Curranes National School and Cara Credit Union Cultivate a Greener Future

The students of Curranes National School, Castleisland, embraced nature as they got their hands dirty in the school garden, thanks to Cara Credit Union’s biodiversity initiative. The school was one of five selected for the program, which promotes ecological awareness and hands-on outdoor learning.

Now in its third year, the initiative, run in collaboration with Tralee Bay Wetlands Ecology Park, teaches children the importance of protecting the environment.

School principal, Emer Nelligan, expressed her delight at being chosen: “Children love outdoor learning, and we’re grateful to Cara Credit Union for providing trees, fruit bushes, and expert guidance. This program helps instill ecological awareness and sustainable habits in our students, and we look forward to future harvests.”

Sensory Street and Wheelchair Accessibility for St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Monday 17th This year’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade will once again feature the inclusion

of a Sensory Street - a dedicated route from Ballymullen to Kevin Barry’s Villas. This route is designed to provide a welcoming and inclusive viewing experience where the Parade participants will shine bright with their lights but dim down with their sound.

A viewing area which is wheelchair accessible/friendly will be at the KDYS Denny Street and is accessible from the Brandon Car Park.

Kerry FC Fall to Narrow Defeat Against Bray Wanderers Kerry FC suffered a 0-1 loss to Bray Wanderers at Mounthawk Park on Friday night. The home side, eager for their first-ever league win against Bray, showed resilience but couldn’t find an equaliser.

Bray struck early, with Calum Costello scoring in the second minute following a defensive error.

Kerry responded well, creating several chances, but Bray goalkeeper James Corcoran made crucial saves, denying Luke Palmer, Kevin

Williams, and Chris McQueen. A strong penalty claim for Kerry in the 28th minute was controversially waved away.

The second half continued with Kerry pressing, but Chris McQueen’s goal-bound header was cleared off the line—again with no penalty awarded. Mathyas Randriamamy made his debut, producing a fine save, but Kerry couldn’t break through.

Despite a valiant effort, Kerry FC remains winless since their openingnight victory. They now face back-to-

back away games against Longford and Wexford.

Minister Norma Foley attends tourism event in House of Lords to celebrate St Patrick’s Day 2025 Tourism Ireland co-sponsored a special reception in the House of Lords in London – as part of an extensive programme of St Patrick’s Day 2025 promotional activity in Great Britain and elsewhere around the world. The event, celebrating British-Irish relations, was attended by members of the House of Commons and House of Lords, as well as leaders of the Irish community living in London and influential British travel trade and

media contacts.

St Patrick’s Day offers a unique opportunity for tourism to the island of Ireland. Billy say “Leaving Cert Grades Inflation to Ease in 2025 as CAO Points Drop” Billy Ryle, Kerrys top Career Guidance Counsellor says ¨The post-marking adjustment of Leaving Cert exam scripts is set to gradually decrease, aiming to return to 2019 levels. This adjustment, introduced in 2020 due to COVID-19 disruptions, has led to unsustainable grade inflation over the past five years.

In 2025, the average post-marking adjustment will be reduced to 5.5%, down from 7.5% in recent years.

As a result, Leaving Cert results will be lower, and students will gain an average of 43 CAO points,

compared to 60 points last year.

Last year’s 7.5% adjustment increased 68% of grades, giving students a significant advantage in CAO applications. However, most of those students will have already progressed through college, easing competition for the 2025 class. The addition of promised extra college places should also help level the playing field.

This long-overdue adjustment aims to eliminate the random selection lottery, which has unfairly prevented some students from securing their

preferred courses despite achieving maximum points. It should also help reduce first-year college dropout rates, as inflated grades have sometimes led students into courses they were unprepared for.

Minister Foley Welcomes €1.5 Million in Funding for Kerry Community Centres Minister for Children, Disability, Equality, and Kerry TD, Norma Foley, has welcomed €1.5 million in funding to upgrade community centres across the county.

The funding, provided through the Community Centres Investment Fund, will support upgrades such as lighting and heating improvements, solar panels, insulation, and new facilities.

Minister Foley highlighted the importance of community centres in fostering local connections and wellbeing. “They are at the heart of our communities, and this funding will provide a significant uplift,” she said.

Several centres in the greater Tralee area are set to benefit: • Austin Stacks GAA Community Clubhouse – €32,000 for a multi-purpose room upgrade, accessible toilet lift, heating, and lighting.

• Rahoonane Community Centre – €90,000 to realign the ground floor for improved accessibility.

• Spa GAA Club Community Centre – Over €81,000 for roof repairs, new heating, lighting, and fire doors.

Na Gaeil CLG is the youngest GAA club in Kerry and they cater for over 400 boys & girls playing Gaelic games at various levels. The Club are proud to have representatives on both the Kerry senior men’s team and the Kerry Ladies team.

Running a large successful club is very costly and they depend on fundraisers and the generosity of their sponsors to allow them to improve their playing facilities and remain competitive on the field of play.

On Friday 4th April the Club will be running a Golf Classic at Tralee Golf Club.

takes on reigning All-Ireland champions Armagh in the Allianz Football League. The match is scheduled for a 5:30 PM throw-in at Austin Stack Park .

Fenit Coastal Cycle 2025: Ride for a Cause Celebrating its 12th year, the Fenit Coastal Cycle returns on Saturday, March 22nd, 2025, promising a fun and challenging event for cyclists of all levels.

Participants can choose from 60km, 25km, 10km, and a 1km kiddies’ cycle on the Fenit Greenway. The scenic routes pass through Fenit, Ardfert, Ballyheigue, Kerryhead, and Barrow, offering breathtaking views of Mount Brandon, Tralee, and the Shannon Estuary.

With this result, Warriors will likely finish third or fourth, securing a home quarter-final but facing an away semi-final if they progress.

Despite a strong start with Jokubaitis, Leonard, and Stephens leading the charge, Éanna controlled the second half, stretching their lead to 71-60 by the third quarter. Warriors fought back, but Éanna’s sharp shooting, particularly from Crawford and Andabaka, sealed their victory.

Super League Round 24 Garvey’s Tralee Warriors 98 - Bright St. Vincent’s 83 Warriors ended the regular season on a high, securing their 16th win with a 95-83 victory over Bright St. Vincent’s. A dominant third quarter (32 points) paved the way, with Stephens, Jokubaitis, and Adon leading the charge.

The game saw a serious injury to Cian Sullivan, but Warriors maintained control, with MVP Mark Stephens sealing the win with clutch free throws.

Expanding Special Education: 16 New Classes for Kerry Minister Norma Foley T.D. has welcomed the creation of 16 new special classes in Kerry for the

upcoming school year, providing places for 96 children with special educational needs. These classes, each supporting six pupils, one teacher, and one special needs assistant, will be spread across primary and post-primary schools, including Lissivigeen NS, Listellick Primary, Presentation Secondary (Castleisland & Killorglin), and St. Brendan’s College.

This expansion brings Kerry’s total to 112 special classes. Minister Foley expressed gratitude to local schools and emphasized her dedication to improving access to education.

Nationally, the government is introducing 400 new special classes and 300 additional special school places, supported by 768 new special education teachers and 1,600 special needs assistants. School building and refurbishment projects are also underway to accommodate these expansions.

Minister Foley reaffirmed her commitment to prioritizing special education, working alongside Ministers Helen McEntee and Michael Moynihan to ensure inclusive education for all children.
