THE DIVOT SEPTEMBER 2022

Mission Statement

“To provide our members, their families and their guests with golf, dining, and recreational programming in a family-friendly environment. Our exceptional service, outstanding facilities and first-class amenities will create greater value for our members.”

Graphic Designer | AR

As another Summer at TVCC concludes, I want to thank our entire staff for all their hard work to make this a successful and fun filled year at our club. At this point, many of our college team members have returned to school and I wish them all best for the upcoming academic year and look forward to seeing them next year.

Pat Clabeaux and the search committee have remained busy over the Summer. If you recall, we re-posted the position for General Manager in the Spring. While we got off to a slow start, by mid-June we received resumes at an increased pace. To this point, we received over a dozen resumes and interviewed four candidates. We brought one candidate forward for follow up interviews and are reaching out to references. We are close to concluding this process and will announce the candidate when all the details are finalized. I can say with confidence that our golf course has been in top condition this year. I heard many compliments about it over the Summer from members and guests. It is a credit to Adam and his team. So, it does not surprise that Adam was nominated by the WNY PGA as Superintendent of the Year. This recognition is based on feedback from peers and is a tribute to Adam’s leadership, collaboration, and ability to build a high performing team. Please join me in congratulating Adam on this honor. Looking forward to seeing you at the Club and let’s hope the wonderful weather we have been experiencing continues so that we can all enjoy some “fall” golf! Go Bills!

2September FROM THE DESK OF YOUR PRESIDENT Anthony J. Delmonte, Jr.

Weather permitting, we will continue to provide lunch and dinner service on our patio until the awning is taken down on October 31.

3September FROM THE DESK OF THE GENERAL MANAGER & MEMBERSHIP SERVICES DIRECTOR Tina Gutekunst

Where did summer go? In the blink of an eye, it’s Labor Day! And this means that unfortunately our pool will officially close on Monday, September 5. Special thanks to all the summer staff who worked so hard and for doing such a fantastic job managing our programs, especially with the increase in participation. Believe it or not, we recently met to start planning for next year! So, watch out….we have some great ideas! We sincerely hope that you and your family enjoyed all of our programs, tournaments and events. Speaking of tournaments and events, for those of you who participated in the Ralph Haas Invitational/ Summer Bash, I have to say that I think it was one of the most incredible events that we have ever planned at TVCC! We received so many compliments about the on-course food and beverage, condition of the course, outstanding service provided by the entire staff, and finally, the delicious food that Chef and his team prepared. Special thanks to De’Ann, Brandon, Joe, Lee, Bruce, Chef Dan, Adam, Jonathan, Hiram, and their staffs. Hard work guarantees a continuing successful relationship and it’s the vision of employees like all of you who turn desired plans into success. We value each and every one of you! And finally, to Ralph Haas, we hope you know how much you mean to us, thank you for your wisdom, support, and kindness for so many Asyears!we prepare for this Divot, the Art Cole Tournament will be held in a few days which has the reputation of our most fun/casual tournament of the year! For those of you who are unaware of the history of this tournament, Art Cole was one of our founding members, and a five term President. He was a gentleman, dedicated and supported the Club for many years. I had the pleasure of knowing Mr. and Mrs. Cole and can confirm that they were wonderful members. We have a full field and expect this to be another fantastic tournament! At this time of year, we say farewell to our summer staff who did an outstanding job! We wish all of you well, please stay safe and healthy and we look forward to seeing you next year! We are now in the process of rebuilding our staff for the upcoming Fall/holiday season. Now, more than ever, it is important that you make reservations in advance. This will help us to ensure that we are providing you with the best possible dining experience. With this added reduction in our workforce, we are still experiencing difficulties hiring culinary staff, and daytime servers. Again, we are hoping that this will change in the near future and appreciate your patience as we work through this inconvenience.

Finally, to all the kids’, just remember, the first day of school is better than the last day of school.

Firsts are best because they are beginnings. Best wishes and best of luck to you, please stay safe and healthy!

7September

On Saturday, August 13th we wrapped up our summer of fun with a selfie scavenger hunt. Twenty-five children enjoyed kid-friendly buffet before being split into three teams: The Void, The Flaming Hot Eagles, and the Underwater Nuclear Bananas. Each team, led by a lifeguard and Kids’ Club counselor, was tasked with taking group selfies at a variety of locations around the Club. In addition, the children had to find objects or complete challenges such as all wearing goggles in a selfie by the pool or finding Brandon and Tina and taking pictures with them! While the results were tallied, the children participated in an hour of free swim with friends. They also played Oreo slide. In this game, an Oreo is slid down the table. If it lands on a line, the children earn a prize. The evening culminated with three rounds of glow stick capture the flag. Congratulations to the Flaming Hot Eagles on their win. Thank you to all our members and staff who assisted our kids in this event and thank you for a wonderful summer season. Below you will find a sneak peak of our events for the remainder of 2022!

The charity golf tournament to benefit the Child Advocacy Center was a huge success. A special, heartfelt thank you to Lynne Stevens for all her work in chairing the event. Also, a special thank you to all those whose donated baskets, hole signs, and most importantly their time and talent. It simply could not happen without all the dedicated members of TVCC. Of course, we never want to forget thanking the staff – we appreciate your support immensely. The final donation will be announced at the Fall dinner – hope to see you Pleasethere.watch the Divot for our Fall activities, including the Fall dinner scheduled for October 6. The dinner is a wonderful way to close the season as we start nestling down for the colder weather.

I also need to mention my love and gratitude to Julie Bradley who has been my co-chair these past two years. She was my right hand with her support, encouragement, and belief in the cause. Most of all Julie was the BEST of friends, not only to me, but also to TVCC. She will be missed. Thank you all, Lynne Stevens

Perhaps even worse are the players leaving their golf carts or push carts 20 yards

The golf course and practice facilities will be closed both days to ensure the outside contractor as well as our staff can complete the necessary work on time. Please allow a minimum of seven to ten days for the turf to recover, as the healing process can vary, with weather being a larger factor. The Golf Shop will be closed both days as well. reCiproCal play With aerification right around the corner, please plan accordingly if wanting to arrange to play an away game. We politely ask that only one member from the group contact the golf shop to schedule a tee time and allow for a reasonable time frame to tee off at another club. It is strongly suggested to reach out a week in advance of the date you desire to play.

A Message from The Golf Professional Jonathan Decker, PGA Head Golf Professional

This past week we witnessed several new club champions crowned, with both the Men’s and Women’s Championship divisions coming down to the final hole. The summer is winding down, but there are many rounds of golf left to be played, especially on Sundays as our beloved Buffalo Bills have earned the primetime slots, with 1pm on Sunday a rarity in 2022. Rain outs have been few and far between this season, and perhaps that has helped our season-long match play events stay on schedule, which is not easy with so many schedules to coordinate. Best of luck to those still in the hunt for the President’s Cup, Amigone Match Play, and Angelo Cup titles. We have seen lots of wear and tear this summer with all the golf rounds played this season. Thank you again to everyone filling your divots in the fairways with the sand provided and repairing ball marks correctly. Ball mark repair should have no “flipping action” when using the divot tool. It should be a pushing motion to move the grass back to its original location. Once the repair is complete it should be green side up. If you see any brown, you are doing it wrong. An improperly repaired ball mark could take weeks to recover, but one repaired correctly will be fine in a couple of days max. You have seen our coyote friend keeping watch over the property. We are hoping he will deter the geese from walking the grounds and leaving deposits on the course. The geese are a challenge and a menace to all areas of Western NY. Exciting times at TVCC and still the buzz of Western NY. We hope to continue the renaissance of the club into the next decade. Our staff will do our best to continue to make TVCC the best family club or just the best club in Western NY. Enjoy your fall golf. The best time of the year in Western NY.

A from the Greens Superintendent Adam Mis

September is already here. It has been a great summer for any outdoor activities. This has been one of the driest summers I can remember. The course has held on surprisingly good even with reliance on our aged irrigation system and poor water quality. Irrigation parts are beginning to arrive, and we are storing for the spring installation. The grass is tired in spots, but course aeration is coming September 12th and 13th. The course will close Monday afternoon and all-day Tuesday to get everything cleaned up. This, with the shorter days and cooler temperatures will provide much-needed oxygen infusion and compaction release. During this period, we will also be over seeding to continue to incorporate the latest turf varieties with great stress and disease resistance. The nets were updated at the end of the range last month and hopefully we will keep the balls inside the range and not in the neighbors’ yards. We also had a visit from our architect last month and we are putting together plans to adjust areas on the course including #12 green surround, #14 pond/ fairway, and #18 green. We will continue to keep making improvements to TVCC for years to come to keep up with evolving game and improve the entire property.

16September

At our recent Past Presidents’ Dinner Tony shared his thoughts on the strength of the club, reflecting on consecutive years of growth and terrific progress. I believe that many share those sentiments and that our recent membership vote on irrigation, heavily lopsided in favor of the project, is a clear sign of trust and optimism in the future of the club. Contributing to that sentiment is the great progress Adam’s team has made on the golf course in the last 20 months. Fortunately, our investment in irrigation only stands to further transform the way his team works and will help us deliver a great golf experience. And to be honest, it symbolically feels like we’ve addressed a known need and turned an important corner.

A from the Greens Chair Geoffrey G. Burker

17September

While we all play a part in the investment, being part of a great golf experience can take many forms and remains all of our responsibility. Just as Derek asked you to increase awareness around pace of play earlier this year, I’m asking that you do the same with regard to course condition and maintenance. How can you help? Empty two bottles of divot mix every round. Before heading out on your round, begin with checking that you have a bottle of divot repair mix. Ideally, replace and sand your divots, but at the very least use your mix to fill your divot. This saves maintenance hours that can be used in higher value ways, improves course aesthetics, and playability. As a rule of thumb, try to empty a bottle of divot mix on the front and then the back nine, fixing yours and others’ divots. Use our great new rakes at least once a round. I know. Great rakes? I really think buying better rakes was one of the best, simple changes that we made last year. Even if you are lucky enough to avoid our bunkers for a whole day, if you are waiting for playing partners and you notice an unraked bunker, give those rakes a try and pay it forward. Bunkers are tough enough, nobody wants to be in foot (or on occasion, a hoof) print. Grab a repair tool and brag about how many ball marks you repaired. Club members, when asked about their course will usually begin by talking about the greens. Fortunately for us, our green complexes are the absolute signature design element of the course and the best in the area. Let’s do our part to ensure that great design is matched with great condition. At least once around, let your group know that you repaired three or four ball marks. It sure beats telling them you made, well, something other than par. Keep moving. Whether it is pace of play or course condition, if you find yourself standing idle for too long, you can assuredly create a better golf experience for yourself and others by taking action. Hiram Walker Maintenance Manager

Members are encouraged to consider common sense when making casual-attire decisions. We prefer our members dress-up rather than dress-down when visiting the Club. While we expect that members will use good taste and judgment, the Board has directed Club Management to discreetly review any inappropriate casual attire decisions directly with the member to ensure that the Club maintains a casual environment that is enjoyable for everyone. Unacceptable Clubhouse Attire: Yoga pants, leggings,t-shirts, shorts, and athletic attire Road East Amherst, NY 14051 www.transitvalley.comtransitvalleycountryclubtransit_valley_cc716-689-9677 maint@transitvalley.com
