Dr Pieter van der Merwe answers
Q: What is the prostate, and why is it important?
A: The prostate is a small gland about the size of a walnut, located just below the bladder in men. It plays a key role in the male reproductive system by producing fluid that nourishes and protects sperm.
Q: What are common prostate health issues?
A: The most common concerns are benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), prostatitis, and prostate cancer. BPH is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate, often causing urinary issues. Prostatitis is inflammation, usually from infection. Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in men, especially over age 50.
Q: What symptoms should men watch for?
A: Frequent urination, especially at night, weak urine flow, difficulty starting or stopping urination, and pain in the pelvic area or lower back can all be warning signs. These symptoms may not always indicate cancer but should be evaluated by a doctor.
Q: How can prostate health be monitored?
A: Regular check-ups are key. Doctors may perform a digital rectal exam (DRE) and a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test. These screenings help detect abnormalities early, often before symptoms appear.
Q: Are there ways to support prostate health?
A: Yes. A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats, along with regular exercise, can support overall prostate health. Limiting red meat, staying hydrated, and avoiding smoking also help. Some studies suggest that foods like tomatoes, green tea, and soy may have protective effects.
Q: When should men start getting screened?
A: Men should begin discussing prostate health with their doctor around age 50, or earlier if they have a family history of prostate cancer or are in a higher-risk group, such as African American men.
Maintaining prostate health is a vital part of aging well. Early detection and healthy habits can make a big difference.
Minister for Children, Disability, Equality and Kerry TD Norma Foley has welcomed new changes to the Carer’s Allowance that will benefit almost 200 families in Kerry. From Thursday, July 3rd, the income disregard thresholds for Carer’s Allowance will increase. Single carers will now be able to earn up to €625 per week (up from €450) and carers with a spouse or partner up to €1,250 per week (up from €900) without losing eligibility. According to new figures, 196 carers in Kerry will immediately receive higher payments, and more people will now qualify for the allowance under the updated rules. Minister Foley praised the move, saying, “Carers make an invaluable contribution, and this change marks another positive step towards our goal of abolishing the means test for Carer’s Allowance.”
As outlined in Budget 2025, a two-adult household earning up to €69,000 will now qualify for the full Carer’s Allowance, with partial payments extending to those earning up to €97,000. From July, 99% of recipients will receive the full-rate payment. This change represents an 88% increase in income limits since 2022, reinforcing Fianna Fáil’s commitment to supporting carers. In 2025, over €1.24 billion will be spent on the Carer’s Allowance, which supports more than 100,000 carers nationwide. Non-means-tested supports like the Carer’s Benefit and the €2,000 Carer’s Support Grant, paid to over 138,000 carers on June 5th, remain in place.
Fianna Fáil’s Deputy Michael Cahill and Cllr. Tommy Cahill have heaped praise on Kerry’s “phenomenal” supporters after a thrilling All-Ireland Quarter Final victory over Armagh— and are now calling for urgent increases in transport options ahead of the Semi Final showdown with Tyrone on Saturday, July 12th.
The father-and-son duo, proud GAA men and long-time advocates for the Green and Gold, said the Kerry crowd answered the call to arms, turning Croke Park into a cauldron of passion. “The roar from Kerry fans could be heard across the stadium,” said Deputy Cahill. “It was the lift the team needed—it was worth five or six points, just like David Clifford and Paul Geaney predicted.”
Cllr. Cahill echoed those sentiments, saying: “It was fitting that the best team in the land had the best supporters in the stands. But now we need to get them there again.” The Cahills have begun working closely with Iarnród Éireann and Kerry Airport to secure extra train services and flights for the Semi Final, after previous efforts led to additional transport for the Armagh game. “Demand is sky-high. Trains
are already full, but we’re flat out behind the scenes to get more options added,” they confirmed. With Kerry, Limerick, and Kildare fans all expected to flood the capital that weekend, the Cahills are urging continued public pressure to ensure Kerry fans have the travel options
Chalair has commenced its summer schedule of routes from Kerry Airport to four destinations in France. they need to make their voices heard once more.
“This is our time,” said Deputy Cahill. “Let’s do it again. Let’s turn Croke Park green and gold. An Ríocht Abú! Up the Kingdom! See you in Croker!”

In general, solar panels are designed to last for between 20 and 25 years. While they won’t stop working completely after this period, their efficiency in producing electricity will likely decrease. This means you'll still get energy from them, but not as much as when they were new.

“We had an excellent experience with Green Energy Ireland for our solar PV installation. From start to finish, the entire process was smooth, professional, and hassle-free. We dealt with Keith, the actual sales manager, who was incredibly helpful throughout the project — always available to answer questions, provide clear explanations, and keep us updated at every stage. His knowledge and support made a big difference, and we couldn’t be happier with the results. Highly recommended (and we have! ) 5 STARS All the way!”

We spoke about wills last week which are usually done in conjunction with a solicitor to ensure your wishes are implementable and tax effective and legally compliant. The other document which a like a living will or advance healthcare directive (AHD) can be arranged by people themselves and costs nothing and is setting out your wishes in relation to healthcare if you are ever in a position where you have temporarily or permanently lost your capacity e.g. road traffic accident, stroke or coma.) It is a written statement of the medical or surgical treatment you want or do not want should you not be in a position at a given time in the future to make those wishes known. Treatment is defined as “for a therapeutic, preventative, diagnostic, palliative or other purpose related to the physical or mental health of the person and includes life sustaining treatment.” Examples of treatment you might refuse or request might be cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), mechanical ventilation, tube feeding Dialysis, antibiotics or antiviral medications, electro-convulsive therapy (ECT) And chemotherapy for treatment of cancer. It is possible for people to do separate advance healthcare directives for physical and mental health. An AHD is done up by a person and signed in the presence of two witnesses one of whom must not be a family member. Usually also the AHD maker would appoint a main healthcare representative and a sub who would communicate one’s wishes when one is not able to do so. Certain categories of people e.g. owners of nursing homes are excluded from these positions. The health representative keeps a record of health care decisions made. One can revise or revoke an AHD at any stage. To make an AHD one must be over 18 and have decision-making capacity. While there is no obligation to do an AHD it is a good idea as it gives clarity to relatives about one’s wishes and can be helpful for next of kin liaising with medical and other professionals as they are required to respect a person’s wishes in relation refusal of medical treatment. It would be particularly important to people who have health issues and fluctuating capacity or have been diagnosed with a terminal illness. On a practical level they are very easy to do there is guidance and a form on the www.decisionsupportservice.ie website and also through the www.thinkahead.ie website they have an AHD form and then a short form summarising the AHD for your doctor. Before finalising your AHD it is a good idea to discuss with next of kin and your medical advisor. At present there is no central register of AHD’s but hopefully there will be eventually so it is important to give a copy or summary sheet to your GP to have it on your medical file. Further information on Advance Healthcare Directives available from https://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/health/legal-matters-and-health/advance-care-directives with links to obtain the forms.

Tralee native and Kerins O’Rahilly’s clubman Tommy Walsh is the latest guest on Electric Ireland’s GAA Minor Moments podcast, with Season Four, Episode Ten released this week. In a wide-ranging conversation with host Fergal O’Keeffe, the former Kerry star looks back on his minor football days, his rise to senior success, and his years playing Australian Rules Football.
Walsh reflects on the intense pressure of playing in multiple AllIreland Finals as a teenager, advising young players to enjoy the moment and not get overwhelmed. He highlights the importance of family and community, recalling the pride of sharing Kerry’s 2009 All-Ireland
Senior win with his parents.
He also speaks about the honour of playing in Croke Park as both a minor and a senior, describing the unique atmosphere and the responsibility that comes with wearing the green and gold. In discussing his move to the AFL, Walsh offers insights into the challenges of adapting to a new sport and country, and shares advice for young Irish players considering a similar journey. Grateful for the support of his
coaches, teammates, and family, Walsh urges minor players to keep setbacks in perspective, stressing the value of resilience and self-belief.
The Electric Ireland GAA Minor Moments podcast continues weekly

Tralee woman Honor Enright is taking a leap for a cause close to her heart. On July 20th, she will bravely complete a parachute jump alongside family and friends to raise funds for the Kerry Palliative Care Unit in Tralee. Joining Honor on the skydive are Sharon Enright, Shauna Clifford, Barry Nagle, Trish, Caitlyn, and Shauna Browne. Together, they are rallying support for the invaluable work of Kerry Hospice Foundation, a voluntary organisation established in 1990. Kerry Hospice has already
fully funded and equipped both inpatient and outpatient units at a cost of nearly €11 million—thanks entirely to public donations. However, since the inpatient unit opened in 2017, it has consistently operated above 100% capacity, highlighting the urgent need for expansion.
The Foundation’s current project, Phase 3, involves adding five extra inpatient beds and completing further upgrades, with a projected cost exceeding €6 million. Additionally, funds raised will help support the
employment of Advanced Nurse Practitioners—key professionals who greatly enhance specialist palliative care services across the county. Importantly, every cent raised in Kerry stays in Kerry, directly benefiting local patients and families. Supporters can contribute through Honor’s GoFundMe page, where all donations—big or small—will make a meaningful difference. Kerry FC suffered a heartbreaking 4-3 defeat away to Wexford FC in an electric clash at Ferrycarrig Park, despite a first-half hat-trick from captain Sean McGrath.
Kerry’s evening began brightly under misty skies as McGrath converted an early penalty, awarded after Daniel Okwute was brought down in the box. Moments later, Okwute nearly doubled the lead but struck the post. Wexford equalised through Calum Flynn in the 22nd minute, but Kerry responded as McGrath fired home from distance to restore the lead. Just before the break, McGrath completed his hat-trick from the
penalty spot after Robert McCourt handled the ball and received a red card, giving Kerry a 3-1 lead at halftime and a numerical advantage. The second half saw a spirited Wexford comeback.
Mikie Rowe’s free-kick narrowed the gap to 3-2 just after the restart. Although Kerry had chances, Wexford capitalised. Aaron Dobbs equalised in the 78th minute, and Rowe netted the winner minutes later with a stunning strike after beating two defenders.
