First Ever Tralee Fittest Duo
a Huge Success in Blennerville
Blennerville came alive on a bright autumn morning as the first ever Tralee Fittest Duo brought athletes, supporters, and volunteers together for a thrilling community sporting event. The atmosphere was electric as competitors of all levels tackled a gruelling circuit that demanded grit, stamina, and teamwork. The course left no easy moments, with challenges including rowing, cycling, running, tyre flips, burpees, log carries, and lunges. Each stage tested physical strength and mental resilience, while the duo format added a vital layer of partnership and strategy. In the Men’s Advanced division, David Clifford and Kieran O’Shea powered to first place, ahead
of Bobby Byrne and Paddy Moran in second. The Mixed Doubles Intermediate saw Liam and Sharon Poff take the win, with Brendan and Emma Poff second, and Paudi and Jennifer Bailey third. In the Men’s Double Intermediate, Paul Lynch and David Hennebry finished first, followed by Darren McEvoy and Evan Daly. Organised by McEvoy Coaching, Liam Poff, and St Pat’s GAA, the event was a resounding success. With glorious weather, big crowds, and outstanding performances, organisers confirmed Tralee’s Fittest Duo will return in January, and every few months thereafter.

Understanding the Flu
Q: What is the flu?
A: The flu, or influenza, is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can lead to mild to severe illness, and in some cases, serious complications, especially in young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.
Q: How does the flu spread?
A: The flu spreads mainly through droplets made when infected people cough, sneeze, or talk. It can also spread by touching surfaces or objects contaminated with the virus, then touching your mouth, nose, or eyes.
Q: What are the common symptoms?
A: Symptoms usually come on suddenly and include fever, chills, cough, sore throat, muscle aches, fatigue, and headaches. Some people may also experience vomiting or diarrhea, though this is more common in children.
Q: How is the flu different from a cold?
A: While both are respiratory illnesses, the flu tends to be more severe and comes on quickly. Colds are usually milder, with more nasal symptoms like a runny or stuffy nose.
Q: Can the flu be prevented?
A: Yes. The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a yearly flu vaccine. Good hygiene practices, like frequent handwashing and covering your mouth when coughing or sneezing, also help reduce the spread.
Q: What should I do if I get the flu?
A: Rest, drink plenty of fluids, and take over-the-counter medications to ease symptoms. Antibiotics do not work for the Flu or for a Cold as these are viral infections.
Q: When should I see a doctor?
A: Seek medical attention if you experience difficulty breathing, chest pain, severe dehydration, or if symptoms worsen after initially improving.

LEGAL MATTERS CORNER
Saving the Trees
Angela lives in a leafy suburb with many beautiful old trees. She is concerned that the landowners may cut them down for development.
Trees add character, aesthetic and beauty to a neighbourhood.
Trees have many benefits in our environment, producing oxygen for the air we breathe, providing a habitat and food for animals, storing carbon to reduce climate change and they help reduce risk of flooding, soil erosion and water pollution.
If a person fears that an owner may fell a tree that adds to the beauty of an area, they can apply under section 205 of the Planning and Development Act 2000 to ask the local authority to consider making a Tree Preservation Order. If the local authority was to make such a designation the tree must be of such aesthetic merit that it warrants the protection and should be the subject of a Tree Preservation Order. If the local authority does make such a designation this may be appealed by the tree owner to An Bord Pleanala. If a tree does have a Tree Preservation Order made in its favour this prevents the cutting down, topping, lopping or wilful destruction of a tree without the specific consent of the local authority. If a person fells a tree that is the subject of a Tree Preservation Order this is an offence and on summary conviction a person may be liable to a fine of €5000 and/or imprisonment for 6 months. Tree preservation orders can apply to one tree, a group of trees or a woodland. It is a good way of protecting our characterful older trees in an urban area. The County Development Plan would also include objectives to preserve the natural environment including trees and hedgerows.
Section 7 of the Forestry Act 1946 makes it unlawful for pay person to uproot any tree over 10 years old or to cut down any tree unless application has been made to the Gardai of a tree felling notice. However, there are significant exemptions to this including the urban area, or near a road where a danger to the public.
Under the Wildlife legislation the cutting and felling of trees is generally prohibited from 1st March to 31st August. Again, this does have certain exceptions.
The tree council of Ireland keeps a register of trees, and one can apply to put trees on it with GPS location. Many of our special trees in Ireland are on an online database which is growing. www.treecouncil.ie . You can also sponsor a tree on the website and give a certificate of the tree sponsorship to a loved one for a special occasion. They also have a shop online of lovely tree related items which would make lovely Christmas presents.

CHRISTMAS PARTY 2025
Minister Foley Welcomes Extension of Free Travel Companion Pass in Kerry
Minister for Children, Disability, Equality and Kerry T.D Norma Foley has welcomed the extension of the Free Travel companion pass, a move that will benefit over 19,000 people in Kerry.
From 29 September, people aged 70 and over with a valid Free Travel companion Public Services Card can bring another person, aged 16 or older, to travel with them for free on all public transport and certain private services under the Free Travel scheme. This includes bus, rail, Local Link, Luas, and selected private bus and ferry operators.
Nationwide, the expansion is expected to benefit up to 525,000 Free Travel recipients aged 70 and
over, with an estimated cost of €4.1 million this year. In Kerry, this means older residents can enjoy greater independence, security, and companionship while travelling.
Minister Foley said: “This significant expansion ensures that everybody with a valid Free Travel companion card in Kerry can bring another person on their journey. It gives older people freedom of choice and enhances mobility and social inclusion.”
The Free Travel Scheme currently serves over 1.1 million people, rising to 1.9 million when including companion and spousal passes. For more details, visit www.Gov.ie/ FreeTravel.

Kerry Launches Breastfeeding-Friendly Campaign in Tralee
Healthy Kerry, HSE South West, and Kerry County Council are inviting the community to the launch of the ‘We’re Breastfeeding Friendly Kerry’ campaign on Monday, 6 October at 10 am in the Rose Hotel, Tralee. The initiative encourages businesses, organisations, and community spaces to support breastfeeding families.
The morning begins with a formal launch from 10–11 am, featuring talks on creating welcoming environments for mothers and babies. From 11 am–12 pm, Audrey from Giddy Goats will lead a momand-baby play session, offering a light-hearted opportunity for connection. Everyone is welcome, from local café owners to parents seeking support.
The campaign aims to integrate breastfeeding support into daily
life across Kerry. By promoting breastfeeding-friendly policies in shops, restaurants, workplaces, and community centres, it seeks to improve maternal and child health, reduce environmental waste, and foster inclusivity. A simple sticker or friendly nod can transform a routine outing into a confident, stress-free experience for nursing mothers. Local businesses can request a campaign pack, including a best-
practice booklet, an A6 window sticker, and an A3 poster to show support. Kerry’s Public Health Nursing teams already host breastfeeding support groups, and this initiative extends that support into everyday spaces.
Helen Sheehy, Public Health Nurse, explains: “A simple sticker transforms uncertainty into confidence, encouraging longer breastfeeding and showing Kerry values families.”
Healthy Kerry Coordinator Deirdre Hegarty adds: “Embedding support into everyday spaces sends a strong message of inclusivity and care.” To join the movement, attend the launch at the Rose Hotel on 6 October and register at: https://bookwhen.com/ healthpromotiontraining/e/evskj3-20251006100000

powerful soundscape.
Joined by pianist Lorenzo Vitolo and drummer Michael McCarthy, the trio weaves history, culture, and storytelling into an immersive performance that resonates with both heart and mind.
As part of their national tour, the trio brings this unforgettable experience to Kerry: 9 October at The Blasket
Centre and the highlight for local audiences, 10 October at Tobar Naofa, Moyderwell, Tralee. Don’t miss this unique chance to witness a performance that bridges continents, timelines, and musical traditions in a night of history and artistry brought vividly to life.
