SET IN STONE A WORD FROM THE PUBLISHER

Wow, what an amazing summer we had here in Oceanside. Crazy heat waves, unbelievably warm ocean temps, first time skydiving, soccer tournaments, beach volleyball, surf camps, hiking, dining out, pool parties, and plenty of BBQs with close friends and family. But all good things must come to an end. Summer is over and now it’s time to buckle down and get back into our weekly routines— getting the kids off to school, making their lunches, dropping them off for sports, and other extra curricular activities. Not to mention, the simple THEOSIDER.COM

task of getting to work on time. The good news is that everything around town goes back to a normal pace—it’s much easier to park, there’re shorter wait times at our local restaurants, and the mindset of normalcy throughout the work week. We here at The Osider applaud you on your daily life and we’re here to help you get through it all without a hitch. That’s why we’re featuring 12 great coffee houses in this issue to keep you pumped up and moving in the right direction. We’re also featuring our annual “Haunted Oside” article on the Star Theatre to celebrate Halloween 6

as we slide into fall. It may be time to batten down the hatches, but there’s always time for a good old cup of Joe, some quality “me” time, and a good read. Enjoy and stay pumped,

Walnuts

This is a very traditional recipe from Lima, Peru. Many families in Lima love Cocaditas (coconut cookies) and always prepare them at home or some other variation. Cocaditas can also be found in many bakeries or cafes. My sisters and I used to make them on Fridays after school when we felt like having something sweet, but there was nothing to be found at my house. We always enjoyed making them, and of course, eating them.

INGREDIENTS

2 1/2 cups of shaved coconut (If it’s too dry, soak in water for twenty minutes. Then drain it and dry with paper towel) 2 cans evaporated milk 1 can condensed milk 1 cup sugar 1 cup chopped walnuts PREPARATION 1. Mix all ingredients in a pot on medium heat with a wooden spoon (it’s better to use a double capsulated bottom pot). 2. Continue stirring the pot without letting it sit and the mix will start to reduce. The mix will be ready once the bottom of the pot is visible and all the ingredients are completely mixed. 3. Let mix cool, then roll into bite-sized balls and coat with shaved coconut.

GREEN O

BACK TO SCHOOL & ZERO WASTE WORDS: GREEN OCEANSIDE In 2012, the Oceanside Unified School District (OUSD) became the first school district in the Nation to commit to the goal of Zero Waste. Through the adoption of the OUSD Zero Waste Resolution, OUSD partnered with the City of Oceanside to implement the Zero Waste Schools Initiative throughout all 23 schools in the District. At each school, the City’s Green Oceanside team conducts a semester-long implementation program that evaluates the waste of the entire school, and implements an education and infrastructure system that manages landfill, recycling, and organic material over time. Paper, plastic, and organic materials make up a significant amount of waste in California schools. The majority of this material comes from student lunches and backpacks. This year when it comes to getting ready for school, ditch the plastic water bottles, plastic sandwich bags, brown paper bags, and make your child’s school lunch delicious and sustainable. How can you learn from Oceanside’s Zero Waste Schools? THEOSIDER.COM

5 WAYS TO PACK A SUSTAINABLE LUNCH/BACKPACK Buy Locally Buy food that’s locally grown. You’re supporting your local community, while also reducing the carbon footprint your food carries by cutting down on the distance it has traveled to end up in your lunchbox. Skip Individually Wrapped Foods Processed foods that come conveniently prepackaged contribute heavily to landfills, ocean pollution, and air pollution. Reach for Reusable Sandwich Bags, Containers, and Utensils There’s no need for single-use plastic sandwich bags, containers, or utensils with so many amazing alternatives on the market. Instead, consider fabric sandwich bags, bento boxes, and reusable utensils. Pack a Reusable Water Bottle Individual drink boxes and bottled water are wasteful, in terms of packaging and money. Instead opt for a reusable bottle. Reusable beverage containers are a must for a healthy lunchbox or backpack. Purchase a Reusable Lunchbox A good reusable lunchbox will last for years. When your student needs a new, cooler themed lunchbox, don’t forget to donate the old one. Oceanside’s

EILEEN TURK WORDS: ELIZABETH SCHWARTZE PHOTO: PRISCILLA IEZZI

For twelve years, the City of Oceanside and its residents have benefitted from the cheerful personality of Eileen Turk. Eileen recently retired as the Parks & Recreation Division Manager, but during her tenure, she took her directive very seriously to deliver the pledge that “Parks Make Life Better!” Her list of accomplishments include opening three world-class skate parks, the twenty-seven acre Mance Buchanon Park, the El Corazon Senior Center, and measures in expanding the San Luis Rey River Bike Trail—just to name a few. Thanks to her tireless devotion to Oceanside, our parks, pools, recreation centers, and programs have increased the quality of life for both residents and visitors. Born in New Jersey and raised in New York, Eileen’s father was a Recreation Director, and at the age of fourteen, she started her recreation career by volunteering at the Parks & Recreation Department in her hometown of Pleasantville, New York. She attended Springfield College in Massachusetts and received a degree in Recreation and Leisure Service. In 1989, she set her sights on San Diego and drove across the country in her CJ 7 Jeep. She landed her first

career in her new home with City of San Diego Parks & Recreation. In 2006, she accepted a job with City of Oceanside as Recreation Supervisor. Eileen recently left her career with the city as the “Queen of Ribbon Cutting Ceremonies” in part to

“She took her directive very seriously to deliver the pledge that “Parks Make Life Better!” spend more time with her husband, Steve, but will continue her service as a volunteer and advocate. Eileen is very proud of her role in founding the non-profit Friends of Oceanside Parks in 2010, which has raised over $50,000. She’s also proud of forging successful collaborations with Main Street Oceanside, Visit Oceanside, and the Chamber of Commerce. She loves creating memories for residents and visitors with events like “Oceanside Valentine’s Week” that brought a ferris wheel to the pier. She helped bring Pro Kids

Golf to Oceanside, and procured resources to maintain Heritage Park (which she regards as a gem in Oceanside). In retrospect, her overall career highlight was planning and celebrating the year-long City of Oceanside’s 125th Anniversary in 2013, where a casual invite to the White House almost resulted with a visit from the President of the United States! For the future of Oceanside, there are two feats she would love to see completed. First, the completion of the swim center at El Corazon. It’s been approved, but lacks the necessary funding. Second, adding more pickleball courts. With a rise in popularity, the pickleball players are outgrowing their courts at Melba Bishop Recreation Center. Both initiatives are great for overall revenue and enhancing Oceanside. Starting in October, Eileen Turk supporters can see her radiant smile on KOCT Television. Eileen recently learned she will be co-hosting, and then taking over Elaine Swann’s role on the show, Spectrum. “The City of Oceanside has been great. My only hope is that I made a difference,” smiled Eileen. This dedication is why she’s Oceanside’s Finest!

MISSION ASIAN MARKET WORDS: NINO “NEENS” CAMILO  PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER

We can be “broken” while still “functional.” You can still “surf” your board if it has a ding in it. But at some point, before everything just falls apart—we need a fix. The fix I speak of is not a job for Home Depot or the local ding repair guy. This fix, in particular, is a Filipino Fix. For me, a Filipino American living in North County SD, Mission Asian Market/Pinoy Express is a true hidden gem. It’s one of those places I go to when I need to be made whole again. Yep, that’s right. A Filipino joint in Oceanside—a place far away from towns like Mira Mesa (shout out MMHS Class Of ’96) or National City (shout out G-ma and G-pa) who are known for their Filipino communities. Maybe you’re Pinoy, or you have Filipino friends who fed you—and fed you good. Then THEOSIDER.COM

you understand the emptiness you experience when you haven’t had Lumpia, Pancit, or Adobo in a long time. But the repair can be easy, and it starts right when you walk in. It’s as if someone put a Filipino essential oil in a diffuser—just the smell alone starts the healing right when you open the door. What's that you smell? Lumpia? Yes. Pancit? Yes. Sisig, Fried Milkfish, Adobo, Lechon, Kare Kare, and Pinakbet? Yes, yes, and more yes! All of these dishes are made fresh daily and ready for you when you walk in. This is not a food review, but if you’re wondering if the food is good, just ask the constant flow of people (all walks of life) who are there for the solid three-and-a-half hour lunch rush. I asked the people sitting at the table next to me if they were regulars. “No, we’re just visiting 22

from the Bay Area and took our kids to Legoland. We wanted some home-style food, so Yelp led us to this place,” they replied. “This is our second time coming here in two days.” Hot food is provided in the restaurant area, but there’s also a “market” area. I wanted to give you a good report, so I studied the shelves to see if this would be a place my grandma would shop. Her list would have looked like this: Philippine Brand Dried Mango, Shrimp Chips, Pan de Sal, Chicharon, Sky Flakes, Banana Ketchup, Calamansi, and a Halo “to-go.” Check, check, and check. Consider this Filipino “fixed.”

LAGREE FIT WORDS: ALYSON KLIER PHOTOS: RUSSEL SPENCER

Lagree Fit opened its doors in April of this year, but their inviting space on Oceanside Boulevard (close to Coast Highway) is already building a community of likeminded health enthusiasts who want to achieve their best through fitness. Owners Scott and Desiree McBride have created a boutique fitness studio that’s fun and welcoming to people of all ages and abilities. Their enthusiasm for and expertise of the Lagree Fit method bring a feeling of accessibility to this form of exercise that might appear intimidating or daunting to some at first glance. The success and enjoyment that Scott and Desiree have found personally through the Lagree Fit method motivated them to open their own studio in Oceanside, and they’re very proud THEOSIDER.COM

to be able to contribute to the well being of the city they grew up in and call “home.” There’s nothing like Lagree Fit in or around Oceanside, something I experienced firsthand when I took my very own intro class, which is offered for free to new clients. I consider myself a bit of an exercise enthusiast, but even I have to admit that the M3 MegaReformer, developed by Sebastian Lagree for the Lagree Fit workout, looks like a medieval torture device. Luckily, Lagree Fit Oceanside has an amazing website with videos and information about the machine and what to expect on your first visit. The low-impact workout is customizable for all levels—from beginners to professional athletes, because the M3 MegaReformer has adjustable cables that you can use to make the workout more or less difficult. The full-body workout is 40 minutes, and once the instructor puts on the music, you move quickly from one exercise to the next, so it goes by in a flash! It was a blast, and with just ten machines in the studio, the experience was a lot more personal and fun than going to the gym. Scott and Desiree feel that the city of Oceanside encourages small businesses such as theirs by creating an atmosphere of community. They see well-planned development and outreach going on as neighborhoods and business districts are revitalized and they’re excited to be a part of it. Lagree Fit’s inviting 24

studio has room to add more machines and classes as their fitness community grows as well. Make sure you take advantage of their first class offer and see what the buzz is all about!

From a distance, South Morro Hills is said to look like the head of a sleeping Indian lying on his back. A volcanic cinder cone marks the 3,500acre farming area, and about 178 homes dot the hillsides. Residents include eleven longtime farming families, namely the Nagatas, Stokes, Mellanos, and Gilligans. Louise and Larry Balma are relatively new farmers to the area. They bought a hilltop residence and 2.5 acre avocado grove 24 years ago. Later, they purchased fifteen adjacent acres and another eleven-acre parcel to expand their groves. “Our focus is on maintaining our groves and taking care of our trees and land,” said Louise. Larry Balma serves as the president of the South Morro Hills Association. The group was formed in 1977 by eighteen property owners to preserve the rural nature of South Morro Hills. Over the decades, membership has grown to over 100, and the group’s goals have expanded to ensuring area prosperity. Business challenges farmers face are increased water costs, a rise in labor rates, demands of environmental restrictions and food and safety regulations, and the competition of imported produce. To alleviate farmers’ struggles, a group of farmers, residents, Visit Oceanside tourism experts, and city employees have worked to develop “Agritourism” opportunities for farmers. A series of workshops gathered community input, and a five-year AgriVision plan was drafted for Oceanside City Council to review in August.

As an additional step forward eleven Mercado farmers markets have been held in South Morro Hills, which have been well received. “We estimated around 300-plus guests attended (the July Mercado) throughout the day,” Louise said. “It was crazy fun. Everyone who came asked why don’t we do this every month.” Over the same time, Integral Communities proposed building 700 houses on 171 acres of prime South Morro Hills farmland. Many are concerned with the increased housing density and the project’s lack of agriculture preservation.

In response to the pending North River Farms project, a group of farmers and residents have put the “Save Our Agricultural Recourses” initiative on the November ballot. If passed by voters, it’d call for a city vote on all building or land use changes to farmland for the next twenty years. The Balmas are among those who do not think the SOAR initiative is the best solution. Among the reasons they oppose it is it’d require farmers to undertake a costly campaign to gain votes to make changes to their property. “We continue to march forward with   27

Oceanside AgriVision,” said Louise. “South Morro Hills will never stay the same going forward, but we can create a very special area in Oceanside that’d be the first of its kind in the nation where agriculture, agritourism, and agrivilliages can come together.” For now, it’s uncertain if the housing development will go forward as planned, if the SOAR initiative will pass, and how the AgriVision plan will be implemented. What is certain, though, is a shared love of South Morro Hills farmland—and that’s the most important part. THEOSIDER.COM

THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW

THAT SHAPED OCEANSIDE’S HISTORY WORDS: KRISTI HAWTHORNE PHOTOS COURTESY OF OCEANSIDE HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Every city has major moments that shape its history. Oceanside has had significant events, development, and turning points that make it the city it is today. Here are just ten of those moments that impacted Oceanside.

Old Highway 101 brought countless travelers to Oceanside. Looking North at the corner of Hill St. and 2nd Avenue in 1924. It's now known as the corner of Coast Hwy and Mission Avenue.

Mission San Luis Rey, 1890

The great flood of 1916.

Andrew Jackson Myers, founder of Oceanside.

1.

Mission San Luis Rey Long before Oceanside existed, Padre Fermín Lasuén founded the Mission San Luis Rey on June 13, 1798. With the establishment of this Franciscan Mission, the lives of the Native Americans who lived in what we now call the San Luis Rey Valley were irrevocably changed. Just a few short decades later, white settlers and pioneers arrived to claim homesteads and farm in the rich fertile soil along the riverbed. A township named San Luis Rey formed, which included a hotel, general store, stage stop, and even a newspaper. Soon the inhabitants of this township, along with its small group of businesses, would all move four miles westward to the new town of Oceanside that had just been surveyed. They became among some of its first residents. By that time, the Mission San Luis Rey was left in ruins, but was considered a tourist attraction even then. Restoration began in 1892, and is Oceanside’s only National Landmark.

2.

The land patent to Andrew Jackson Myers In September of 1882, A. J. Myers moved from the San Luis Rey Valley to what would be the original town site of Oceanside. He applied

for and received a land patent from the US government that was issued on June 20, 1883. The land was surveyed on October 13, 1883, and Myers went to work promoting the new town of Oceanside to residents and investors from Colton, Temecula, and beyond. It was common for people living in the inland valleys to escape the summer heat by going to the “ocean side” and Myers likely chose the name “Oceanside” simply because of the obvious.

3.

Railroad The railroad was an important featuring linking large cities to smaller ones and providing a much-needed way to transport people, goods, mail and crops. The California Southern Railroad was first built from National City to Colton in 1881and 1882. The railroad was especially vital to the farmers and ranchers of the San Luis Rey Valley and Rancho Santa Margarita who sent their crops to Los Angeles and other points. The line paralleled the coast to what would soon be the new town of Oceanside and at the Santa Margarita River went northeast to Fallbrook and De Luz, then through Temecula Canyon. Oceanside’s first ‘depot’ was a simple wooden platform in 1884 but just four years later a new 34

Santa Fe depot was built near Cleveland Street at would be the center of all activity in downtown Oceanside. The train brought tourists, business and new residents to Oceanside in those early years, much as it does today.

4.

Incorporation of Oceanside In March of 1888, the South Oceanside Diamond newspaper reported that prominent businessmen of Oceanside were interested in incorporation. “We have sounded the public pulse and believe the time has come to incorporate the “Gateway of the county.” On June 25, 1888 residents cast their votes with Founder Andrew Jackson Myers being the first to vote. The Diamond reported that the “total vote polled was 128, and the vote counted 127—a torn ballot being rejected.” 74 voted for incorporation and 53 against. On July 3, 1888 the San Diego County Supervisors declared the City of Oceanside in existence.

5.

The Oceanside Pier Even before Oceanside was incorporated, plans for a pier (or commercial wharf) was under way. Little did those early speculators know that the pier would become a lasting symbol of

9. killed, including three residents of the San Luis Rey Valley. Countywide bridges and roads were impassible, and small towns were isolated. As the “Gateway of the County,” Oceanside served as an important hub for commerce. Without the railroad and roads, the Oceanside Pier was used to bring in much needed food and supplies to our city and surrounding communities until the railroad and auto bridges over the San Luis Rey River could be rebuilt. Oceanside. The first pier was located at the foot of Couts Street, now known as Wisconsin Street. A storm destroyed all but 300 feet of this pier in December 1890. The second pier, affectionately called the “the little iron wharf” was built in 1894—at its present day location. The third pier was built in 1908 and was called the “steel pier.” Oceanside’s fourth pier was built in 1927, and the concrete portion of the approach, ramp, and stairway still stands today. The fifth pier opened in 1947 and was the longest pier on the west coast. Our present day pier opened in 1987 and is one foot longer than the previous one, and it’s now the longest wooden pier on the west coast. The pier continues to be a favorite landmark, and one of the most photographed features of our beautiful city.

6.

Flood of 1916 In 1916, a devastating storm flooded San Diego County. Over ten inches of rain fell during the month of January, and the deluge overflowed a swollen San Luis Rey river that was filled with debris. Pine trees from Palomar Mountain were brought down in the raging floodwaters and deposited on the beach, along with livestock from ranches in the valley. Railroad tracks and roads were destroyed. Twenty-two people were

7.

Highway 101 Oceanside’s Hill Street became part of the State Highway 101 in 1918. The Highway Commission agreed to pay for two-thirds of the cost of paving Hill Street in 1917. Local voters, excited about the prospect of improved roads and additional commerce, approved a bond election to pay for the remainder and the new highway route was completed in July 1918. For years, it was the main route from Los Angeles to San Diego and it brought countless travelers through Oceanside. This important route connected Oceanside with other coastal communities in San Diego County and was considered “California’s Mother Road.”

8.

Camp Pendleton In 1940, Oceanside’s population was only 4,651, but that would soon change with world events and the advent of a combat training base at Rancho Santa Margarita Rancho. As World War II intensified, the historic rancho was taken over by the Department of the Navy to be used as a training base for the Marine Corps. Around 20,000 marines and civilian support flooded the base and dramatically changed Oceanside forever. Oceanside was hard pressed to meet the need for housing and other essentials the military and civilian personnel demanded.   35

The Harbor For decades, the City of Oceanside sought to have a recreational harbor. However, Camp Pendleton was opposed to all harbor proposals because land and access was needed from the military base. That changed in 1958 as General Ridgley stated he would not object to an Oceanside Harbor constructed on Camp Pendleton property. City officials met with Camp Pendleton officials in March of 1959 regarding a lease of 68 acres upon which the harbor would be partially located, and eventually, the transfer of the needed acreage to the City was complete. On February 6, 1961, a groundbreaking ceremony was held for the Oceanside Boat Harbor, and was touted as the “most historic event in the history of Oceanside.” The Oceanside Harbor was dedicated and formally opened in June of 1963, fulfilling a long-awaited dream of many residents.

10.

Oceanside Redevelopment With the advent of the shopping mall, many cities across America saw merchants exit their downtown, leaving vacant storefronts, and Oceanside was no exception. Downtown Oceanside languished as residents and shoppers and needed tax dollars went elsewhere. In 1975, the Oceanside Redevelopment Agency was formed, and a redevelopment plan was put in place that was touted as the “greatest thing in the world that’ll ever happen to Oceanside.” However, it’d take more than a decade to see the transformation of downtown, reconstruction of the pier, new condo projects, and the long-awaited Civic Center Plaza and Library were just the beginning. With a new hotel project, movie theater, and many of Oceanside’s old buildings renovated and repurposed, downtown is truly experiencing a renaissance with new hope and anticipation for what’s yet to come. People are rediscovering the city by the “ocean side.”

Home grown DEZZY HOLLOW WORDS: JAMEY STONE PHOTO: ZACH CORDNER

Oceanside has always been known as a beach town for the most part, but once you go east of the 5 into the Valley—a whole other world exists. Part of that other world sits a small neighborhood known as Fireside. This is a blue-collar area that has plenty of distractions for any young person growing up there. For some, the gangs become their life. For others, searching for their own identity can be a daunting-yet-rewarding task. Take Dezzy Hollow, for example. Dezzy is an up-and-coming rapper/singer that’s put not only the Fireside neighborhood on his back, but also all of Oceanside. At just 25 years of age, Dezzy has taken the pressure of the street life he has grown up around and used it to mold him into an amazing artist. When I asked him how he keeps it so positive musically and in life, he said that he gives credit to his father Mister V, who led by example when he was young and growing up at Fireside Park. His father was always the one helping out the all the kids in the hood. Whether it was sports equipment, food on the table, or just some THEOSIDER.COM

sound advice—Mister V instilled the positive message to Dezzy from day one. After graduating from Oceanside High in 2011, he linked up with Daniel Ximenez from Mad Strange. Along with his Producer J Rolz, they’ve made over twenty music videos that are available for your viewing pleasure on his YouTube page. The thing I love most about his music is the blend of 80s and 90s R&B with smoothed out gangster lyrics that carry a positive spin. It’s very important that his music is youth driven, and the underlying message states that you can do big things no matter what environment you grew up in. Dezzy loves Oceanside and it’s cultural diversity. He loves calling Oside his home. We salute you, Dezzy—keep up the good work. Dezzy Hollow’s new release Fireside drops Sept 13th. I highly recommend giving him a listen. If you love Oside they way we do, this will be just what you’re looking for. Instagram: @dezzyhollow

ARTS

OCEANSIDE INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL WORDS: RACHEL MICHELLE FERNANDES  PHOTOS: DANIELLE JACKSON

Oceanside is known for its incredible beaches, long-thriving surf community, and working-class military families, but when it comes to cinema and the entertainment industry—most folks might think they’d need to travel to LA for all of that noise. Enter the Oceanside International Film Festival (OIFF), a small but mighty cultural affair that takes place every August (almost) since 2009 and has grown steadily over the years— thanks to the city’s cultural growth, and also the efforts of one of Oceanside’s most active power couples, Carly Starr Brullo Niles and Lou Niles (of Love Machine Films and 91X Loudspeaker). This year’s eighth incarnation of the festival offered a little something for everybody, from TV junkies to environmentalists, as well as to music, art, and classic cinema fans. Kicking off with a celebrity-studded red carpet premiere of a brand new episode of the locally set hit TV show Animal Kingdom, the festival (August 1st - 5th) also included a roster of

Animal Kingdom's Q&A session with (L to R): Ben Robson, Daniele Nathanson, Kevin Ryder, Carolina Guerra, and Shawn Hatosy.

independent film screenings of both documentaries and narratives from all over the world, a panel discussion on the role of women in the entertainment industry, a special screening of the locally made environmental documentary Shadow of Drought: California’s Looming Water Crisis, and two live orchestral scorings to film classics Night of the Living Dead and Mad Max by the world

famous, NY-based Morricone Youth. “Seeing our lineup grow every year in not just quantity but quality is fantastic,” said the festival’s Director of Programming Sterling Anno. “I have to give credit to Lou and Carly Niles for being able to truly make this one of the best years that we’ve ever had on record of not just attendance, but of just general enthusiasm.”   47

As the cultural economy shifts, Oceanside is becoming more and more known for its diverse group of creative people. The growth of the film festival is another indication that a thriving arts community is very much present alongside all the sun and surf. Housed by the historic Brooks Theater in downtown Oceanside and hosted by the Oceanside Cultural Arts Foundation, OIFF also partnered with the Oceanside Art Walk on Friday, August 3rd for a night of documentaries about local and regional artists. “One of the big selling points for a lot of people who attended this year was the actual city and the variety of what’s around, homegrown community wise,” added Anno, who in addition to his role with OIFF also serves as an outreach coordinator for the Horrible Imaginings Horror Film Festival. “The community works so well together with so many different mediums, but also events in general.” For those who may have missed out on this year’s festivities or are interested in returning, check out the festival’s website osidefilm.org in October for more ways to get involved, including submitting films, volunteering, or hosting an event. Mark your calendars and don't miss next year's festival August 7-11th 2019. THEOSIDER.COM

HAUNTED OCEANSIDE:

THE STAR WORDS: ALONDRA FIGUEROA  PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER

The fabulous Star Theatre with its retro appeal and glorious sign with bright, flashing neon stars beckons for one to come in for a show. It has such a cool vibe and legendary gritty history that we were absolutely thrilled to conduct a paranormal investigation for our annual Haunted Oceanside article. The Star is more than just nostalgic and kitschy—it truly is Oceanside.

THEATRE

Circa 1956

In 1956, when the Star Theatre debuted, it possessed the most modern design of its era. Folks, let me tell you that this place was seriously swanky! Drawing hundreds of spectators to revel in its “Stereophonic sound” system built into the ceiling that for the first time allowed the moviegoer to be surrounded by sound. While this may seem old hat to us nowadays—at the time, this was incredible and the futuristic allure was only matched by its luxury. The theatre provided Loge seating—think private box style—and featured a “cry room” for mothers with babies, and it even provided bottle warmers! Parents could whisk away their crying child to the soundproof cry room where they could attend to them and still enjoy the feature— so smart! Where is this luxury now? I’m calling for the return of this genius idea! It was thoughtful touches like this that made the Star Theatre the coolest place to be in the entire county. Let’s not forget that with the advent of cineplexes, theatres like The Star fell upon hard times, as they struggled to maintain an audience. Some of the “ride or die” locals will remember that in the 80s, the Star was purchased and actually became a Pussycat Theatre featuring X-rated films. My, we have come a long way, baby! Since then, it’s been bought and sold and restored—most recently in 2001 by the Poinsettia Center for the Arts, where it was reopened as a performing arts center and has thrived ever THEOSIDER.COM

"IT WAS PALPABLE. THE SWIRLING MIX OF BOTH OLD AND NEW ENERGIES CREATED A VIBRATION THAT ONE CANNOT DENY"

During our investigation, the theatre was completely dark except for the infrared lights on our cameras. We used a specially modified DSLR camera that sees the full spectrum of light—that's why the images from our investigation are purple.

since! Managing Artistic Director David Schulz has transformed the Star—removing seats, creating a grander stage, and updating the lighting system are just a few of the major changes that have helped it become the hub for local productions. When David shared some of the ghostly experiences he’s had at the theatre, we knew we had to jump in! Schulz often works nights in the theatre and has had many unexplainable experiences, and on more than one occasion, he’s seen a fullbodied apparition walking from the projection

room (located at the top of the seating area) to the “cry room” where the spotlight is now housed. Adding to the spook factor is the fact that he isn’t the only one who’s seen this! I also spoke with technical director Adam Keck, who shared that he and a co-worker were building a set during the day and the colleague suddenly pointed up to the top of the theatre and said, “What is that?” Adam turned to look and saw a human-like figure moving from the projection room into the spotlight booth. “My gut feeling is that it was a woman, but I couldn’t see any   51

defining features,” Adam stated. Another area of unexplainable activity in the theatre is the left side of the stage also known as “Stage Right.” This is where David—on many occasions—has had his name whispered in his ear. Other Star employees have also noted Stage Right as very active, including stage manager Alexa Small, who handles all of the production and is often located there. She also shared that she loves the theatre, has worked there many years, and doesn’t consider it a place to fear— but she often experiences strange occurrences. THEOSIDER.COM

EVP session with Pascal van der Berk in the projection room.

David Schulz investigates the attic, while a mysterious blue orb kept appearing in every photo taken of this area.

One Sunday morning, Alexa arrived at the Star, and as she walked into the theatre, she immediately felt like someone was there. “I heard clear footsteps as if someone was running away from me! It felt like I was intruding into someone else’s space,” Alexa continued, “I don’t get that feeling all the time, but when I do, I might run a little faster to the lights.” Another frightening incident that stands out in her mind was when she was in the green room that has monitors focused on the stage. Alexa knew she was completely alone in the theatre, but suddenly she saw a man wearing loose fitting pants, a long denim jacket with a brown button down shirt, and newsboy cap walk across the stage as if he was an employee securing the area. Naturally, she was scared, but gathered the courage to search the entire theatre with her cellphone at hand and 911 dialed ready to go if an intruder had come in off the street, but to her dismay—there was absolutely no one there! THEOSIDER.COM

Alexa has also experienced electronic or technical issues with the soundboard that controls all the sound for a production, so talk about a panic-inducing moment! It has frozen while she was working on a show and absolutely nothing would work. This has happened four times, but only to Alexa. She stated that even when she had unplugged everything in order to reset it, it wouldn’t work: “I unplugged it and the lights stayed on. Nothing happened and it should have turned off, but it didn’t.” That’s why Alexa is the stage manager—she knows how to deal with those stress-filled moments, because as they say, “The show must go on.” David, Alexa, and Adam have also all heard loud noises and footsteps coming from the attic that extends over the entire theatre. Alexa shared that she’s felt someone walking behind her in the attic: “I heard it and felt it.” She’s also had scares in the prop loft, located high behind the stage: “I’ve been on one end of it, and something will 52

loudly fall on the opposite end at least 30 feet away from me—and it’s things that are securely in place.” More recently, in early July, Adam and Alexa were working during the day when they heard a frighteningly loud crash, as if ladders and equipment had suddenly fallen. They checked everywhere and there was no evidence of anything falling—both were left bewildered. Electronic issues appear to be a theme for the Star Theatre, as the day we setup our, infrared surveillance cameras for our investigation seemed to start off with strange shenanigans. After the six cameras were securely setup, Camera Two suddenly tilted to the left on its own, which should not have happened. When we returned late that night to begin our investigation, the camera system appeared to be working fine, but right after we turned out the lights for our walk through—the whole video system shut down. It would then restart and shut down—this continued to happen over the span of 45 minutes, delaying

our investigation. We were only able to get four cameras to function properly. Our team of investigators included Zach Cordner, Pascal van den Berk, and production assistants Ezekiel Hensley and Renordo Bowen, both recent graduates of El Camino and Oceanside High. Haunted Oside's usual writer Amber Lussier had taken ill, so I was summoned to help with the investigation due to my special abilities with the paranormal. Full disclosure, I’m what some people would consider a “sensitive”—someone who has the ability to feel different energies/ spirits that others cannot and can often communicate with them. During our original walk through of the theatre, it was obvious that there was a tremendous amount of energy seeping from the walls. It was palpable. The swirling mix of both old and new energies created a vibration that one cannot deny. I must say that after the electrical issues, I felt a significant difference in the energy at the Star. It was as if we were being watched, but from afar. It was as if the spirits were just hanging out in the wings, but not wanting to interact. That being said, we were able to capture several EVPs (Electronic Voice Phenomenon)—a disembodied voice that’s caught on a recorder that’s often not heard at the time, but when played back, can be heard in the audio. The first EVPs we got were from Stage

Right. Ezekiel and I were standing in between the curtains when he looked to the left and saw a disembodied hand about to touch his left hand. He reacted verbally, but remained calm, sharing with me that he had just seen a hand, and when he turned—it vanished. We were both surprised, but pressed on—not knowing that we had recorded a strange gurgle at the exact same time that Ezekiel saw the mysterious hand near his. This gurgle appeared again when Ezekiel and David were alone in the middle of the stage. David heard it and asked if it was a stomach growl, but it was not. Neither of them had any growling going on. Pascal captured another EVP in the projection booth. He asked, “Is anyone or anything preventing you from talking to us?” Several seconds of silence passed and then a faint “No” was heard by Pascal, as well as on the audio. On another night, Zach and David investigated the attic alone and caught several more extremely creepy EVPs. The amazing thing about EVPs is that you think you’re getting nothing, because you often don’t hear it in person, but if you’re lucky like David—they like you more than you think! In response to his question of, “Who’s going to be the first one to say their name?” about twenty seconds later there was an audible female voice making unintelligible sounds. Also, while Zach was rapidly taking photos with his full spectrum camera, David captured a clear male voice responding to his question of, “ When was your story?” and then we heard a whispered, “What?” followed by a heavy breath. As Zach and David were leaving the attic, they noticed a pillow, blanket, pair of work pants,   53

and work shirt, as well as an unplugged light— none of which David recognized as being property of the theatre. At that point, he asked, “Who’s been using this pillow?” and was immediately answered by an inaudible whisper. The guys decided to go to the roof to see if anything was hiding out there, and surprisingly— it was! They used a K-2 meter that investigators use to detect electromagnetic frequencies, and were able to communicate by asking the spirits to change the light of the meter from green all the way to red. The best part was that when asked to do so, the “spirits” maintained the meter “on” for several seconds. This is very interesting because during our investigation, I kept feeling like there was activity happening above the seats in the auditorium, but as I was unaware of the attic at the time I thought to myself, “Why are they all hovering near or on the roof?” I made this comment to Zach, and that’s why they checked out the roof and got some great evidence! That goes to show that you never know how fantastic an investigation is going to turn out. As the Star Theatre truly is a local gem, we need to continue to support the performing arts. We encourage our readers to attend plays and donate directly, so that the Star Theatre can continue to shine brightly.

LOCAL BUSINESS

THE FIN HOTEL WORDS: ALICIA STONE PHOTOS: RENORDO BOWEN

Location! Location! Location! You can’t argue the fact that our downtown area has become a hot spot for tourists and locals alike. With an endless array of new restaurants and shops continuing to open, it’s hard even for us residents to experience them all. When everyday life gets in the way, wouldn’t it be nice to experience all the fun from a visitor’s point of view? Or have you ever had too much family in town and not enough space? You may want to schedule a little “stay-cation” at The Fin Hotel, a newly remodeled historic building located in the heart of downtown. The Fin Hotel originally opened in 1927 as THEOSIDER.COM

The Keisker Hotel. It was the first hotel in Oceanside with hot running water. Most recently, it was operating as the Dolphin Hotel and the old Yelp! Reviews reflect a bit of a run-down establishment that closed its doors to business a few years ago after a fire damaged much of the second floor. The Western Hospitality Group then purchased the property and completely renovated the inside. The rooms and suites have a clean, streamlined décor, and include modern amenities, such as complimentary Wi-Fi, Bluetooth speakers, and Kuerig coffee makers. The owners paid homage to history by retaining 54

the bones of the original staircase and meticulously restoring the antique tile in the lobby. Within walking distance of the hotel, there’s no shortage of food and drink options, as well as the Pier, the Oceanside Museum of Art, the California Surf Museum, and the Transit Center. Matthew Higgins, a resident of Oceanside, is the General Manager of The Fin. “After living in Santa Barbara and San Diego, I settled down in Oceanside in 2003. I’ve been in the hospitality business for over 20 years and I was very excited to work in my own community and be a part of the project to bring The Fin Hotel back to life. Business has been great! Summer has us going strong, and we’re excited for the future,” said Matthew. “In my opinion, Oceanside is the coolest beach town with the best beaches in all of San Diego. O’siders are very proud of their community and I have enjoyed connecting with the surrounding businesses!” So, if you ever want to leave the housework behind for a night and get out with the family to enjoy our city and all it has to offer, check into The Fin Hotel for a change of pace. Matthew added, “Come by and take a look anytime. All of The Fin Team live here in Oceanside, and locals are always VIPs here!”

Owner and operator Delia De Cock

The end of summer is here—kids are going back to school and parking starts to get a little bit easier. It’s also a great time to support our local businesses and take a look at some that you may not know about. With Halloween right around the corner, I had the pleasure of going to Stage & Screen FX. What I found was much greater than my already high expectations. I walked into their store and immediately noticed the abundance of inventory and the high quality of the products on display, and then was THEOSIDER.COM

greeted with a great big smile from owner/operator Delia De Cock. She gave us a tour and had a wealth of information and enthusiasm about her business and all of the makeup and materials in it. Delia started in 2012 in Lansdale, Pennsylvania and over the next five years, she saw her online business explode and was having workshops and classes. In spring of 2017, she decided to expand to the West Coast, as she has family in Oceanside. Delia has lived here for a short time early in her life and has often visited. Stage & Screen FX isn’t just about high quality makeup— they also have clay, resin, foam, and basically anything for molding and casting. Stage & Screen FX is heaven for any artist, seeing how a lot of these products and brands are usually only found in Hollywood. Whether it’s alcohol-activated make up, modeling clay, or face and body paint—Stage & Screen FX has you covered. They also have discounts for 56

professional makeup artists, students, and teachers. And this business isn’t just for holidays—it truly is for anyone who’s serious about makeup and art and looking for the highest quality makeup for stage and theater. Whether you’re a beginner or a professional, Delia is a wealth of information and is very easy to talk to. Although they don’t do makeup in the store, they will, however, guide you in the right direction and make sure you have the best quality products. There’s definitely a little something for everyone (they can order anything you need), so come say hello to Delia and check out one of the best new stores in Oceanside!

Aburasso Ramen

(L-R) Chef Andrew Grendell, Owner Takeuchi Tadamichi, and Chef Masuko Aki.

Japan’s number-one Ramen restaurant opened in downtown Oceanside this summer. Ramen lovers—this is not a drill—this is Basso Drillman Ramen MENMA Oceanside. It’s authentic and delicious! Hailing from a city where ramen is a staple meal, Basso Drillman has not only thrived in Tokyo, but it’s award-winning Chef Ryuichiro Shinagawa has won the Michelin Bib Gourmand Award for four consecutive years. This ultimate Japanese ramen recipe has crossed the Pacific Ocean and Oceanside will be a mecca for all connoisseurs of authentic Japanese ramen! On a trip from Tokyo, co-owner Takeuchi Tadamichi reported that they chose Oceanside as their flagship restaurant outside of Japan because the location is the perfect place to THEOSIDER.COM

“spread the community of peace with ramen.” Local “ramen fanatic” and Basso Drillman ramen chef, Andrew Grendell, lived and studied in Tokyo for three years. The opening of his favorite ramen restaurant in his home city has him pumped to serve authentic ramen. Translated, the name Basso Drillman Ramen MENMA Oceanside means “someone who trains in the art of ramen noodle making in Oceanside.” The name may be long, but the menu is straightforward— spotlighting their award-winning ramen. The Basso Drillman menu is broken down into three different types of ramen. They use a recipe created exclusively for the Oceanside restaurant’s soup stock—Toripaitan—where the deep flavors of chicken, pork, and fish come from simmering for a long period of time. The soup stock is made fresh each day, and the noodles are exclusively sourced. Shoyu ramen is served with a thin, wavy ramen noodle and is made from a soup stock simmered over five hours, then Basso Drillman’s secret ingredients are added to a soy sauce base. Added toppings such as chashu pork (slowly simmered to perfection for six hours), green onions, red onions, fried onions, menma, and black peppers provide a rich, perfectly-seasoned ramen that summons the contents of the bowl to be slurped up in traditional Japanese fashion. The Red Hot Miso Ramen uses medium to 58

thick noodles to support the robust flavor of miso in the soup stock. Different spices (including hot peppers) produce a spicy and mild flavor that flawlessly complement the miso soup. Traditional toppings include Ajitama (seasoned soft-boiled egg), Menma (bamboo shoots), and chashu pork. Aburasso is Basso Drillman’s most acclaimed ramen. Aburasso is a soupless ramen featuring thick noodles so perfectly seasoned and full of flavor, there’s no room for soup in the bowl. The sauce for Aburasso is Basso Drillman’s own secret recipe. Aburasso is traditionally topped with fresh vegetables, making it an ideal dish for vegetarians. Not to be missed, the Karaage is a Japanese fried chicken that pairs nicely with a bowl of ramen. Complete the meal with Japanese beverages, such as Sapporo and Kawaba beers. Basso Drillman carries multiple sakes (the customary alcoholic beverage made from fermented rice), including Sawasaw—a sparkling sake. If you’re in the mood for some tasty traditional-style ramen in a relaxed setting, then this is the place for you!

ST. TROPEZ BISTRO & BEYOND WORDS: KATIE LALICATA PHOTOS: DANIELLE JACKSON If you’re anything like me, you miss Hill Street Cafe. With that being said, St. Tropez has come to save the day! Over the past twenty years, St. Tropez has served up French pastries and European-inspired cuisine to our neighbors down south in Encinitas and Carlsbad. A few months ago they joined us here in Oceanside. What a treat! If you haven’t yet stopped by, maybe it’s time you gave them a proper welcome! Owner Marcus Belke bought the company last year and is beyond stoked to find a home here in Oceanside. All the things we love about this town; well, he loves too! “It has charm that other cities have lost, and we hope it keeps it!” As for the location, this house was perfect. “It has all the spirit and the ambiance to get the ‘St. Tropez’ look and feel. We fell in love with the building,” said Marcus. Knowing the historical importance of the “big yellow house,” they made very little physical changes, preserving the building’s integrity. What they did change, however, is great! The inside feels like a chic modern bakery, but with casual cafe vibes. The biggest improvement to the building is the beautiful outdoor patio that mixes the Mediterranean/European feel of St. Tropez with our outdoor California lifestyle. Offering bistro style service, guests walk in and are greeted by smiles and a delicious display of beautiful, handmade French pastries. After you order, you then get diner’s choice for your table selection. In addition to having tons of seating options, the menu is full of variety, as well. First and foremost, wanting to keep the locals happy, St. Tropez chose to add a complete vegetarian menu for all the herbivores. What else about the food? One of their most popular Items THEOSIDER.COM

also happens to be one of the most unique. It’s called the French Burger. Even though it’s called the French Burger, it’s mostly famous in London and England. This burger is loaded with onion marmalade, goat cheese—all the toppings—and is stacked between a fresh brioche bun. The menu also offers super savory crapes, salads, a bacon-egg-avocado breakfast sandwich on a fresh, toasty buttery croissant, and even tons of options for the kids. Speaking of the kids, in a desire to cater to the families and surrounding neighborhoods, St. Tropez is offering a “kids eat free” special one night a week! St. Tropez has left no box unchecked. They believe in attention to details, high quality food, and providing a great guest experience. From the immaculate presentation of their dishes to offering catering services for all your party needs, they have got you covered. Another exciting thing happening around here is they’re bringing live music back so be ready for open mic night and local bands serenading your dinner two nights a week. If that’s not enough … the owner is also a software designer and has created an app where you can order your food ahead of time, and upon arrival have it delivered to your table. What a treat for those on a tight schedule, but still want a proper meal. Doors here are open 365 days a year from 7am to 10pm. It’s no surprise that St. Tropez has been in business for over twenty years now, and if we’re lucky, they’ll continue to feed our sweet little town for twenty more! 60

TONY PEPPERONI

WORDS: AARON SCHMIDT  PHOTOS: CHRISTOPHER DONEZ Located in the town center north shopping center, owner Joe Locricchio originally opened Tony Pepperoni back in 1993. Joe’s been in the pizza making business his entire life, as his family is from Sicily—his father Sammy owned a few restaurants there, and his grandfather ran a produce distribution company straight out of Sicily. Born in Mount Clemens, Michigan, Joe opened his first pizza restaurant when he was just eighteen years old. After a little while, he uprooted and moved to Southern California in his early twenties. Quite the entrepreneur, Joe worked his butt off and opened up a handful of Hungry Howie’s restaurants in the area (some readers may remember the one in Encinitas). After running the show at Hungry Howie’s for a few years, Joe decided to switch gears and open a new pizza place—and viola!—Tony Pepperoni was born. Now with three locations, Tony Pepperoni serves up some of the best Detroit style pizza in town. “What makes Tony Pepperoni different than other pizza places?” I asked Tony Pepperoni general manager Sarah Dean. “I would say Tony Pepperoni is different because we genuinely focus on people. We have a nonprofit here called The Betty Fund (bettyfund.org), which is ‘homes for the elderly homeless.’ Right now, The Betty Fund has paid rent THEOSIDER.COM

for three disabled elderly homeless women—one here in Oceanside and two in Orange County. We got them off the street last year from doing fundraisers in the restaurants and golf tournaments. We also always work with local schools and churches. We love donating food,” smiled Sarah. The most popular pizzas are The Teena, Pepperoni, and The Works. They also have a threecheese pepperoni pizza that’s extremely popular and the garlic butter cheese crust is a local favorite and what Tony Pepperoni is mainly known for. The different crust flavors include Cajun, butter, butter cheese, sesame seed, and garlic. It should be mentioned that Tony Pepperoni’s also serves amazing pasta, with Spaghetti & Meatballs and Chicken Parmesan being the main “go-to.” They make their sauce in-house and it's actually Joe’s grandmother’s recipe from Sicily. They make their own dough, too—it’s all made fresh everyday. The pasta also comes with this deep fried Parmesan bread that’s to die for—it’s that good. With eight of the newest and best beers on tap (and tons of bottles from local breweries) and a slew of flat screen TVs, Tony Pepperoni should be on your list of Oceanside pizza places to check out. It’s one of the best mom ’n’ pop Detroit-style Pizzerias in town—hands down. 62
