TEDxTralee returns to Siamsa Tíre on Saturday, 18th October with a special edition: TEDxTralee Women, themed “Empowering Resilience.” While the programme spotlights women speakers, organisers stress the event is open to all.
TEDx, launched in 2009, is a global movement of independently organised events that mirror the spirit of TED’s “Ideas Worth Spreading.” Talks from local TEDx events often gain global attention, with millions of views on the TEDx YouTube channel, home to over 32 million subscribers.
Curators Bryan Carr and James Finnegan, building on the success of TEDxTralee 2021, 2022 and 2024—whose talks have collectively surpassed four million views— aim to once again put Tralee on the international TEDx stage. Remarkably, TEDxTralee is ranked in the top five percent of TEDx events worldwide.
From 145 applicants, 22 inspiring speakers have been selected
for 2025, representing diverse backgrounds and experiences. Talks will range from deeply personal journeys to global perspectives.
“This is our biggest event yet,” said Bryan and James. “By choosing an all-women speaker lineup, we are amplifying authentic voices and
perspectives that deserve to be heard.”
TEDxTralee also acknowledges the vital support of its partners and thanks past “Speaker Sherpas” mentoring this year’s presenters. To ensure the event’s sustainability, organisers have established a notfor-profit company to support future
programmes.
Delegates can expect a full weekend of “TEDcation” activities in Tralee. Tickets are available for the full day or half-day sessions.
For details and booking, visit www.tedxtralee.ie.

Ingredients
• 1 large onion, roughly chopped
• 2 garlic cloves, crushed
• 3 tbsp medium curry powder*
• ½ tsp ground cinnamon
• 2 x 400g cans chickpeas, drained, reserving the liquid of ½ can
• Large can new potatoes (about 560g), drained and halved or quartered
• 400g can chopped tomatoes
• ½ small pack fresh coriander, finely chopped, plus sprigs to serve
• Plain boiled rice, to serve.
Method
Put the onion and 3 tbsp water in a wide non-stick frying pan that you can put some kind of lid on. Stick it over a medium low heat, cover and cook for 3-4 minutes or until the onion is starting to so en, stirring occasionally. Add the garlic, curry powder and cinnamon and cook for 30 seconds, then stir in the chickpeas, chickpea liquid, potatoes and tomatoes. Bring to the boil over a high heat then reduce the heat to low and simmer for 15 minutes, stirring now and again. Stir most of the chopped coriander through the curry and divide between bowls. Pig’s Lane in Killarney has earned international acclaim, becoming one of the first Irish venues to be recognised by the Pinnacle Guide, often described as the Michelin guide for bars. The venue has been awarded a prestigious ‘1 PIN’ status, signifying excellence.
Announced on 24th September, only 61 bars worldwide made the latest list, with Ireland featuring for the very first time. The guide operates on a 1, 2 and 3 PIN system, with one PIN denoting excellence, two for outstanding venues, and three reserved for truly exceptional
bars. The accolade follows closely on Pig’s Lane’s success at the 2025 Bar of the Year Awards, where it was named Best Designed Bar, took bronze in Cocktail Bar of the Year, and was previously awarded Innovative Bar of the Year. Since its October 2023 launch as Killarney’s first subterranean cocktail bar, Pig’s Lane has built a reputation for creativity and atmosphere. Under the leadership of Gemma Ring and world champion mixologist Ariel Sanecki, the bar serves inventive cocktails, sustainable and vegan wines, locally sourced small plates,
and hosts private whiskey tastings. Regular live music and DJ sets ensure every visit offers something new.
Gemma Ring said the team was “incredibly proud” to be part of Ireland’s debut in the Pinnacle Guide, describing the recognition as “a celebration of our entire team.”
The bar’s name honours the area’s 19th-century history, when the lane once linked College Street to Railway Road.

A major public meeting under the banner “Together, We Are Community” will take place in the Brandon Hotel, Tralee, on Thursday, 2nd October at 7.00 p.m., bringing together community workers, service providers, organisations, and service users from across Kerry to address growing threats to the sector. The meeting aims to highlight the chronic funding uncertainties, erosion of job security, and risks facing vital community services relied upon by thousands. Supports at stake range from after-school programmes
and family resource centres to services for older people, addiction supports, health projects, training schemes, and facilities maintenance.
John Loughrey, campaign coordinator and LEADER Rural Development Officer at NEWKD, stressed that despite the sector’s essential role, “many services remain in limbo due to short-term funding, leaving both staff and communities uncertain about their future.”
Suzanne Griffin, Kerry community activist, said workers are under “immense pressure,” often in
precarious jobs while delivering critical supports to families, young people, and older citizens. “This is a sector under threat but of immense value to society. The time for piecemeal promises is over— communities deserve better.”
The Tralee event marks the first largescale gathering of its kind in Kerry in years and will be the launchpad for a nationwide campaign. Supported by SIPTU, Together, We Are Community calls for real action to secure the stability of jobs, services, and the future of Ireland’s community sector.
Tralee celebrated an exciting milestone last Saturday with the official opening of PadelKerry, a brand-new facility bringing the fast-growing sport of padel to Kerry. Founded by local entrepreneurs Tim Dennehy and David O’Brien, the state-of-the-art courts have already generated buzz among sports enthusiasts eager to try the game. The launch in Tralee was highlighted at a recent Kerry County Council meeting, where Fianna Fáil Councillor Tommy Cahill urged the development of padel courts across the county. “Padel is a fantastic sport—fun, social, and accessible to all ages and abilities,” Cahill said. “Its popularity is exploding worldwide,
and now Kerry has its first dedicated facility.”
Cahill, who has played padel in Dubai, praised Dennehy and O’Brien’s initiative, calling PadelKerry a game-changer for local recreation. He encouraged Kerry County Council to work with Sport Ireland, Padel Ireland, and local clubs to expand the sport county-wide.
“As the youngest councillor in Kerry, I believe modern amenities like padel courts will help attract and retain young families and professionals,” Cahill added. The council will now explore funding and locations to ensure Kerry keeps pace with this growing sport.

Kerry County Council has granted planning permission for a major new housing development in Tralee. KPH Construction will build 245 homes on a site opposite the racecourse in Clash, after a previous proposal for 256 units was rejected by An Bord Pleanála.
The approved scheme includes 163 two-storey houses, a mix of semi-detached and terraced, along with 82 one- and two-bed maisonette/apartment units. The development will feature a new entrance from Clash Road, with the layout set back to allow for a future cycle path.
Changes were made following earlier concerns, including removing first-floor overhanging balconies and adding privacy strips for ground-floor terraces. Over a dozen public submissions raised issues such as traffic capacity, housing density, and limited green space.
Permission has been granted subject to 35 conditions, including a developer contribution of €780,000 for local infrastructure and a full archaeological excavation of a fulacht fiadh discovered on-site.
Kerry Older People’s Council will host its 2025 Information Day and AGM at The Rose Hotel, Tralee, on Friday, 3rd October from 10am to 1pm. Kerry Age Friendly Ambassador Francis Brennan will attend as special guest.
This year’s theme, “Showcasing the Kerry Older People’s Council and Kerry Age Friendly Programme,” highlights the benefits of involvement and the positive impact of age-friendly initiatives across the county.
The Council serves as the voice of Kerry’s older population, influencing local development and policy through the Kerry Age Friendly Programme. People aged 55+ play an essential role in shaping services and supports that enhance life for all generations.
The programme works to make Kerry a place where everyone can remain active, healthy, and connected, enjoying a high quality of life at every stage.
The free event will include information stands from various supports and services for older people. Pre-registration is essential—call the Kerry Age Friendly Office at 066-9796704 to reserve your place.
George Bastible is the founder of MyFitness Kerry (MFK), a community-driven fitness and wellness club based in Fenit. What began as a small idea to help people move more and feel better has grown into a thriving space where locals of all ages can train, connect, and build healthier lifestyles
together.
George started MFK with a simple mission: to make fitness accessible, supportive, and inspiring—without losing the warmth of a small-town feel. From group training and personal coaching to wellness initiatives and community events, MFK is built on the belief that strong individuals create stronger communities.
Beyond the gym walls, George is passionate about supporting local businesses and building meaningful connections across the region. Through collaborations and shared initiatives, he believes in raising the standard for health, wellbeing, and opportunity in Kerry—together.
With a growing team, new locations
and a loyal community, MFK continues to evolve, but George’s focus remains the same: putting people first, creating an environment where everyone feels welcome, and leading with integrity. Whether it’s helping someone take their first step into fitness or
partnering with fellow business owners through Tralee Chamber Alliance, George’s approach is always grounded in humility, care, and a genuine love for seeing people succeed.
Down Syndrome Kerry (DSK) is delighted to confirm the return of its much-loved Honey Days campaign, taking place on Thursday 2nd, Saturday 4th and Friday 18th October across the county. Honey Days is both a fundraiser and an awareness initiative, with locally produced jars of honey available in towns and villages throughout Kerry. Every jar purchased helps sustain DSK’s vital services, which support more than 200 families through speech and language therapy, education programmes, employment opportunities, and community inclusion initiatives. John O’Connor, DSK Chairperson, explained: “Honey Days is about more than raising funds – it’s
about celebrating the talents and contributions of our members, while ensuring we can continue to deliver essential supports across every stage of life.”
Shoppers, schools, workplaces, and local businesses are encouraged to get involved by buying a jar, spreading the word online with #DSKHoneyDays, or volunteering to help with collections.
Funds raised will go directly to DSK programmes, including early intervention therapies, inclusive education, and employment initiatives such as the 321 Charity Shop and Deenagh Lodge Café in Killarney National Park.

Joan Reynolds Cleaning has been a trusted name in Kerry for over 20 years, serving both domestic and commercial clients with an emphasis on reliability and outstanding feedback. Now, Joan is bringing her expertise to the hospitality sector with professional training days aimed at improving cleaning standards across hotels, guesthouses, and B&Bs. We caught up with Joan to discuss her exciting new venture, Professional Training Days for Kerrys Hospitality Sector
Q: Joan, why did you decide to launch professional training days for the hospitality sector?
A: Over the years, I’ve noticed gaps in cleaning standards in some hotels and guesthouses. Spotless rooms and efficient turnover times aren’t just about appearances—they reduce costs and improve guest reviews. I wanted to bring my two decades of knowledge to help teams raise their game.
Q: What makes your training days different?
A: We go beyond basic cleaning. We focus on product knowledge, efficiency, and exposing bad habits—like using artificial scents to mask dirt, which can harm health and reputations. My training is hands-on, practical, and tailored to each business.
Q: When and where are these training sessions happening?
A: We’re starting here in Kerry, Ireland’s tourism capital. Bookings are open now, and training begins in early January. We offer bespoke sessions—whether for individuals or full teams.
Q: How will hotels and guesthouses benefit?
A: A cleaner room turned over faster means happier guests, better reviews, and lower costs. Investing in training now saves headaches later—everything from fewer complaints to more repeat bookings.
Q: How can interested businesses get in touch?
A: It’s easy—just give me a call at 087-4183754. We’ll discuss your needs and create a tailored session. It’s all about making professional cleaning easier and more effective for everyone.
Closing Note
With Kerry’s tourism season always around the corner, Joan Reynolds’ professional cleaning training could be the boost local hospitality businesses need to impress their guests and improve their bottom line.
We pick out some great photos posted on social media each week ...if you have any good ones please send them in... email traleeadvertiser@gmail.com or message us on our Facebook page... Enjoy!

Culture Night 2025 lit up Kerry on Friday, September 19th, offering over 60 free events that showcased the Kingdom’s rich culture and creativity. Coordinated by Kerry County Council’s Arts Office with support from the Arts Council and Creative Ireland, the evening was hailed as “magical” by Councillor Michael Foley, Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council.
In Tralee, the County Museum
and Siamsa Tíre drew crowds with medieval re-enactments, music, crafts, circus performers, African dance, and a lively Quick Step Céilí. Music Generation Kerry’s young musicians and the Kerry School of Music delivered standout performances.

audiences. Listowel impressed with storytelling, Ukrainian performers, and original plays, closing with a lively kitchen concert.

At the Kerry County Museum, visitors were invited to experience a very special evening of openness, discovery, celebration, and belonging. The museum opened its doors after hours, giving the public a rare opportunity to explore its displays as well as areas that are normally closed to visitors. From fascinating exhibitions to hidden spaces, the night offered a unique glimpse into Kerry’s rich history and heritage, making it a memorable occasion for families, history enthusiasts, and curious minds alike.

A new study from Lisbon suggests it may be time to rethink dark-coloured cars. Researchers found that black, grey and dark blue vehicles absorb far more sunlight than lighter shades, quickly heating up and radiating that warmth back into the surrounding air. Unlike asphalt, which warms slowly, a car’s metal body acts like a mobile radiator – especially when painted black.
In Lisbon’s summer sun, air above a parked black car measured almost 3.8°C hotter than the asphalt nearby. White cars, by contrast, sometimes cooled their surroundings slightly. With parked cars covering around 10% of road space in the city, and over 700,000 vehicles on the move daily, dark cars are a significant contributor to the urban heat island effect. The consequences are serious: higher energy bills, more smog, and greater health risks during heatwaves. If you live in a hot climate, experts say choosing a lighter-coloured car could keep both you and your city cooler.

The Performance model sharpens the package further with 21-inch Arachnid wheels, red brake calipers, carbon-fibre spoiler, gloss black exterior details, and upgraded front and rear fascias for high-speed stability. Inside, sports seats with powered thigh extenders and carbon-fibre dash inserts underline its sporting edge.
A new battery pack delivers a range of up to 580km, making it one of the fastest yet most usable electric SUVs on the market. Prices start from €61,990.

KERRY FC
Athlone Town 0-0 Kerry FC
SSE Airtricity First Division – Round 32
Kerry FC battled to a hard-fought draw against Athlone Town on Monday night in their final meeting of the season. After a tough defeat on Friday, Colin Healy made five changes, giving Darragh Foley his first senior start in goal. The first half saw limited chances, with both sides showing defensive strength. Foley made a calm save from Scally’s long-range effort and denied Dean Williams shortly after. Early in the second half, Athlone were awarded a controversial penalty. Foley saved Gilmore’s initial effort—only for it to be retaken. Remarkably, Foley saved again, earning loud praise from the travelling support.
Inspired by Foley’s heroics, Kerry pushed on. Substitutes Okwute, Adams, and Crowe added energy, and late debutant Luke Doolan nearly scored with his first touch. Okwute went closest to scoring in
the 89th minute, hitting the side netting.
Athlone’s Daniel McKenna received a second yellow in stoppage time, but Kerry couldn’t capitalise. The game finished scoreless, with Kerry showing resilience and promise. They return home Friday to face Treaty United in their final Munster Derby of the season.
Kerins O’Rahillys faced Austin Stacks in the Tralee/St Brendans Junior League final in Connolly Park. Despite a stronger secondhalf showing, the Strand Road side were defeated 0-12 to 0-06. Sam McCarthy scored four points (three frees), with Jamie McCarthy and Brayden Pierce also on the scoreboard.
Mid Kerry proved too strong for St Brendans in the Senior County Championship, winning 2-18 to 0-10. Kerins O’Rahillys players involved included Jake Foley, Barry John Keane, and Tomás Kennedy.
St Brendans lost to St Kierans in the Minor Championship final despite leading at half-time. Nick Lacey scored 1-03, including a penalty. A strong second-half comeback by Kierans saw them win 1-16 to 2-07.
Our U6s enjoyed a great blitz vs Ardfert. U8s impressed against Ballymac, and U9s had a standout day at the St. Jude’s Mini All-Ireland, with both teams bringing home silverware. Our Juvenile Academy wraps up with a fun day next week – thank you to all involved!
We’re collecting memories for a club history project. Contact 085 2095001 or email korchronicles@ gmail.com if you can contribute.
