Fiona and Hugh were married for 20 years and have three children. Hugh owned the family home before the marriage, and they lived there throughout. He also inherited a family business, which he expanded during the marriage. Fiona, a public servant, worked part-time while the children were young, later returning full-time and earning promotions. Both have built up significant pension entitlements. Now separating, they are seeking a divorce and want to understand what’s involved.
To apply for a divorce in Ireland, a couple must meet certain conditions: they must have lived apart for at least two of the previous three years (which can include living separately under the same roof), there must be no prospect of reconciliation, and at least one party must have lived in Ireland for the past year. Importantly, the court must be satisfied that proper provision has been made for both spouses from the matrimonial assets. Assets in a divorce can be classified as matrimonial or non-matrimonial Matrimonial assets typically include those acquired during the
marriage—such as savings, pensions, the family home, cars, and contents. Non-matrimonial assets include those acquired before the marriage or received as inheritance. However, these can become matrimonialised—and thus subject to division—if they were used for the benefit of the family during the marriage.
When deciding on the division of assets, the court considers many factors: the origin of the assets, how they were used, the length of the marriage, contributions (financial and non-financial), the ages and health of the parties, and their future needs, including housing.
The goal of the court is not to divide everything equally but to ensure a fair and proper provision. For example, although Hugh owned the house before marriage, as it became the family home, it will likely be divided equally unless the marriage was very short.
As for the inherited business, whether Fiona is entitled to a share depends on the extent to which it became part of the marital life— such as whether she contributed indirectly by caring for the children while Hugh built the business. Ultimately, a judge will decide based on the specific facts of the case.

Do I need to brush my pet’s teeth?
Mary, Blennerville
Just like us, your pets dental health is linked with their overall physical health. Unfortunately, periodontal disease starts to impact many pets within the first few years of their life. Diet control is a big factor in delaying and reducing dental disease. Wet, tinned food or pate tend to stay in the mouth for a longer period, leading to more acid erosion of the gums. A diet based mainly on dried food is usually preferred by vets (but not always by our pets!). You can start by implementing an at-home oral care routine, including brushing your pets’ teeth daily. You can remove any debris or plaque with a finger brush. Use a plaque prevention product (your vet can recommend reputable ones) that you can apply to your pet’s teeth and gums. These products help prevent buildup of plaque. Without proper care it can lead to bad breath, gingivitis (a gum infection), periodontal disease (loosening of teeth) and eventually tooth loss. In addition, this can have very real consequences for your pet’s overall health, as periodontal disease can lead to heart disease (after the bacteria gets into the bloodstream via the mouth, it can infect other organs). To stay on top of dental problems, visiting the vet regularly for an examination and a professional cleaning the best way to keep your dog’s mouth clean and healthy. Additional procedures may be required such as dental x-rays, root canals and extractions in advanced disease.
Here are some signs of dental problems:
• Loose or broken teeth
• Discoloured teeth
• Bad breath
• Swelling, pain, or bleeding in or around the mouth
• Plaque or tartar buildup
• Receding or bleeding gums
• Poor appetite
It is difficult to start brushing your dog or cats’ teeth, they can be resistant. It is best to start when they are puppies and kittens. If it's dangerous or you can't do it, don't risk it. Talk to your vet about alternatives.
Aromatic Indian spices and tender beef combine to create a flavour-packed meal – and it’s our winning 2025 Free Food Festival dish!
• 500g lean beef mince (5% fat or less)
• ½ onion, finely chopped
• 1 tsp chopped garlic
• 1 tsp each of onion granules, ground turmeric, ground cumin, garam masala and ground coriander
• 1 tsp tomato purée
• Boiled dried basmati rice, to serve
• For the sauce:
• 1 large onion, diced
• 2 small carrots, peeled and diced
• 400g can chopped tomatoes
• 1 tsp chopped garlic
• 1 tsp grated fresh ginger
• 2 tbsp each of garam masala and paprika
• 1 tbsp each of ground cumin, ground coriander, ground turmeric and ground fenugreek
Method
Mix together all the meatball ingredients in a bowl, divide the mixture into 16 pieces and use your hands to form them into meatballs. Chill until needed. Add all the sauce ingredients to a large saucepan, along with 300ml water. Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 15 minutes. Blend with a stick blender until fairly smooth (or use your food processor and return the sauce to the pan).
Spray a non-stick frying pan with low-calorie cooking spray and put it over a medium heat. Cook the meatballs for 5 minutes or until browned all over. Add them to the pan containing the sauce and simmer for 10 minutes, or until the meatballs are cooked through. Divide everything between 4 plates and serve with the rice.

Excitement is building as the Tralee Food Festival officially launched in April , with the 2025 edition set to take place from May 16th to 18th. Organisers, sponsors, local dignitaries, and some familiar faces came together to unveil plans for what promises to be the most vibrant year yet.
“This is our third year organising the festival, and we’re proud to see it grow stronger each time,” said organiser Mary Mc Quinn.
“Our mission has always been to create a lively, inclusive event filled with free workshops, demos, and entertainment that highlights the best of local food and talent.”
Thanks to support from Cara Credit Union and the Entára Group, this year’s festival will once again include the popular Taste Trail and, for the first time, three festival awards: Best Restaurant, Best Stall/Vendor,
and Best Shop Front. Judged by Chef Max Bagaglini, Mayor Mikey Sheehy, and food influencer Aisling McCarthy, the awards aim to celebrate excellence and creativity in Tralee’s thriving food and retail scene.
Festival organisers are encouraging local shops to embrace the theme, “A Splash of Colour”, by decorating their windows and getting into the festive spirit. Public input via social media will also play a role in the buzz.
“This is a brilliant opportunity for Tralee to shine,” said Ken Tobin of the committee. “Let’s show locals and visitors just how proud we are of our town.”
Get ready for a weekend full of flavour, colour, and community pride!
Kerry FC suffered a third straight defeat on Friday night as Bray Wanderers ran out 4-2 winners in a lively SSE Airtricity First Division clash at the Carlisle Grounds.
Despite a spirited late comeback, the Kingdom’s hopes of a result were dashed by a ruthless Bray side who extended their winning streak to seven games.
Bray made a fast start, scoring twice within 11 minutes through Danu Kinsella Bishop and Cian Doyle, capitalising on defensive gaps. Kerry responded with changes before the break that improved their shape, but they still trailed 2-0 at halftime. Early in the second half, Kinsella
Bishop grabbed his second and Bray’s third, seemingly sealing the result. However, Kerry refused to fold. Ryan Kelliher struck twice in quick succession late on, the second a superb header from a Ronan Teahan cross, to make it 3-2 with minutes to play.
Just as Kerry pushed for a dramatic equaliser, Bray struck again through Cian Curtis to end the contest.
While the result was another blow for Kerry, the fighting spirit shown in the second half will offer encouragement ahead of their next test away to UCD. Bray, meanwhile, march on as promotion contenders.

On June 13, Tralee native Danny O’Sullivan will begin an emotional journey, cycling from Malin Head to Mizen Head in memory of his late wife, Alison Maguire O’Sullivan. Alison passed away in October 2024 following a brief and sudden battle with cancer. The fundraiser will support the Palliative Care Unit at Kerry General Hospital, whose staff cared for Alison during her final weeks.
Alison’s illness came without warning. Just days before her hospital admission in August, she had enjoyed a holiday in Spain with close friends. A vibrant and active member of her community, Alison was part of the Strand Road “Mothers and Others” club and known for her energy, kindness, and dedication to family.
Born and raised in Lixnaw, Alison was the middle child of Colette and Liam Maguire. As a young girl, she excelled at Irish dancing and basketball. She went on to work in the Kerry General Hospital laboratory, where she spent 14 years as a respected and valued colleague.
Alison met Danny in 2010. Together, they travelled the world, married, and became proud parents to Amelia (7) and William (4).
Danny’s cycle aims not only to honour Alison’s memory but to raise vital funds to help other families receive the same compassionate care. Over €40,000 has already been raised. Donations can be made at: idonate.ie fundraiser.

In today’s fitness world, strength training often steals the spotlight — but we’re here to remind you that cardio is still king when it comes to overall health and longevity. The latest scientific research proves that skipping cardio can be a big mistake on your fitness journey.
A major new study led by Professor Grant Tomkinson shows that low levels of cardiorespiratory fitness are directly linked to serious health issues such as heart failure, depression, diabetes, dementia, and even early death. His advice is clear:
“If you do a lot of 'huff and puff' exercise, your risk of dying early or developing diseases in the future is reduced.”
So what’s the best way to get your cardio in?
We recommend Cardio Peak Training — a smart mix of steady-state cardio with bursts of intensity. Unlike HIIT, it pushes your heart rate up safely and avoids overtraining. A study at Loughborough
University found that just eight weeks of Cardio Peak Training led to:
• A 12% increase in cardio fitness
• A 14% reduction in body fat
• Lower blood pressure and cholesterol
• A noticeable drop in waist size
At Zero Gravity, we offer BODYATTACK™ and RPM™ classes — both live and virtual — to help you reap these benefits. Whether you're a beginner or returning to fitness, our team is here to support you every step of the way.
