Carrie has booked her holiday through a good value airline and booked her accommodation separately with a holiday booking website. She has also booked excursions at the location they are going in Sardinia. She is really looking forward to the holiday. When they arrive, the accommodation is only half built, and they would have to camp in the garden to be accommodated there. Fortunately, they did not deduct from her credit card, so she had funds to book elsewhere but finds it very difficult to find accommodation near the sea and the excursions they have booked. The find more expensive accommodation further inland but must rent a car to get about which they had not planned to do she is wondering whether she has any remedies in law.
If one books all the items for a holiday separately one is not covered by the very effective Package Holidays and Travel Trade Act 1995. This means that if you book a package i.e. at least two items e.g. flight and accommodation together there are rights to full refund of up to twice the cost of the holiday if things go wrong. A Package Holiday is one sold at an all-inclusive price, it consists of all least two types of travel service and covers at least 24 hours or includes an overnight stay and is all from the same seller. The other EU protection is in relation to Linked travel arrangements (LTAs) are when you buy two or more travel components (flights, accommodation, car rental etc) from different businesses as separate transactions. This has much less protection than the Package Holiday protection and only relates to one of the companies going bankrupt and getting your money back.
Neither of the above protections apply to Carrie. As Carrie has booked directly the airline has no liability to her, they got her from A to B and all she can do is try and get money back through the holiday booking website, but they have loads of exclusion clauses in their terms and conditions usually making them not liable in relation to individual accommodation. The only resort then is to the individual accommodation supplier who may be a limited company for the loss suffered e.g. increased accommodation costs, car rental. There may be an avenue through the European Consumer Claims procedure https://www.eccireland.ie/contact-us/once one has the name of the accommodation provider to bring a small claim for the loss suffered if the accommodation provider does nto respond to a complaints letter or mediation. If Carrie has travel insurance, she might consider putting a claim in for the difficulties and expense she has encountered.

Keith from Green Energy Ireland answers some of the most popular question he gets while out and about transforming homes, business & schools into using green energy!
Q: Can I sell extra energy to the grid?
A: Yes! Through the Micro-generation Support Scheme and Clean Export Guarantee (CEG), you can export unused electricity and receive payments via your electricity provider. A smart meter is needed for accurate tracking, and ESB Networks are prioritising these for solar users.

We are delighted with the feedback we are getting from some of our recent Solar Energy clients.
Keith Malee, Sales Manager, Green Energy Ireland
“We had an excellent experience with Green Energy Ireland for our solar PV installation. From start to finish, the entire process was smooth, professional, and hassle-free. We dealt with Keith, the actual sales manager, who was incredibly helpful throughout the project — always available to answer questions, provide clear explanations, and keep us updated at every stage. His knowledge and support made a big difference, and we couldn’t be happier with the results. Highly recommended (and we have! ) 5 STARS All the way!”

MUM-of-two Carley Stack has presented a cheque for €6000 to Kerry Mental Health Association after successfully completing her Leap for Life Skydive fundraiser for suicide and mental health awareness.
A three-day weather postponement from the original Father’s Day jump in June didn’t stop the mental health nurse from Ardfert, County Kerry from achieving her goal. Her daughters, Sophie and Emma, cheered Carley on while her husband Dawid and her daughter’s Godfather, Oskar also took part in the event in County Offaly on 18th June. Carley, who works as a mental health staff nurse in Kerry, said: “It was a terrifying experience, especially the initial fall from the plane, but my skydive partner was calm and helped me through the challenge. When the initial jump of Father’s Day was postponed, I didn’t hesitate when offered the next available
date three days later so that I could fulfil the commitment to complete the skydive. Overall, I am most grateful to everyone who donated money and to my family, friends and colleagues for their support. Every donation will make a difference to the lives of people who may be struggling with their mental health, their families and carers.”
Kerry Mental Health supports people in Kerry mental health challenges, their families and carers through befriending, funding community mental health educational and therapeutic activities.
The General Manager of Kerry Mental Health Association, John Drummey, said “Congratulations to Carley for showing such courage to make the Leap for Life. We are grateful to her and everyone who donated to the fundraiser for their support. The funds will contribute to improving the mental health services
available in Kerry, making a tangible difference in the lives of those affected by mental health issues.”
Kerry Mental Health Association’s next big fundraising event will be the annual #TieDayFriday countywide event which coincides with World Mental Health Day, Friday 10th October 2025.
Anyone with plans to raise funds for Kerry Mental Health Association on #TieDayFriday or at any other time of the year can contact John Drummey at Manager@ KerryMentalHealth.ie or donate online at https://KerryMentalHealth. ie/donate.

The 321 Down Syndrome Kerry Charity Shop is marking its 10th anniversary with a special community celebration Today Friday, 8th August from 4 to 6 PM at its shop on Strand Street, Tralee. This year’s event will be extra memorable as it coincides with the arrival of cyclists from the Tour de Munster, a four-day charity cycle raising funds for Down Syndrome Ireland. The cyclists will roll into Tralee during the event, adding to the energy and meaning of the day. The celebration will feature live music by Nitelife, family-friendly fun, face painting, and light refreshments.
Visitors can also enjoy a special €2 clothes sale, with every item in the shop priced at just €2 for the day. Shop Manager Rachel Fitzgerald said the milestone is a tribute to the community’s incredible support. “Welcoming the Tour de Munster riders makes it even more special. It’s a real celebration of inclusion, support, and determination.”
The event is open to all, with proceeds supporting local services through Down Syndrome Kerry.
Whether you’re a regular or a firsttime visitor, all are welcome to join the celebration.
Fianna Fáil Councillor Tommy Cahill has called on Kerry County Council to install outdoor shower taps and improve accessibility at beaches throughout the county, not just at Blue Flag locations.
At the July council meeting, Cllr Cahill said facilities like showers are now essential, especially with the rise in year-round sea swimming, surfing, and coastal walking. “Shower taps are a basic necessity. These should be rolled out across all Kerry beaches, not just the 13 with Blue Flag status,” he said.
While acknowledging the Council’s prioritisation of Blue Flag beaches
for upgrades, Cllr Cahill argued that all beaches deserve the same level of investment and care to support both locals and tourists.
Waterville Beach, Inny Strand, Men’s Beach in Ballybunion, and Banna Strand near the watchtower (north end) are key locations lacking basic infrastructure. “These are busy beaches used by swimmers and families all year long. They need proper facilities like showers and accessible pathways,” he said.
. “Kerry’s coastline is world-class. Every beach should be accessible, well-equipped, and welcoming,” he added.
The Council confirmed that while funding is prioritised for Blue Flag locations, the possibility of extending improvements to other beaches will remain under review.
Cahill pledged to continue

On Sunday, August 3rd, Ballymac Vintage Club hosted its 15th Classic Car and Honda 50 Run, beginning with a sunny morning Cars & Coffee meet at O’Riada’s Bar & Restaurant. Over 120 vehicles turned up, offering a vibrant display for enthusiasts to admire.
This year’s run was held in memory of founding member Lucy Breen, well-known in the vintage scene
with her iconic yellow 1973 Rover 2000. Lucy co-founded the run with George Glover and John Breen 15 years ago.
Special guests included 2025 Kerry Rose Laura Daly, who selected two standout cars for spot prizes, and Rose Bud Sophie Horan representing Queensland in this year’s Rose of Tralee.
Funds raised went to two local
causes close to Lucy’s heart — Tralee Community Hospital and Scoil Nuachabháil. The club extends thanks to main sponsors BG Motors, Browne’s Agri Steel, O’Riada’s, and numerous local businesses who contributed generous spot and raffle prizes.
After viewing the cars and bikes, participants embarked on a scenic drive through Castleisland and
Brosna, finishing at Knocknagoshel Community Centre, where the local Meals on Wheels team provided refreshments.
The club thanks all attendees, Gardaí, volunteers, Lucy’s family, and supporters.

Dr Pieter van der Merwe answers
Q: What is cholesterol and why is it important?
A: Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance found in your blood. Your body needs it to build cells and produce hormones. However, too much cholesterol—especially "bad" LDL cholesterol—can increase your risk of heart disease and stroke.
Q: What causes raised cholesterol levels?
A: Raised cholesterol can result from several factors. These include an unhealthy diet high in saturated and trans fats, lack of exercise, obesity, smoking, and excessive alcohol use. Genetics also play a role—some people inherit a tendency to have high cholesterol, a condition known as familial hypercholesterolemia.
Q: Are there any symptoms of high cholesterol?
A: No, high cholesterol usually has no symptoms. It can silently build up in your arteries over time, leading to serious health issues. That’s why regular blood tests are crucial to monitor your levels.
Q: How is high cholesterol diagnosed?
A: A simple blood test called a lipid panel can measure your total cholesterol, LDL ("bad"), HDL ("good"), and triglycerides. Your doctor will interpret the results based on your overall health and risk factors.
Q: How can raised cholesterol be managed or reduced?
A: Lifestyle changes are key: eating a heart-healthy diet, increasing physical activity, quitting smoking, and limiting alcohol. In some cases, medication like statins may be prescribed to help lower cholesterol levels.
Q: Why is managing cholesterol important?
A: High cholesterol increases the risk of heart disease, heart attacks, and strokes. By keeping your cholesterol in check, you protect your heart and improve your long-term health.

Bob, a 70-year-old, extremely wealthy widower shows up at the Country Club with a breathtakingly beautiful 25 year-old blonde who knocks everyone’s socks off with her youthful looks and charm. She hangs onto Bob’s arm and listens intently to his every word.
His buddies at the club are all aghast. At the very first chance, they corner him and ask, “Bob, how did you get the trophy girlfriend?”
Bob replies, “Girlfriend? She’s my wife!” They’re amazed, but continue to ask. “So, how did you persuade her to marry you?”
“I lied about my age”, Bob replies. “What, did you tell her you were only 50?” Bob smiles and says, “No, I told her I was 90.”
One day I accidentally overturned my golf buggy. Elizabeth, a very attractive and keen golfer, who lived in a villa on the golf course, heard the noise and called out, Are you okay, what’s your name?”
“Its Jack , and I’m Okay thanks,” I replied.
“Jack , forget your troubles. Come to my villa, rest a while, and I’ll help you get the cart up later.”
“That’s mighty nice of you,” I answered, but I don’t think my wife would like it.”
“Oh, come on,” Elizabeth insisted. She was very pretty and persuasive... I was weak. “Well okay,” I finally agreed, and added, “but my wife won’t like it.”
After a restorative brandy, and some creative putting lessons, I thanked my host. “I feel a lot better now, but I know my wife is going to be really upset.”
“Don’t be silly! Elizabeth said with a smile, She won’t know anything. By the way, where is she?”
“Under the cart!”
It’s already run out of battery.
I came home from the golf course today, and found a note my wife had left on the refrigerator.
IT’S NOT WORKING.
I CAN’T TAKE IT ANYMORE. GONE TO STAY WITH MY SISTER
I opened the fridge. The light came on. The beer was cold. What the HELL is she talking about?
Afterwards the host takes his guest down to the local pub. They leave the pub completely smashed and Roy and Jonathan decide to break into a distillery. Roy is the first to open a cask, tastes it, and asks Jonathan, “Is this whiskey?”
Jonathan replies, “Not as wisky as wobbing a bank!”
If they fell forward they’d still be in the boat.
This rooster wakes up early Easter Sunday morning. He sticks his head out of the chicken coop, and sees all these multicolored eggs all over the barnyard. He takes a look at the eggs, takes a look at the hens, takes another look at the eggs, takes one more look at the hens, he thinks about it for a minute, then he walks across the barnyard and smashes the peacock.

The Kerry Cancer Support Group (KCSG), in partnership with Mater Private Network, has launched a new cancer support bus to transport patients from Kerry to the MidWestern Radiation Oncology Centre in Limerick. The upgraded vehicle replaces the original Healthlink bus, which has covered nearly 300,000 kilometres since 2019, helping hundreds of patients access vital treatment safely and comfortably. The service, free of charge, is a crucial support for cancer patients and their families, many of whom face long journeys while dealing with treatment side effects or limited transport options. It began in 2018 after a single patient’s need sparked what is now a lifeline for many across the region.
KCSG Manager Breda Dyland said the new bus ensures the continuation of their vital work: “This service reduces stress and isolation,
saves on transport costs, and creates a mobile support network for patients.”
Lorraine Walsh, Consultant Radiation Oncologist at Mater Private, praised the partnership: “This initiative removes barriers to care and supports patients through one of the most difficult times in their lives.”
Don’t miss this incredible opportunity to be part of a unique club! Join us now!

Kathleen Nolan from Listowel shared her experience, saying the service gave her independence and
comfort: “The drivers and fellow passengers turned every trip into something far less daunting.” The upgraded service reflects a continued commitment to community-based, compassionate care, ensuring no Kerry patient faces cancer treatment alone.

KERRY FC
Kerry FC Weekly Notes SSE Airtricity First Division – Matchdays 24 & 25
Kerry FC 4-0 Athlone Town – A Dominant Display in Tralee
Kerry FC returned to winning ways in emphatic fashion last Friday night as they secured a 4-0 win over Athlone Town in front of a delighted Mounthawk Park crowd. It was the club’s first league win since June 20th and their biggest ever margin of victory in the SSE
Airtricity First Division.
Ronan Teahan opened the scoring midway through the first half after a clever through ball from Robbie Cleary. Just four minutes later, Sean O’Connell scored directly from a corner to double the lead. Before the break, Cleary added a third with a superb solo effort—well deserved after his outstanding first-half performance.
Kerry remained composed and controlled in the second half. Carl Mujaguzi rounded off the scoring with a stunning long-range strike in the 63rd minute. New signings Matthew Connor and Ewan Lee both impressed, with Connor keeping a clean sheet on debut and Lee solid across the full 90 minutes. The result was a huge boost for Colin Healy’s side, especially after a tough run of five league defeats.
Treaty United 1-1 Kerry FC – Grit and a
On Bank Holiday Monday, Kerry FC travelled to Limerick for a Munster Derby showdown with Treaty United. Riding high from their weekend win, Kerry looked to build momentum. Treaty, meanwhile, were coming off the back of a frustrating defeat to Bray and were determined to respond.
The opening stages were scrappy, with chances at a premium. Kerry’s Daniel Okwute looked to have been taken down in a one-on-one moment late in the first half, but the referee waved play on. At half-time, it was goalless, with everything to play for.
Treaty broke the deadlock in the 65th minute as Patrick Ferry’s header crept past Matthew Connor. However, Kerry didn’t let their heads drop. Substitutes brought fresh attacking energy, and Kerry kept pressing.
With six minutes remaining, a long throw-in from Sam Aladesanusi caused chaos in the box. The Treaty defence failed to clear it, and Ewan Lee pounced to stab the ball home for a dramatic equaliser. It was a deserved reward for a spirited second-half effort and a solid away point for the Kingdom.
What’s Next?
Kerry FC return home this Friday night as they host Finn Harps at Mounthawk Park. With four points from their last two games and momentum building, Kerry will be looking to continue their upward form. Kick-off is at 7:45pm.
The club recently welcomed Matthew Connor, Ewan Lee, and Luke Doolan to the squad in the final week of the transfer window. All three are already making an impact, giving Colin Healy more depth as Kerry push on through the second half of the season.
Two strong performances, one historic win, and a gritty draw—Kerry FC are back with a bang. Na Ríochta Abú!

Remembering a loving husband and father, and a caring friend on the 11-th anniversary of death.
Dear Val, you were a generous, kind and gentle man. Your wisdom, devotion and support helped us with all of life’s challenges, and made us feel protected and secure. Immensely talented, you were always modest and served as an example and an inspiration to everyone who knew you both in the world of music and in the engineering profession. We remember you every day and we never stop loving you.
A Mass was offered on 22 July 2025, in St John’s Church, Tralee, in memory of Val Allister. We are very grateful to friends and relatives who shared this day with us. A special thank you to Val’s friends from Tralee Probus club and Kerry School of Music for keeping his memory alive and for joining us in celebration of Val’s life and accomplishments on the anniversary of his passing.
“Those we love remain with us for love itself lives on, and cherished memories never fade because a loved one’s gone. Those we love can never be more than a thought apart, for as long as there is memory, they’ll live on in the heart.”.
Love you always, your wife Nadia, children Veronika and Roman and all your friends.
