Mission Statement “To provide our members, their families and their guests with golf, dining, and recreational programming in a family-friendly environment. Our exceptional service, outstanding facilities and first-class amenities will create greater value for our members.” Graphic Designer | AR

FROM THE DESK OF YOUR PRESIDENT

Anthony J. Delmonte, Jr. As you read in my email last week, Brian Severn decided to rescind his acceptance of the GM position due to a family emergency. While this news is a disappointment, I am confident we will find another qualified candidate. Here is what has been done so far. Pat Clabeaux, Chairwoman of the search committee, began reviewing resumes of other candidates and reached out to the search committee. A meeting will be scheduled within the next week. Tina will remain as General Manager until we find a replacement. I applaud her for unwavering commitment to her job and Transit Valley. I thank her for all she does for us. Adam and his staff have worked diligently over the Winter and early Spring to ensure the golf course is in quality playing condition for this time of year. Some items of note include new gravel on the cart paths and new forward tees. During the annual meeting in March, Mr. Burker offered some reflection on the last year and some of what is ahead with regards to the golf course. From the survey, our top priority is delivering a great on-course experience. Adam’s approach to make changes incrementally is reflected by items such as green repair on 5, tee box on 6, and fairway on 13. Culturally, he implemented a set of course standards and the board provided him with a budget commensurate with peers. It is about 25% higher than the prior year. With that, Adam has hired an fantastic team and made targeted common sense improvements to the course. For example, Adam and his team have done a fantastic job in being opportunistic about removal of trees. They removed dead trees on 5, between 8 and 15, between 15 and 16, and off of 18 tee. This will improve both the playability and aesthetics of the golf course. Looking forward to this year and beyond, a master plan was built in partnership with Mark Mungeum…Mark was involved in the renovations of Olympic Hills prior to a US Open in the early 2000s. He leveraged the prior master plan and also took into account our long-term strategy. His output will guide us on incremental changes and potentially more wholesale changes down the road. The board believes that our next big move as a club is irrigation. The system is now 40 years old. Last year Adam and his team had to stop other work to repair the system practically on a weekly basis. Our ability to deliver a beautiful golf course is limited by the current system’s reach. Furthermore, the risk of a wholesale failure increases each year. The need to replace the system was ranked high in the survey. When the time comes for a vote on irrigation, it is an investment that is overdue – every board for the last 15 years has discussed it. We are finally in a position of membership strength so we believe the time to act is now. There will be more information to follow on this topic. Lastly, I want to thank Adam and his team for performing great work this past year. He has especially done a masterful job of managing his budget and turning out super results. Thank you, Adam! One final update. As some of you may know, the club has owned a house on Muegel Road (next to the fire hall) for several years. We got minimal use from it. Our former greens superintendent lived there during his employment with us. The board decided it would be more beneficial for us to sell the property as the cost to maintain it outweighed the value of retaining it. We listed it with a local agent, and we have a signed contract in place. The closing should occur within the next few months.

FROM THE DESK OF THE GENERAL MANAGER & MEMBERSHIP SERVICES DIRECTOR

Tina Gutekunst

Are You Ready...? Let’s Do It! Another busy season is upon us. As I write this article we are “gearing up” for a very busy weekend. The weather is finally going to cooperate, and the tee sheet is stacked. Adam and his crew have been diligently working on preparing the golf course, and Coach Matt has been working hard putting up all the tennis and pickleball nets. The swimming pool cover is being removed next week and we will start preparing the pool complex for our Memorial Day weekend opening. The Halfway House is being cleaned to officially reopen on Tuesday, May 3rd. The clubhouse awning has been installed and will be ready for the summer as soon as the construction on the outside bar is complete. If you remember last summer, the outside bar was too low, so we will be raising the pavers. The outside barstools were not durable and were covered under warranty, so they have been replaced at no cost to the club. The new simulator patio furniture has arrived and will be in place in the next couple of weeks. This will be one of the most popular “hangouts” more to come on some added features for this new amenity! Our management team has met to discuss the results of our member survey and will be focusing on the areas that need improvement. Our summer staff will be returning for the season in the next couple of weeks. We are planning mandatory staff meetings which will focus on improving service in all departments. As mentioned in the past, we are still experiencing staffing issues in our kitchen and are hopeful that this will be resolved soon. We appreciate your patience and understanding. One way that you can help us with improving your service and member experience is to download our App and upload a photo. Once you upload your photo, this will transport in real-time to our server point-of-sale computers in the Golf Shop, Halfway House, and Dining Rooms. Other features include: Grab-N-Go food for the Halfway House ordering from the golf course and pool. Your member statement with itemized charges up to date within 24 hours of your activity Updated member roster of all your fellow members ForeTees tee times for golf and simulators bridged into the App Direct link to reservations Upcoming events A la carte lunch and dinner menus Halfway House Menu on the Golf Course In order to keep with our practice of beautifying the golf course we will be removing the Halfway House Menu signs on the course. The menu will be located on all of our electric and pull carts and at the bathrooms on #6 and #13. To place orders, please use the grab-n-go feature on the App or call the Halfway House at (716) 689-9677. Kids’ Programs All of our summer programs have been emailed to you and hard copies of each program are available on our website. If you need any assistance, please feel free to contact the Club Office. You can also register for all the programs at our Family Fun Day at the pool on Memorial Day. Looking forward to seeing you at this event! Frequently asked question! When discussing membership benefits with potential members, a frequently asked question is “what makes TVCC unique?” Believe it or not, this is a very easy question to answer – TVCC has something for everyone! We have programs just for adults, programs just for the kids, and then we have programs and events that bring families together – we are your home away from home!” If you know of anyone who will enjoy membership as much as you do, pass their name and contact information onto me, and I will take care of the rest. We can never thank our moms enough for everything they’ve done and continue to do for us. On behalf of our staff, Happy Mother’s Day to every mom out there!

SOCIAL EVENTS Champagne & Oysters Night Tuesday May 17

Music on the Patio by Gregg Sansone from 5:00pm to 8:30pm 17th Century satirist Jonathon Swift was quoted as saying, “It was a bold man that first ate an oyster”. In the early 19th century oysters were cheap and mainly eaten by the working class. Throughout the 19th century, oyster beds in New York Harbor became the largest source of oysters worldwide. As time pressed on, advancement in cultivation and refrigeration both popularized consumption and greatly reduced food borne illness making oysters the delicacy they are considered today. Please join us at Transit Valley Country Club for our oyster and seafood bar. We will be offering fresh shucked and chilled oysters along with littleneck clams and gulf shrimp. An a la carte dinner special of Crab Stuffed Whole Maine Lobster will be available for your enjoyment! Market Price

Seafood Bar for $45 per person Bottomless Champagne for $25 per person

Canasta Anyone? Yes Anyone! Must be able to participate in all lessons. A 5th lesson will be scheduled at a later date. Thursdays Lessons: May 12th & 19th | June 2nd & 9th 7PM - 9PM Lessons will be given again by Michele Pozarny, but this time they will be offered for men and women, singles and couples. Since several women have recently learned to play, some of their husbands want to learn too. So, we will make a “splash” at Transit Valley with Couples’ Canasta. It is a great game to play after a dinner out with friends. You can enjoy an optional dinner at the club before the lesson. Call the club to register.

A Message from the Women’s Committee Patricia Clabeaux

President

Thank you to all ladies who took the time to answer the member survey specific to the women’s events. I am pleased to announce that of the six-point scale, all but one question scored higher than 5.0. We also received valuable feedback in the comments for golf and other ladies’ activities. As we plan events this year, we will be sure to utilize the feedback. As Spring starts to arrive so does the golf season. The Women’s Committee is preparing for an active golf season, under the leadership of Cindy Fohrd and Karen Dobos. The golf tournaments are scheduled, so watch for articles in the Divot with registration instructions. Continuing our theme of a “welcoming club,” please reach out to either Cindy or Karen if you would like to be introduced to other lady golfers. Regardless of your skill, there are always ladies who would welcome additional players. We have been very fortunate to have had Lynne Stevens and Julie Bradley co-chair the Women’s Golf Charity tournament last year, and again this year, benefiting the Child Advocacy Center at BestSelf. This year, the Golf Charity tournament will take place on August 4th. Watch for details on how you can participate or support the tournament. TVCC members have always been very generous of their time and talent in supporting this event. With that, it is never too early to start thinking about next year. If you know of, or are a part of, a Western New York charity that could be our next focus charity, please let me know. Fellow Golfers, We are looking forward to our Women’s Opening Day “Swing into the New Year” event on May 5th which will be a step aside scramble. Our two-day, two person Spring Bird Tournament will be held May 24th and May 26th for both 18 and 9 hole golfers. If you are interested and don’t have a partner, contact the golf shop to match you with someone! There is also a season long President’s Cup Challenge which is a net match play event; registration deadline on ForeTees is May 22nd. Looking forward to golfing with many of you during the season! Cindy Fohrd, Karen Dobos, and Julie Swiatkowski

A Message from The Golf Professional Jonathan Decker, PGA

Head Golf Professional

The season is in full-swing and the buzz around golf at the club has never been better. By now many of you have gotten familiar with the club’s recently adopted Pace of Play Policy, and it is helping to improve the speed of play during the early part of the season. This document can be found on the ForeTees homepage as well as in the Men’s and Women’s Locker Rooms. With the start of a new golf season upon us, let’s make it a goal for everyone to become a little bit “better” golfer than we were last year. While most people instantly think of lowering their handicap, let’s focus on a few other areas to make us better golfers. In 2022 let’s improve our divot patterns on the range tee, fix an extra pitch mark (or two) on each green, allow faster groups to play through when there are holes open ahead, pick-up our broken tees during the round, rake an extra set of footprints that someone forgot in the bunker, utilize sand bottles a little more, and even get to the first tee a few minutes earlier than we did last year.

New Wedge Models

If you are reading this, it is likely you have played more golf than usual the last few seasons. With that said, it is important to keep an eye on how old or worn your wedges have become, especially the most lofted ones. Just like the tread on your car tires, the groves on our wedges will lose the ability to create friction as they wear down, resulting in more rollout and less stopping power. What is bounce? In simple terms, think of bounce as the club’s resistance to digging into the ground. The higher the degrees of bounce, the higher off the ground the leading edge is and the more it will resist digging. Callaway Full Toe available in Chrome and Black with lofts ranging from 54*-60*, 64*, this wedge features full face scoring lines and a raw face. With full toe shaping, the additional surface area allows for increased spin and more control. Titleist Vokey SM9 new for 2022, the next generation of Vokey wedges feature sharper more durable groves for increased consistency with launch and spin. May

Reciprocal Play

If you are interested in setting up a reciprocal round this season, please contact Assistant Golf Professional Eric Borchert (716)688-7311 or ebrochert@transitvalley.com) preferably a week in advance. To help expedite the booking process, please provide the date, a relative time of day, preferred course, and player names when making your request. As many clubs are busier than they were a few years ago, please be flexible as we work to schedule your reciprocal play.

A Message from the Greens Superintendent Adam Mis This has been a much different spring so far compared to last year. The weather has been very cold and wet. We are still in the process of working between the snow and rain to get the course prepared for the season. We have winter projects that we are currently finishing and hope to have buttoned up soon. Spring aeration is complete, even though the weather did not cooperate to well. We still have cultural practices that we will need to finish once conditions dry out. We turned on the irrigation system last week and have already had three major leaks on the 10th Fairway. We hope that this is not going to be a constant, but this is one of the reasons the system needs to be replaced. The system currently doesn’t have any working isolation valves. When we have a leak like this, we need to turn off the system, drain it, and then pump the water out to make repairs. As you can imagine, these repairs take time to fix. You might be able to see in the pictures that the galvanized pipe is just disintegrating over time. We have been fortunate to put together a talented team for 2022 during this difficult labor market. This current economy is like nothing I have ever seen before, between labor, inflation, cost of goods, and product availability it has been challenging for ours and other industries. We will continue to push ahead and are super excited about this season and looking forward to building on our gains from last year. The club is the talk of the town, and we want Transit Valley to continue to be the place to be in Western NY.
