The word “flavor” is most commonly used to describe the way something tastes, but it can also be used to describe how someone dresses, or the way they come across with their vibe. In our case, Oside Flavor represents Oceanside to a “T”—and you know we are chock full of flavor. We take the best of what our city has to offer—from top chefs, amazing musicians, craft brewers, and you the good people of Oceanside—and put them all together for an evening of food and fun at the one-and-only and Goat Hill Park.

It’s been nearly two years now since we’ve done Oside Flavor, and although the world is still in a strange space, we feel like the time is now to celebrate everything that Oceanside has to offer. Some might say that a large gathering is not the best idea in the current climate, but we have faith that everything will work out. The event is outdoors, and whatever your stance on the vaccine is, we’ll be leaning on you to sanitize often, wear a mask if needed, and “live as one” for the evening. We can’t stop having fun forever—am I right?

We here at The Osider are looking forward to a night filled with good friends, amazing music, great food, and cold drinks. You can purchase tickets at theosider.com. Mitchell Maynard is one of Oceanside’s unsung hometown heroes. As the Director of Facilities, Maintenance, and Operations at Oceanside Unified School District (OUSD)—he keeps the district running smoothly for our children, and all its employees. Mitch is charged with approximately 125 employees maintaining 26 facilities in Oceanside, and on Camp Pendleton. “Everything related to buildings—we do it all,” Mitch proclaimed. Maintaining every single facility is daunting, and since so much of the labor is behind-the-scenes—it’s unsung work, but not being noticed is how Mitch and his team know they’re doing their job well … because everything works!

A native of Oceanside, his mother was a first-generation Mexican citizen, and his father arrived through the military. He attended the former Pacifica Elementary, Lincoln Middle School, and graduated from El Camino High School. After high school, Mitchell joined the Air Force and was stationed in Phoenix, Arizona where he worked on F-16 aircraft weapon systems. He even hosted a radio show on Power 92.3 in Phoenix called Project Groove. After the Air Force, he received his degree in Electrical Engineering.

In 2012, Mitch made the move he knew he

always wanted to make—back home to Oceanside with his wife and six children. “Oceanside is a true melting pot. I’ve been all around the world, and this is one of the most diverse communities.

I knew I wanted to raise my kids here.” He began his career with OUSD in 2015 as a Fire, Security,

Mitch is also currently working on his Master’s Degree in School Business Leadership.

With school back in session full-time, Mitch’s crew has been busy upscaling the facilities to operate at full capacity. “While we were closed for almost one year during the quarantine, things were being maintained, but at half capacity,”

Mitch explained. An ongoing part of his job is the modernization of the many aging buildings in the district. Currently, Jefferson Junior High, and Pablo Tac Elementary (formerly San Luis Rey Elementary) are being modernized. He’s proud of the work that was already completed on his alma mater—El Camino High School gym, and theater.

One aspect of the educational system Mitch would love to return to OUSD is comprehensive ROP programs—giving students hands-on experience for essential trade jobs. Mitch loved Auto Shop in high school, and those are the classes students can learn skills they can transfer to future careers. And most of the technical jobs from trade schools are the jobs Mitch currently hires. He views this as an opportunity for his students to give back to their community. “My team is pretty awesome. Most of us are part of this community and we’re from Oceanside. We’re here because we love this place and want to make it better. I want to make a pathway for people—I see how to create job opportunities in our community from a different perspective.”

SOLO CLEANUPS – The City’s Green Oceanside team encourages individuals to “pack in, pack out” and take the initiative and responsibility to keep their own neighborhood, park, or beach clean! You can even go a step further and do a solo cleanup wherever you are. It’s easy– grab some gloves, bags, or buckets to collect debris and bring home what you collect to sort into your carts! Don’t forget to share your journey with @ Oceanside_Water on Instagram or @CityOceanside on Facebook to inspire others to do the same in their community.

QUARTERLY NEIGHBORHOOD CLEANUPS – New this year, the City’s Green Oceanside team will host Quarterly Neighborhood Cleanups at City Parks and Community Resource Centers in collaboration with Neighborhood Services and Code Enforcement. These cleanups are a great way for residents to come together to remove debris from local neighborhoods, and even bring gently used items to local donation entities on-site.

Grab your gloves, sturdy shoes, and a reusable water bottle for these events! Dumpsters will be available for the recycling of e-waste, and 14

disposal of junk, debris, trash, and large landfill items. Please note, household hazardous waste and sharps will not be accepted.

For more information on Quarterly Neighborhood Cleanups, and for upcoming events, please visit the events page at www.GreenOceanside.org ANNUAL WATERWAY CLEANUPS – Green Oceanside promotes and facilitates two annual volunteer cleanup events in the City’s waterways

and open space areas, in coordination with I Love a Clean San Diego. These events include the Creek to Bay Cleanup every April, and Coastal Cleanup Day each September. Both events are a great way to participate in removing litter and debris in your own neighborhood or along the City’s waterways. Over the years, thousands of pounds of debris have been removed from Oceanside waterways and we could not have done it without the help of so many dedicated volunteers! Be sure to mark your calendars for the 37th Annual Coastal Cleanup Day scheduled on September 18th, 2021.

PRIVATE GROUP CLEANUPS — Are you interested in organizing your own cleanup event? The City’s Special Events Staff accepts requests for private cleanup events, for 30 or more participants, at

available City neighborhoods, parks, and beaches.

Three cleanup permits are accepted each month and events are processed on a first-come, firstserved basis. Applications should be received 60 days prior to the event to provide adequate time for processing, scheduling and coordination.

Remember to secure cleanup supplies such as buckets, reusable gloves, and trash pickers in addition to Waste Management disposal services to safely dispose of waste collected.

Years ago, Sean Hallman was listening to NPR on his way to work—something he doesn’t normally do—when he got some “serendipitous” inspiration: “They were talking to a guy that sold his gym because New York was offering tax breaks for people to start distilleries before prohibition. And, a reporter asked him, ‘What do you know about distilling?’ and he said, ‘Absolutely nothing, but some of the best whiskey in the world is made by people in the hills of Kentucky with a third grade education.’ So, that’s a similar approach that I took.”

Contrary to his modesty, Hallman has been making booze as a hobby for over a decade—starting with home brewing beer, then to a short stint in moonshine, quickly followed by distilling craft spirits from his Oceanside-based distillery.

Tucked away in Oceanside Business Park off Industry Street and Oceanside Boulevard, Hallman and his wife, Lisa Ireland, co-run Shadow Ridge Spirits Company. They make ultra small batches of high quality craft spirits, and have turned their warehouse space into a fully functioning distillery, offering curious booze enthusiasts tours and tastings.

Their lineup of spirits include five whiskeys: bourbon, rye, single malt, American single malt, and rice, three rums: light, dark, and navy strength—a gin and an agave.

“By doing small batches, we can pretty much bottle on demand and sell it by the bottle and everyone seems to be happy,” Hallman said. “And, it lets us experiment. This batch of whiskey bourbon is a little different than the first batch, and then I have another batch of bourbon coming out that’s probably going to be a little different, too. I think people looking for craft spirits are looking for those little nuances from bottle to bottle.”

Even though the batches are small, Hallman’s attention to detail is widely the opposite.

He uses three types of sugars for his rums— Demerara sugar (sugarcane), Piloncillo sugar (cone-shaped dehydrated cane sugar), and highgrade molasses. For his whiskeys, he leverages his brewing background to add an extra touch.

“There are so many whiskeys and they’re all so unique whether it’s a single malt or barley, a bourbon, or a rye—you know, just like beer, there’s so many different types of stouts,” Hallman said. “I use a lot of barley based on my brewing background.

Most bourbons are just corn, rye and wheat, or barely, but this bourbon I have now is actually corn, rye, wheat, and three types of barely.”

It took four batches for Hallman to nail down the right taste of the botanicals for his gin, which he proudly stated is not outsourced (none of his spirits are). And he uses a variety of yeasts: Belgian ale yeast for his agave and all of his whiskeys— except his rice whiskey (he uses a sake yeast for that one), and white wine yeast for his rums.

Once his spirits are in American Oak barrels, Hallman judges them by maturity—not age—relying on his refined sense of taste and smell to tell him when his spirits are ready.

Even though Hallman is dedicated to his craft, his main goal is to keep it fun. After all, this is his hobby. He and his wife work full time and mostly put hours in at the distillery on the weekends— after they’ve slept in, of course.

“We wanted to keep it small because we wanted to keep it a hobby. As soon as we start talking about hiring employees, then it’s just no—so we want to keep it manageable,” Hallman said. “And it’s nice also, we have a place in Maine, we just went back for a few and a half weeks, and I want that flexibility.”

Keeping it small not only benefits Hallman and Ireland, but also the people that come to their distillery.

“Another thing we want to keep with our size is that when you come here to visit for a tour and tasting, you’re actually talking to the distillers which isn’t always the case,” Hallman said. “I’ve worked at distilleries and those people doing the tours never talked to the distillers—they talked to me.”

Outside of the distillery, Hallman is a veteran having served as a Naval Surface Warfare Officer.

He still works for the Department of Navy, and Ireland works as a teacher. They offer private tastings by appointment (book by phone or DM on Instagram), and all of their spirits are available for purchase through their website.

HOW TO MAKE CHARRED KALE AND CHICKPEA PURÉE WITH BABY CREAMER POTATOES AND CHERRY TOMATOES With Chef Ryan Orlando from The PLOT PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER

“ I decided to do this recipe because it's a simple, healthy, and fresh dish you can make at home. In each dish, we like to highlight the farms in which these items come from. In this dishes case we have, Kale from Stehly Farms, Tomatoes from Community Roots Farm, and Wasabi Arugula from our very own farm on the patio of the restaurant.”— Chef Ryan

This recipe will make roughly five cups of purée.

Ingredients

1 bunch kale 1 quart canned Garbanzo beans (Aquafaba and all) 3/4 lemon (for juicing) 1 cup filtered water 1/4 cup EVOO Salt to taste

For each individual dish, you’ll use six creamer potatoes, four cherry tomatoes cut in half (or you can just cut larger heirloom tomatoes into nice chunks), two tablespoons of charred kale purée, one teaspoon of EVOO, and one-and-a-half teaspoons of fresh lemon juice and a pinch of salt. Toss all that together softly in a stainless steel bowl.

Place nicely on top of purée and garnish with arugula.

Preparation 1. Wash kale and then toss in EVOO and place in grill, in broiler, or anywhere to get a real nice char on it.

2. Once charred, take off heat, and rough chop it up—stems and all.

3. Place garbanzo beans in blender with lemon juice, charred kale, water, and salt. Blend until you get it as smooth as possible. Make sure you season as you go to get it to your liking.

4. For the creamer potatoes, wash them off them put them in a pot with cold water and salt.

5. Put it on the stove and bring up to rolling boil, and then turn in down to a simmer. You just want to cook these until they’re tender. Maybe twenty minutes or so, but keep your eye on them.

6. Once cooked, strain the water, and place on a tray or pan, so they’re not stacked on top of each other and let them cool. As for the cherry tomatoes, just wash and cut them right when you’re ready to use them.

7. Once potatoes are cooled, take a small bowl and toss in the cut tomatoes and whole baby creamer potatoes with lemon juice, EVOO, and salt.

8. Take a spoon full (three tablespoons) of the purée and place it in the middle of the plate, and use the bottom of the spoon to spread the purée in a circle.

9. Once spread out, place potatoes and tomatoes however you’d like in the purée.

10. Top with arugula and serve with a spoon.

Here at The Osider, one of our favorite aspects of our magazine is being able to bring attention to Oceanside natives who’ve achieved success while growing up involved in our community. This issue we’re happy to highlight Ashley Holthaus—a woman born into an Oceanside family who spent her childhood on our beaches with her two siblings. Ashley practiced piano at a young age and in high school played volleyball, water polo, and was a member of the swim team.

Ultimately, her love of surfing kept returning her to our shores, and at seventeen years old, she decided to try out for a lifeguard position with Oceanside City Beaches. “It was very competitive and mostly male dominated at the time. Competing against over 50 others was so challenging and the longest day ever, but I landed my dream job,” said Ashley. She was hired with a rookie class of twelve and remembers that time as exciting, hard,

and unexpected. “Some days, it’d be rescues all day, some days it was all medical calls, and some days I wouldn’t even have to leave my station.”

Ashley would also go on to teach Junior Lifeguards.

She attended South Oceanside Elementary, Lincoln Middle School, and Oceanside High.

During her last year of college, she accepted a job as a receptionist and office assistant at a small upstart that’d eventually become our very own locally founded behemoth of a company, Brixton Ltd. Founded by Oceanside resident David Stoddard and his partners, the company started in a small garage selling vintage inspired hats and has since exploded into an internationallyknown lifestyle and clothing brand. Brixton is currently undergoing construction on a retail location here in town.

While Ashley was finishing up her business marketing degree, she had to work online and at 20

night to juggle her new job—all while finishing school. “My roles included everything from data entry, packing orders, accounting, and travel booking to taking out the trash and cleaning the kitchen,” she explained. “We only had about 40 employees at the time!” As Brixton grew and shifted into new directions, she was eventually promoted to International Marketing/PR Coordinator, which morphed into Global Marketing Coordinator.

After nine solid years with the company, Ashley’s current title at Brixton is Brand Marketing Manager. She oversees public relations, brand partnerships, influencer marketing, and social media. She added, “I’m so grateful I was able to start with a company at the time of its inception and learn all aspects of the business. I’ve been lucky enough to travel the world with the Brixton team and I have had many memorable experiences and made forever friendships.”

Things You Didn’t Know About

Did you know that Oceanside has been a popular site for film and television studios for over 100 years? For almost as long as Hollywood has been making movies, Oceanside has been a film locale, and our hotels have been used to house cast, directors, and crew. For decades, our locals have played extras while Hollywood has used our beaches, Mission San Luis Rey, and other landmarks as backdrops. Oceanside has also been a getaway for movie stars and entertainers.

Beginning in 1914, the Laskey Feature Film Company stopped in town with film director Cecile B. De Mille. Noted as the “founding father of the American cinema,” De Mille made 70 films between 1914 and 1958, and it’s noteworthy that one of his first was filmed partly in Oceanside. De Mille, a registered guest at the Oceanside Beach Hotel, was here to film David Belasco’s drama, The Rose of the Rancho featuring scenes from the Mission San Luis Rey and Pala The Beach Hotel, where De Mille frequented several times, was located at Third (Pier View Way) and Pacific Streets. This three-story hotel opened in 1904 and was originally named the “El San Luis Rey Hotel” after the Mission San Luis Rey.

In 1917, the Signal Film Company used the San Luis Rey River Bridge for the scene of a “thrilling wreck.” Directed by J. P. McGowan, The Lost Express took advantage of the old cement bridge over the San Luis Rey River that had washed away in the Flood of 1916. The film company ran a 1913 Studebaker off the north approach. The Oceanside Blade described the scene in which the two stars put themselves in danger: “When the car started, it was occupied by Miss Helen Holmes and Eddie Hearn, and driven by a dummie chauffeur. In leaving the car, Eddie Hearn had a narrow squeak from taking a tumble himself. The auto jumped in the air, then made two complete somersaults, and landed on the wheels right side up, without puncturing a single tire.” After filming, the film company donated the wrecked car to local resident Brownie Dodge of the Oceanside Garage.

Universal Pictures filmed scenes for a western called The Love Brand on Rancho Santa Margarita in 1923, and it was noted that it featured

a cattle roundup and “real buckaroo work.” The film starred Roy Stewart who played “Don Jose O’Neil.” The local newspaper noted that Stewart, a San Diego native and an expert horseman “spent much of his time on the famous Santa Marguerite (sic) rancho, one of the biggest and most famous in the West. When the film was released, it played at Oceanside’s Elysium Theater in November of that year, and the theater owner noted in his weekly newspaper ad that the movie was locally filmed.

It was a crowd favorite, and Oceanside residents never tired of seeing the local landscape and notable landmarks on the screen.

The Tiffany Company of the Bud Borsky Productions filmed a 1927 production on the 30

ship “George Billings” owned by local Harry Brodie.

It was used to take groups out to sea to fish, but for its Hollywood debut the boat was fitted with a new “suit of sails.” The cast included Montagu Love, Dorothy Sebastian, and Ray Haller. They along with the film crew, stayed in Oceanside. The film was released as The Haunted Ship and was based on a story White and Yellow written by Jack London.

Many Oceanside residents became movie extras in the spring of 1936 while shooting for the picture Vigilantes by the Republic Production Company, with the Mission San Luis Rey used as a background. The plot “centered on early California history … when the Fathers were having a struggle to keep the missions free from corruption, and invasion

by the Indians.” Many local residents appeared in the picture, including well-known resident Bill Lawrence. The film was released with a new title The Vigilantes Are Coming, and was a serial with twelve parts, many of which feature the Mission San Luis Rey, its bell tower, and interior. The film’s star was Robert Livingston, who played a masked vigilante called “The Eagle,” and was a precursor to the more widely known “Lone Ranger” with his mask and white horse.

In 1949, Sands of Iwo Jima starring John Wayne was filmed at Camp Pendleton, for which Wayne received his first Academy Award nomination.

Other war films, including Flying Leathernecks, The Outsider, Battle Cry, and Retreat, Hell! were filmed at Camp Pendleton.

Attack of the Killer Tomatoes is a movie “just as bad as it sounds” that was filmed in Oceanside and San Diego in 1978. Although a very broad and silly “horror” film, a very serious and near-deadly helicopter crash occurred during filming. While filming at the Wackerman Ranch off North River Road, a helicopter piloted by Thomas Watts with two actors—George Wilson and Jack Riley—crash landed and burst into flames. All three men escaped without serious injury, but the crash captured on cameras was incorporated into the film.

In 1984, filming began on Camp Pendleton’s beach for a television miniseries based on James A. Michner’s fictional account of the American space program, which covered the years after World War II to the Apollo moon landings. Despite the crowds enjoying a summer day, the film crew captured footage of vintage planes in flight simulating air combat.

In 1985, filming began of what would become a box office blockbuster. When it was released on May 12, 1986, the film launched actor Tom Cruise to super stardom. Top Gun was shot on location at Miramar, San Diego, and Oceanside. The “Top Gun” house at the corner of Seagaze and Pacific streets was featured as the home of Cruise’s love interest, played by Kelly McGillis. Scenes in this popular movie featured Cruise on his motorcycle racing Oceanside’s beautiful palm-lined Pacific Street overlooking the ocean. Today, the newly restored house has been moved just one block north and sits between two new resort hotels.

Other movies and television series include Veronica Mars starring Kristen Bell first aired on the UPN television network in 2004. Many of the series’ scenes were filmed at Stu Segall Productions in San Diego, and most of the scenes featuring “Neptune High” were filmed in Oceanside. The 31

director liked that it was “a seaside town that still feels like middle-class people live there.” To Save A Life was filmed in 2009 and featured a large cast of locals, and was filmed at various North County locations, including Oceanside High School, MiraCosta College, and Eternal Hills Memorial Park.

Scenes of the popular 2010 cheerleading movie Bring It On starring Kirsten Dunst and Gabrielle Union were filmed at the Oceanside Amphitheater.

It was so popular it became a franchise with a series of sequels.

Of course, many Osiders have tuned into to watch TNT’s Animal Kingdom and the fictional Cody family. Viewers from around the world get to see some of Oceanside’s best assets—the Pier, Harbor, and Strand. Filming has been done in over 70 locations in our City, including Real Surf Shop and Surf Bowl on Coast Highway.

Character Daren Cody’s fictional bar has been a popular location at 314 Wisconsin, as well as a beach cottage on the South Strand.

No doubt our City will “star” in another cinematic feature soon. It’s still just as thrilling to see Oceanside through the lens of a movie camera as it was in the early days of film.

The beauty of Oceanside’s landscapes were captured by a myriad of talented artists in summer of 2021 when Oceanside Museum of Art hosted its inaugural Plein Air Festival. Plein Air in French translates to “outdoors,” and for one week artists and easels adorned Oceanside painting sunsets, beaches, parks, and buildings—offering a unique and ethereal painted narrative of our beloved city.

were submitted for jurying, with 60 art sales, and 40 artworks selected for the exhibition. Through October 10, 2021, Oceanside Museum of Art invites the public to the Plein Air Festival Juried Exhibition to enjoy (and bid) on the original pieces of art.

The inaugural Plein Air Festival began on July 24, 2021, when registered artists checked-in at Oceanside Museum of Art (OMA) on the perfectly paintable day. The weeklong event ran from July 24 to July 31, and artists could choose any outdoor space to paint in Oceanside. The arts were alive for that week, and the overall vibe of the event was palpable throughout Oceanside. “The chance encounters that residents and visitors had with artists painting all over Oceanside was an eyeopener for people to witness the intersection of art and everyday life. What a perfect event for the crazy times we are navigating—outdoor inspiration for people to create or to be able to witness to the creative process, all while celebrating what Oceanside has to offer,” said Maria Mingalone, Executive Director.

Two years in the making, OMA’s Artist Alliance initiated the festival concept as one didn’t exist in San Diego County. As the event neared, the

staff of OMA dedicated countless hours to its completion. That includes approximately 65 dedicated volunteers that helped plan and execute the event.

Since OMA was hosting the event for the first time, they made it match their mission. “We had a blank slate to do this event, and we wanted to make

it as accessible as possible with an invitation to all artists at all skill level—including students.

That also aligns with our values and the values of O ceanside. We’re a museum for all artists,” explained Katie Dolgov, Exhibitions Manager & Registrar at OMA. As part of the plein air artist community, Joyce Trinh utilized social media, including WhatsApp to unite plein air artists. Just a few hours after the festival began, Joyce returned to OMA with a completed masterpiece, “Oceanside Pier Boardwalk.” “I paint three to four hours per week, and enjoys painting with other artists because I want to have fun with my friends and encourage fellow artists,” said Trinh.

Local artist Brady Wilmott immediately set up an easel in front of the museum and got to painting. “I’m not a plein air painter, but it’s a good way to try something new and think outside the 36

box of regular painting.” Another artist from Mission Valley, Liz Lancaster, has been painting with oils for twelve years: “I started painting outside during the pandemic just as an opportunity to get outside.

It’s such a different way to make art. I enjoy the challenge of chasing the light and getting out to explore and get inspired by other artists.”

The weeklong itinerary included workshops, paint outs, artist talks, art sales, and a quick paint challenge at Mission San Luis Rey. There was something for every artist and community member, even a virtual talk by festival judge and renowned impressionism authority, Jean Stern. The busy weeklong itinerary included: Workshops: Each ticketed workshop sold out and included the topics hosted by renowned plein air artists: Painting at the Harbor with Mark Fehlman; Capturing the Character of Indigenous Plants in Plein Air Painting with Margaret Larlham; Exploring Watercolors and Luminous Landscapes with Shuang Li; and Painting Urban Landscapes with Danny Griego.

The Quick Paint Challenge: A free, communitybuilding event offered to all registered painters. A total of 117 artists signed-up and had two hours to paint Mission San Luis Rey and its grounds. First prize went to Ryan Jensen for the mission quick

paint. Jensen is a visiting artist from Humboldt, and was also an overall award winner for his portrait “Eager Painter” (on display at OMA and available to purchase). Jensen traveled to Oceanside exclusively for the event and regularly takes part in the plein art festival circuit. “I love to get out and meet artists. I spend a week in a town and get to learn about the artists, and the area,” said Jensen.

Paint Outs: Contributing to the overall community of plein air artists painting throughout Oceanside during the week, three community “Paint Outs” were held at various locations. The public was welcome to watch from a safe social distance for the paint outs held at El Camino Country Club, Roberts Cottages, and downtown’s Farmer’s Market.

Plein Air Art Mart: Artwork not selected for the exhibition were part of a one-day sale directly behind the museum. Masterpieces were available at all price points and the event was open to the public.

As the week of plein air painting culminated, the artists chose their best work (two allowed per artist) to be submitted for the juried show. Overall, 40 artworks were juried by Jean Stern, Scott W. Prior, and Maria Mingalone. The Plein Air Festival Awards Celebration on Saturday, July 31st captured the success of the momentous week where the artists, and art aficionados (including Mayor Sanchez) came together to celebrate their accomplishments and learn the grand prize 39

winners, including Best In Show. Durre Waseem took home Best In Show with the masterpiece “Meet Me by the Pepper Tree.”

Oceanside Museum of Art is extremely proud of their inaugural event success, and plans to make it a yearly tradition. The 2021 Plein Air Festival Juried Exhibition can be viewed online or in person, and runs through October 10, 2021.

All proceeds from the event benefit the artists, and OMA’s Exhibition Fund.

In Oceanside, we’re very fortunate to enjoy a consistently gentle climate, but that doesn’t change the fact that we’re reminded almost daily of major weather-related catastrophes in this country and around the world. Climate change is undoubtedly real, and every time I’m able to meet another small business owner who built their business based on planet sustainability, I feel an even greater sense of pride in our residents and our community.

Ransack Vintage & Handcrafted is a local boutique that sells used clothing, as well as a plethora of antique and unique items. They carry men’s, women’s, and children’s sizes, and you could spend an entire afternoon wandering around and getting lost in an amazing array of jewelry, clothes, bags, shoes, pet products, records, home décor, and furniture.

Owner Scout Frank majored in Environmental Science with a desire to maintain a career that’d spread awareness of the industries that directly contribute to the degradation of the Earth, and offer an alternative to the constant consumption of our natural resources. She was raised on a ranch in Santa Barbara surrounded by dogs, horses, goats, and chickens, and that western motif is seen throughout the store with its unique vintage leather goods and chunky turquoise jewelry pieces.

After selling items online and storing boxes and boxes of her procured merchandise in her garage, Scout finally found her perfect location on South Coast Highway, and along with her store manager Sami Ghomeshi, she opened the doors of Ransack in April 2019. Her goal is to promote quality over quantity, and she finds her pieces locally and out-of-state at garage and estate sales as well as the few secret sources she prefers to keeps close to her vest. She focuses on vintage and up-cycled items, as well as showcasing some small local brands such as Seager Company, Solitude Ceramics, and Sterling Trading Co. They also carry their signature Ransack merchandise made by Brothers Design Co. Shopransack.com offers shipping options and features seasonal pieces and “look books” for inspiration. Buying appointments are available for individuals looking to recycle clothing and items from their own collections.

Scout spent her childhood visiting her grandparents here in Oceanside, and decided to plant her own roots here six years ago. “Oceanside is a really special community that has welcomed me and my shop with open arms,” she said.

“There’s so much creativity and passion flowing through this city, and it’s great watching friends open thriving businesses in this beautiful, growing beach town that can bring us all together.”

Oceanside is one the best places in San Diego for outdoor enthusiasts from all walks of life. There’re so many different disciplines to enjoy here. Long time surfer and action sports Industry veteran, Guy Trotter grew up surfing here in O’side and quickly realized that there was a serious need to keep our skin safe from the harsh elements of the sun.

In 2013, Guy launched Surface Sunscreen after noticing a hole in the market for a cooler, more relatable brand than the bigger corporate giants available at the time. “Oceanside has always been a blue-collar town with deep roots in the beach community,” said Guy. When the opportunity presented itself, it was a “no-brainer” to open his first concept store here. Back in early 2010—when downtown Oceanside was still a just a rugged military town known more for its good surf and gritty exterior—Ty Whitehead’s grandmother could see our potential future of the downtown area. She convinced her son Scott (Ty’s dad) to get a space and open something up. Ty and his father always had enjoyed grilling burgers at home, and often tried new burger places together as a bonding experience. It was only natural that they’d eventually agree on opening up a burger joint.

They quickly settled on the name Burger House, but quickly found that another Burger House existed in another state, so to avoid a possible lawsuit, Scott added on his son’s name, and Ty’s Burger House was born. The menu started small, but boasted fresh quality ingredients with great fires and onion rings, accompanied with soft drink, local beers on tap, and a nice wine

selection to boot. They have an amazing back patio and indoor dining.

Soon after opening, Ty graduated from SDSU with a degree in business management, and he and his dad now run the business together— focusing on each other’s strengths. The menu has grown, too—they now offer burger options, such as lamb, grass-fed Buffalo, venison pulled pork, and an amazing Chicken Ciabatta sandwich.

Ty loves the Oceanside community and sees the new growth as an opportunity to really put Oceanside on the map. The community is very important to his family—he gives back to his family church with a monthly bible study breakfast. It’s stories like these that have been huge building blocks for the downtown area. It’s local people like the Whitehead family that saw the potential, put their roots down, and have made Oceanside the place we proudly we call home.

NORTH COUNTY ROASTERY Coffee is the commodity. But the exchange and intention is always “love.” Kevin Shin—the owner and brain behind the newly popular Switchboard Restaurant—has done it again. Also located within the Fin Hotel, the new North County Roastery is just another example of the excellence and meticulous attention to detail that Mr. Shin and company brings to the table. Humble in his demeanor, Kevin insisted over and over again that none of this could be done with out the support of his family, the western hospitality group, and, of course—his mom.

Back in 2019 after a trip to Seattle where all the talk is coffee, coffee, coffee, Kevin realized a new passion of his own was percolating up—coffee.

Not just the product itself—the whole process.

From importing, to roasting, to sampling and selling, Kevin found himself enamored by this savory little bean and all its magnificent diversity.

Upon returning home to San Diego, he purchased his own home roasting system and the love affair truly began to grow. In learning the varietals and the way different harvest yield crops, the allure of coffee deepened and birthed his dream to share this knowledge and joy with others.

Working with incredible distributors, the coffee here comes from small farms in Ethiopia, Kenya, Nicaragua, Colombia, Sumatra, and soon to be joining the force—a special varietal from Kona. In addition to a fresh brewed house blend, North Country Roastery offers a single origin pour over, as well as a single origin espresso. Got a thing for Nitro Cold brew? The kegs of this liquid gold are made here 100-percent in house. Using fresh roasted beans, they’re then ground up, seeped, and poured into a keg with a nitrogen tap. Craft coffee on draft. Pretty dang epic.

As North County Roastery settles in, the whole coffee experience, too, has begun to brew.

Currently, they’re selling bags of the house blend or a single origin beans and coffee workshops are the horizon. Always with the community in mind, Kevin is excited to offer North Country Roastery as a place where people can come together in their love or curiosity about this delicious drinkable plant. Coffee flights, roasting classes, education offerings, and everything in between are to be on the menu here soon!

From concept to creation, North County Roastery is all about the ascetics. Shin’s inspiration

comes from his hard working, small-businessowning immigrant mother. Initially, he wanted the design to be simple: A photo of him and her—an ode to where it all began. However, true to Kevin’s style—he took a small idea, and ran with it.

Now, the walls are tastefully adorned with sepia photos of historical inspirational figures and some of their most famous quotable words. The centerpiece is an incredible original masterpiece of Atlas, the Greek god, by local artist Margaret Chairo. “The positive reminder of inspiration is needed more than ever these days.” Shin said.

With the pick up of caffeine paired with the daily dose to positivit y, and focus in communit y connection, North Country Roastery is a wholesome addition to the ever-growing oasis of Oceanside.
