TRANSNET'S SUSTAINABILITY MEASURES

TransNet – Recycling story and how we also assist customers with soft plastics Will work on this with Ed and Johnny as to what we do with customers, you’re all over what we do and how to word it.

Waste Reduction Measures There is a fine balance between reducing packaging and keeping product protected, but any excess identified is a waste of both production and disposal resources. With that in mind we have worked with our suppliers to remove any unnecessary packaging and, where we can’t remove it, we have begun changing to greener and more sustainable alternatives. This not only reduces our waste but also that of our customers. In our first year of reductions we managed to reduce our own landfill waste by 66% on the previous year.

Sustainable Alternatives When void filling to secure items in a box during transit we’re using this clever single ply folded and creased paper to do the job. We’re still looking for a viable compostable alternative pallet wrap, but in the meantime we have introduced a new pallet wrapping machine that stretches the wrap more and in turn reduces by 30% the amount of wrap

Ph 0800 442 182 +64 9 274 3340

required to secure the load. All our pallet wrap is recyclable and we send this to a local plastic manufacturer, where it is recycled and made into TransNet cable cover that we sell to networks around the country. We’ve established a solar powered micro grid at our Auckland office that runs our electric forklifts and powers our building, which is one of the reasons why we’re able to provide our customers with completely carbon neutral delivery of our products. The micro grid has also allowed us to add electric vehicles to our fleet and we offer the same smart charging infrastructure in our range. Our unique position in the market enables us to understand the demands of EV charging on supply as well as the desired charging of end users. We have partnered with Wallbox - the leader in EV charging. Wallbox units monitor and manage usage to reduce the demand on supply. Our team work closely with commercial customers to instil knowledge around EV charging and how best to set up their charging infrastructure for a mutually beneficial result.

Recycling Recycling was already a vital part of our business, so we ramped up our internal programme and found ways to recycle materials previously deemed non-recyclable, such as polystyrene, batteries, and even wood pallets. This has also enabled our customers to recycle materials they had been previously sending to landfill. In some instances we have been able to assist in the transportation of these recyclable materials coordinating this with deliveries of goods using our in-house delivery fleet. We’ve done the work and we want everyone to reap the gains.

DR. FRANK DRUMM TALKS HEATSHRINK

Heatshrink Technology — Making Electrical Connections More Reliable

HEATSHRINK TUBING OPTIONS SINGLE-WALL TUBING Single-wall tubing provides insulation, strain relief, and protection of the underlying electric cable against chemical degradation, mechanical damage and abrasion.

Dr. Frank Drumm, Senior Director Product Management, Cable Accessories, TE Connectivity (TE)

For owners and operators of electrical infrastructure systems the need to safeguard all electrical cables and their connections and terminations is top priority. Connections between adjoining electrical cables and between cables and mechanical equipment are always the weakest link. Proper investment in heatshrink tubing and components can help to reduce the total cost of ownership through improved lifecycle cost savings, reduced maintenance needs and lower failure rates. This is especially important for components installed in remote locations and hard-to-reach places, e.g. underground. Because heatshrink tubing and components are manufactured from cross-linked thermoplastic polymers they are able to operate reliably at elevated temperatures without risk of melting, and are able to withstand a maximum temperature range of 150°C to 250°C. These premium components are especially well-suited to connect and terminate electric cables and components and ensure long-term system reliability. TE HEATSHRINK IS ABLE TO MEET THESE CRITICAL PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS: • Ensure current-carrying capacity and desired electrical performance • Provide electrical insulation • Provide electrical stress control (to manage electrical stress and prevent tracking and erosion)

Ph 0800 442 182 +64 9 274 3340

• Prevent potential oil leakage from paperinsulated lead cable (PILC) — and avoid moisture ingress • Provide desired screening and shielding • Ensure fault-carrying capacity • Guarantee earthing • Provide sealing to prevent ingress of moisture and other fluids • Provide protection against mechanical abrasion, impact damage, chemical abrasion and more • Improve fire resistance and/or flame retardancy CROSS-LINKING THE THERMOPLASTIC — THE KEY ENABLING TECHNOLOGY During production sophisticated process controls are used during extrusion, crosslinking, and expansion to ensure uniform wall thickness of the finished products before and after installation. Once heatshrink parts have been extruded, cross-linked, stretched into their desired expanded form and cooled again, they benefit from a "memory effect." This memory effect allows the parts to remain — intact and stable —in this expanded state indefinitely at ambient temperatures. Specific heatshrink product options that are available for MV applications include: • • • • •

MV splices/joints MV terminations Wraparound sleeves Tubing Tape

sales@transnet.co.nz

MULTI-LAYER TUBING This involves the use of multiple standalone tubing sleeves to achieve the desired level of functional performance, with several individual heat-shrink tubes layered consecutively over the electric cable. CO-EXTRUDED TUBING Co-extruded heat-shrink tubing also combines multiple layers for enhanced performance, but during manufacturing the layers are coextruded to produce a single integrated tubing product. This enables a onestep installation process. DUAL-WALL, CO-EXTRUDED HEATSHRINK TUBING Dual-wall heatshrink tubing is a coextruded product that combines two layers of heat-shrink thermoplastic, or an outer layer of heat-shrink thermoplastic and an inner layer of hotmelt adhesive. The outer conductive layer acts as a kind of electrical screen while the inner layer provides insulation and can help improve conformity to irregular surfaces. TRIPLE-LAYER, CO-EXTRUDED HEAT-SHRINK TUBING This multi-layer tubing consists of a flexible inner elastomeric layer and stiffer heatshrink outer laters. During operation electrical cable will experience a cyclic heating and cooling in response to rising and falling load on the network. In the face of the rising temperatures, the cable expands, yet the inner layer will retain its void-free hermetic seal against the cable surface, thanks for compressive forces exerted by the outer layers.

HIGH PERFORMANCE BUSHING BOOTS

RCAB 11kV & 22kV Cold Applied bushing boots Raychem elastomeric insulating boots are moulded parts which fit over the connection between the cable lug and the inline or rightangled equipment bushing to improve phaseto-phase and phase-to-ground insulation. They are used in switchgear and transformer cable boxes where the air clearances are insufficient for normal operation, or to protect against flashover due to rodents or high humidity. The non-tracking elastomeric housing has excellent erosion resistance, dielectric properties and environmental resistance, giving superb performance in areas of high humidity and electrical stress. TE’s Raychem RCAB boots work in combination with all Raychem termination product lines including both elastomeric and traditional heat shrink technology. TE’s Raychem RCAB boots are quick and easy to install and do not require any taping of the bushing or the termination. The boot can easily be removed and reinstalled without the need for additional material or tooling, allowing access to the bushing connection for test purposes.

FEATURES • Push on cold applied bushing boots • Suits right angle or inline bushing applications • Wide application range • Simple & easy to install • Tool free application • High-performance insulation material • Excellent track and erosion resistance • Removable and reinstallable • Unlimited shelf life • Connection can be energised immediately after installation • Silicone material • Supplied in sets of 3

GET ADVANCED FAULT DETECTION WITH REMOTE

Fault Indicator for Overhead Lines The FLA3.1VL is a robust and versatile Fault Passage Indicator (FPI) with the unique ability to query and set parameters via remote control from the ground. The FLA3.1VL has a 360deg bright flashing LED to indicate fault passage with a myriad of fault detection and threshold settings. The FLA3.1VL is hotstick mountable with a simple hotstick

adapter and can accommodate a wide conductor range. Using the FIS-FR (Relay/Dry-contact) or FIS-FS (Modbus/Serial) gateways, you can connect the FLA3.1VL radio interface to SCADA. The FLA3.1VL can be queried for line current, temperature, battery status and presence of voltage among other parameters.

Advanced Fault Detection The FLA3.1VL fault passage indicator provides two methods to detect faults. The absolute threshold detection method works with a selected fixed current – selectable in 10A increments; or an automatically calculated absolute threshold. This method can be disabled when not required. Additionally, the fault indicator provides a di/dt measurement

method. This method responds to current load changes within a certain period of time. The level of lead change can be adjusted via the remote control. Additionally, a subsequent voltage loss is used as a criterion to assure correct detection of faults. All parameters can be set and confirmed via the Remote Control.
