CHALLENGE REVEALED
Thank you to everyone who submitted their ideas in our latest Innovation Challenge, which was all about improving accessibility on our trains and at our stations. The team received some great suggestions and are excited to work through these, with some already implemented, such as running open days for new/expectant parents so they know how best to board and where is most comfortable for breastfeeding, and our 'Try the Train' days will be extended to include this group. There were also some excellent ideas for how to improve our ramps, from making markings to make them quicker to deploy, to plugging geographical gaps where there is a shortage of trained users. Other suggestions included improving the accessibility of some of our digital touch points, improving baby changing facilities and improving our help for customers with non-visible disabilities.
Prizes were awarded to Steve Gilder who won an Apple Watch, Stephen Malcolm, Grant Hing and Chris Evans won a pair of headphones each, and Molly Reilly, Ben Colombari and Hayley Yates received earpods. Congratulations!

JOIN THE YOUNG RAIL PROFESSIONALS NETWORK
Young Rail Professionals (YRP) was founded in 2009 to promote the rail industry as a great place to work, inspire the next generation of railway talent and develop young people to reach their potential. YRP brings together people from all aspects of the industry, whether they are involved in engineering, asset management, train operations, strategic planning, maintenance, franchising, regulation, marketing, human resources or other professions. There is no age limit to becoming a member – generally, the events are aimed at members with 10 years or less experience in their rail career.
YRP is a not-for-profit organisation led by regional committees of volunteers and governed by the constitution. Membership is free and there is no charge for any professional development events or ambassador activities. The networking events, which include food and drink socials, are subsidised to ensure they are affordable and accessible to all members.
TPE has helped with the development of YRP in the north west by advertising Rail Week events (which were attended by several colleagues), and by purchasing a table at the recent YRP Annual Awards Dinner in London.
If you would like to join YRP, please reach out to Chris Jeffery (Chris.Jeffery@tpexpress.co.uk) , Chair of the North West Region, with your location. Chris will sign you up in the north west, or direct you to a region closer to where you’re based.
