Tralee Rotary Club has secured €52,000 in funding for the Lesotho Market Garden Project, working with Action Lesotho and the Maseru Rotary Club. The funding, obtained through a Rotary International Global Grant, was driven by the vision of Michael Slattery, Past President of Tralee Rotary Club. The project aims to help impoverished families in Lesotho with small plots of land (minimum 42 sq. metres) but no means to farm them. Local partners will provide training in essential horticultural skills, enabling participants to grow food for their families and sell surplus produce as small businesses.
To ensure success, the initiative will supply hand tools, seeds, seedlings and fertiliser. Climate challenges such as hail, heat and heavy rains will be addressed with protective shadenet structures to safeguard crops.
Action Lesotho will play a key role in sustainability, using its greenhouse facility to produce up to 130,000 seedlings annually—enough for 100 families in the initial phase. The Maseru Rotary Club will help set up a local network for selling surplus produce, providing income and longterm self-reliance.
“This project is a tangible step toward breaking the cycle of poverty for families in Lesotho,” said Grace
Aghadoe Heights Hotel and Spa has welcomed Alan Keaney as its new Executive Sous Chef, marking an exciting new chapter for the 5-star Killarney resort’s dining experience. Originally from Leitrim, Alan brings over 25 years of culinary expertise, having trained in three Michelinstarred restaurants and worked in five 5-star hotels. His impressive career includes three years as Sous Chef at Cork’s Michelin-starred Restaurant Chestnut, as well as time at Michael Deane’s in Belfast and the Balmoral Hotel in Edinburgh—both retaining their Michelin status during his tenure.
Alan began his hospitality journey aged just 14, washing dishes in his local pub before training at the National Tourism College Killybegs. His style blends classical cooking with modern techniques, and he’s eager to work with Kerry’s exceptional local produce.
“I’ve long admired the creativity of Cedric Bottarlini and his team,” said Alan. “I’m excited to bring my Michelin-star experience to Aghadoe Heights and create beautiful dishes for both casual and fine dining.”
General Manager Brian Bowler said Alan will play a key role in developing innovative menus, from the popular
Minister for Children, Disability, Equality and Kerry, Norma Foley TD, has launched Bia Blasta (Delicious Food), a new nutrition programme providing daily lunches for pre-school children at risk of disadvantage.
Part of the Equal Start funding model, the scheme will operate in all 27 Early Start services in Kerry, ensuring children receive a nutritious meal while attending early learning and care. Nationally, the €4.2 million initiative will benefit 25,000 children.
Bia Blasta aims to tackle child food poverty, reduce the risk of hunger, and help children learn about and
enjoy healthy foods. Services will receive guidance from a dedicated dietitian, and mealtimes will be integrated into a learning framework that encourages food preparation, sharing, and cleanup.
Minister Foley said the programme will “combat hunger, improve attention levels, and boost overall wellbeing,” praising early years educators for delivering the initiative.
Funding includes €3.2 million for 2025 and an additional €1 million this year for equipment purchases such as fridges, ovens, or dishwashers.
This marks the first time dedicated funding will support children attending the free, universal three-
hour ECCE pre-school programme, replacing the need for children to bring lunch from home.

It was ship ahoy in Dublin this week as RTÉ stars Dáithí Ó Sé and Kathryn Thomas welcomed 32 Roses aboard the MV Cill Airne to officially launch the 65th Rose of Tralee International Festival. The glamour and excitement were flowing as Roses from every corner of Ireland — and the world — gathered for their first official meetup ahead of the big week in Tralee. This year’s five-day festival will climax on Monday 18 and Tuesday 19 August with the live televised selection of the 2025 International Rose of Tralee. The shows go out on RTÉ One and RTÉ Player from 8pm each night, breaking for the Nine O’Clock News before returning at 9.35pm.
Dáithí, who’s marking 15 years as
host, said he still gets “that buzz” when the Dome lights up: “Every year brings fresh faces, great stories and pride in the achievements of Irish women worldwide. This year’s going to be something special.”
Kathryn, back for her third year, is equally fired up: “It’s not all about gowns or glitter — it’s about grit, grace and the powerful stories behind each Rose. I can’t wait to meet this year’s group and be part of the magic all over again.”
Fans at home won’t miss a beat, with the whole festival streamed live worldwide on RTÉ Player, plus behind-the-scenes clips, archive footage and extras on RTÉ.ie and social media.
James Patrice returns as the backstage Rose Reporter, ready to
share the gossip and giggles across Facebook, Instagram, X and TikTok. The countdown is on — the Roses are on their way to Tralee, and
the stage is set for a sparkling celebration of Irish charm, craic and community.
Gallivan Financial has bolstered its Kerry presence with the acquisition of Kelly O’Shea Pensions & Financial Services in Tralee, while also entering the Dublin market for the first time through the purchase of Mount Street Group.
Founded in 2006 by Aidan Kelly, Kelly O’Shea manages approximately €40 million in assets for 320 clients. Kelly will remain with the business to ensure continuity for clients. “Finding the right partner for the next chapter was incredibly important. Gallivan Financial shares our values and longterm commitment to clients,” he said.
The Mount Street Group, based in Dublin, brings €150 million in assets under management and over 500 clients to Gallivan’s portfolio. Founder Marie Ainsworth said merging with Gallivan was the best way to grow while maintaining service standards.
Managing Director Fergal Smith welcomed both teams, noting the shared values and client-first approach. “These partnerships strengthen Gallivan’s national footprint while preserving the personalised service our clients know and trust,” he said.
The two acquisitions mark Gallivan’s third and fourth major deals in just two years, following the purchase of Vincent Casey Life & Pensions in Killarney and FJ Hanly & Associates in Limerick.
Gallivan Financial, majority-owned by the Gallivan family, now has offices in Killarney, Limerick, Tralee, and Dublin, and is actively pursuing further acquisitions to become a significant player in Ireland’s growing wealth management sector. Both deals are subject to regulatory approval and are expected to complete in the coming weeks.

Kerry FC 0–1 Finn Harps Kerry FC fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat at home to Finn Harps in Mounthawk Park on Friday night. After a promising Bank Holiday weekend with four points collected, hopes were high, but the Donegal side edged the contest. Kerry started brightly with strong saves from goalkeeper Matthew Connor and a close-range header from Robbie Cleary kept out. Sean McGrath was forced off injured on the half-hour mark following a heavy challenge, adding to the hosts’ frustration.
The second half started with promise, but a headed goal by Harps’ Kieran Cooney from a corner in the 50th minute proved decisive. Kerry struggled to create clear chances thereafter, despite dominating possession.
Late drama saw Daniel Okwute receive a straight red card in injury time for a high foot, ending any hopes of a late comeback.
Kerry FC now shift focus to the FAI Cup clash v Cobh Ramblers at Mounthawk Park next Friday— coinciding with Rose of Tralee celebrations.
Kerry FC XI: Connor, O’Connell, Crowe, McQueen, McGrath, Teahan, Amechi, Cleary, Aladesanusi, Barrett, Brookwell.
Goal (Harps): Cooney (50’) Red Card: Okwute (90+)
Keith from Green Energy Ireland answers some of the most popular question he gets while out and about transforming homes, business & schools into using green energy!
Q: Do I need planning permission?
A: Most rooftop systems don't need planning permission, and have been exempt for several years now. Ground-mounted systems under 25m2 are also exempt. Some permission may be needed however in areas near airports, hospitals, protected structures or conservation zones. When unsure, always check with your local authority.
& A Keith Malee Sales Manager, Green Energy Ireland
We are delighted with the feedback we are getting from some of our recent Solar Energy clients.
Keith Malee, Sales Manager, Green Energy Ireland
“We had an excellent experience with Green Energy Ireland for our solar PV installation. From start to finish, the entire process was smooth, professional, and hassle-free. We dealt with Keith, the actual sales manager, who was incredibly helpful throughout the project — always available to answer questions, provide clear explanations, and keep us updated at every stage. His knowledge and support made a big difference, and we couldn’t be happier with the results. Highly recommended (and we have! ) 5 STARS All the way!”
