Anthony J. Delmonte, Jr. I hope you and your families enjoyed the Holiday Season and were able to get to the Club while it was decorated. The staff did an amazing job getting the Club ready for the Holidays and it really turned out terrific. Thank you, Tina and staff!

As of this writing, Governor Hochul placed a mandate for wearing of masks in all public, indoor facilities. This includes private clubs. As you know, TVCC is following guidance set forth by County Executive Poloncarz and Erie County Health Commissioner Burstein. Masks are required in the Club until you are seated. I know this is frustrating for many, but your cooperation is appreciated. Potentially, by the time you read this message, circumstances may change. Tina and her management staff completed operating plans and we will be ready should we need to move to the next phase.

Thank you for adhering to the policy.

The GM search committee reconvened in December and the quest for a new GM will begin in earnest in January. I want to thank Pat Clabeaux for agreeing to chair this committee. Pat has a multitude of experience in the HR and Talent acquisition realm. We are blessed to have Pat on the search team. The other members of the committee are Philp Barbagallo, Maggie Shotwell, Jonathan Sinatra, Randy Kramer, Ned Gian Jr., Ken Myszka, and Eric Balsom. I will serve as Co-chair of the committee. Thank you to everyone for donating your time and talent to this very important endeavor.

The board assesses our alignment with the strategic plan on a regular basis. With the completion of the Clubhouse renovation, we created a first-class facility to support top of the line service in the Clubhouse. In looking to the future and remaining true to the Club’s strategy for first class facilities, last year we enlisted the services of a golf course architect. He provided us with a master plan for the golf course. It will be on display soon. However, prior to executing on this plan, we want to hear from you. Tina and I met with representatives from Club Benchmarking to create another membership survey. While we want to get feedback on overall member experience, this survey will focus on improvements and modifications as laid out in the golf course master plan. We will only carry out work outlined in the master plan if desired by membership. The only caveat is the need to replace our aged and inferior irrigation system. Adam and his staff continually make repair on a daily basis causing disruption to their normal activities. The concern is that eventually the constant breakdowns will negatively impact member experience on the golf course. By the time you read this, you will either have the survey or it will be in your email boxes shortly.

As we turn the calendars to 2022, I am excited for what lies ahead at the Club. We have new facilities, our staff has grown accustomed to the new processes that came with it, membership numbers are on the rise, and we will hear from you about potential new improvements. As I mentioned, in my first message; the best is yet to come.

Happy New Year!

As I have mentioned in the past, there are times when I struggle with writing my Divot Article and sometimes it takes two to three days before it’s complete. This time, it was a little bit easier as I reflect on an unbelievable year. This message is about the “journey”, and I can’t help but think about all the memories that were created during 2021. Our “journey” started with the completion of our clubhouse renovation, and as you know our Centennial Celebration. Participation in all of our events and tournaments were very high and our membership levels have never been better. I wanted to share some special pictures of our “journey” and hopefully they will remind you of our incredible year!

I also wanted to take this opportunity to thank the Women’s Committee, and Board of Governors for their support, especially Jonathan Sinatra. You helped me through a very difficult time when my dad passed away which is something that I will never forget. It has been a pleasure to work alongside you every day for the past two years. We definitely experienced some challenges, but in the long run, those challenges became achievements! And, of course, many thanks to all of our members for your patience, understanding and most of all loyalty!

Special thanks to our entire staff for their hard work, dedication, and support. Your commitment to providing a special experience for each, and every event during our Centennial Celebration did not go unnoticed!

As we begin the New Year, please remember: • Make advanced reservations which are very helpful and although we are fortunate to have great staff, we are still experiencing labor shortages in the kitchen. We are continuing to ask for your patience and understanding while we navigate through the ongoing pandemic.

• Denim is acceptable and must be in excellent condition, and dark in color. Denim should also not include holes or rips, fading or stonewash look, and frayed material. For men, denim must be paired with any tucked-in and collared shirt, sport coat or sweater. The Tommy Bahama or Un-Tuckit Shirts are permitted. Unacceptable – Yoga pants, leggings, athletic attire, t-shirts, denim skirts and dresses.

• The Clubhouse will be closed beginning Sunday, January 9 and reopen Wednesday, January 19. We will be doing some deep cleaning and finishing a little remodeling of the Club Offices.

Employee of the Month Program Mr. Delmonte graciously donated his President’s Parking Spot for our “Employee of the Month Program.” This program will recognize on employee, each month who goes above and beyond the call of duty. We are happy to report that our first “Employee of the Month” for 2022 is Veronica “Ronnie” who is our Halfway House Manager in the summer and works in the Kitchen during the offseason prepping for parties, assisting our pastry chef with making desserts and sometimes, even washing dishing when we are shorthanded.

Thank you, Veronica and congratulations! We are continually impressed by your hard work and dedication. You are an extraordinary member of our staff, and we are very pleased to take this opportunity to recognize you for your efforts!

We are in the process of planning all of our Social Events for 2022! Back by popular demand is Cornhole in the Ballroom, Kids’ Cooking Classes, Wine Dinners, Kids’ Movie Nights, Trivia Night, Family Fun Night on Memorial Day, and of course Bocce, Blues and Brews. New events include a Murder Mystery, Whiskey’s of the World, Culinary Boot Camp hosted by Chef Dan, Taco’s and Tequila, Men’s and Ladies’ Night Out in the Simulators and much, much more. Look for a list of all of our social events in the March Divot.

Jim has been a member of the Grounds’ Crew and has provided 20 years of hard work and dedication in helping to keep our golf course looking perfect during the summer and in the winter, you will find him shoveling our sidewalks and snowplowing our parking lot! On behalf of the members, and staff, special thanks to you for so many years of outstanding service and we hope you know how much we appreciate your enthusiasm and work commitment.

Finally, it has been an honor and privilege to serve as your General Manager for the past couple of years. I am very grateful for the opportunity and look forward to the next “journey.”

A Message from the Women’s Committee Patricia Clabeaux

President

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season with your families and loved ones. The Club was certainly a buzz of activity. It was so nice to see so many members enjoying the Club. With that, I would like to extend a huge thank you to Julie Bradley and Kelly Longo for organizing the women’s wreath making evening. It was a fun event, and it showed that we certainly have some talented ladies.

Now that the holiday season is behind us, we are working on our winter events. There is excitement in the Women’s Committee to offer a variety of events that will appeal to all women of the Club. During my first couple months as Women’s Committee President, I have had an opportunity to meet many members that I did not know previously, by them wishing me success in my new role. That is the environment we have at TVCC. A warm and welcoming place to meet other members and socialize. In planning events, it is my hope that all ladies feel welcome to come and “hang out with us.” Even if you don’t know many other members, please let me, or another member of the Women’s Committee, know and we will be sure to introduce you to others. Our next event, coming in February, is an outdoor activity at the Club (please refer to the separate article for details).

Finally, you will be receiving a survey soon from the Club asking for your feedback and suggestions on women’s activities and events. We encourage all ladies of the Club to complete the survey so that we can best meet your needs. Thanks and stay warm!!

Women’s TVCC Bowling League

The TVCC Women’s Bowling League Fall Session ended December 8th with a no-tap tournament day. The winning team included Amy Gary, Mary Jane Myszka, Pat Julian, and Sharon Suchak. Paula Orlowski had the High Scratch Game for the Session scoring a 201, as well as the High Scratch Series with a 522! We celebrated the successful session with a Christmas luncheon at TVCC on December 15th.

The TVCC Women’s Bowling League Spring Session begins on January 5th and runs through March 9th, 2022. We always welcome new members and their friends to our league, which bowls at Transit Lanes on Wednesday mornings.

A Message from The Golf Professional Jonathan Decker, PGA

Head Golf Professional

This past year was another record setting season for golf at Transit Valley. We had double digit increases in rounds played over last season, healthy membership growth, which helped to increase participation in almost all golf events in 2021. Over the next few months, I will be working with Golf Chairman Derek Zgoda and the rest of the committee to plan a great season of events for men, women, and juniors. We will also be working to implement policies to improve pace of play and address potential handicap issues. While writing this article, my wife and I welcomed a baby boy, Theodore “Teddy” Jordan Decker born on December 14th at Sisters Hospital. While born a few weeks earlier than his expected due date, he and my wife are doing well and spending some quality time together.

During our recent Member Appreciation Night at the Golf Shop, Erikson Neilans was the lucky winner of a $100 Gift Certificate. All attendees were entered into a drawing and thank you to those that braved the snowy night. On a similar note, Laura DiGiulio had her ticket selected for a $100 Gift Certificate to the Pro Shop in the “Go Green & Win” raffle by way of purchasing a centennial water bottle during the month of December.

The Golf Shop will be closed for the winter starting January 1st and reopen on Wednesday, March 17th (St. Patrick’s Day).

Golf Simulator Hours Due to Club shutdown, simulators will be closed Sunday, January 9th until Tuesday, January 18th and will reopen Wednesday, January 19th.

While doing so, please make sure that all clubs, balls, and shoes are clean to help protect the screens and keep the area looking new. Dirty clubs and golf balls can scratch and stain the hitting screen.

A Message from The Golf Professional Cont.

Off-Season Goals

Whether we like it or not, we have an off-season for our golf games while living in Buffalo. We can use this time to our advantage to improve our technique and physical skills without having to worry about posting a score (which we can’t do in Western New York until April 15th anyways). For most players, including myself, using the downtime to build or maintain strength and flexibility is paramount to preparing for a great season, as well as staying active during the winter months. If a player can gain 5 mph of swing speed with a driver, that equates to 7.5 mph in ball speed, which ultimately will net 15 additional yards off the tee. Apply the same distance gains to the entire set and the player is now hitting a 9-iron into the green as opposed to a 7-iron. This change will likely result in a reduction of 2-3 strokes per round based on statistical data.

Supply Chain Issues

The golf industry is no different than the rest of the world when it comes to supply chain issues.

As most of Southeast Asia experienced significant lockdowns over the summer, combined with increased demand, this will have a huge impact on supply of many items in golf shops from footwear and apparel to grips, to clubs, and almost everything in between. Several larger companies within the industry have reduced the number of products they will offer in 2022 to generate enough inventory in key styles and models. The cost of raw materials, freight, and labor have all risen substantially the last two years, and despite the concentrated efforts of many vendors, slight price increases are expected in almost all product categories going forward. Your patience on special orders and continued support of the Transit Valley Golf Shop is greatly appreciated.

Junior Golf

Through my training with TPI, I have been able to develop a strong understanding of what can help make your son or daughter a successful junior golfer. The best thing you can do, is try and develop a well-rounded athlete by participating in as many activities as possible. The concept of specializing on a single sport from an early age has been dispelled by almost all leading instructors and trainers, with over-use injuries and burnout key drawbacks. If we look at the leading stars of the PGA Tour, you will find almost all of them excelled at multiple sports into high school before deciding golf was the path they wanted to pursue.

The following winter activities will help develop the athletic skills found in many great golfers.

A Message from the Greens Superintendent Adam Mis We have been experiencing great weather this fall and early winter here in Buffalo. We have been able to start addressing some of the master plan work that our Architect has designed to help make the course better for our members.

My assistant Ian Durgan has accepted the Superintendent position at Shelridge Country Club in Medina, NY. He has been with me at Transit Valley this season and many years prior at my last Club. We wish him the best of luck on his new endeavor, and we are working on changes in our management team currently and will update in the future.

I will be approaching my one-year Anniversary, and I am excited about the things we were able to accomplish in such a short time. I want to thank the board of directors, the members, and the Club staff in making this one of the best years of my career. It’s been crazy at times, but that’s what makes it fun also.

I hope you had a wonderful holiday season, and we are looking forward to a great 2022 at Transit Valley Country Club.

We are also rerouting the cart path behind the #2 tee

We had very windy conditions in December that caused weak trees to take a beating.

We will try to address the dead, dying, or damaged trees this winter.

We have been addressing drainage issues on the course. The Club installed

a large infrastructure drainage system years back that helped to remove water off the property. This system was designed with solid pipe and catch basins to collect water. We are addressing wet areas with perforated pipe and stone to help collect the water to get into the main drainage system and off the property. We have currently installed drainage on #3 approach, #4 rough, #5 approach, #6 fairway, #15 fairway, and #17 tee.

We have installed a new cart path at #17 tee. We are looking to build a new forward tee (per the master plan) to not only help with proper distance, but also to address the lack of usable space. The new tee would be located on the current cart path, so we rerouted with a new path.

Dress Code and Denim Policy Grill Room, Patio, & Simulator Lounge Country Club appropriate denim is defined as properly sized, in excellent condition, and dark in color(white or black denim is also acceptable). Country Club appropriate denim does not include holes or rips, fading or stonewash look, frayed material, denim shorts, skirts, dresses, work type denim shirts, or jeans that are worn extremely low cut. Tasteful and appropriate shirts and shoes must be worn. For men, denim must be paired with any tucked-in and collared shirt, sport coat or sweater.

Country Club Attire is also deemed appropriate which is defined as: Bermuda length shorts, sundresses, collared shirts for men and appropriate women’s attire.

1921 Room (Previously the Formal Dining Room) & Ballroom Country Club Attire will be acceptable consisting of collared shirts for men and appropriate women’s attire. Sport coats are optional but encouraged.

The intent is to not allow denim. However, denim will be permissible if the Grill Room has reached its maximum capacity.

Club/Special Events Dress codes will be defined for all Club/Special Events and will be communicated in the newsletter.

Members are encouraged to consider common sense when making casual-attire decisions. We prefer our members dress-up rather than dress-down when visiting the Club. While we expect that members will use good taste and judgment, the Board has directed Club Management to discreetly review any inappropriate casual attire decisions directly with the member to ensure that the Club maintains a casual environment that is enjoyable for everyone.
