With the obstacles we’ve overcome the last few years, people are rediscovering the importance of supporting our local economy, downtowns, and main streets. Luckily, the wide variety of independently owned restaurants, shops, and services in the Spring Garden and Downtown Halifax area certainly sets the perfect atmosphere for shopping local this holiday season.
With this in mind, we’ve laid the groundwork for your “ultimate holiday shopping experience” with our 2022 Holiday Gift Guide. In these pages, over 90 shops, restaurants and attractions are showcased from around Downtown Halifax and the Spring Garden area.
Although most businesses have online stores, there’s nothing like coming Downtown to shop, dine, and experience the holiday ambience in person. DELIGHTFUL DOWNTOWN is back, and it includes light installations at various parks throughout Downtown and the ever-popular light shows being projected on the former Halifax Memorial Library at Grafton Park. Also back this year is the Evergreen Festival, the Holiday Projection Show on City Hall, and Shopping Under the Stars is celebrating its 33rd year with a street party on Spring Garden Road.

Whether it’s a shopping trip with friends, a festive date night on the town or a family outing to watch the SaltWire Holiday Parade of Lights, Downtown Halifax has always been a destination for holiday cheer. With more festive winter activities and events than ever before, it’s time to start planning your annual traditions and looking into what new ones you can make along the way.
A series of vivid light shows and installations, DELIGHTFUL DOWNTOWN came together as a way for Downtown Halifax Business Commission (DHBC) to encourage people to come Downtown and stay to shop, eat, wander and enjoy. Local business owners have struggled with lockdowns, restrictions, and changing consumer behaviours over the past few years, and DHBC wanted to offer something you can’t get anywhere else in the city.
The beautiful light shows project onto the former Halifax Memorial Public Library at Grafton Park, along with light installations at Peace and Friendship Park, Granville Mall, Bedford Row, and new this year, Raymond Taavel Park.
“As the days get shorter, we know that lights can really brighten someone’s experience Downtown. The lights we’ve added to Peace and Friendship Park are ones that are enjoyed by hotel guests, residents, and all users of that park,” says Paul MacKinnon, CEO of DHBC. “The projection shows on the old library were originally meant to add some cheer and an opportunity for outdoor gatherings during the COVID-19 restrictions. But they have proven to be popular and also educational, as they focus on seasonal and cultural themes.”
Be sure to make the light shows and installations part of your Downtown outings this season. While the light projection shows at Grafton Park run until March 2023, the Holiday Show will run to December 26th, followed by the New Year’s Show running from December 30th to January 2nd, and the Winter Show will run alongside these other shows until January 31st.
“Holiday shopping Downtown provides a full and more relaxing experience. You can browse small, local shops, have some food and drink, see a show, enjoy the lights, and more,” says MacKinnon. “There are just so many options for a night out, to gather with family or friends. It’s just not the holidays without a visit Downtown!”
The third annual Evergreen Festival kicks off on November 25th and runs to December 18th. This free outdoor winter celebration, presented by Develop Nova Scotia in partnership with Discover Halifax, focuses on Nova Scotia culture, food, spirits, craft, arts and other memorable experiences. The focal point of Evergreen is the Halifax Waterfront, where the open-air holiday market is located. Peruse kiosks run by local retailers, distilleries, and wineries, plus discover delicious pop-up food vendors. Existing Waterfront businesses like Beavertails, Waterfront Pizza & Wraps and The Beer Garden (BG) will also be open for most of the festival. The Waterfront will host the live music stage, with programming by JazzEast Rising, the same team that runs Halifax Jazz Festival. The entertainment area will have propane fire tables and picnic table pods.
“Evergreen Festival brings together so many local businesses, vendors, suppliers, crafters, musicians and entertainers from all across Nova Scotia,” says Jenna Rideout, Manager of Marketing and Events at Develop Nova Scotia. “The light displays, outdoor movie screenings and stage performances are all completely free to enjoy. It’s such a special way to spend a day or evening celebrating the holidays with family and friends.”
In addition to the market and entertainment stage, Evergreen Bright is a series of light displays and installations along the Waterfront (including the DELIGHTFUL DOWNTOWN locations). And, don’t forget to follow the Evergreen Cocoa Trail to find out who’s serving up holiday hot chocolate over the course of the festival.

The Spring Garden Area Business Association (SGABA) is celebrating its 33rd holiday season holding Shopping Under the Stars. This year, the organization is elevating the long-standing event by hosting Shopping Under the Stars along with The Spring Garden Holiday Market, plus giving the street a festive makeover.
“Since I began in 2019, we’ve tried to add to the street and create a holiday feel on Spring Garden. For our 33rd year, we plan to go big and really give the street a Hallmark Holiday makeover”, says SGABA Executive Director Sue Uteck.
Shopping Under the Stars is an annual nighttime event focused on retail shops, services and restaurants in the Spring Garden Road area. Local businesses offer in-store promotions, discounts, treats and other incentives, while many parking lots in the area offer free parking.
This year the event will be held on two dates: Friday, November 25th and Friday, December 2nd. On November 25th, the event will run from 4 to 9 p.m., while on December 2nd, the Association is creating a pedestrian-friendly shopping experience from South Park to Queen Street called the Spring Garden Holiday Market. There will be hot chocolate stations, carollers, holiday displays for photo opportunities, live performances by inesS® Circus and warming stations. The Spring Garden Holiday Market will run from 2 to 8 p.m. and will feature over 20 locally-owned businesses, crafters and more, for those who prefer to shop during daytime hours.

Shopping Under the Stars showcases 175 of the Spring Garden Area’s more than 350 retailers, restaurants and services, along with a few in the Downtown Halifax area. Though holidays in the Spring Garden area have evolved over the years, the goal of SGABA remains the same: show holiday shoppers that the Spring Garden area is the premier shopping district in Halifax.
