he worst flooding in a century recently hit the Balkans, and once I was able to visit the hardest hit areas it confirmed for me how vital your support was. We were able to make some immediate gifts from our ‘Harvest for the Hungry’ funds, but the flood gifts also rapidly came in.

The total now stands at about £35,000 and we are overwhelmed with how much good it can do. I think of one man, Goran, living with his family in Banja Luka in Bosnia Herzegovina. Until recently he had a construction job which paid €1 an hour. Now that is gone, and his home is completely flooded too. He, his wife and their two children sleep on the floor in one dried out room. The house is bare because sewage mixed with the flood water made everything unusable; it all had to be thrown away.

Your gifts enabled the local church to offer food and furniture and develop long term links that will offer a deeper hope than even aid can provide. Of course, if the floods were the only need it would be bad enough, but the truth is there is so much going on across Europe! There are wonderful stories of hope combined with the need for support for many of our amazing partners. This is why we are now making this magazine bi-monthly, meaning two extra editions over the year, and more opportunity to tell you what God is doing.

We will also be editing a special ‘25th Anniversary of the fall of the wall’ issue for November and December, and you will be delighted to know we have enlisted Gary Cox, our Senior Ambassador, to bring to our attention some of the great stories from the period!

Away That’s what had happened to many families whom I met on a recent trip to the Balkans. Their homes and dreams have been literally washed away by flood waters up to five metres in height.

Goran and his family are living in a poor part of the city in houses that were temporary accommodation 20 years ago—wood frames, with a mixture of paper and glue instead of bricks. His circumstances should be better as he is bright, capable and used to be in the army. Today, Goran is without work, although his previous construction job only paid €1 an hour (he worked 10 hours a day). Now he feels his prospects are hopeless, a fact underlined by the 50,000 unemployed looking for work in a city of 200,000.

Goran Yovanavich, a man I met in Banja Luka, Bosnia Herzegovina, exemplifies this plight. When I visited him we sat outside the house on some old bricks at a makeshift table. His wife was embarrassed that they could only offer water and not juice or coffee. Later some black coffee emerged—I guess it was borrowed from neighbours—and although I desperately wished they would not expend the effort, I also knew how important hospitality

Now he feels his prospects are hopeless, a fact underlined by the 50,000 unemployed looking for work in a city of 200,000.

The government has promised funds to help Goran and other flood victims, but nothing has yet materialised. He and others like him are deeply sceptical that any help will ever materialise; they have heard such rhetoric before, and know it usually just precedes more broken promises. If it were not for the 100 euros a month coming in from a helpful aunt’s pension they would have nothing.

Hearing all this I am so glad I have not visited alone, and that help is at hand.

Sinisa Stojkovic is one of the brave Christian leaders of Bosnia Herzegovina, standing for Christ in a country where evangelical Christians number less than 500. His congregation is a signpost to the Kingdom as it combines people from Muslim and Serbian backgrounds, and their remit is to share the love of Christ with all who will listen. Goran is a Christian and attends the church, so when the floods came, help could not only be offered to him, but also to others in the local community through his contacts.

Sinisa’s church is one of the largest in the country—sometimes they have as many as 40 people in the congregation— but they have nowhere near enough resources to offer aid and ongoing support to the flood victims that come their way. I was very glad to know that after my visit I would be able to send some of the funds collected from the TEN Flood Appeal to enable him and his church to continue to help people like Goran. As always, the real beauty of the work will be that material help is offered alongside a lasting eternal hope in Christ, and a local community of His people to join and explore this in.

21 / EH’s building programme has recommenced. They’re excited to “actually see the building rise!”

Pray for the resources for that development and for Marinela as she leads the vision.

22 / “Pray for blessings and productivity of the National Taskforce on Development of Volunteering in Palliative Care in Romania” which EH is represented in. “Our aim is to inspire more people to join our vision and to reach out to more hurting hearts, expanding palliative care services to the unreached communities in the country.”

Emergency Balkans Flood Appeal – Report

across Europe, who in turn are known for sharing the gospel in word and deed. This ‘joined up’ biblical and holistic approach to the Christian life and witness is what we believe leads to real change in people and communities. Therefore, we knew we had to act when the floods hit, and with the help of dedicated volunteers (again, thank you and bless you!) the Emergency Flood Appeal went out just two days after the weekend of the floods.

At the time of writing, about £35,000 has been collected (including gift aid), an incredible sum that can make a huge difference. The four main cities we have looked at working in are Banja Luka, Tuzla, Sarajevo and Obrenovac (the last is in Serbia, the others in Bosnia Herzegovina).

n May 2014, the worst flooding in a century hit the Balkans when about three months’ worth of rain fell in just a few days. In some places the flood waters reached five metres in height so that they completely covered homes. In other places landslides were the main problem and whole houses were washed away or damaged beyond repair. Old minefields as well as their warning signs were displaced, meaning further danger in the future.

Although it is hard to collate exact figures, the combined news reports seem to indicate that as many as 2.5 million people have been affected, and over 50,000 homes have been flooded and/or destroyed. Dozens of people were killed or went missing.

This comment by the Bosnia Herzegovina Foreign Minister, Zlatko Lagumdzija, sums up the reality: “During the war many people lost everything.

Today, again they have nothing.”

Emergency Balkans Flood Appeal – Report

Homes have been left irreparable and uninhabitable, everything has had to be discarded.

with requests for help, we made immediate transfers to enable the purchase of food, clothing, medical supplies and hygiene products. We also arranged for Andy Drake, CEO of TEN, to travel out to the Balkans and see first-hand the results of the flood so that we could better decide how the remaining funds could be used.

Suffice it to say that tens of thousands of people are facing a very bleak future as all of their possessions have been lost, their homes are in some cases irreparable, and of course being the Balkans there is no insurance. Never has practical help and a message of eternal hope been so needed.

This is why offering compassion out of a local church community is so powerful. In Obrenovac this is effectively demonstrated by a group from Novi Sad, led by ex-drug addicts who have turned from drugs and turned toward Christ. Many of you will know about this amazing work led by Danny and Vera Kuranji, and won’t be surprised that they have thrown themselves and their people 12

wholeheartedly into being a blessing in Obrenovac. The city had no evangelical witness, and now it has one when the need is greatest. Andy Drake said of it: “The Christian work in Obrenovac, whereby ex-drug addicts who have been cured by Christ and His love are now fixing houses, supplying food, bringing new furniture and offering compassion and love, as well as laying the foundation for a new evangelical church, is one of the greatest examples of gospel living I can remember seeing.”

...Bulgaria

B

ulgaria is a beautiful country that is increasing in attractiveness amongst tourists. Despite being an archaeological goldmine and having a history rooted in Christianity (864), Bulgaria is becoming heavily influenced by Islamic persuasion.

TEN currently works with nine different partners all across Bulgaria who are involved with their local churches, working amongst the Roma and more recently working amongst Syrian refugees! At the end of 2013, an estimated 15,000 refugees were living in Bulgaria. Nikola Atanasov, one of our partners, has been working with the ‘The National Pentecostal Ministry for Outreach and Support for Syrian Refugees’, and tells us that 12-15 former Muslim Roma have already been baptised through the work.

Bulgaria’s Roma community is vast and desperately needs “servants who would love

and take care of the people.

Few Bulgarians would commit themselves, their time and strength to serve there but for us this service is a priority.” However, work amongst the Roma has daily challenges: 1. Lack of perseverance among Roma.

2. Illiteracy: About 1% of Roma graduate university.

3. Occultism: Many Roma women tell fortunes and deal in witchcraft; almost all do that for a living.

4. Remaining unmarried: Historically, few Roma couples would decide to marry legally. The same is true today, even in church.

However, God is moving and couples in church are

repenting for the past and getting married.

5. Racial discrimination: Between Bulgarians and Roma but also vice versa.

Discrimination plays a shamefully heavy role in political parties’ greed for power.

The end of July saw Bulgaria’s Prime Minister, Plamen Oresharskil, resign, leaving Bulgaria with no government and a dismissed Parliament.

What’s going on in...

...Romania

C

ushioned by five European countries, Romania suffered huge oppression under Communism and is still struggling to find their feet.

Despite being a land rich in agriculture, many farms are left abandoned as people cross borders in search for employment.

With three partners based in Oradea, TEN has been involved with work in Northern Romania for many years. The Emanuel University and CASA Grace have been key organisations for decades, with the Emanuel Hospice becoming a partner when it moved out of CASA to become its own entity.

With their recent move across to Briana, CASA is re-settling into routine once more and continues to be a thunderstorm agency for social action. Between April 2013–14, CASA reached the lives of 978 people with their many services. Of that figure, a whopping 162 students graduated CASA’s vocational training centre!

With a small but highly devoted team of 11, CASA is striving to transform their community for the Kingdom and doing amazing works.

Likewise, the Emanuel Hospice helps the most vulnerable in Oradea in often heart-wrenching circumstances. Recently, the building works have

restarted on the new inpatient building and the hospice is eager to employ a chaplain and two new nurses at this time. With a grounded foundation in training, the hospice has built a respectful reputation of providing the best care possible.

Still heavily Orthodox, Oradea has a reluctance to adopt or accept the evangelical faith. TEN are so proud to be partnered with our contacts in Oradea because everything they do is to proclaim God’s saving grace on individual’s lives despite circumstances, finances, belief, etc. Please pray for our partners—for strength to face each day and to know God’s love in order to give it!
