At 12.00 noon on Saturday next, 2nd August, people will gather at the Roger Casement MEMORIAL near Banna Strand to remember once again and to commemorate the life, work and sacrifices of Roger Casement who, on Good Friday 1916, was arrested in Ardfert and who was imprisoned in London, convicted of treason at the Old Bailey and executed by hanging at Pentonville Prison on August 3rd 1916….109 years ago. He was executed, of course, for his role in the 1916 Easter Rising and was the last of the Rising leaders to be executed.
On that fateful Good Friday he had arrived at the coast of Kerry in a German submarine, the U19, with two companions and they ‘rowed ashore onto the lonely Banna Strand.’ No waiting comrades were there to greet them! They had travelled from Wilhelmshaven, Germany.
His fellow passengers were Robert Monteith and Daniel Bailey. Robert had soldiered for 16 years with the British Army in India and in South Africa. Daniel had served for 9 years in the British Army in India and in Burma and, later, in August 1914 (WW1), he had landed in France, was wounded, captured and imprisoned at a POW camp.
On Saturday next, at this year’s Roger Casement Gathering at the Banna Casement MEMORIAL, assembled admirers of Ruairí Mac Easmainn will be addressed by Dr Tim Horgan, historian and author. Seinnfidh Neansaí Ní Chonchúir ceol fidle. Tionól Mhic Easmainn agus Conradh na Gaeilge (Trá Lí) atá i mbun eagraithe. Fáilte roimh chách.

Following the forwards masterful display at Croke Park during the AllIreland final, fans believe Clifford is in line to win the RTÉ award.
Clifford starred throughout the final with nine points and scored a record 86 points over the course of the championship. The Fossa man was also awarded Player of the Year after
the match. He is currently 2/1 to win the Sports Person of the Year award.

‘Living for Today, Planning for Tomorrow’ is Theme of 2025 Awareness Campaign – Residents across Kerry are being urged to explore how palliative care can help people live well with lifelimiting illnesses, as the All Ireland Institute of Hospice and Palliative Care (AIIHPC) launches its 2025 awareness campaign.
Palliative Care Week 2025 runs from 7–13 September across the island of Ireland, aiming to raise awareness of how palliative care improves quality of life—not just at end-of-life, but throughout serious illness. The campaign, titled ‘Living for Today, Planning for Tomorrow’, highlights the value of early conversations and planning for future care, while embracing life in the present.
Palliative care supports people’s
physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs, while also offering vital support to families and carers. It enables people of all ages to continue daily activities and hobbies and maintain meaningful relationships.
To bring this message into communities, AIIHPC is inviting Kerry residents to take part in a special photo competition. Locals are encouraged to submit a photo that reflects this year’s theme, showing what “Living for Today, Planning for Tomorrow” means to them. Winning entries will receive prizes and be featured on thepalliativehub.com.
AIIHPC CEO Karen Charnley said, “We want to normalise conversations about palliative care. It enhances quality of life and allows people to live well, even while
planning for what lies ahead.”
Fintan Fagan, Chair of AIIHPC, added, “Understanding the benefits of palliative care can make a meaningful difference—for patients, carers, and entire communities.”

McElligotts Kia has announced an exciting new sustainability partnership with the Rose of Tralee International Festival, marking the eighth year of their support. This year, the Tralee-based dealership will debut a fully electric vehicle (EV) fleet, delivering the Festival’s firstever zero-emissions Rose Parade.
On Friday, August 16th and Sunday, August 17th, nine electric Kias will lead the Féile Thrá Lí parades, each equipped with towing systems for float support. Thanks to Vehicle-
to-Load (V2L) technology, the fleet won’t just be pulling floats – it’ll also be powering events, such as a Yoga Retreat at Tralee Wetlands, eliminating the need for diesel generators.
V2L enables up to 80% of an EV’s battery to be used externally, sufficient to power a typical household for up to five days. It can be accessed via a standard 3-pin socket or through a special connector at the car’s charging port, making it ideal for powering
appliances during outdoor events, camping, or emergencies.
Declan O’Hara, Dealer Principal at McElligotts Tralee, said: “We’re proud to sponsor the Rose of Tralee again, this time with a full EV fleet. These vehicles are not only powerful enough to tow, but versatile enough to power entire events. Our customers have even used them during power outages, showing just how practical this technology is.”
Festival Director Steve Cronly added, “We’re thrilled to work with
McElligotts on this sustainable initiative. We’re committed to reducing our environmental impact and this partnership is a meaningful step forward.”
McElligotts will also showcase Kia’s full electric range during the Festival, including the EV3, EV6, and sevenseater EV9, all available with 0% finance and payments from €246/ month. Learn more at MCE.ie or visit McElligotts on the Listowel Road, Tralee.

Tralee’s very own Gerry Young is back and ready to make this year’s Super Sunday the biggest yet!
Pictured last year with Colette and Chris Shortt of the Tralee Advertiser at the Grand Hotel, Gerry – a proud Tralee man now based in the UK – is once again the driving force behind the hugely popular Super Sunday during the Rose Festival weekend, taking place on Sunday, August 17th on Denny Street.
Gerry, who runs his successful international construction company Young Homes from the UK, has never forgotten his roots. “I left Tralee over 50 years ago, but I always come home. It’s where my heart is,” he said. “Tralee was buzzing last year.
I’ll be here again with my brother
Peter and family. Hats off to the organisers – it’s bloody hard work but they’ve made this a world-class event!”
Young Homes is proudly sponsoring Super Sunday for the fourth year in a row, bringing some of Europe’s best tribute acts to Tralee. This year’s tribute lineups includes the electric Tina Turner, smooth Tom Jones, and the explosive Qween, ready to rock the crowds on Denny Street from 7:30pm to 11:00pm.
In a new addition for 2025, Gerry and Young Homes are also sponsoring IE DC, an AC/DC tribute band, who will take the stage in The Square on Saturday, August 16th at 9:30pm sharp.
Last year’s Super Sunday drew over 12,000 people, and Gerry admits it was an emotional moment.
“There was a lump in my throat seeing Denny Street packed. I’m a proud Kerry man and already planning next year’s event!”
Five Kerry-based artists and arts organisations will receive a combined total of €364,000 through the Arts Council’s Arts Grant Funding scheme for 2026. The announcement is part of a wider national investment of €17.1 million, with 218 recipients across Ireland, up from 194 last year. The scheme, one of the Arts Council’s key competitive funding programmes, supports artists and organisations to carry out multiple creative activities over a set period, promoting sustained, high-quality arts engagement nationwide. In Kerry, recipients include the Cill Rialaig Project, Fanzini Productions, St John’s Arts Centre, Writers’ Week, and choreographer Catherine Young, with funding ranging from €50,000 to over €112,000. This round of funding comes amid
record demand, with over 7,500 eligible applications received across all schemes last year.
Maura McGrath, Chair of the Arts Council, said: “Arts Grant Funding is a vital strand of our investment in Ireland’s arts infrastructure. It supports meaningful, long-term artistic work that connects people and communities. While we’re proud to support this year’s recipients, we also recognise that many excellent applications went unfunded. We continue to advocate for increased resources for our vibrant and growing sector.”
The funding represents a significant boost to Kerry’s arts community, supporting a diverse range of projects that will contribute to the county’s cultural life in the years ahead.

She went down to the door in her towel. She opened it to our neighbour, Bob. Bob looks at her, and quickly says, “Look this might be weird but ill give you €800 if you drop the towel right now. She proceeds to drop the towel, exposing herself to Bob.
Bob hands here the 800 euros and walks away.
My wife comes upstairs. I asked her, Hey, who was at the door?
“Oh, just our neighbor Bob.” She says. I say, “Oh damn, where’d he go? Does he have the €800 he owes me?”
A woman gets into a very busy restaurant around lunch time. She is told the next available table would be free in an hour. She holds her phone to her ear, and with a loud voice says: “Honey, you won’t believe it, but your husband is having lunch with his girlfriend at so-and-so restaurant” Half the diners instantly get up and rush to the exit..
A man walks into a store looking for a toilet brush. The store owner shows him a variety of brushes at various pricepoints. The man thinks for a little while, then buys the cheapest one.
The next day the man is back at the store. “Were you unhappy with your purchase?” asks the shopkeeper. “We have other models that might work better.”
The man agrees and buys a little more expensive one.
The next day the man is back yet again. The shopkeeper, visually puzzled on how a toilet brush can be such a big deal, asks “What’s the matter, didn’t like the new one either?”
“Well” replies the man. “To be honest it was pretty effective. But I gotta say, I prefer toilet paper!”

KERRY FC
Mixed Fortunes for Kerry FC in Cup
Thriller and League Disappointment Kerry FC experienced a week of contrasting emotions as they followed a thrilling extra-time victory in the FAI Cup with a deflating defeat in the First Division league.
On Friday, July 18th, Kerry overcame Athlone Town 2-1 after extra time at Mounthawk Park in the FAI Cup Second Round, snapping a run of poor form. After falling behind in the second half, a stunning late free-kick by Joe Adams brought the Kingdom level and forced extra time. Kennedy Amechi then fired home the winner just minutes into the added period after a brilliant run and assist from Daniel Okwute. The result was a huge morale boost for Kerry, showcasing their resilience and team spirit.
However, the feel-good factor didn’t carry into league action the following Friday, July 25th, as UCD AFC handed Kerry a heavy 3-0 defeat. Kerry’s night unraveled early after a red card for Niall Brookwell in the 7th minute. Down to ten men, they struggled to contain UCD, who scored twice in the first half and added a third through Adam Brennan early in the second. Kerry’s few attacking moments, including a promising late effort from Okwute, fell short.
The team now looks to bounce back as they prepare to face Athlone again this Friday , followed by a trip to Treaty United.in Limerick on Bank Holiday Monday
Keith from Green Energy Ireland answers some of the most popular question he gets while out and about transforming homes, business & schools into using green energy!
Q: How many solar panels will I need?
A: That depends on your usage and goals. A typical home using 3,900kWh/year may need about 10 south facing panels (4kW system). If your panels face East or West, or encounter shading, you may need more. We recommend a tailored assessment to get it right.
Keith Malee
Sales Manager, Green Energy Ireland
We are delighted with the feedback we are getting from some of our recent Solar Energy clients.
Keith Malee, Sales Manager, Green Energy Ireland
I had Green Energy Ireland install 14 panels in September 2024. It has generated 4.5MWs to date and I have not had a debit electricity bill since installation, generating even on the dullest of days. Keith and all the Green Energy Ireland staff gave superb and excellent service. High standards and delivery on time.
I highly recommend Green Energy Ireland for solar panel installation...Definitely 5 Star service!
