THE ORAL CONTRACEPTIVE PILL

(OCP) BY DR KAREN SOFFE.

Crisis pregnancies are traumatic and can be avoided by contraception. The most commonly used is the “Pill” or OCP. If the pill is taken properly it is over 99% effective. This compares with only 60% for the “Morning After Pill” The OCP contains oestrogen and progesterone and works by:

• stopping the ovaries from releasing an egg

• thickening the mucous in your cervix, making it difficult for sperm to move through it

• making the lining of your womb thinner preventing implantation

Most pill packets contain 21 pills - Take it at the same time each day for 21 days. Then stop for seven days during which you get a withdrawal bleed (period). Start the next pack on the eighth day, whether you are still bleeding or not.

The pill does not protect against sexually transmitted disease(STDs) and young women who are in a new relationship may consider using condoms as well as the pill to protect herself against STDs.

What things may make your Pill less effective?

• Other medications you are prescribed (e.g. some antibiotics or epilepsy drugs)

• Severe Diarrhoea or Vomiting

• More that 12 hours later taking you pill

• Starting the next packet late

If any or the above happen, you may have to take “extra precautions” i.e. abstaining from intercourse or using a condom for the next 7 days.

Some things make the OCP unsafe to use include:

• smoking (or having stopped smoking less than one year ago) and are 35 or older

• smoking >15 cigarettes a day at any age

• being very overweight

• certain medications

• injury or if you are due to have surgery

• a thrombosis (blood clot) in your or a family member

• heart, circulatory or liver disease

• raised blood pressure (hypertension) including during a previous pregnancy

• migraines especially with aura

• breast cancer

• diabetes

These may mean that you cannot use the OCP. There are other options still available such as the mini pill, implants (“the bar”), the coil (IUD), natural methods, barrier methods (e.g. condoms), sterilization, etc. If you are sexually active and do not wish to get pregnant, talk to you GP today about your contraception options.

Ready Set Go… To The Expo

As nearly 140 exhibitors prepare for this year’s Kerry EXPO, it promises to be bigger than ever! Many exhibitors are designing their marketing activities, creating advertising campaigns and listing their offerings for this mega event of the year. While larger companies aim to develop their Employee Brand, they also take the opportunity to engage in a one day event that brings together the broader business and local community.

According to the Liz Maher “The EXPO creates a space where companies can turn an influx of visitors and into evangelists for their brand and indeed for Kerry. The idea is simple “Kerry residents promoting and supporting Kerry based companies”. We hope that everyone will come out and support the event on May 13th and as part of celebrating business with the people who live, work and study here. We

have scheduled a whole host of family entertainment, so there’s something for everyone and for all ages to enjoy. It’s important to remember that as well as using local services or purchasing local products, it’s equally important for Kerry residents to have a positive understanding of the wealth of amazing companies, organisations and institutions that operate throughout the county. This event also sets out to attract and lure additional industry and potential career changers across the county bounds, by positioning Kerry as one of the best places to live and work. We truly believe that this is a fundamental ingredient to drive growth and develop a healthy local economy for our future”.

This year we are encouraging exhibitors to roll out the red carpet, ramp up targeted social media campaigns and launch special promotions that give expo visitors a reason to sample their products or take an interest in the services they

offer. It is important that exhibitors should build wordof-mouth and social media buzz among first-time customers and expo visitors and in-turn create memorable experiences”, says Elin Sorensen of GHQ Design. Organisers say that a number of firms are focusing their attention on creating a corporate culture where employees become more engaged with the corporate brand and in turn develop a greater pride of workplace. Fred McDonogh, Director of Redchair Recruitment stated that “Business/Community events such as the Kerry EXPO can in fact bring employees together in a different light, where they get to know one another better when interacting outside of the workplace”.

We ask residents across Kerry to visit the EXPO and support the growth of our county. Entrance to the event is FREE of CHARGE. In addition there will be lots of free fun and entertainment. Special bus services are available from various parts of the county to the INEC in Killarney on May 13th. There will be park and ride facilities around the INEC and bus routes and schedules are available on kerryexpo.ie.

Tralee aims to be Ireland’s Greenest Town

TRALEE has a new Environment Task Force as part of the Tralee Chamber Alliance Town Team and its main short-term goal is to make Kerry’s Capital the Greenest Town in Ireland. GLAN Tralee, the first project to be undertaken by the Environment Task Force, is a community movement supported by Tralee Chamber Alliance and An Taisce designed to foster a cleaner, greener and more environmentally sustainable town.

GLAN is the Irish word for Clean and GLAN also stands for: Green Local Area Network.

The Chairperson of Tralee Chamber Alliance’s Town Team, Brian Stephenson, said: “Tralee is the capital of Kerry – a county known worldwide as a place of immense beauty – and the capital town should lead the way. Organisations in

Tralee including businesses, clubs, schools and public bodies will be asked to make ‘green and clean’ commitments. These will include participating in regular clean-ups, taking responsibility for the upkeep of an area in town, moving away from single use plastic, implementing waste reduction practices and considering more sustainable energy sources.”

Over the coming months, individuals will be encouraged to get involved by becoming GLAN Ambassadors, responsible for promoting good environmental practices in their own network.

Tralee has made great strides in a range of areas in recent years from winning the award for being Ireland’s Best Large Tourism in 2015 to the overall title as Ireland’s Most Enterprising Town in 2017.

The town has won six Tidy Towns Gold Medals in-a-row,

the prestigious Entente Florale Gold Medal, the Purple Flag for having a safe, vibrant and well-managed Night Time Economy and three Blue Flag Beaches within a 15 minute drive.

“The global workforce is increasingly mobile which means people and companies can set-up and work almost anywhere in the world.

Developing Tralee as a Green

Town will generate jobs and inward investment and will be good for our environment, health and well-being, tourism and the local economy,” said Brian Stephenson Tralee and Dingle are the first towns in Ireland to roll out GLAN. Organizations and individuals can get involved by going to www.tralee.ie/Glan.

Siamsa.. 50 Years of Traditional Irish Performances

Final rehearsals are underway by Siamsa Tíre – the National Folk Theatre of Ireland as it celebrates 50 years of performing original traditional Irish music, song and dance

The cast of Siamsa Tíre, the National Folk Theatre of Ireland are in final rehearsals for the 50th anniversary of its first performance of Fadó Fadó – its’ first folk production of authentic traditional Irish music, song and dance that portrays rural life in Ireland long ago. The cast for this year’s summer season of performances will reach over 100 performers comprising of multi-talented dancers, singers and musicians working across five different productions for national and international audiences. The new season opens on Tuesday May 8th and runs through to Thursday 20th September 2018. The first performance took

place in 1968 in Balloonagh School Tralee, Co Kerry by Siamsóirí na Ríochta as it was then known, and they went on to perform in a variety of venues in Ireland and abroad, as well as performing on national radio and television.

In 1974, Siamsa Tíre, the National Folk Theatre (NFT) of Ireland was then established as a professional theatre company and has expanded over the years through its’ Training Academies. The founding of Siamsa Tíre, the National Folk Theatre of Ireland, was motivated by a desire to preserve and showcase Ireland’s great wealth of music, song, dance and folklore on stage through vibrant, colourful theatrical entertainment and continue to create new folk theatre productions, drawing on our traditions and rich cultural reservoir.

Balloonagh students

experience the Gaeltacht !

For this season, Siamsa Tíre will offer a choice of five productions including one brand new show developed to celebrate this special anniversary. All productions are presented through the unique Siamsa style of Irish music, song and dance,

Scoil Eoin Balloonagh pupils returned to their classes on Friday after a thoroughly enjoyable trip to the Gaeltacht in Ventry.

During this school year, fourth class pupils in the school have taken part in an exciting new initiative called Gaeilge Bheo, designed and delivered by Sinéad Curtin. Each child has spent six weeks improving their oral Irish through a series of role play activities and a variety of language and communicative games.

Feedback from parents and pupils has been overwhelmingly positive, with children reporting “we can have fun ‘as gaeilge’,”.

The programme culminated this week in a trip to the Gaeltacht for 57 children and 5 members of the school staff. The children were treated to Corcha Duibhne hospitality and were welcomed into Ventry homes where they were immersed in Gaeilge. They enjoyed sightseeing trips, céilís, classes and activities, all through Irish. No doubt they will have fond memories of their first trip to the Gaeltacht for life. It was a wonderful trip to mark Bliain na Gaeilge. Áthas orthu go léir bheith gaelach agus bródúil.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: FREE CANCER SCREENING PROGRAMMES

Question

My friend has been offered free screening for cancer. She says it’s a national free screening programme. How can I take part?

Answer

The National Cancer Screening Service provides free screening programmes to help detect or prevent several types of cancer.

BowelScreen – The National Bowel Screening Programme aims to detect bowel cancer at an early stage in people who have no symptoms. It offers free screening every two years to men and women aged 60 to 69. If you are in this age group, you can ring BowelScreen on Freephone 1800 45 45 55 to check your details are on the register. If you are on the register, you will receive an invitation to take part in the BowelScreen programme.

CervicalCheck – The National Cervical Screening Programme tests women aged 25 to 60 for changes in the cells of the cervix. Early detection and treatment can prevent cervical cancer. If you are aged between 25 and 60 and have never had a CervicalCheck smear test, you can simply make an appointment with a GP practice or clinic registered with CervicalCheck. You can find one in your area by visiting cervicalcheck.ie or by calling Freephone 1800 45 45 55. A letter of invitation is not needed to make an appointment and attend for a first test.

BreastCheck – The National Breast Screening Programme invites women to a free mammogram (x-ray of the breast) every two years. SERA HUSKEY ANIMAL

RESCUE OPEN DAY JUST GETS BIGGER AND BIGGER!!!

What is Sera Huskey?

“Raising a regular amount of money is obviously vital to many organisations just to keep going - for Sera Husky & Animal Rescue it is essential. With no Government Funding 100% of all funds raised keeps the Rescue Open and lets us do what we do best –Sera Husky & Animal Rescue is organised, managed & run by volunteers. We rescue and rehome but we also have a number of animals who will live at the Rescue - they receive the medical care & love they need and will live out their days with dignity - It is their home.

2018 has been are busiest year for abandoned dogs & animals – often with a medical condition that can be treated – for example there is “JR” ,he’ s such a great little guy but he had some problems so we decided to go ahead a get him sorted. He had testicular cancer, x-rays were done and he doesn’t seem to have any obvious spread. He also had a hernia which had come through the muscle in the side which is unusual - so that was repaired. He also had a rotten tooth removed and lastly a little tumour was removed from his eyelid. He is deaf and his eyesight might not be great but he has lots of life left in him and he still likes to play with some of the dogs like Trudy, Nessa, Jesse, (note: he’s a bit of a ladies man!)

And we have had many many more –But this costs money. To be as proactive & self funding as possible we have a Charity Shop in Tralee but that only raises a certain amount of money and with all these extra Abandoned Dogs & Animals we are pushing our veterinary & feed bills to the limit. Thats why our Annual open Day is so important to us ...it allows us showcase what we do to the public , show off our beautiful animals as well as being a vital fundraiser for us . Each year the turnout has doubled since we started so fingers crossed for Sunday week, May 13th !

Can I Watch my Sky Q box on two TVs ?

Sky Q is a great box.... you can record up two 4 programs at the one time and watch another. But what if you want to watch Sky Q in another room and you don’t want to pay for an extra box. Good news here .... there is a device that you can connect to your sky Q box to give you that option, which will let you watch the same channel that is on in the main Television...in, lets say, the bedroom . I have Installed Technomate HD RF Modulator, which sends the signal in full HD Modulator. for some of my customers and it work very well and you can change channels in the second room.

Sky changesaround its channels !

If you are struggling to locate your favourite show on Sky because its EPG has been reshuffled, you are in good company as other people are venting their frustrations on Twitter. The broadcaster has made some changes to the way it lists the channels in the TV Guide "to help improve your viewing experience", according to Sky.com. EPG changes happened automatically on May 1, which the broadcaster informed subscribers of in advance. Documentary channels have moved higher in the TV Guide, while +1 channels have moved into a new section. As well as changes to other areas of the TV Guide, duplicate HD/SD channels have moved to a new section. I suppose it will take time to adjust to these changes.

Bexblah Beauty

HELLO BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE!

I HOPE YOU’RE HAVING AN AMAZING

WEEK!

A few weeks ago I attended the amazing Makeup By Mario Masterclass with Keilidh Cashell (@keilidhmua) & Cloud 10 Beauty.

This week I’m going to talk about some top tips I learned from Mario including some of his must have products.

• He doesn’t use particular products on different skin types, he “manipulates the skin” to do what he wants. - I know, I was shocked too. What I mean by that is, he uses the SAME moisturiser on EVERY CLIENT to prep the skin. Wanna know what moisturiser that is? The Kiehls Ultra Facial Cream. (I’m not gonna lie I was delighted it was a product I already use and love). Like Kiehls is not an insanely priced product, a jar of that moisturiser will set you back about €25.

• He is obsessed with The Beauty Blender. A man after my own heart. If you follow me at all you know The Beauty Blender is one of my essential ride or die tools. I always use “The Original Beauty Blender”, no dupes. And you ALWAYS have to use it damp. Mario uses three different beauty blenders in his application, one for Foundation, one for Concealer & one for Powder.

• He always finishes with a Setting Spray.- Mario is a big fan of using powders such as the Laura Mercier Translucent & the Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Finish Powder. He bakes and sets with both of them (using a damp Beauty Blender of course). He always uses a Setting Spray over the powders to get rid of that powdery finish on the skin.

Here’s a few products Mario used throughout the Masterclass…

• Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz

• Laura Mercier Translucent Powder

• Laura Mercier Flawless Fusion Concealer

• The Original Beauty Blender

• Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Finish Powder

• Makeup By Mario X KKW Eyeshadow Palette

• Dermablend Concealers

• Tom Ford Foundation

• Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream

• Kiehls Ultra Facial Cream

• Ardell Wispies

BEXBLAHFITNESS!

I’m sadly gone from Titan Fitness Thailand & have arrived in Sydney (one week today!) This week I’m going to be talking about my final thoughts of Titan Fitness Camp.

• ANYONE CAN GO Since going to Thailand and talking about it here & online, I have got SOmany questions! The most popular is “Is Titan suitable for me, I’m not fit?”... YES. Absolutely anyone can go to Titan, no matter what your fitness level or age. I found that Titan had a great mixture of people who had never set foot in a gym, people wanting to change their entire lifestyle, people who were fitness fanatics and people who fell somewhere in between. There is no sense of “competition” & more a sense of community.

• YOU CAN GO ALONE Another question I got a lot was “can I go alone?”... 10000000%! About 90% of the people I met in Titan were all solo traveling. Everyone is in the same boat and more than happy to make new friends.

• IT’S SO SOCIAL One of the things I loved about Titan is the social aspect of it. Within a few hours of arriving I met two girls who added me into the Titan Facebook Group on messenger, a place where people would post if anyone wanted to go for dinner, to the beach, for a hike or whatever else. From talking to some people who had done other fitness camps I heard that Titan was definitely the most social and friendly one they had been to!

• YOU CAN BE AS STRICT AS YOU WANT Yes you are at a fitness camp, but it’s up to you what you want to get out of it. If you want a total lifestyle change you can get a PT 6 days a week and follow a meal plan that they give you. You can attend as many classes as you wish and go to the gym at anytime. On the other hand you can also take things at your ease, you can do one or two classes a day, sunbathe/explore Phuket & sample some of the amazing local food. It all depends what you are there for.

• THE TRAINERS ARE GREAT At Titan, every single trainer I met was incredibly friendly and helpful. There is no feeling of a divide between you and the trainers, it really made me feel like I could ask them anything!

• YOU CAN DO YOUR OWN THING/AT YOUR OWN PACE As I said above it’s all about what you want to get from Titan. But you won’t for a second feel you’re out of your depth or that it’s a competition and everyone is better/fitter/stronger than you. It’s not that kind of place, everyone is SO encouraging. And there’s something for everyone, from CrossFit to Yoga and everything in between.

So yeah, to sum it all up in one sentence… If I had been going home after Titan and not to Australia, I would have DEFINITELY extended my stay in Titan! The Donal Walsh Spa 6K Challenge 2018

There was a real buzz of excitement and anticipation at Spa N.S. this week as the 2018 ‘Donal Walsh Spa 6K Challenge’ was launched. This will be the fifth year of the event and the whole school community is busy organising an amzing family fun day in honour of Donal, their past pupil on Sunday May 20th. “We want to yet again honour Donal in a special way and so the committee is working to create an event where people of all ages and fitness levels can come together for a few hours, have fun and ‘live life’ just as Donal urged us all to.” said school principal Peter Linehan. “Huge credit must go to our Parents Association who have been working tirelessly over the past few weeks to ensure that everything will be ready”, added Peter.

The school will certainly be a hive of activity with a fabulous farmers market in operation and children from 5th and 6th classes coordinating fun games and challenges for young and old all day. The Parents Association is organising a beautiful barbeque on site. Teas and tasty treats will be served on the day. There will be a water rocket display and the ‘Amazing Guido’ well known street entertainer, will host his lively show to entertain everyone.

However, the main event of the day will be the ‘Spa 6K Challenge’ a 6km looped run/walk starting and finishing at the school. Donal’s mum and dad, Elma & Fionbarr Walsh will yet again officially start the run/walk at 11.30 a.m. “It means so much to us to see Donal’s primary school organising this very unique day in his memory and we are delighted to support them in it.” said Fionbarr.

Everyone is welcome to come along, join the party and register from 10.00a.m. on the morning, but they can also pre register (for reduced entry fees) at the school. Please call 066 7136618, e mail spaschool@eircom.net for full details or check it out on facebook @ the Donal Walsh Spa Challenge!

TORQUING CARS!

SCARCITY OF ‘CLEAN’ SECOND-HAND DIESELS COULD BOLSTER FUTURE VALUE OF TRADE-INS

The fall in new diesel car buying could have a positive impact on the value of used vehicles over the coming years, it is claimed. The relative scarcity of cleaner, fresh diesels, as opposed to many older imports, should underpin good second-hand prices, according to Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) chief Alan Nolan. His expectations will go some way towards easing concerns for thousands who are driving a diesel or thinking of buying a new one this year or next.He said: “We remain confident that such new and nearly-new diesel used cars will continue to hold good values, as diesel remains the workhorse for business and those in rural Ireland.””The reduction we have seen in the diesel share of the new car market may potentially leave these in shorter supply for those buyers for whom they are the best transport and environmental option at present, which you would expect to have a positive upward pressure in relation to future values”.He also emphasised that good trade-in prices generally are vital to keep people in new or newer cars and to ease the transition to electric vehicles. He was commenting on a first-quarter report for the motor industry by economist Jim PowerIt shows how new diesel registrations accounted for 56.3pc of the market in the first quarter, down from 66.7pc on the corresponding period for 2017.New petrol car registrations rose to 37.5pc of the total market, an increase from 29.6pc, over the same timespan.Mr Power is forecasting 120,000 new car sales for this year, down 8.6pc on 2017.But used car imports, the majority of them often older, dirty diesels, could reach 107,000 (up 15pc).There are fears within the industry that new car registrations may not even reach 120,000 and that imports could top 110,000, leaving a narrow gap between the two and showing how much the UK cars are dictating buying decisions here.

Mr Power’s report said: “Looking forward to the remainder of 2018, the other economic fundamentals that underpin new car registrations look set to remain positive.”Used imports from the UK, though, are likely to remain a significant feature of the market and will undoubtedly displace new-car sales once again.”The surge in used imports from the UK effectively means that UK used car values are directly impacting on the values of domestic second-hand car stock.”This is making the cost of change to a new car more expensive, which is also serving to undermine new car sales.

MOTORING SNIPPETS

Here’s a helpful piece of advice from a reader: “My wife drives a Skoda Octavia that is just past its third birthday. Thus its Skoda Assist has expired. “The car is very reliable but I feared punctures on the terrible rural roads. I wanted to continue with some form of recovery assistance or puncture assistance. “I contacted Skoda Assist. I was told that as I did not have our car serviced by a main Skoda dealer in the past 12 months, I would not have Skoda Assist. People should know this.

I contacted my insurance company (Allianz). Better news here: As I have a comprehensive policy I have free recovery assistance. I think it is important [for people to know ] in rural Ireland, with poor roads.” * Toyota’s FaceItDown app has passed the 12m kilometre mark - that’s how far people have driven without mobile phone use. The figure was logged with the app (in association with the RSA). It is reckoned to be similar to driving around our coast 3,799 times.

As you probably know, the FaceItDown app rewards drivers for putting their phone face-down when driving. They get points every kilometre towards a free hot drink at Topaz ReStore or €50 off FBD Car Insurance, but you lose the lot if you pick up while driving.

Now they are renewing their call from the start of National FaceItDown Awareness Week today for people to put their phones face-down. Research shows those with a mobile phone at the wheel are four times more likely to crash. The app has been downloaded more than 42,000 times, and 14,602 hot drinks have been redeemed in the nine months since it started.

* Volvo Cars Ireland’s great beach clean-up has begun. The idea, in partnership with Clean Coasts, was for Volvo Cars staff to collect as much rubbish, including plastic, from the Shelly Banks beach near Sandymount over the course of a morning. It was to help raise awareness and tackle the growing issue of marine plastic pollution.

* Lexus has rolled out a new service facility. Called LexusService.ie, it gives owners a quick, accurate quote for their vehicles as well as booking a service online or through their retailer or authorised repairer. You just enter your registration number, select the work needed and you are given a free quote.

* Audi’s upcoming e-tron electric SUV will be capable of 400kms on one charge, they claim. Due to be revealed in August, it will be powered by two motors using a 95kWh lithium ion battery. They are claiming a world-first on their 150kWh DC fastcharging system, which they say is 30kW quicker than Tesla’s.

LAUGHTER ....THE BEST MEDICINE !

AN AMISH GIRL AND HER MOTHER WERE VISITING A MALL AND THEY WERE ESPECIALLY AMAZED BY TWO SHINY, SILVER WALLS THAT COULD MOVE APART AND BACK TOGETHER AGAIN WITH A ROOM INSIDE.

The girl asked, “Mother, what is this?”

The mother, never having seen an elevator before, responded, “I have no idea.” While the girl and her mother watched with amazement, an old man in a wheelchair rolled up to the moving walls and pressed a button.

After he got in, the walls closed and the numbers counted up and then down. The walls opened up again and a hunky young man stepped out.

The mother, not taking her eyes off the young man, said quietly to her daughter, “Go get your father.”

A DRUNK GOT ON A BUS ONE DAY AND SAT DOWN NEXT TO A PRIEST

The drunk stank of wine, his shirt was stained, his face was all red, and he had a half-empty bottle of wine sticking out of his pocket.

He opened his newspaper and started reading. A couple of minutes later, he asked the priest, “Father, what causes arthritis?”

The priest replied, “Mister, it’s caused by loose living, being with cheap, wicked women, too much alcohol, and contempt for your fellow man.”

“Imagine that,” the drunk muttered. He returned to reading his paper.

The priest, thinking about what he had said, turned to the man and apologised. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to come on so strong. How long have you had arthritis?”

“I don’t have arthritis, Father,” the drunk said, “but I just read in the paper that the Pope does.”

THREE BLONDS ARE OUT WALKING IN THE FOREST WHEN THEY COME ACROSS A SET OF TRACKS

“Oh no... they are definitely bear tracks!”said the third. They were still arguing when the train hit them.

A MAN WAS CAUGHT BY A COP WITH DRUGS IN THE BATHROOM

The man says, “I swear, it’s not mine! I found it here and tried to flush it down the toilet, but every time I flush the drugs down it magically reappears in my hand!”

“I don’t believe you,” says the cop. “Show me.”

The man tosses the bag of drugs into the toilet, then flushes it. The bag swishes down. The cop then stares at the man’s empty hand as the bag is flushed down. “Well,” says the cop, “where are the drugs now?”

“What drugs?”

ONCE UPON A TIME, A POWERFUL EMPEROR

of the Rising Sun advertised for a new Chief Samurai. After a year, only three applied for the job. A Japanese Samurai, a Chinese Samurai and a Jewish Samurai. “Demonstrate your skills!” commanded the Emperor. The Japanese Samurai stepped forward, opened a tiny box and released a fly. He drew his sword and SWISH!, the fly fell to the floor, neatly divided in two. What a feat! exclaimed the Emperor. Number two Samurai, show me what you can do. The Chinese Samurai smiled confidently, stepped forward and opened a tiny box releasing a fly. He drew his sword and SWISH!SWISH, the fly fell to the floor, neatly quartered.

“That is skill,” nodded the Emperor. “How are you going to top that, Number Three?” The Jewish Samurai, Obi-wan-Cohen stepped forward, opened a tiny box releasing one fly, drew his sword and SWOOOOOOOOOOSH, flourished his sword so mightily that a gust of wind blew through the room, but the fly was still buzzing around.

In disappointment, the Emperor said, “What kind of skill is that? The fly is not dead!” “Dead,” replied the Jewish Samurai. “Dead is easy ~ but circumcised?”

MR PRICE TAKES OVER GARVEY’S!

Now before anyone panic’s this is not about the retail business but the basketball business. The Mr Price is the vastly experienced Pat Price and of course Garvey’s are the sponsors of the Tralee Warriors.

Price is well known to Kerry basketball fans having played against the Tigers on many occasions. And the US native who now lives in Kinsale has won the SuperLeague with Demons in Cork as well as a number of National Cup and also coached the Irish u16 teams.

He replaces Mark Bernsen who led the Warriors to back to back Champions trophy wins and was thanked for all his work at the press night when Price was introduced as the new coach. Speaking to him Price said that the Tralee organisation was an important reason why he decided to take the hot seat. “Great credit goes to all involved with Garvey’s Tralee Warriors as it’s a club that is certainly doing things the right way. One always wants to be where it matters and I am delighted to come on board and lead them to even greater success”.

“Mark did a great job and I certainly don’t have to come in to clean up any mess. We will work hard in preseason to be ready for the challenge. It will be important for this team to find their own identity. Last year’s team cant win anything for me. It’s about working with this bunch of players to take them to the highest level they can be. We will work on a system of play that suits us. Basketball is essentially a game of passing and of timing and in defence of disrupting. I like my training sessions to have a teaching element to them. I want them to improve every week. We can’t be having the same conversation in January that we had in October. We want to get better each time we train or play.”

“Players win games coaches can only lose them. So it is great to be appointed this early as we can get in a proper pre-season and be ready for October.” He said he wasn’t sure if the Warriors would be adding to their squad and he still has to finalise his assistant coach

On welcoming Price to the Warriors club chairman Terry O’Brien said that this was an exciting time for the club. “Pat is a fantastic addition to our club as he

has a marvellous pedigree in the sport. He has coached some great teams in the past and will hopefully be coaching an even great one this season”!

“Garvey’s Tralee Warriors is one of the best supported clubs in the SuperLeague and we will give them lots to shout about both home and away. We feel we have our man and we have the players and both will begin working together to bring more silver wear to our trophy cabinet. ”

MERCY MOUNTHAWK JUST COME UP SHORT IN BID FOR ALL IRELAND GLORY:

Mercy Mounthawk first year basketball team made a great bid for All Ireland glory reaching the Schools League decider in UL. They defeated teams from Cork, Wicklow, Antrim, Dublin and Cavan before they took on the Presentation Brothers Cork in the final.

The Tralee boys led 19-16 at half time but the Cork school put in a big 3rd quarter to turn things around and led by 7 going into the last quarter. Mounthawk went into a zone defence and up the intensity on offence and got back level late on. However a late late Cork basket saw the Pres boys take the win 32-30.

Coach John Dowling was very proud of his charges and how they handled 6 games in 2 days. He was disappointed that they lost by just one basket but said that it was a great achievement for the school and the squad to get back to the final which they won last year.

TRALEE SCHOOL SUCCESS AT THE PRIMARY 5-A-SIDE: Mounthawk Park Tralee played host to the Kerry County Final of the SPAR FAI Primary School 5s Programme on April 25th. The ‘C’ Cup, for large schools, was another hard-fought contest between 4 very talented schools. The Mon Killarney eventually came out on top of the large school’s division.

The winners will now progress to the Munster Finals on the 8th and 9th May in Mounthawk Park Tralee.

Participation in the girl’s division of the SPAR FAI Primary Schools 5s Programme reached an all-time high this year with 12,832 4th, 5th and 6th class girls registered.

The winning schools were Kilgarvan NS in the Girls A Cup and Faha in the B Cup while Holycross defeated fellow Killarney school St Oliver’s in the C decider.

The SPAR FAI Primary School 5s Programme competition in its 4th year has been in existence since the mid 1990’s and has 31,728 participants from 1,528 schools involved this year. If Kerry win the Joe McDonagh Cup they will face a play-off with the bottom placed team in the Munster championship to gain promotion to the following year’s Munster championship.
