A word from the publisher

This is it. We are officially ten years in the game and I must say that it feels awesome to have made it this far.

When we first set out to make a magazine about our favorite city, there were a lot of questions to ask. Would advertisers support us? Would our community enjoy the writing and photos, and how would we give a magazine away for free and not miss the revenue from subscriptions?

Well, our questions have been answered and the support we have been blessed to have is all there thanks to our advertisers and readers alike. With that said, we are proud to bring you our tenth anniversary issue.

You may find some familiar faces and places in the following pages. We are taking a look back over the years and revisiting some of our first stories to showcase how they have prospered and continued to be part of the fabric of Oceanside.

We also have a major photo exhibit at the Oceanside Museum of Art called Coastal Exposures: 10 Years of Photography at The Osider Magazine , which opens March 9. To celebrate, we will be throwing a block party there on March 30, featuring DJ Chaps One, along with multiple food and beverage vendors to enjoy.

We also have some limited edition products, including new hats, shirts, and some super limited skateboard decks coming out to celebrate our longevity.

We would also like to thank all of our advertisers, especially the ones who have been with us since day one. Every writer, photographer, and ad sales person who has contributed, as well as our designer, Dwayne Carter—we extend our endless gratitude to you.

They say it takes a village to make things happen and here at The Osider, we truly recognize this fact. We love our city and want to thank you, Oceanside, for everything.

Oceanside's Finest CORY WHITLOCK

For ten years, The Osider has been highlighting Oceanside’s best, brightest, and finest citizens. For our ten year anniversary, it’s fitting that this Oceanside’s Finest is none other than our own small-business-owning, local-loving life resident, and all around good guy, Cory Whitlock.

Cory has been a fan of all things Oceanside since he was a tween. When he made Oceanside his home both personally and professionally, Oceanside won!

Cory’s brick-and-mortar building, Whitlock Surf Company in downtown Oceanside, is a beacon for Oceanside’s surf culture. The Whitlock Surf Experience is so much more than a store, it’s really the description of the family’s dedication to surf. With a giant smile (his regular beaming smile), Cory professed, “we’re not a brand, we’re a family.”

Cory Whitlock was raised on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii, and he’s been surfing since he could walk. His father, Rusty or RW Whitlock, has been a renowned surfboard shaper since 1963. When Cory was twelve years old, his family moved to Lake Elsinore, California. Luckily for Cory, his family was still dedicated to surfing and, luckily for Oceanside, our beaches were the nearest coastal destination.

Beginning in 1984, they would make day and weeklong trips to Oceanside where South Jetty in Oceanside Harbor became his favorite break. Surfing also inspired his entrepreneurism

because, “I had to figure out a way to make money to get to the beach and support my surf habits. I’ve been screenprinting since I was thirteen,” Cory said.

His effort and passion paid off, and he became a professional surfer. When his son, Skylar, was born, he found screenprinting to be an ideal way to support his son, yet continue to work in the surf industry.

The Whitlock Surf Experience began on July 4, 2000. It encompasses Whitlock Surf Shop, Whitlock Ink Screen Printing, and Whitlock Surf

“We learned during COVID that this community takes care of its own. We love our neighbors, and we wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for them”

Factory. All of Whitlock’s businesses are for locals, by locals, right here in Oceanside. Cory credits his wife, Alyssa, for much of his success and the family (including his dad, RW) all work to make the Whitlock Surf Experience a family experience.

Being a presence in the community is key to Whitlock’s success. “We learned during COVID that this community takes care of its own. We love our neighbors, and we wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for them,” Cory explained.

The Whitlock’s give back through fundraisers. They are involved with Wounded Warrior, supporting

adaptive events, Soul Survivor, and Got Your Back San Diego. They are also active participants in Oceanside Boardriders Club, Visit Oceanside, Oceanside MainStreet, and the Oceanside Chamber.

During the high season (summer), Whitlock employs twenty people. “I love summer when the weather is nice, and we get our employees back,” he said. According to Cory, the best part of Oceanside is the community. “We all have to support each other. We don’t get people that try to run you over. We’re all here because we love it, and we take care of each other. If someone is in it for themselves, the locals will run them out,” Cory said.

Their storefront at 609 Mission Avenue offers a Surf Club, Surf Lessons, Surf Camps, Surf Rentals, and retail sales. It’s also where you can see their screen printing machines in action.

In 2023, Whitlock Surf Experience was named Best Surf School in North County. Their surf camp obtains one of only five permits allowed by the City of Oceanside. “We don’t just teach them to surf, we share the stoke.”

Their shop is a real oasis of good people, family, and the essence of what makes Oceanside great; a manifestation of the finest people and things in Oceanside. Thank you, Cory & Alyssa, for showing up every day, sharing the stoke, and being the finest part of our community. (This article is dedicated to the Whitlock's beloved cat, Cleo).

Services for Oceanside Residents

Donation Weeks

Do you have gently used items that are ready for a new life? Free Donation Pickups are available twice a year from April 8-19 and October 7-18. Call (619) 337-9244 to schedule a curbside pickup of up to 8 items.

Landfill Weeks

Do you have items beyond repair? Free Landfill pickups are available twice a year from April 22May 3 and October 21-November 1. Call (760) 439-2824 to schedule a curbside pickup. Please note, Household Hazardous Waste is not accepted.

Attend a Marine Debris Reduction Ordinance Workshop

The City of Oceanside’s Marine Debris Reduction Ordinance will go into effect soon! This new ordinance requires businesses throughout Oceanside to find sustainable alternatives to single-use food serviceware and addresses everyday items that are used only once. Oceanside businesses including but not limited to retail establishments, food service providers, street vendors, hotels, food trucks, and clothing stores will no longer be able to provide polystyrene foam and single-use plastic bags. These products are made of materials that never break down and oftentimes end up as litter in our parks, waterways, and beaches.

In partnership with the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce and MainStreet Oceanside, the City of Oceanside continues to provide educational workshops for businesses about the new ordinance. If you are a business and have questions about how the Marine Debris Reduction Ordinance will impact you, make sure to attend one of the upcoming workshops. Workshops will be held Wednesday, March 27 and Tuesday, May 21. Visit GreenOceanside.org for workshop registration.

Can’t make the upcoming workshops? Don’t worry, the city has recorded and posted their

previous workshops on GreenOceanside.org. There is also lots of additional information about the ordinance, including educational resources for your customers, information on sustainable alternatives, and more. So, make sure to check it out.

A friendly reminder to all food providers in Oceanside: California law now requires that all food service providers may only distribute single-use food serviceware accessories like straws, utensils, and condiments to customers upon request and/or provide them at selfservice stations.

Hidden Gems

RED ROOSTER

The Red Rooster, a true Oceanside classic, is officially under new ownership. Thankfully, the dive bar establishment is staying in local hands.

You may know the new owners from their other businesses around town—Calen and Regis Rae, owners of The Cup, and Keith Albano, owner of Hudson Builder & Electric Corp. They purchased the Red Rooster after being vetted by the previous owner who didn’t want a thing to change about Oceanside’s last dive bar—and neither did they.

“I grew up just a couple of blocks from here and my dad used to come [to the Rooster] all the time. It was so mysterious and I always wanted to go there so bad," Calen said. “When I turned twenty-one, I came here right away and I fell in love with it—best burger, cool dive bar, part of Oceanside. I was all about it. When I heard it was for sale, I was really scared it was going to change to something I didn’t want it to be, so I was like ‘we have to buy it now!’”

The main goal is to keep the Rooster in its OG state. That meant their first order of business was to get rid of the landscape mural on the outside of the bar and bring back the giant red rooster.

But, what about the infamous Rooster burger? Your tastebuds will be ecstatic—the recipe hasn’t changed and it’s just as delicious as it always has been.

You can expect a tasty half-pound burger with cheese, ortega chiles, and grilled onions, classically

prepared behind the bar by your bartender. There’s no place like this in Oceanside, or even all of North County. Be sure to tip your bartender well—they’re pouring beers, frying french fries, grilling burgers, running food, and bussing tables—the whole nine.

If you’re a Rooster regular, then you’ll be happy to see the familiar faces you know and love behind the bar. Leslie and Pebbles, who have been working at the Rooster for a collective twenty-three years, are still proudly holding down the fort…and are ready to pour you your next beer.

The most significant changes you’ll see at the Rooster are more TVs for better sports viewing, making it a hotspot to watch your favorite games. They also upgraded the menu board (but with the same menu items). All in all, it’s the same place it always has been for the past 60 years.

The Rooster itself has been in Oceanside since the ‘60s. It was one of the first dive bars around and it’s now one of the last standing.

The new owners are determined to preserve the culture of Oceanside in the Red Rooster, and to continue its legacy as the top choice for a cold beer for locals and Oceanside’s military personnel, just like it has been for decades.

So, support your local Oceanside small business and stop by the Red Rooster for one of the best burgers in town. Play a game of pool, watch your favorite team win on the big screens, and don’t forget to tip your bartender!

Oceanside AEP6 Study

The Oceanside Arts Commission O’Arts Plan outlines an ambitious vision aimed at the celebration and advancement of arts and culture in the City of Oceanside.

In 2019, the Oceanside Arts Commission initiated a comprehensive effort to assess the economic influence of arts and culture within the city. This project involved active participation in the Arts & Economic Prosperity 6 Study (AEP6) conducted by Americans for the Arts.

Notably, this marked Oceanside's inaugural participation in the study, signifying a new collaboration among communities across the county of San Diego. The collective effort aimed to present a thorough and unified portrayal of the major impact of arts and culture on a countywide scale.

AEP6 reveals that San Diego County’s nonprofit arts and culture sector is a $1.3 billion industry — one that supports 19,771 jobs and generates $320.7 million in local, state, and federal government revenue. In 2022, the nonprofit arts and culture sector in Oceanside played a pivotal role, generating $57.7 million in economic activity throughout the city as reported by the Arts & Economic Prosperity 6 (AEP6) study. The Oceanside Cultural District contributed nearly 80% of the city’s overall economic impact, totaling $45.6 million.

The Oceanside Arts Commission and Oceanside CA Cultural District invite the community to a collective celebration of the arts on Friday, May 3, 2024 from 3-5pm at the Seabird Hotel. Follow @oceansideculturaldistrict for more information.

HARRISON DWELLEY Homegrown

I don’t think it’s possible to live in Oceanside and never have eaten at Beach Break Café.

This family owned café, started in South O, was opened in 1988 by Gary and Zell Dwelley. We featured them in our first issue ten years ago and they have been huge supporters of The Osider since day one.

Their youngest son, Harrison, who now owns the business with lifelong friend and partner, Gary Blair, was born into the business twenty days before they first opened their doors.

Growing up with his older brother, Mitchell, on the floor of the restaurant meant seeing firsthand how close the community in Oceanside really is. They lived right down the street in South O and ran wild in the streets between home and the café. Always within earshot of Zell, calling them back to check in.

Eventually, Harrison went off to college in Long Beach where he played water polo. It didn’t take long to realize that college wasn’t the route he wanted to take, so he left Long Beach and took off to Mexico for a month. Upon his return home to Oside, he found himself back at Beach Break working alongside his family.

As the years went by, Gary and Zell were planning to retire and offered the kids the chance to take over the business. At the time, Harrison wasn’t sure if that was his destiny.

Mitchell and Harrison ended up giving the business a go, but it didn’t initially work out. But, after a personal battle with cancer, Harrison had a new perspective on life. That’s when he and his best friend, Gary, made the move and bought the business from his parents and never looked back.

He also purchased his childhood home in South O, so I guess you could say that everything came back around full circle. Harrison loves Oceanside for the tight community vibes, long time locals, and all of the family and friends he has seen grow up enjoying the café.

With a heavy heart, at the time of this story going to print, we lost who many call their second mom in Zell. She was such an extraordinary person who cared so much about our community and all of the families here in Oceanside. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Dwelley family.

Harrison is, now more than ever, so proud to continue to cultivate the special environment that she and Gary created. I could not imagine a better person to carry their legacy than Harrison. Thank you for everything you do. The family at The Osider salutes you and your amazing family.

Citywide Sports Events Boost Community While Inspiring Champions

Spring in Oceanside kicks off an exciting series of high-profile, city-wide sports events, including Ironman 70.3, Beach Soccer Championships, and Race Across America (RAAM) to name a few. Since most of us aren’t elite athletes, chances are you’ve never thought about why these events matter for Osiders.

The most obvious benefit is the boost they bring to our local economy. Often strategically scheduled during slower leisure tourism periods, these events help fill our hotel rooms and give a lift to local businesses. On average, visitors spend $266 per day with more than 70 percent spent in places other than lodging including neighborhood restaurants, retail shops, and attractions.

On the most basic level, consider this ripple effect: at an average price of $4, even a simple cup of coffee purchased by each Oceanside Ironman 70.3 competitor amounts to over $12,000. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg considering

competitors often arrive a few days prior to get acclimated, with race weekends bringing thousands of visitors.

When our economy is strong, businesses can reinvest to ultimately make our city a more vibrant place to live and work. Plus, our city is better able to fund essential services that we all enjoy such as parks, libraries, recreation, public safety, and more.

Hosting city-wide sports events also yields more intangible benefits. Events like Ironman

and RAAM shine an international spotlight on our destination, enhancing its allure and building its cachet. Just recently, Oceanside was named in the top two for favorite courses globally among Ironman athletes. Consequently, these events not only bolster visitor interest but also attract businesses eager to invest in and be a part of our dynamic community.

The philanthropic contributions of the events we collaborate with also nurture our community well-being. O’side Turkey Trot raises money for

local schools and charitable organizations, while every RAAM team rides for a cause. IRONMAN’s IRONKIDS race helps fund youth recreation scholarships for Oceanside families with donations matched by Visit Oceanside to magnify the impact and reach more locals.

Next time you cross paths with one of these events in Oceanside, consider how each pedal, stroke, or footstep brings prosperity and compassion to our community. We are all fortunate to benefit from these events that call Oceanside home.

Things You Didn’t Know About The “Top Gun” House

Ten years ago, in our first issue, we showcased the “Top Gun” House as our first historical feature. We thought it was time to revisit this legendary home, as its history has changed much within the last decade. Oceanside has several notable landmarks including the Pier and the historic Mission San Luis Rey. However, one of the most beloved landmarks is what we know as the “Top Gun” House. This charming little house was featured in one of the biggest movies of all times, starring one of the biggest Hollywood Stars.

1. Built in 1888, its original location was just one block south, on the corner of Pacific Street and Seagaze Drive, the year Oceanside incorporated as a city.

2. First owned by Dr. and Mrs. Henry Graves of Riverside, the cottage was used as their summer residence. The local paper described it as “their annual vacation by the seaside.” The couple continued to visit Oceanside each year. In 1904 they had an extended stay as the Oceanside Blade reported on May 21, 1904: “Dr. and Mrs. Henry Graves [are] down from Riverside and will remain in their cottage by the seaside until October.”

3. The house was sold in 1905 to Charles Burlock who was appointed deputy constable by Benjamin F. Hubbert in 1897. The Burlocks later sold the house to J. F. Anderson, but even as late as 1914, locals continued to refer to the house at the “Graves’ cottage”. It was then purchased by Angeline Morgan who owned the home for over 40 years.

4.

Lynn and William Rego purchased the house in 1976 and much like Dr. and Mrs. Graves, spent their summers in Oceanside looking over the waters of the Pacific Ocean and renting it out the remainder of the year. It was the Rego's who painted the house its trademark blue and white, while it had been originally painted in earth tones.

5.One day, the seaside cottage caught the eye of a movie scout looking for locations. In June

Actors Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis outside the home.

1985, Paramount Pictures rented it for two weeks to film what would become the blockbuster hit, “Top Gun” released in 1986.

The crew prepped the perimeter of the property by removing parking and street signs and covering the curbs with sand. For Oceanside residents, some of the most memorable scenes of the movie “Top Gun” were filmed there. The cottage was featured as the home of Cruise's love interest, flight instructor Charlie, played by Kelly McGillis. The movie made Tom Cruise a household name and the iconic scene of Maverick riding his motorcycle on the palm-lined Pacific Street is every local’s favorite.

6. In 2001, the City of Oceanside acquired the Graves house through eminent domain to control future development of the oceanfront block in hopes of securing a resort project. As it sat unoccupied, the elements took a toll on the

house which continued to deteriorate. The quaint little house has outlasted 5 piers and for several years sat vacant with its porches sagging and its paint fading.

7. Rumors of its demise persisted but it survived demolition due in part to SOHO (Save Our Heritage Organization) who put the house on its endangered list, naming it as the "last best Victorian oceanfront cottage in San Diego County."

8. In 2018, S. D. Malkin Properties, Inc. announced two new resort projects by developer Jeremy Cohen. Many wondered what would become of the “Top Gun” house. With the support and influence of Save Our Heritage Organization and the Oceanside Historical Society, the Graves house aka “Top Gun” house would be restored by S. D. Malkin and used as the “centerpiece of Oceanside’s much anticipated new oceanfront resort.”

9. The cottage was moved while hotel construction took place and then placed one block north of its original location in front of the Mission Pacific Hotel. It is still situated on North Pacific Street, facing the ocean, which was important in preserving its historical integrity and setting. The work of restoration included restoring the wood cladding, front windows, dismantling the original chimney, and rebuilding it with the same historic bricks, bringing back the "gingerbread" details and restoring both porches. Beautifully painted, the cottage has been reborn.

10. On May 20, 2022, the High-Pie Shop opened in the Top Gun house. Along with selling pies and other treats, it features memorabilia from the movie and a replica motorcycle out front like the one Maverick rode in his iconic scenes. The careful restoration of the historic Graves House, aka the “Top Gun” house, is a crowning jewel on the oceanfront and recognized all over the world.

HARRAH’S RESORT SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

When I wrote about our long-time supporter and partner Harrah's Resort Southern California almost ten years ago, I focused on the excitement of a girl’s getaway. A friend and I enjoyed massages, a day at the pool, and topped it off with dinner and cocktails at The Oyster Bar. We discovered it was just as fun as a Vegas casino trip without the five hours of travel.

Recently, I was lucky enough to enjoy a romantic getaway with my husband. An easy 30 minute drive and we were in our own little world and ready to enjoy some quality time.

Harrah’s has a large variety of rooms and suites to accommodate any size group. Our personal favorite is the Oh So Suite in the 400 plus room North Tower with a large jetted tub overlooking beautiful mountain views and a private balcony, perfect for listening to the sound of the nocturnal creatures with a night cap in hand.

The pool area, which really comes alive when the winter months giveway to sun filled days, has an adult’s only main pool, SoCal’s first swim up

bar, and a 400 foot lazy river. Their Dive Day Club features live DJs and performances from well known artists, and they have twenty-one cabanas, eight hot tubs, and offer “Bites and Sips” during their current hours from 9am-6pm.

Along with over 1500 slot machines and all the traditional card games, they have electronic table games and the Impressive Progressive, California’s first all-table progressive jackpot.

There are plenty of game team members on hand to answer any questions and the service at the bars, restaurants, valet, and front desk is top notch. Their 23,000 square foot events center is a state of the art music venue that seats 2,200 guests and they also have a ballroom, poolside venue, brewery, and lounge spaces available for everything from business meetings to weddings and other celebrations.

The 3000 square foot fitness room is open daily and when you’re ready for some fresh air, there is a nature walk located just across from the valet parking lot. The one mile trail runs along

the San Luis Rey River and is easily accessible to guests of all ages and fitness levels. The quiet path is perfect for bird watching and taking in the scenic views of the native wildlife during a peaceful stroll or a heart pumping run.

The calming and welcoming spa was renovated in 2017 and offers everything from traditional massages to a full service salon for blow-outs and event up-do’s. Harrah’s has over eighteen options for food and drink including Chef Gordon Ramsey’s Hell’s Kitchen, which was voted Best Casino Restaurant in San Diego.

They also have plenty of grab and go options like ‘Ritas Taco Truck, Starbucks, Earl of Sandwich, and Best of Cluck Chicken. The newly rebranded Rincon Reservation Road Brewery is SoCal’s first tribally owned brewery and they craft their large selection of beers using sustainable ingredients under brewmaster Marc Martin.

Other awards Harrah’s has won over the years include Best Local Casino, Best Staycation, and Best Players Club. To date, the resort has donated

$4.3 million dollars to charities across San Diego, Riverside, and Orange counties. Caesars Rewards program (the largest and most rewarding casino loyalty club) allows you special offers and perks at 50 locations throughout the U.S.

It would take a week to truly enjoy all of the amenities but if a quick one nighter is all you have time for, it’s easy to pick a few favorites and manage your time until your next trip. Our trip happened to fall on a colder

day but that didn’t stop us from enjoying a long soak in the hot tub, hitting a few machines, and enjoying a quiet dinner at the seafood restaurant, Salt & Fin.

We recommend that you check our community calendar for upcoming live music, stand up comedy and other events because whether it’s a friends getaway, a quick jaunt with your partner, or even a family vacation, you’ll find there’s something at Harrah’s for any occasion. Harrah’s

Steven King's "Thinner" Screening & Cast Reunion

Hollywood doesn’t often come to Oceanside But when it does, it’s most certainly with the flare of a red carpet event. This year’s claim to fame was the official kick off of the Annual Oceanside International Film Festival.

This yearly event always brings crowds seeking the thrills that film can offer; however, this specific evening dipped its toes into decades of cult classic patronage. A reunion of the cast from Steven King’s "Thinner", accompanied by a showing of the movie, certainly didn’t disappoint.

Some people get to relish the joy of a high school reunion, but those who act on the big screens, get to revel in the pleasure of moments like this. Evenings of intimate reciprocation, celebrating and remembering victorie—savoring

the fruits of their labor, even that much sweeter thirty years after the first bloom.

Some movies go big as blockbuster hits, then just go away. But the novelty about this production, aside from being a Steven King classic, was “the challenge of making this film. It was a physical challenge, applying the fat suit and the makeup took hours. I always felt the film didn’t get the critical accolades it deserved, but what’s happened is, it’s never stopped playing, and people love it! It’s got a huge fan base, it’s amazing and it’s spreading!” Tom Holland, director of Thinner, the Chuckie series, and other thriller films graciously emoted these thoughts.

Several of the other cast members, Joe Mantegna, Robert John Burke, and Kari Wuhrer,

were present and echoed these sentiments of the novelty of the talented cast and making this movie.

While chatting with Joe Mantegna, he expounded upon these ideas. “Something like this (the reunion red carpet event) is perfect. This is the reason we’re doing this, it’s wonderful to see everyone. It’s special to do a Steven King film because he’s going to leave a legacy. I like to be able to check that box as an actor. Those are things you appreciate; it’s kind of nice to say you worked with the best.”

The red carpet event is indeed the best way to launch into an event, but the rest of the film festival followed in an equally celebratory suit, impressing yet another round of viewers with the impressive films in this year’s line up.

Oceanside International Film Festival 2024

A world-class film festival at Brooks Theater

The Oceanside International Film Festival (OIFF) grows in popularity every year and, now in its thirteenth year, the 2024 OIFF did not disappoint!

This year’s festival ran from Tuesday, February 20 to Saturday, February 24 at the classic Brooks Theater in the heart of downtown Oceanside. Presented by Visit Oceanside, OIFF 2024 is “five days of cinema, music, art and community both of a local and international flavor in one of California’s fourteen designated Cultural Districts.”

The Brooks Theater was aglow on opening night when the red carpet was rolled out and all the glamor a film festival deserves ensued for all attendees.

On the wall, the short Film, “California Light” by Robert Denfeld was playing. Filmmaker Denfeld proudly described his film, “I just want as many Californian’s to watch it as possible because it’s really a love letter to California.”

The Osider Magazine’s own, Zach Cordner, was featured on the Brooks Wall in the rock n’ roll music photo display entitled, Moments From The Seen Part II.

After a welcome by OIFF Executive Director, Lou Niles, he introduced musician, producer, and film composer, Jason Hill. An in-depth and captivating Q&A with Jason Hill engaged the audience. Jason spoke about being a struggling artist in San Diego, then finally finding fame with bands like LOUIS XIV, and then taking a different and equally exciting career path by composing music and working with directors like David Fincher of Gone Girl. It was surreal for attendees to be up-close-and-personal with such a legend in the industry, and that’s the charm of a film festival in such an intimate venue.

Every single movie over the five days was pivotal and an unforgettable experience for the 1,500 attendees. A very cool feature is the opportunity for a Q&A discussion panel with present filmmakers after every film collection.

The culmination of the festival was the 2024 Oceanside International Film Festival Award Ceremony on Saturday night. A Grand Jury selected the winners (full list below). Lou Niles felt humbled, “It was a special year with a great batch of emotional and stirring films. We loved kicking off the week with the incomparable Jason Hill and Moments from the Seen. The feedback on Opening Night was glowing all week long from attendees. Then wrapping up the week with our Best Picture winner, ‘The Countryman’ by Andy Kastelic which painted a visual experience through a brought-to-life Steinbeck-paced story that hit on everything you want from a film. It also won Best Art Direction and Best Cinematography.”

As the 2024 festival ends, plans are already in place for the 2025 OIFF next February. It’s definitely an experience for every Osider, and it’s an honor to have such an incredibly well-executed event in our city.

Coastal Exposures: 10 Years of Photography at The Osider Magazine

A New Oceanside Museum of Art Exhibition

In honor of our ten year anniversary, we’re excited to announce our three photography exhibitions at the Oceanside Museum of Art. Entitled “Coastal Exposures: 10 Years of Photography at The Osider Magazine,” the exhibition showcases photography in three different galleries. Along with featuring our favorite photography over the last ten years, we also have exhibitions on Bruce the Trenchcoat Guy and Oceanside High School’s Pirate Pics Photography Club.

The exhibition runs from Saturday, March 9 until Sunday, July 28. We hope to see everyone at our block party at OMA on Saturday, March 30 from 5-7pm to celebrate the exhibition and The Osider ’s ten year anniversary! Member’s Only Car Club along with Pro Siempre Car Club will line the street with classic lowriders. Music will be provided by Oceanside’s DJ Chaps One along with local food vendors. It’s fun for the whole family! It’s free for OMA members and $15 for visitors.

Coastal Exposures: 10 Years of Photography at The Osider Magazine

For over ten years, The Osider Magazine has documented and told the stories of our Oceanside community in a photography-based print magazine. Co-founder and professional photographer, Zach Cordner, has curated the finest and most unique images of the city of Oceanside for this exhibition. The backbone to each issue is the fine photography showcased within the pages, shot by an eclectic group of Oceanside photographers who tirelessly document the city’s rapidly changing beauty. This is a collection of images that stand out over the last decade.

The Osider prides itself in showcasing compelling images. We like to think of it as Oceanside’s own National Geographic. The city is a diverse mix of cultures and environments that makes for a photographer’s dream to document.

Our photographers go the extra mile to create one-of-a-kind imagery that goes way beyond your typical sunset photo at the pier. These images evoke the emotion of an ever-changing city. The photography in The Osider preserves moments in time that make our city shine. We look forward to the next ten years as we continue to document Oceanside’s urban and natural beauty.

Bruce The Trenchcoat Guy: Oceanside’s Old Man & The Sea

A retired United States Postal Service letter carrier has slowly taken Oceanside by storm. Draped in a black trenchcoat while carrying a GoPro on a selfie stick, Bruce Parker has become a fixture along The Strand. Lifeguards constantly get calls from concerned tourists reporting an elderly man trying to kill himself by standing on the edge of crashing waves or wading out into the sea only to get pummeled by the breakwater. Sure he likes the shock factor of freaking people out, but what you’re witnessing is a man not afraid to show his joy for the sea. With every wave that hits him, you can see Bruce glow with happiness and respect for the raw power of the ocean.

So, why the Trenchcoat? Bruce explained that he started wearing the heavy coat to shield him from the sun on his long walks on the beach. With his trademark coat, Bruce has become a local celebrity recognized and adored by the locals.

This gallery is dedicated to all things Bruce, with photographs from an array of local photographers that have been able to witness and capture Bruce’s unique awesomeness. With these images we honor the man who keeps Oceanside weird.

Pirate Pics:

Ten Years of Oceanside High School’s Photography Club

This gallery showcases the amazing photography work of students from Oceanside High School’s Pirate Pics after school photography club.

Named after the famous Pirate mascot of OHS, the Pirate Pics program was founded in 2014 by The Osider ’s Zach Cordner and OHS photography instructor Paul Ruez. Now in its tenth year, Pirate Pics is headed by Zach and OHS Photography Instructor, Justin Moodie.

Through the program, students learn the ins and outs of photography while using our beautiful city as their canvas. Pirate Pics can also help them reach the next level if they want to pursue professional photography or photojournalism as a career path.

Accomplished professional photographers volunteer their time and talent to share techniques with the students about their work and careers.

Students are able to go out and shoot with the pros for one-on-one mentoring. This hands-on experience and guidance allows them to build an amazing portfolio. Stellar students are given opportunities to assist on actual photo shoots and have even been published on the cover of The Osider Magazine

Over the years these OHS students have documented Oceanside through their own view. Many of the images displayed have been printed in the pages of The Osider. Working with the magazine, these talented students get real life experience as photojournalists documenting their hometown. This exhibition features ten years of the student’s finest work.

Ten Years of Change in Oceanside

For ten years, The Osider has captured the infallible uniqueness of our people.

The years between 2014 and 2024 may seem like a blip on the timeline of life, but it has been a decade of major change and we’ve been there capturing one story, one picture, and one moment in time. Ten years of Oceanside captured through meaningful narrative and exquisite photographs.

The Osider began production at a time when media content was going digital. Quite possibly, without even knowing it when we first started, The Osider has documented our city’s rise. So, here we are, ten years later, continuing to share our awesomeness.

What’s changed the most? Here are twelve things that represent ten years of change in Oceanside.

48
BROOKELYN THOMPSON / PIRATE PICS 49

HOTELS

As part of Oceanside’s decades-long Master Plan, downtown Oceanside has been slated to build high-end hotels overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

The empty lots and parking lots finally gave way to reveal the Mission Pacific Hotel and The Seabird Resort. The two hotels made their debut to locals and guests in May 2021.

The skyline of downtown Oceanside has been rapidly upscaling. Updating the Graves House, or “Top Gun” house, has been a huge draw for tourism, as well. The historic Top Gun house is placed directly in front of Mission Pacific Hotel and is home to The Famous High Pie in the Top Gun House.

If you take a look at downtown today compared to ten years ago, the new hotels are a major noticeable difference in Oceanside’s landscape. Today’s development represents our continual growth and, while those who know the old Oceanside surely miss it, each new hotel puts Oceanside further on the map as a coastal hot spot.

FLYING BRIDGE

The iconic 1960’s “Flying Bridge Restaurant'' was officially torn down in 2022 marking the “end of an era.”

The restaurant was built as an addition to the successful Bridge Motel on the north end of (then) Hill Street. It offered panoramic views of Oceanside Harbor and the Pacific Ocean. It was a welcomed and unique sight to travelers along the 101 corridor.

Designed by Tom Hayward, an architect of note, it utilized “Googie” architecture. “Googie architecture can be recognized by several design elements, which include cantilevered roofs, sharp angular or eccentric shapes that are built to resemble a specific object like a space rocket, and in this building’s case, a ship,” according to Oceanside Historian, Kristi Hawthorne.

Around 2008, the business closed and, subsequently, fell into disrepair. Unfortunately, it will not be rebuilt (as was once hoped) and is lost to the history books of Oceanside.

MAIN ATTRACTION

Love it or hate it—the “Purple Church” is gone. Main Attraction on North Coast Highway 101 was the last of the adult entertainment venues left in Oceanside. However, the building was not always controversial.

It dated back to the early 1940s and was once associated with some of the biggest acts in country and western music. The building had many names and housed numerous businesses, but in 1990, it assumed the name Main Attraction.

The Main Attraction hosted its final show in 2021 and was demolished to make room for what is now the housing complex, Alta Oceanside.

MISSION AVENUE

In 2010, City Council voted four-to-one to change a four-block section of Mission Avenue. The idea was to encourage a pedestrian-friendly downtown Oceanside and energize Mission Avenue as the “Gateway to Oceanside.”

To say the least, it was highly controversial. It was 2014 when Mission Avenue officially transformed from a four-lane, two-way street to a two-lane, one-way street (westbound). The city also installed reverse angle parking. It’s been ten years, and the project is a success!

Driving down Mission Avenue is a hustle & bustle of local, visitors, and happy business owners. Oceanside has even accepted the strange concept of “back-in parking.”

SAND ON OUR BEACHES

Where did our sand go? Surprisingly, it’s not a new question. Reports from the 1970’s were also asking the same question because the sand depletion goes back 80 years to the construction of Oceanside Harbor.

The harbor impedes the natural flow of sand. In conjunction with development along the coast and upstream, the southern two-thirds of Oceanside’s 3.7-mile coastline past the pier has now eroded to rocks.

For years, dredging of the harbor was a “bandaid” to replenish sand, just to have it swept away the following year in a vicious cycle. Just recently (in 2024), Oceanside City Council voted unanimously to implement a pilot project to build two artificial headlands, or “speed bumps,” installed by the Australian firm International Coastal Management.

Time will tell if the project is effective, but it’s a new solution to the problem of sandless beaches. We’ll know more in ten years when reported in our twentieth anniversary issue if we’re sitting on sandy beaches.

RESTAURANTS

There are a few Oceanside restaurants that have stood the test of time in a delicious way, like Anita’s. They’ve been feeding Oceanside since 1973.

However, it was The Flying Pig that took a flying leap of faith in the Oceanside restaurant scene in 2011. Their arrival signaled that Oceanside may be the next hot spot— and they were right.

Shortly before their arrival, San Diego Magazine

described Oceanside as, “one of the curious dining voids in San Diego.” Fast Forward to 2024, and Oceanside has a thriving dining scene.

There are world-renowned chefs, Michelin restaurants, local breweries, vegan, ramen, etc., you name it, Oceanside has it—and it’s so good. From East Oceanside to coastal Oceanside, it’s a culinary hot spot.

ZACH CORDNER VLADIMIR MEDVINSKY

OCEANSIDE HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION

It all began in 1960! Oceanside High School’s Class of 1960 was the first class to receive their diplomas in the Oceanside Bandshell, in what is now called, The Junior Seau Oceanside Pier Amphitheater.

It was a tradition that most thought would go on forever! However, increasing crowds and deteriorating buildings forced Oceanside High School to reconsider the location of their future graduations. The pandemic and its hybrid graduation ceremonies were the beginning of the end for OHS graduations at the amphitheater. Understandably, it was a beautiful tradition that many were sad to see end.

The Junior Seau Oceanside Pier Amphitheater is looking at upgrades in the near future, so stay tuned for that gentrification.

RUBY’S (THE RESTAURANT AT THE END OF THE PIER)

It’s hard to believe that it’s almost been three years since Ruby’s Diner shuttered its doors at the end of the pier in 2021 after 30 years in business.

Since then, the building has stood vacant, awaiting another cool place to eat. Luckily, the Brine Box opened “in a fish shack at the end of the pier” to feed hungry locals and visitors strolling the pier.

The Brine Box is the brain-child and chefinspired establishment of Davin and Jessica Waite (owners of Wrench & Rodent and The Plot). With a cool address, 1 Oceanside Pier, everyone knows where to find it. Hopefully, the Brine Box will have a cool neighbor in the near future; it won’t be Ruby’s but word is it’ll be something amazing to dine at with sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean.

SWAP MEET/OCEAN KAMP

The Valley Drive-In Movie Theater closed in the late 1990’s and was replaced by the Oceanside Swap Meet.

For years, the swap meet hosted vendors and patrons copacetically on the weekends. It was a meeting place and a melting pot of Oceanside awesomeness with everything from haircuts to used bikes.

Rumors of big-box stores taking over the space perpetuated for years until it wasn’t a rumor anymore, and the swap meet closed in 2019. In late 2023, the Ocean Kamp settled a lawsuit and the building commenced. The 92-acres in San Luis Rey River Valley will be approximately 667 homes with other neighborhood necessities, including a wave park.

With nearly 70% of Oceanside voters voting no on L in November 2020, the North River Farms development was defeated.

Well, not really. It was a long-fought battle, but in the end, the developers won and North River Farms is currently being built.

The number of homes was reduced, but the agricultural-planned community on N. River Road is under construction.

OCEANSIDE CULTURAL DISTRICT

In 2017, Oceanside was named one of fourteen California Cultural Districts. With the adoption of state legislation, California Cultural Districts were created by the California Arts Council.

Oceanside is one of fourteen inaugural designated districts dispersed throughout the majestic state. Oceanside is home to an iconic pier, world-class theaters, a picturesque harbor, a state of the art museum, a surf museum, its very own artist’s alley, renowned tattoo parlors, symbolic library, amazing local music and an unequivocal restaurant/craft brew scene.

EL CORAZON

El Corazon Park encompasses more than 450 acres of publicly owned land located in “the heart” of our city.

The park’s master plan was approved by voters more than a decade ago and is now coming to fruition.

So far, the SoCal Sports Complex is built. The Senior Center is built. The William A Wagner Aquatic Center is built. And, the biggest development yet, the Frontwave Arena is set to open in fall 2024. It will host major events and the San Diego Sockers. We’re sure our twentieth issue will have the entirety of the master plan completed.

As with most anniversaries, The Osider plans on having many more—and documenting it all along the way. Thank you to everyone for reading us, following us, and making Oceanside AMAZING!

Every good neighborhood has a local market that we depend on for the essentials required for daily living. In South O, we have much more than that with Cream of The Crop.

For over 25 years, owner, Harry Najjar, has been providing our community with the highest quality products to live the healthy lifestyle that us Californians are accustomed to. We featured them ten years ago when The Osider first launched. To celebrate, we thought it was time to shine the spotlight on them once again. All of those years serving the community is an amazing feat and deserves a nice pat on the back to say the least.

When they first arrived, Oceanside was still a rough place to start a business, but Harry saw

the potential and recognized that a place with healthier options was just what Oceanside needed and for that we thank him.

COTC was the first natural food store I can remember seeing in Oceanside, with an offering of amazing organic produce, gluten free options, and a host of vegan delights. The store is well merchandised and always super clean and organized. COTC also offers homeopathic healthcare options and spiritual items such as white sage, essential oils, and incense just to name a few.

The beer and wine selection are also topnotch. My personal favorite has always been the deli, where you can enjoy freshly made sandwiches, grab and go items such as salads of different varieties, and

delicious soups. If you can name it, they have you covered. The staff is always there to greet you with a warm smile and can direct you to whatever you may be looking for within the store.

Thank you for all the great food and service over the years Cream of the Crop, Oceanside loves you.

Local Business

Chloe Fanghella is the face and magic behind The Blonde Goat, Oceanside’s newest (and tiniest!) salon, located off Wisconsin Avenue.

Before diving into Chloe’s story, we of course had to know the meaning behind the name.

The “Blonde G.O.A.T.” started as a nickname for Chloe, whose friends and clients began calling her that after numerous blonde “rehab jobs.” The joke goes that Chloe didn’t know what G.O.A.T. stood for (for everyone scratching their heads: Greatest of All Time). With her long blonde locks and talent for fixing blonde hair gone wrong (usually at the hands of other stylists), the nickname stuck. And boy, is it perfect for her vibrant and eccentric, yet elevated space.

Originally from Encinitas, Chloe moved to Oceanside at the age of nineteen. She was working as a M.A.C. makeup artist and bartending on the side,“taking a turn at all of Oside’s favorite dive establishments and moonlighting as a therapist,” she jokingly added.

THE BLONDE GOAT

While she was everyone’s favorite therapist behind the bar, behind the chair at the Oceanside College of Beauty (real Osiders will remember, RIP), Chloe began falling in love with hair styling. Fast forward to the COVID pandemic which presented a unique opportunity for Chloe, ever the entrepreneur, to build out a home studio.

She began seeing clients who couldn’t go in person to their favorite salons, all the while manifesting a space of her own. When the perfect spot became available on the corner of Wisconsin and Tremont, Chloe’s manifestation came to fruition.

Renovations began in June 2023, and with help from family, friends, and her partner, they installed plumbing, light fixtures, demoed the old loft and sliding barn door, and painted.

The doors opened in October to a beautifully curated space. It’s one where masculine and feminine come together, with soothing neutral tones offset by a bold black accent wall and walnut slatted wood paneling, and complemented with disco ball decor and pops of plants.

While it’s usually Chloe behind the chair, her business partner, Kerri, can be found a few days a week holding down the fort. Together, they offer haircuts, root touch ups, highlights, color, and

wedding hair and makeup on the weekends. Ask her about her favorite services to perform though, and Chloe will tell you it’s a tie between custom color and hand-tied hair extensions.

“They’re just so transformative. As women, we identify by our hair, and it impacts how we feel. Whether you’re suffering from hair loss, were ‘blessed’ with naturally fine hair, or have been the victim of a bad bleach job (hi!), color and extensions can transform how you feel and see yourself. They can be so empowering. To me, it’s this power of transformation that makes what I do so soul-quenching.”

For Chloe, opening The Blonde Goat has been a dream come true. She’s thrilled to be a part of the Oceanside community, a community she’s fallen head over heels with. More than thrilled, she’s proud to be a part of Oceanside’s journey from sleepy beach town to a maturing, thriving hub of small business owners and creatives.

TIKKA MASALA HUT

We moved to the Valley about two years ago like many others to purchase a house we could almost afford.

One of the main things we noticed was a lack of food options in the valley! If you wanted something other than Mexican or pizza, you were pretty much out of luck.

Thankfully, there has been a recent explosion of Asian flavors in town. The most recent and tastiest addition is Tikka Masala Hut located in the Marketplace Del Rio shopping center right next to Maxdon’s.

What sets Tikka Masala Hut apart from others is their obsession with serving the absolute best traditional Northern Indian food. They grind their own spices and absolutely everything is made in house! Every sauce, flatbread, and curry is made to order which guarantees the most authentic flavors every time. Essentially, the food is made fresh and totally worth the wait as it is all devastatingly good.

We also love that this restaurant is a total family affair. Tikka Masala Hut is run by fourth generation chef, Parveen Kumar Saini, and his brother, Shiv Kumar, whose family has been focused on Indian cuisine for decades. Parveen’s wife and daughter also help, so it truly is all about the family.

While sitting down with owner, Chef Kumar, for an interview, he graciously let us try a sampling of some of their most popular dishes. When asked why he chose Oceanside for his own restaurant, he shared that when he first arrived from India, he lived in New York for about seven years. It was a bit too cold and they wanted to come to California as the weather is similar to India.

They relocated here in 2016 and had a catering company that covered all of Southern California. Their catering grew through word of mouth in the Indian community and allowed them to thrive during the difficult COVID years.

It was through catering delicious authentic Northern Indian cuisine that they realized there was a real need for an actual restaurant that did things authentically. After several years, they decided to invest in a brick and mortar place to call their own here in our little town, and we are thrilled that they did.

The delicious dishes we tried ranged from their massive menu, which started with appetizers of unique Indian street food like Chat, Pakora and Samosas. Chat is very specific to India and those who know know that it is nearly impossible to find!

Pani Puri is a famous street food that is a ball shaped hollowed out semolina treat that is stuffed with potato and onion and also filled with an herbaceous mint water. It sounds bizarre but it is fabulously savory and yet refreshing at the same time.

Samosas are a fried to perfection pastry filled with potato, spices, and chickpeas served with a side of tamarind chutney and a coriander mint chutney for dipping. These were a little spicy so be aware that they have a bit of a kick! The mixed Veg Pakora are deep fried vegetables coated in graham flour and spices, so crunchy and yummy!

Next, we tried the Chicken Tikka Masala, their signature dish which consists of boneless chicken served in a spiced tomato cream sauce. It was so deliciously rich and creamy, and the flavor was perfect!

We also tried the Mango Chicken Curry, which features a flavorful dairy free curry and boneless chicken breast highlighted with tasty chunks of sweet mango. It was surprisingly good and I don't usually like fruit in my savory, but this is a must try!

The mixed vegetables were a new take on veggies for me. It combined cauliflower, potatoes,

green beans, peas, and bell peppers simmered with onion, garlic, ginger, and tomatoes finished with Indian spices that make this a vegetarian go-to dish. We also had their Indian basmati rice and garlic naan flatbread to accompany the entrees. Last but not least, we had the delicious Mango Lassi, a popular sweet smoothie drink.

They are also very proud to specialize in traditional Indian desserts and while they feature around twenty desserts at the storefront, they can actually make over 700 different types of traditional desserts! Basically, anything you want they can make! We enjoyed the Jalebi, a deep fried sweet treat that comes soaked in an intoxicating sugar syrup. These were dangerously good!

We are so happy that the Kumar brothers have chosen Oceanside as their home and look forward to seeing them continue to grow. Be sure to stop by for delicious curries, say a quick “hello!” to Chef Kumar, and don’t forget to ask about their catering or specialty desserts menu for your next function or party!

FLYING PIG PUB AND KITCHEN

Do you ever find yourself craving some of that down-home southern deliciousness? You know the kind of meal that will be so rich and fulfilling that you immediately feel the need for a cozy rest? Well, Flying Pig is just the place you are looking for.

Located right downtown on Mission Avenue just off Coast Highway, Flying Pig specializes in Southern cuisine straight from the source. Opened in 2011 by Roddy and Aaron Browning, the first location was originally on Tremont Street.

Everybody quickly heard about this place and it’s considered by most a major part of the food revolution here in Oside. We all fell in love with the food and vibe. The support was something that Roddy and Aaron were humbly grateful for, but when COVID hit, Roddy was truly amazed by our community and how we supported each other as small businesses and patrons alike.

He stated that Oceanside is the most incredible city that he has ever been part of and could not imagine having his business anywhere else on the planet. Fast forward to 2021 when they opened the doors to their current location, and the support from the community still runs strong.

Right when you walk in the door, you are transported to what feels like you are on vacation on Bourbon Street. The rich wood bar, exposed

ceiling beams, and eclectic pieces of furniture and art gives you that unique down-home feeling.

To the left is another recently renovated room that houses what they call the East Wing. This space is warm and inviting, perfect for private parties, which must be reserved in advance, of course. On normal days, you can sit in the East Wing as a walk in when not booked out.

Chef Samantha Parker and her Sous Chef, Gage Rearick, bring the heat with flavorful dishes like their famous fried chicken and mashed potatoes, grilled Duroc pork chops and, of course, shrimp and grits. And we can’t forget their heartwarming mac and cheese.

Also, be aware of the weekly specials that Sam is known for, including braised short ribs over polenta and rib eye steak with cheesy grits.

The wine and beer selection on offer will create the perfect balance to your meal. GM Michaela Spring will make sure that your pairing is just right along with a great dining experience.

The Pig also boasts a full bar with plenty of craft cocktail options to wet your whistle. The Flying Pig is here to stay and like the story we did ten years ago, this place is still 100 percent Osider approved!

SAN LUIS REY BAKERY

The building that would become San Luis Rey Bakery was built in the late 1890s, one hundred years after its namesake, Mission San Luis Rey.

The bakery-restaurant started as the area’s first saloon along the historic El Camino Real, the 600-mile road that connects all twenty-one Spanish missions along the California coast.

The road is considered the earliest EuroAmerican trade route in the United States, and for many years, the saloon (and later hotel, twopump gas station and convenience store, and Mexican restaurant and bakery) was the only building in the Oceanside Valley. It catered not only to those traveling along “the royal road,” but also to the many laborers working in the nearby tomato fields.

Jose and Saula Mendoza took over the San Luis Rey Bakery in 2007 and the way Jose told it, they got there “by mistake.” Their business partners backed out of the deal they were meant to go in on together, leaving him, his wife, and kids to pick up the pieces of the bakery, restaurant, and catering venue all wrapped into one.

Jose recalled those first years as some of the hardest in his life. He said he quickly realized “it’s less hard to start a new business than to take over an existing one,” and his mantra became, “You made it one year, you can make it to two. You made it five years, you can make it to seven.”

Thankfully, the Mexican bakery-restaurant is still thriving and the Valley community couldn’t

be luckier to have Jose and his team whipping up fresh loaves of bread, cookies, and homemade Mexican staples.

What sets SLR Bakery apart is not only their commitment to made-from-scratch sauces (“No cans opened here!”), fresh ingredients, and baked-in-house pastries, but how they have married the business’s rich history and traditions with their own special touches.

Their famous cheese danishes and cream cheese-strawberry pinwheels stay true to the bakery’s original recipe, and their sticky buns are made the old-fashioned way, with slow-simmered caramel and pecans hand-pressed into the dough.

Their enchilada sauce, handed down from the former owners with just some small tweaks, is the backbone of some of their most popular items. “We actually can’t change it,” Jose confided. “Our regulars will get upset, and we have to keep our customers happy!”

The rancho sauce, used to smother chile rellenos and huevos rancheros, is a house specialty, slow-cooked and tasted until just right. Bell peppers, onions, and tomatoes are sauteed in a closely guarded secret spice blend for their popular fajitas.

Jose’s favorite item though? The weekend menudo. Tripe, chiles, hominy, onions, and aromatics are stewed in a large stock pot, which is started Friday and gone by Sunday.

“Menudo is known as a hangover cure,” Jose

explained, “and we have customers that come every weekend for it. Our servers only have to ask, ‘small or large?’”

With colorful traditional textile tablecloths, photos of vaqueros from days past, and Mission art adorning the walls, San Luis Rey Bakery feels like a blast from the past.

Their food, however, is anything but. Flavors are bright and bold, the bread freshly baked and the cookies crumbly and nostalgic.

“We’ll be here a long time to come,” Jose said. And we are so grateful for that.
