...Good News Only!!!

MEET Caoilfhinn... Our New Rose! Caoilfhinn Ní Choiligh, Westmeath Rose is our new 2026 Rose of Tralee. She is the 66th International Rose of Tralee Westmeath Rose Caoilfhinn Ní Choiligh has been crowned the 2026 International Rose of Tralee, bringing another memorable festival to a close in Tralee on Tuesday night. The 25-year-old was visibly stunned when her name was announced shortly before 11.30pm, emerging from a field of 32 International Roses. Last year’s Rose, Laois woman Kathlyn Cummins, presented

Caoilfhinn with her sash as she became the 66th Rose of Tralee. Describing herself as “speechless” and overwhelmed, Caoilfhinn paid an emotional tribute to her fellow Roses before beginning what will be a busy year representing the festival at home and overseas. Caoilfhinn works in retail and is studying wig making, having been inspired by her own experience of losing her hair to alopecia at 15. Her powerful appearance on Monday night became one of the festival’s standout moments. Speaking openly about alopecia, she demonstrated some of her favourite wigs before revealing her bald head and encouraging people to “embrace the imperfections”, receiving a standing ovation. She is also founder of The Hair Loss Haven, which provides support, events and meet-ups for people

experiencing hair loss. Her prize package includes €25,000 worth of world travel, use of a Kia EV3, accommodation at Tralee’s Meadowlands Hotel and a Kerry adventure break.

Dáithí Ó Sé and Kathryn Thomas, concluding five days which saw Tralee welcome Roses and supporters from Ireland and around the world.

The result was announced live from MTU’s Kerry Sports Academy by

Dott Moriarty Rose & Rose Escort Reunion Night Celebration Event at The Rose Hotel The Rose Hotel was delighted to welcome returning Roses and Rose Escorts on Sunday, 16 August, for the annual Dott Moriarty Rose & Rose Escort Reunion Night, hosted by the Henggeler family.

The event has become a muchloved occasion for Roses and Rose Escorts to reconnect, renew friendships and reminisce about their own Festival experiences. This year’s reunion was the largest to date, with 250 guests attending. Among those present were former Roses of Tralee, along with three special reunion groups marking 30, 20 and 10 years since their Festival years in 1996, 2006 and 2016. Adding to the celebrations, 2025

Rose of Tralee Katelyn Cummins took time from her busy Festival schedule to join the gathering and meet returning Roses and Rose Escorts.

Guests were welcomed with a drink’s reception on arrival, followed by a delicious selection of finger food. A fantastic live band kept the celebrations going, with guests filling the dance floor and partying late into the night. The Dott Moriarty Rose & Rose Escort Reunion Night continues a special tradition of friendship and connection at The Rose Hotel, bringing together generations of people who share fond memories of their time in Tralee.

Kerry Set for Bumper National Heritage Week 2026

National Heritage Week returns to Kerry as part of Ireland’s largest annual heritage celebration, running from 15th–23rd August with more than 2,500 events nationwide, most free to attend. This year’s programme, an initiative of the Heritage Council, is the biggest in the event’s history, building on a recordbreaking 2025 that saw almost half a million people take part. The 2026 theme, “Heritage at Risk,” invites Kerry communities to explore and help safeguard traditions, skills, buildings, landscapes and habitats under threat. Locally, this could take in everything from historic sites and archaeological features to traditional

crafts, folklore and the Irish language. Minister of State Christopher O’Sullivan TD encouraged people to explore heritage in their own locality and consider their role in protecting it for future generations. Heritage Council chief executive Virginia Teehan praised the network of local Heritage Officers working with community groups county by county. Highlights include Heritage Open Doors, giving access to buildings not normally open to the public, Wild Child Day on 22nd August, and Water Heritage Day on 23rd August, celebrating Ireland’s rivers, lakes and coastline. Full Kerry listings are available at Heritageweek.ie.

Siamsa Tíre gets the Rose Escorts, Rose Buds & Rose Buddies dancing! Siamsa Tíre was delighted to put the Irish dancing skills of this year’s Rose Escorts, Rose Buds and Rose Buddies to the test on Sunday evening, following the spectacular Rose of Tralee 2026 Festival Parade. Following the parade, the Rose Buds and Rose Buddies, joined Justin Walsh, Choreographer and Community Engagement Manager at Siamsa Tíre for a lively introduction to céilí dancing. With so many talented young dancers among the group, they made the steps look wonderfully easy! Later, the Rose Escorts took to the floor with Justin, for a whistle-stop introduction to some of Riverdance’s

signature Irish dance moves. With a long-standing tradition of performing and teaching Irish dance, including performing in Michael Flatley’s Riverdance and Lord of the Dance, and with the National Folk Theatre of Ireland, Justin certainly knew how to put the Escorts through their paces! There were plenty of smiles, laughs and some impressive dancing, and, most importantly, great fun was had by all. We’re delighted to support this year’s Rose Buds, Rose Buddies and Escorts as part of our sponsorship of the Rose of Tralee 2026.

Young Curators Unveil Exciting LASTA Festival at Siamsa Tíre Siamsa Tíre has unveiled the programme for LASTA Festival 2026, a four-day celebration of creativity, culture and community taking place from October 1–4. Now in its sixth year, LASTA is a national festival created by young people, for young people, with this year’s programme at Siamsa Tíre curated by Antonia Gergely and Neil Moore Ryan. Their line-up reflects the interests of a new generation, exploring themes including the Irish language, creativity, wellbeing, music, fashion and film. The festival opens on Thursday, October 1, with the launch of Backspace, a visual arts exhibition showcasing emerging Irish artists, alongside Ag Samhlú Saoil Eile, a bilingual sound installation inspired

by Irish mythology and created through workshops with Scaoilte Theatre. On Friday, audiences can enjoy Anonn, an award-nominated one-person bilingual production exploring grief, loss and identity through dark humour and storytelling. Saturday’s programme includes a Vintage Pop-Up Shop by The Vintage Vault, followed by Piece of Mind, an interactive wellbeing event presented with Jigsaw Kerry. Film lovers can round off the day with a screening of the iconic Japanese animated classic Akira. The festival concludes on Sunday with an idea-generation workshop led by singer-songwriter Maria Kelly, an art therapy session with

psychotherapist Rebecca Verrall, and a closing concert by acclaimed bilingual singer and sean-nós performer AMANO, whose music blends traditional Irish song with contemporary folk and electronic influences. Free creative workshops for young people aged 16 to 24 will also take place in the weeks leading up to the festival, with participants contributing to the Ag Samhlú Saoil Eile installation. Siamsa Tíre CEO Angela Ryan Whyte said LASTA demonstrates the value of giving young people the opportunity to shape cultural programming, while the young curators said they hope the festival will bring people together and showcase Siamsa Tíre as a

welcoming space for creativity and community. The full programme and booking details are available at siamsatire.com.

Tralee Chamber AllianceONLY! Member Spotlight ADVERTISING DOESN’T COST... IT PAYS! GOOD NEWS in association The Tralee Advertiser ...Goodwith News Only!!!

Tralee Chamber Alliance Member Spotlight With ALMA GASTROBAR — A TASTE OF SPAIN IN THE HEART OF TRALEE Alma Gastrobar is the result of a shared passion for Spanish food, hospitality and entrepreneurship. Our five Spanish partners have spent the past five years working in the hospitality industry in Kerry, gaining valuable experience and a deep appreciation for the local community and the people who make this county such a welcoming place to live and work. After years of working for others, we decided to take the next step and create something of our own. Alma was born from the desire to bring our experience, our heritage and our love of Spanish gastronomy to the heart of Tralee. Our concept is simple: to take our guests on a culinary journey through Spain, exploring the flavours, traditions and character of different

regions through tapas and gourmet pintxos. From classic favourites such as tortilla española and patatas bravas to carefully crafted dishes with a modern touch, our menu celebrates both the roots and the evolution of Spanish cuisine. Food at Alma is designed to be shared, enjoyed and discovered. Our wine selection is an important part of the experience, featuring carefully chosen wines from Spain alongside selections from around the world. Curated by our Chef, the list is designed to complement the flavours of our tapas and offer our guests the opportunity to discover something new with every visit. For us, Alma is more than a restaurant. It is a meeting point between our Spanish heritage and our new home in Kerry. We are proud to have built our careers here

and even prouder to now contribute to Tralee’s growing food, hospitality and business community. Our aim is to create a place where

people can discover Spain through its food, wine and hospitality — while feeling very much at home.

Kerry Students Shine as Attention Turns to CAO Offers Kerry’s Leaving Cert students will , by all accounts , be celebrating another superb set of results, with the 2026 cohort receiving their grades from the State Examinations Commission (SEC) this Friday morning. Results will be released at 10am through the Candidate Self Service Portal and were also made available through schools. The county has a strong record when it comes to Leaving Cert achievement and securing places in Further, Tertiary and Higher Education, and this year’s students should maintain that tradition. While candidates should certainly take time to celebrate their achievements, attention must quickly turn to the next steps, with several important deadlines

approaching. CAO Round One offers will be released at 2pm on Wednesday, August 26, when thousands of applicants will learn whether they have secured their preferred college course. Competition remains strong. Latest CAO figures show 95,597 applicants this year, a significant increase from 89,308 in 2025. High-demand courses are again expected to require substantial points. However, with more than 54,000 places available, applicants have every reason to remain hopeful. Students considering viewing their examination scripts or appealing a grade should pay particular attention to SEC deadlines. The application windows are short and late

Bubble / box .

applications will not be accepted. The coming days are therefore about celebrating success while carefully considering all available options in education, training and employment. Best wishes to every Kerry student

receiving results and to all awaiting next Wednesday’s CAO offers. Billy Ryle is a Career Guidance Counsellor and Educational Commentator.

GOOD NEWS ONLY!

ADVERTISING DOESN’T COST... IT PAYS!

...Good News Only!!! TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER AUSTIN STACKS GAA CLUB NOTES Senior Championship - Round 2: A brilliant 2-16 to 1-19 draw away to Kenmare Shamrocks at Fr Breen Park in a cracking contest that could have gone either way. Stacks led by four early on before Kenmare hit a goal from the throw-in at the start of the second half to go four ahead. Cian Purcell goaled to put Stacks in front before Kenmare edged back in front with two-point frees. Ryan O’Driscoll then palmed home a goal to put Stacks in the driving seat before Kenmare levelled with a late two-point free and went a point up from the resulting kick out. With the game seemingly lost, Eoghan Carroll produced a moment of brilliant leadership to cut through the defence and level with the last kick of the game. The team’s resilience in Kenmare’s backyard was outstanding. Whether Stacks finish top or second in the group depends on how Kenmare get on against Templenoe on Sunday. Senior Ladies Championship - Round 1: A 5-13 to 0-12 defeat away to Cromane in Glenbeigh, with last year’s Junior All-Ireland Club finalists proving too strong. Cromane led 3-07 to 0-05 at half time with three first-half goals laying the foundation. Stacks threw everything at it but Cromane added two more goals in the last quarter to seal the win. Best wishes to Lara Flynn on recovery from a facial injury. Next up: home to Firies in Round 2 in Connolly Park on Sunday August 23rd at 12pm. U16 Girls - County League Division 3: A heartbreaking one-point defeat away to Listowel Emmets, 4-11 to 5-07, despite coming back from trailing 2-06 to 0-02 at half time to outscore Listowel by 5-05 to 2-05 in the second half. A tremendous second-half comeback that ultimately fell just short. Next up: home to Legion in the final round, Wednesday August 19th at 7:30pm. G4MO Festival Blitz: A superbly organised festival blitz at Connolly Park with eight teams participating across three pitches. A great day of football, fun and community spirit with a raffle fundraiser for Kerry Hospice. Thanks to all referees, volunteers and main sponsor Terry’s Butchers. Minor Boys: The championship campaign began with a tough opening against East Kerry in Cordal, missing three county players. Next up: home to Dr Crokes on Thursday at 7pm in Connolly Park. All support welcome. U13 Boys - Rose Cup: Austin Stacks won the Rose of Tralee Cup, topping a tough group before defeating Kerins O’Rahillys in the semi-final and Ballyduff

24

in the final. Well done to all involved. NA GAEIL GAA CLUB NOTES Senior Men’s Club Championship: A narrow 1-13 to 1-10 defeat at home to Milltown/Castlemaine in what was a competitive and dramatic game. Na Gaeil led by five points approaching the midpoint of the second half before a black card reduced them to 14 men and Milltown/Castlemaine levelled the game. Na Gaeil regained the lead before Milltown/Castlemaine finished with a goal and two points in injury time to steal the win. Senior Ladies Championship - Round 1: A fine 1-11 to 0-05 win over Clounmacon/Moyvane to open the championship campaign. Na Gaeil led 4 points to 2 at half time before Jadyn Lucey goaled early in the second half and the team pulled clear with a strong second-half display. Next up: away to Southern Gaels in Round 2 next Sunday. Mothers and Others: Na Gaeil are setting up a Mothers and Others Gaelic football team again after a break of a few years. Contact Janice on 0858424939, Helen on 087-7631977 or Susan on 086-3977307 for more information. BALLYMAC GAA CLUB NOTES U14 Boys - Central Region Semi-Final: A tremendous battle against Dingle ended in heartbreak after extra time, 3-17 to 4-11. Ballymac were level at full time after coming back to tie the game in the final minutes despite being down to 14 men. In extra time goalkeeper Oisín Priestley produced an outstanding double save to deny a Dingle penalty before tired legs eventually told in a classic contest. The club is incredibly proud of this group’s performance and conduct throughout. U16 Girls - County League Round 3: A 5-12 to 8-07 defeat to Knock/ Brosna in Knocknagoshel in a highscoring contest. Ballymac led at half time but Knock/Brosna’s goal-scoring power proved decisive in the second half. Grace Kelly was forced off with a knee injury. A must-win game against Milltown/Castlemaine next Wednesday in Ballymac.

ST PATS GAA NOTES Seniors: Defeated by Keel in Round 2 of the Junior Premier, with Keel proving stronger in the second half. Best wishes to Niall McCarthy who picked up an injury. Next up: away to Duagh in Round 3 on Saturday August 22nd at 3:30pm. U13s - Rose Cup: Competed well at the Rose Cup in Ballyrickard with tough games against St Senans and Kerins O’Rahillys before finishing with a fine win over Milltown/Castlemaine. U14 Boys: A convincing win over Ardfert in Blennerville last week. U12 Girls: A tough physical game on August 9th with the U10 girls stepping up brilliantly to help out. Next game at home against Milltown/Castlemaine in Blennerville at 6:40pm. U10 Girls: Next Go Games round at Dr Crokes at 6:40pm. Congratulations to St Brendan’s Minors on their Round 1 Championship win over Kenmare District, including club players Darragh Murphy, Michael Enright, Rodhán Cullloo and Jack Costello, with Derek O’Sullivan as manager. Best of luck to the Blennerville/Ballyard U10 boys at the Community Games in Carlow on Sunday August 23rd. TRALEE PARNELLS HURLING AND CAMOGIE CLUB Junior Hurlers: A winning start to the County Junior Championship with a 3-16 to 3-10 away win over Abbeydorney. Two goals from Liam O’Connell and a late Niall Cassidy goal sealed a deserved victory. Next up:

home to St Brendan’s C. Underage Camogie Blitzes: A brilliant morning at Páirc na Darach hosting U8 and U10 blitzes with three visiting clubs. Twelve games played in total with great performances from all our girls. Thanks to referees Anna, Emma, Shauna and Donnacha. Rose Cup Camogie: The U13 girls participated in the Rose Cup, playing games against Ballyduff, Abbeykillix and Ballybrown. The girls also had the wonderful experience of meeting the Roses and their escorts. Thanks to Rose Travel for sponsoring new jerseys for the occasion. Senior Camogie: Recruiting new players of all levels. Contact 085 135 5566 for more information. KERRY FC - SSE AIRTRICITY MEN’S FIRST DIVISION/FAI CUP Kerry FC’s FAI Cup run came to an end with a 4-0 defeat away to Sligo Rovers at The Showgrounds on Saturday, though the scoreline flattered the hosts. Kerry were arguably the better side for significant periods and created several good chances but Sligo took the lead through Cian Kavanagh in the 14th minute before Alex Nolan converted a penalty. Despite Kerry dominating much of the second half without finding the net, Sligo added late goals from Carl McHugh and Kaiyne Woolery to make it 4-0. Kerry now refocus on the league with nine games remaining in the 2026 season and a home game against UCD AFC next Friday at Mounthawk Park.

U10 Boys: Participated in the wellorganised Séamus Weldon Memorial Fossa Blitz against 40 clubs, finishing in the top eight. A great experience for the lads. Mothers and Others: A special day as Sugrue Designs, represented by James Sugrue, came onboard as sponsor and presented the team with a new set of jerseys. A great home game against Dingle Mothers and Others followed in wonderful community spirit.
