WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... BILLY’S NEW BOOK IS GRAND, SAYS MARTIN!

From Fenit bathing slip to the High Court - A five year journey of honour!

Martin Ferris TD will official launch Billy Ryle’s new book - From Fenit bathing slip to the High Court - A five year journey of honour! - in the Grand Hotel, Tralee, Co. Kerry at 8pm on Monday, 8th May 2017. Deputy Ferris, who is a native of the Fenit area, played a significant role in saving the bathing slip in Fenit from demolition by the Department of Communications Marine and

Natural Resources in 2004. In fact, the bathing slip would have been irrevocably lost to the swimming community of Kerry and the thousands of visitors who holiday in the region annually without the proactive support of Kerry’s national and local public representatives.

Written in first person narrative form, the author tells the glorious story of Tralee Swimming Club (1952 – 2001) and its pivotal position in the sporting and social life of the community. He outlines the reasons for the untimely dissolution of the club on 4th October 2001.

The author explains why the State was determined to demolish the bathing slip in Fenit and how a public campaign was organised to save a priceless leisure facility in the picturesque village. The campaign was waged in a tenacious and persistent

manner against the might of the State from 2001 to 2004 and took the author into the corridors of power in Dublin. The three year campaign captured the imagination and the overwhelming support of the general public and was wholeheartedly backed by the county’s politicians, sports clubs and community groups. The campaign to save the bathing slip in Fenit was finally brought to a successful conclusion in the meeting chamber of Kerry County Council on the 18th October, 2004.

Billy Ryle also provides the reader with a fascinating insight into the legal case which took five years to run its course and went all the way to the High Court on the 16th October 2006. From beginning to end the book provides the reader with a captivating narrative of a small rural swimming community’s battle for its bathing slip and its good name.

Copies of the book will be available at the launch in the Grand Hotel on Monday night, 8th May at a nominal price of €10. Any net profit earned by the book in 2017 will be divided equally between Spa/ Fenit Youth Club at Fenit Parish Centre, Fenit, Tralee, in which area the author lives and Austin Stacks Juvenile GAA Club in his native Rock, Tralee, where Billy had very happy days and acquired values that stood him in good stead throughout his life.

SHAWS DEPARTMENT STORES ANNOUNCE CHARITY PARTNERSHIP WITH IRISH HOSPICE FOUNDATION

Shaws Department Stores has named the Irish Hospice Foundation (IHF) as its charity partner for 2017 and will help raise vital funds for the IHF’s Nurses for Night Care programme providing homecare nursing for people nearing end of life.

Shaws will kick start the partnership on May 8th with a fun week-long window display competition in each of its 16 stores and will host a second fundraising event ‘IHF Yellow Day’ in September. The partnership was announced after a store wide staff vote. Jonathan Shaw, Managing Director of Shaws commented: “We are very pleased to be able to announce our charity partnership with The Irish Hospice Foundation for 2017,and are thrilled that we will be able to help them with the outstanding work they do in communities right across the country.”

Collection boxes, pins and assorted IHF merchandise will be made available in Shaws Department Stores across Ireland throughout the year, as will a selection of decorations, reindeer food, and greeting

cards in time for Christmas.

Helen McVeigh, IHF Director of Fundraising said: “We are delighted that Shaws have chosen us as their Charity partner following a staff vote.

The support of the Shaws staff and customers will fund programmes such as our Nurses for Night Care service.

This programme is one of the most important initiatives we ever undertook, giving families more choices as nursing is now available in every county across Ireland.

“This care is for people with illnesses other than cancer such as dementia, heart disease or motor neurone diseases, helping them fulfil their wish to die at home surrounded by their loved ones. Demand grows annually and about €720,000 is needed to fund the service in 2017. This free service is funded solely through public donations and every €40 covers an hour of night care. Last year, we provided over 1,700 nights of care to 540 families. We are excited to share our message with Shaws customers in the heart of our communities.”

Pictured above at the launch of the partnership at the Shaws Dun Laoghaire store from left to right are; David Carthy, (Store Manager) Simon Hawkins (Marketing Co-ordinator) Malgorzata Pietrzkiewicz (store staff member) and Helen McVeigh (The Irish Hospice Foundation).

How can I restrict my kids online?

There is a new product called iKydz which you connect to your router, you can download an app on your phone in which you can use to control the device. For example, at mealtimes, you can push a button that kills the internet access for all devices, and at other times you can restrict usage – a games console that can only access the internet for two hours on a weekend, or removing a laptop’s wi-fi access after 10pm. Perfect for parents, a nightmare for kids. The best thing about this device is it’s easy to setup and there is an online tutorial available on their website if you run into difficulty. Just make sure you delete all your devices from your existing network. iKydz can be purchase from Hugh Cullotys.

How can I stop spam emails?

Unfortunately, you can’t stop spam, once a company gets your email then they have you, so what can you do? Well, blocking the email address will not work because spammers change their email address every day and they can also make you think it’s coming from a friend. I use a Gmail account and Office 365 account which seems to be very good in filtering spam emails, it’s not perfect but it helps. Should the spam become unbearable then the only choice you have is to create a new email address and don’t put it on websites you don’t know, use a temporary email address from https://www.mailinator.com/

Don’t enable pictures on spam, The reason that pictures are disabled by default on most spam filtered email is that the mere act of enabling an image from a spam email so that it can be displayed will alert the spammer that they have a real email address.

Hello my beautiful friends, I hope you’re all having a fab week!

As you all know, this week I’m home in Tralee so I’ve had a lot of spare time on my hands. So first stop was the amazing House Of Glamour to get my nails done.

I went for a nude ombre effect with mermaid dust on top and I am absolutely obsessed with them. I was in House Of Glamour at 9am on a Wednesday and it was super busy all morning with nail appointments, some of the best in the business definitely. I have had my nails done up in Dublin a few times and I’m not lying when I say that House Of Glamour is a step above than the others. My nails always come out perfect and last at least 4 weeks. House Of Glamour also offers pedicures, shellac, makeup application, waxing, hair colouring and styling and so much more! If you haven’t paid them a visit yet, you should! Jurga of 5 Star Beauty, my favourite brow queen, will also be in the salon on the 11th and 15th of May!

Because we had such amazing weather this week, I got inspired for Festival Season. I created this Gold & Pink sparkly

festival look and I love how it turned out! If you want to enquire about festival makeup appointments or regular makeup email me at bexblahbeauty@gmail.com for dates and availability.

BEXBLAHFITNESS!

HELLO MY STRONG STRONG FRIENDS, I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING THE MOST AMAZING WEEK! FOR THE LAST TWO WEEKS I HAVE BEEN HOME IN TRALEE AS OPPOSED TO BEING IN DUBLIN.

So while I’m home I’m training in The Brandon Gym. There are many gyms in Tralee all different shapes and sizes which offer a range of different services. But The Brandon is the most accessible to me and as I’m not driving at the moment it’s easiest for me to get there… I’m also a sucker for a warehouse style gym with a stairmaster!

Here is my experience so far…

If you didn’t know, The Brandon Gym has undergone a huge transformation in the last year. It is a hotel gym but with a huge ‘warehouse gym’ feel whilst still having that friendly atmosphere.

The first thing I was super impressed by is how well equipped the gym is, any machine or piece of equipment you could possibly need, they have. From battle ropes to boxing bags, stairmasters

to squat racks and even TRX bands, The Brandon has it all. While it is well equipped, some of the equipment there is only one of, which I never had a problem with as I didn’t particularly go at peak hours, but because there is so much varied things to do in there, there is lots of things to do while you’re waiting for a machine to be free!

The gym is also very big and spacious, it never felt like someone was nearly on top of me whilst I was working out, which is a huge bonus. There are plenty of open spaces to workout in too if you are the type who prefers do their own set away from the other equipment.

Now to talk about the atmosphere in the gym… First off, the music… I have never been to a gym in which I left out my headphones on purpose to workout to the gym music. They have a fantastic playlist on and its loud enough to be heard but not so loud that it’s offensive if you get me. There’s also always at least one trainer on the gym floor which is great to see, they’re very approachable and always on hand to help with any questions. Everyone I encountered was always super friendly.

The Brandon also sells NutriQuick meals and Kinetica products such as protein, preworkout and protein bars. I wanted to sample a few of the meals but unfortunately they were sold out so I might hopefully get some this week to try - I have heard great things though.

Now for classes, I myself didn’t attend any as classes aren’t really my thing - I prefer getting through my own workout. But… I witnessed a spin class yesterday and it was unlike anything I had ever seen before, it looked insane!! I actually considered doing a spin class after seeing that. This wasn’t your average spin class, as well as spinning on the bike, the instructor had them off the bike doing laps of the gym and side planks! Definitely a workout to get all of that fat burned! The Brandon have also started offering

one to one boxing classes, which sounds right up my street, I love boxing and find the one to one would benefit me more than a boxing class.

As well as all of the above, The Brandon has a pool, sauna, steamroom and jacuzzi.

Now for my small critique - The Brandon doesn’t promote whether or not they offer a ‘Pay As You Go’ option for the general public, there are a lot of younger people in Tralee who are away in college and only home every other weekend or people like myself who are living in another part of the country and home for a few weeks, Pay As You Go options are ideal for these types of people. When you look it up online, not many of the gyms in Tralee mention whether or not they offer this service, but if they do, they should have it mentioned somewhere on their website or social media accounts.

The Brandon has social media accounts, Instagram - @brandon_ hotel_leisure_centre Facebook - @ BrandonHotelLeisureCentre, they wouldn’t be the most active on those accounts. They actually have a special offer going on until May 31st, if you update your existing 3, 6 or 12 month membership or purchasing a new one in May, you get the remainder of May free! Amazing offer!! A huge thanks to The Brandon Gym for having me the past week.

Now for all MyProtein fans out there or anyone looking to try MyProtein. If you are a new customer or set up a new account and spend over 30 euro, use my code to get 25% off! ‘REBECCA-R5OS’. You’re welcome.

SPICY TOMATO SAUCE

• tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil

• 6 garlic cloves, minced

• 1 large fresh red chile, minced

• 4 large plum tomatoes, chopped

• 1 tablespoon tomato paste

• 1/3 cup water

• 1 1/2 tablespoons chopped tarragon

• Salt FISH CAKES

• 3/4 pound potatoes, peeled and cut into 1-inch chunks

• 1/4 cup instant polenta

• 1 1/2 pounds skinless cod or halibut fillets, cut into 1-inch chunks

• 4 garlic cloves, minced

• 2 tablespoons chopped parsley

• 2 tablespoons chopped coriander

• 2 teaspoons salt

• 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cumin

• 1 large egg, lightly beaten

• 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper

• 2 tablespoons rapeseed oil

METHOD

In a large pan heat the olive oil. Add the garlic and chile and cook over moderately low heat until fragrant, about 3 minutes. Add the tomatoes and cook over moderate heat until thickened, about 10 minutes. Stir in the tomato paste and water and simmer for 2 minutes longer. Add the tarragon and season with salt

In a saucepan, cover the potatoes with water and bring to a boil. Boil over moderately high heat until tender, about 7 minutes. Drain well and lightly mash the potatoes with a fork. Spread the polenta in a pie plate. In a food processor, combine the fish, garlic, parsley, coriander, salt, cumin, egg and crushed red pepper and pulse until the fish is coarsely chopped. Transfer to a bowl and fold in the potatoes. Form the mixture into twelve 2-inch cakes (1/2 inch thick); coat with the polenta.

In a large nonstick pan, heat 1 tablespoon of the oil. Add half of the fish cakes and pan-fry over moderately high heat until golden brown and just cooked through, about 3 minutes per side. Transfer to a platter. Repeat with the remaining 1 tablespoon of oil and fish cakes, adjusting the heat if the cakes get too dark. Serve the fish cakes hot or at room temperature with the warm tomato sauce.

KERRY STUDENTS TO COOK UP A STORM AT APPRENTICE CHEF FINALE

Next week on Thursday 11 May students from secondary schools across Munster will have their knives out to complete the final service in the 2016/2017 Flogas Ireland and Failte Ireland sponsored Apprentice Chef Programme.

Since October 2016 over 500 students have enjoyed a series of demonstrations and workshops as part of the programme which aims to promote the importance of healthy eating to enhance physical and mental wellbeing and encourage young people to consider a culinary career to help combat the current chef crisis in Ireland.

The finalists will enjoy an authentic professional kitchen experience and serve restaurant standard dishes to a panel of judges. 7 of the students in this year’s final attend secondary schools in Killarney, Tralee, Kenmare and Cahersiveen. Having been mentored by accomplished Kerry chefs Mark Doe and Louise Brosnan, who recently completed a stage in Belfast with Danni Barry, Ireland’s only female Michelin Star chef, and supported by nutritional therapist, Susie Cox, each dish presented by the students will have a “Good Mood Food” influence.

This is the fifth year of the Apprentice Chef Programme which was established by Mark Doe of Just Cooking Cookery School in Firies and Mark Murphy, senior lecturer in Culinary Arts at IT Tralee in 2012.

Co-founder Mark Doe said, “Since we started the Apprentice Chef, 2,000 secondary school students have attended workshops and cookery demonstrations. In our inaugural year we had a modest cohort of students from Kerry and Limerick. In year 2 students from Co Cork participated and for the first time this year, we were delighted to collaborate with Waterford IT and students from Tipperary, Wexford and Waterford have joined the programme. We are continuously impressed by the standard of dishes produced and this inspires us to build on the programme’s success and we will continue in our efforts to take it to national level. We are indebted to our sponsors, Flogas Ireland and Failte Ireland, for their support to date and we look forward to future collaboration.” All finalists receive a specially commissioned Ambri chopping board, a Just Cooking cookbook and their Apprentice Chef monogrammed chef uniform. The Supreme Apprentice Chef will also receive a set of professional knives, €1000 equipment for their school, a year’s subscription to Easyfood Magazine and a styling session at Easyfood Magazine HQ this summer. In addition, the specially commissioned perpetual trophy will be presented to the Supreme Apprentice Chef.

just incredible to think that one of our customers has just won a half million euro! There is great excitement in the shop this morning as people come down to check their tickets and to join in the celebrations! We are a local community shop with very loyal customers so we are absolutely over the moon with their win,’ she said.

There was no winner of Tuesday’s €66,014,926 million EuroMillions jackpot.

Earlier this year , O’Shea’s, another Gala Shop, in Blennerville. also sold a winning ticket for €154,280 in the Euromillions.

LAUGHTER ....THE BEST MEDICINE !

AN OLD LADY GOES TO THE DOCTOR

Doctor,” she says, “I keep farting, but my farts are silent and odorless. In fact I have farted 20 times since I was in your office but since my farts are noiseless and do not smell you have not noticed.” The doctor gives the lady some pills and instructs her to return after one week. One week later, the lady is back at the doctor’s office. “I do not know what was in those pills you gave me, Doctor,” said the lady, “But my farts, though still silent, now stink like hell.” The doctor smiles in satisfaction. “Excellent! Now that we have cleared up your sinuses, let’s work on your hearing.

THREE ENGINEERS AND THREE LAWYERS GO TO A CONFERENCE

Three engineers and three lawyers go to a conference. They have a fixed budget and may keep everything they do not spend. The lawyers purchase three train tickets, the engineers only one. When asked about this, the engineers just say: “Wait, and see”. In the train, when they see the conductor getting down the compartment, the three engineers get up and go to the restroom, they barely fit in. The conductor arrives and knocks on the restroom door: “Ticket, please”. The engineers slide the ticket under the door, the conductor punches it and slides it back. The lawyers are amazed that the engineers saved so much money and decide do the same on the way back. So they buy one ticket. This time, the engineers do not buy any ticket at all! “Don’t you need at least one ticket”, the lawyers shout. The engineers just say again “Wait, and see”. Back in the train, when they hear the conductor, the engineers press into one restroom, the lawyers into the other one. Just before the conductor arrives, one of the engineer slips out of the restroom, knocks on the door of the lawyer’s restroom: “Ticket, please”.

TWO PAKISTANI BEGGARS IN LONDON

Two beggars in London Ali and Habib are beggars. They beg in different areas of London ... Habib begs just as long as Ali does, but only collects £2 to £3

every day. Ali brings home a suitcase FULL of £10 notes, drives a Mercedes, lives in a mortgage-free house and has a lot of money to spend. Habib asks Ali :- ‘I work just as long and hard as you do but how is it that you bring home a suitcase full of £10 notes every day?’ Ali says, ‘Look at your sign, what does it say’? Habib’s sign reads ‘I have no work, a wife and 6 kids to support’. Ali says No wonder you only get £2- £3 Habib says... ‘So what does your sign say’? Ali shows Habib his sign.... It reads, ‘I only need another £10 to move back to Pakistan’.

ON HIS DEATH BED, AN OLD JEW SAYS TO HIS WIFE:

Oh, Sarah, when the shop burned down you were right beside me, no? - Sure I was, Moshe.

When the Nazis drove us out of our beloved Deutschland you were beside me again, no? - I was, Moshe. And now you’re at my death bed, aren’t you? - I am, darling. I’m starting to think you’re bad luck, Sarah.

A MAN RETURNS HOME FROM THE DOCTORS AND TELLS HIS WIFE THE DOCTOR SAID HE ONLY HAS 24 HOURS TO LIVE.

Given this prognosis the man asks his wife and naturally she agrees and they make love.

About six hours later the husband turns to his wife and says “Honey, you know now I only have 18 hours to live. Could we please do it one more time?”

Of course the wife agrees and they do it again.

Later as the man gets into bed he looks at his watch and realizes he only has 8 hours left. He touches his wife’s shoulder and says “Honey please... just one more time before I die” She says “Of course, dear” and they make love for the third time. After this , the wife rolls over and falls asleep. The man, however, worried about his impending death tosses and turns until he’s down to 4 hours.

He taps his wife, who rouses.

“Honey, I only have four more hours. Do you think we could...” At this point, the wife sits up and says “Listen, I have to get up in the morning. You don’t!”

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2

Director: James Gunn

Starring: Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Kurt Russell

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 continues just after the events of the first film. The Guardians are now well-known for the galaxy saving episode against Ronan the Accuser. They soon seem to make enemies with everyone they encounter and after a fight with the Sovereign alien race, they land on a deserted planet and meet Ego (Kurt Russell), Peter “Star Lord” Quill’s father. The group now have to deal with their enemies, old and new.

James Gunn’s original Guardians reached new height for the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) showing that anything Marvel makes is gold (and a financial goldmine making 780 million worldwide). While the sequel doesn’t reach the heights of its predecessor. it is still a highly enjoyable one and expands the universe we fell in love with in the first film. The film brings back the original film’s anti-heroes and introduces some new exciting characters too. Drax (Dave Bautista) and Baby Groot (Vin Diesel) are the stand out characters and steal every scene they appear in. The visuals in the film are really something to behold. It’s a pleasure to behold on the large cinema screen as it explodes in a sea of colour and interesting alien characters. A lot of superhero films are criticised for the dark visuals, but it does not apply to the hyper-visuals in this movie. The film also boasts a new amazing soundtrack similar to the first film; this was another reason the first film was so unique. The music accompanies the scenes in the movie perfectly. This is overall a highly-enjoyable film full of amazing visuals.

Mr. Movies Fact:

Dave Bautista’s make-up for his character Drax took 40 minutes to apply daily. For the filming of first movie it took more than 4 hours.

COISTE NA NÓG 50 YEAR CELEBRATION PARADE A CASUALTY OF TOWN CENTRE WORKS!

Here is a letter Tralee Advertiser received during the week from the Secretary of Tralee Town Board explaining why this Parade celebrating our under-age footballers and hurlers wont proceed now on May 7th .

“A Chairde, Coiste na nÓg as you may know is celebrating 50 years in existence this year. Parades are being held in the larger urban areas throughout the county on May 7th to celebrate this occasion of our under-age footballers and hurlers.

Tralee was naturally to be one of these venues.

Despite best efforts on behalf

of The Tralee Town Board, who have been in regular contact over the last number of weeks with Kerry County Council, The Local Gardaí & Willis Insurance c/o Croke Park, it has proved unsafe and ill-advised to hold the parade in Tralee.

Tralee Town Board has been advised not to hold the parade for Health and Safety Reasons due to the current works being undergone in the Town Centre & the natural increased pressure this is placing on the main arteries around the town.

The Town Board is disappointed that this has come to pass but is determined to do its best to

50 GOOD JOBS FOR TRALEE!

An €11.5m investment by US manufacturer BorgWarner into their Monavalley plant has just recently been announced . Sinn Féin MEP Liadh Ní Riada has welcomed the announcement of the 50 new jobs at this engineering plant in Tralee. The Ireland South MEP said the €11.5m investment by US manufacturer BorgWarner into their Monavalley plant was a testament to the people of the area.

“BorgWarner, a world leader in its field, has had a presence in

Tralee in one shape or another for three decades now,” she said.

“It is a testament to the people of Tralee that this global giant, who could move their operations anywhere, continue to reinvest in the area time and again. It’s here they have found the motivated, educated workforce and the supporting community that makes companies like theirs so successful.

“This is great news, not just for the 220 people who will be

this year.

Let’s all hope that the restructuring of traffic-flow in and out of the Tralee Town Centre, once completed, continues to allow parades to be conducted

working here when these new positions are filled, but for the entire community.”

AN BORD PLEANÁLA GRANTS PLANNING PERMISSION TO LISTOWEL SOLAR FARM

Terra Solar this week welcomed the decision by An Bord Pleanála to grant permission for the company to develop the company’s first solar farm in Kerry at Ballygrenane near Listowel.

Andre Fernon, Director, Terra Solar said; “We are very pleased that An Bord Pleanála has given due consideration to our project and has granted us planning permission for the solar farm at Ballygrenane. We’ve designed our solar farm to have minimal impact on the environment and on the local community in Ballygrenane and we are committed to

developing the solar farm responsibly. We will continue to engage with the local community as we progress this project.”

Solar power is one of the cleanest sources of energy and has minimal impact on the environment as it does not emit any pollution when it is produced or consumed. The solar panels at the Ballygrenane Solar Farm will be fixed in position on ground mounted frames. This means there is minimal ground disturbance during construction and sheep will be able to graze on the land

once the solar farm becomes operational. No noise is generated by solar panels and because they will be a maximum of 2.8 metres (approx. 9 ft) high, they will be rarely visible above the existing hedgerows and trees on the site.

Mr. Fernon said that construction of the solar farm is expected to start during 2019, depending on when ESB Networks connects the solar farm to the national grid. The

solar farm at Ballygrenane will generate enough electricity to power 1,200 homes and will remove 1,800 tonnes of carbon emissions from the atmosphere in Co Kerry every year.

DIESEL SCRAPPAGE SCHEME - DRIVERS TO BE OFFERED HUGE CASH REWARD TO DITCH ‘DIRTY’ CARS

DIESEL drivers may soon be forced to scrap their old diesel car in a bid to reduce air pollution in the UK. After months of deliberation the Government is on the cusp of confirming a diesel scrappage scheme in the UK to remove the most polluting diesel cars from the roads. Prime Minister Theresa May has overruled two cabinet ministers and is now insisting on a scrappage scheme being introduced, where diesel drivers will be offered up to £2,000 for their car. Ministers are set to unveil a plan to tackle air pollution to comply with a court demand over the next week. A ‘toxin tax’ on diesel cars, which is to affect cars entering 10 cities around the UK, is also expected to be announced. The Prime Minister has insisted on a scheme to offer drivers compensation to swap their old diesel vehicles for a more environmentally friendly one. She said: “But I’m very conscious of the fact that past governments have encouraged people to buy diesel cars and we need to take that into account when we’re looking at what we do in the future.” Any proposed scheme should be targeted and proportionate Commons Environment Committee chair and Tory MP Neil Parish The new scrappage scheme could however be limited to just the most polluted cities in the UK to begin with.

F1 LEGEND FELIPE MASSA PLEDGES SUPPORT FOR TEEN RACER

Formula One legend Felipe Massa has posted a message of support for teen racer Billy Monger after he lost both his lower legs in a high-speed smash. Massa, who has competed in more than 250 Formula One races, urged members of the public to get behind a crowd-funding appeal to support the badly injured 17-year-old. The 35-year-old Brazilian, who has driven for Ferrari and Williams, said on Instagram alongside a photo of Billy: “This boy Billy Monger had a huge accident in an F4 British championship and had to amputate both legs. “Let’s help him, I’ll help him as much as I can.”

The “gifted” teenager was involved in a high-speed smash while racing at Donington Park in Leicestershire recently . He was airlifted to hospital after remaining trapped in his vehicle for more than 90 minutes after the disaster. Despite medics’ best efforts, the teenager has lost both of his lower legs, according to his fundraising page. He now faces a “huge challenge to recover and return to a full and active life” following the devastating crash. The JustGiving page had a target of £260,000 but it has so far pulled in a massive £280,000.

UK MOTORISTS WARNED TO UPDATE SATNAVS NOW - OR RISK A £1,000 PENALTY FINE

Sat-nav users are being urged to update their devices as soon as possible to avoid being slapped with new speeding fines.

On Monday 24 April, new rules kick in across the country, meaning those who drive above the limit will not only be handed three points on their licence, but also a fine of up to 150% of their weekly income.

The guidelines have been brought in by the sentencing council to give stricter powers to district judges and magistrates to make drivers “think twice” on the road. However, it’s not just dangerous drivers that could be at risk.According to USwitch, those who heavily rely on satnavs could face huge fines from today if their device is not up to date.

A report found that 78% of drivers now rely on satnavs and smartphones for advice on speed limits - but only 58% of these users regularly update their devices. This means they’re not only missing out on new road layout changes, but also speed limit changes. A further fifth of motorists (18%) say they’ve driven dangerously – for instance driving the wrong way down a one-way street or needing to make a sharp U-turn to get back on track, as a result of receiving the wrong information from their device.

Even worse, one in six (17%) say their satnav has given them the wrong speed limit.

NUIG STUDY PROMPTS CHANGES TO KERRY JELLYFISH STING ADVICE

For nearly a decade, the standard practice in Kerry for treating stings by the Portuguese man o’ war jellyfish (Physalia physalis) is to rinse with seawater and then apply ice. However, in a new study published last week, scientists from NUI Galway have found those measures are actually among the worst things to do if stung.

Collaborating with jellyfish sting experts from the University of Hawai‘i –Mānoa, the NUI Galway scientists re-evaluated which commonly recommended first aid actions (such as rinsing with seawater) are the most effective for Physalia stings. Their results, published in the international journal Toxins, overturn the current advice, and show that the best first aid is to rinse with vinegar, to remove tentacles and then immerse in 45°C (113°F) hot water (or apply a hot pack) for 45 minutes. There are two species of

Physalia, the Portuguese man o’ war (Physalia physalis) which occurs in the Atlantic, and the bluebottle (Physalia utriculus) which occurs in the Pacific. Both species are among the most recognisable stinging jellyfish with their bright blue tentacles and colorful inflated floating sails. Just last September, armadas of these painful stingers came ashore in Ireland.

Taxonomically speaking, the Portuguese man o’ war is not a true jellyfish but a siphonophore, a closely related group of colonial animals.

Dr Tom Doyle, Lecturer in Zoology from the School of Natural Sciences at NUI Galway, said: “We had unprecedented numbers washing up from Cork to Donegal last September. Thankfully we had very few reported stings given the time of year. However, if this event had occurred during the summer months, then we

may have had hundreds of stings. Our new evidencebased research conclusively shows that the best first aid for a man o’ war sting is rinsing with vinegar or a Sting No More Spray, developed by the University of Hawai‘i – Mānoa, followed by the immersion of the injured area in hot water or the application of a hot pack.”

Dr Doyle met Dr Yanagihara at a jellyfish conference in Japan and together they proposed a project to the International Fulbright Specialist program, and Dr Yanagihara was

TRALEE PARNELL’S U-14’S HURLERS REACH FÉILE FINALS

Tralee Parnell’s Under 14 team came of age on 1st May at a sun drenched Feile C final in Abbedorney. Parnell’s had edged their opponents, South Kerry, by the narrowest of margins the previous Saturday in the qualifying round and a closely fought encounter was anticipated.

The pre-match warm up saw Parnell’s display a level of intensity rarely seen at this level and it was clear from the offset that Parnell’s were focused on reaching the National finals in June.

The Parnell’s players battled ferociously from the throw in and were a goal up within

minutes thanks to a well taken effort by Graham Sheehy. Parnell’s dominated every area of the pitch scoring 4-8 and containing South Kerry to a single score in the first half. The second half started where the first left off with Tadgh Reen winning the ball from the throw in and setting up another Parnell’s attack. Unfortunately for South Kerry they didn’t perform to their potential in the second half and the final score of 5-13 to 1-0 doesn’t do justice to a team that brought the previous two contests down to the wire.

Parnell’s had an unprecedented 9 different

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR

STACKS DO WHAT’S NEEDED BUT ITS NERVOUS TIMES FOR RAHILLYS:

Austin Stacks will be breathing a little easier after they defeated neighbours Kerins O’Rahillys in the Garvey’s Supervalu Senior Football Championship Relegation Playoff Round 1.

Stacks always looked to be the better side and led from early on which did not bode well for their opponents as they had the wind. By half time the Black and Amber led 1-07 to 0-5 thanks mainly to a Shane O’Callaghan goal.

Rahillys did have a great chance to close the gap on the brink of the short whistle when Con Barrett was fouled in the squad. However evergreen multi-code keeper David Hennessy made a great save from Barry John Keane’s penalty.

Stacks blistering start to the second half ended any hopes of a Rahilly’s comeback and even with 14 players Stacks ran out 1-15 to 0-09 winners.

Rahilly’s will now turn their thoughts to defeating Dingle of Kilcummin in a huge game for the club.

D DAY DEJA VU FOR KERRY HURLERS:

One of the strange quirks of sport is that sometimes teams can be thrown together on multiple occasions over a short period. For example the Kerry u17 soccer side are set to travel to Cobh Wanderers this Sunday in the League. So who did they draw in the Cup in mid-week – yes away to Cobh.

For the Kerry hurlers it’s Laois that again hold their faith in their hands. Laois defeated Kerry by the minimum in the League relegation game but now the Kingdom have a great chance to get revenge and if they will probably be into a Leinster quarter final against Wexford. Having lost, some say surprisingly, to Westmeath the previous week Kerry against went on the road and took on Meath is a rain sodden

Mullingar.

But it was obvious from the start that Kerry were well up for the challenge and were ahead from early on. Meath adopted a physical approach and were over the top from early on and were reduced to 14 players mid-way through the first half. By the end of the opening period Kerry led 12 points to 5. Kerry opened the gap to 10 points in the second half but credit to Meath they did stage a fight back with the help of a penalty and the gap at one stage was down two. But Kerry were not to be denied and won the game 0-20 to 2-12 thanks mainly to their first half display and their desire not to lose their opening two round robin games. They had many good performances on the day and hopefully they can repeat the same level of performance when they take on Laois at home in two weeks.

While it is not easy for supporters to travel two weeks in a row you would have expected enough hurling fans to want to travel to fill a bus! But that’s history now – let’s home as many as possible come to the Austin Stack Park to cheer them to a win and we will see where that takes them as its still possible three teams can finish on 4 points.

BALLYMAC NEWS:

There was good news for the Ballymac club this week as Sean Og’s Bar has been announced as the sponsor of the Ballymac Senior Ladies. Sean Og’s Johnny McElligott presented the Ladies with a new set of jersey’s which they wore for the first time in their game at home to Moyvane/ Clounmacon. The visitors have been together for a number of years and ran out 5-13 to 2-5 winners despite a good overall display by the Ballymac Ladies. The u16’s hosted neighbours John Mitchels in the Central Division secured a valuable win as they needed to start gaining points if

they want to reach the semi-finals. Here the final result was Ballymac 1-19 to John Mitchels 4-06.

In that semi-final they lost out to Ardefert 3-11 to 1-07. The boys deserved to be closer and the awarding of a controversial goal against them certainly upset their focus for a large part of the second half.

The u14 Boys went down to Laune Rangers A 5-14 to 2-06 in Killorglin in the 4th round of the County League. Things were tight all the way to half time with the home side leading 1-03 to 0-03 but in the second half the home side pulled away.

The u14 girls travelled to Rathmore for a game played with a cold wind blowing right down the pitch. It was the home side that took the win but the Ballymac girls certainly proved they have what it takes to compete.

Both the A and B teams travelled to Ballymac with the u12 Blue team registering their first win of the season. It was an overall good team display that laid the groundwork for the 4-12 to 3-08 win. The Gold team were much too strong for Fossa B and great all round display saw them score 5-25 without reply. The C team, and credit to the club for having the numbers to field 3 teams at this age group, were 2-12 to 2-05 winners away to Cordal.

The u10’s were in Tralee for a number of friendlies against Kerins O’Rahillys and Lispole with all the boys gained some valuable game time. The u10’s will take part in the Castleisland District Go games which begin this week.

The u6’s and u8’s continue their work in the academy and are all improving week on week.

In the Lotto, which took place in O’Rioda’s Bar, saw no winner from the numbers drawn 1,3,8 and 23.The next draw is in Ballygarry Hotel on Monday May 8th with the jackpot being e7,800.

No Parade in Tralee: Sadly despite the best efforts of the Coiste na nOg Committee and the Tralee District Board there is no parade in Tralee. With the road works in the town centre the Council did work with the organisers to try and final an alternative but Health and Safety concerns meant that this was not possible.

I am sure the Tralee teams will not mind making the short hop to Castleisland to take part in this important celebration of under-age football over the last 5 decades.

PARNELL’S NEWS:

The u10’s hosted their Go Games with Ardfert, Churchill and Ballyheigue the visitors and all players enjoyed their blitz.

In the u12 County League St Pat’s put up a good performance against a skilful Annascaul/Lispole side in the second half but a slow start cost them and they went down 3-04 to 5-14. They are away to Asdee/ Ballylongford in their last Phase 1 County League game this Sunday at 6pm.

The u14’swent down to Renard 5-15 to 3-04 away in South Kerry and are at home to St Mary’s in midweek while the u16’s will be looking to book their place in the final of the Central League Division 3 when they faced Castleisland Demsonds.

The minors are into the semifinals of the Division 6B after a win against Asdee/ Ballylongford. They will play Moyvane/ Tarbert in Finuge in the final tonight Friday night May 5th at 7pm.

The Senior team will play Shannon Rangers in the Garvey’s Senior Football Championship this Saturday, May 6th and the club wish manager Seamus Murphy and his squad all the best.

The club is delighted for its senior team player Jordan Conway on his performance with the victorious winning Kerry hurling team in the Leinster SHC Round Robin competition where he hit 2 points.

THE ROCK SEES OFF THE PUCK: Austin Stacks 5-12 defeated Laune Rangers 2-08 in the Div. 1 final of The Kelliher’s Toyota Tralee Central Region U16s football competition. The lads from the Rock were off to a dream start with two goals in the opening minutes of the game but Rangers soon responded when they too found the net. A quick rally by Stacks cancelled out that goal when they raised the green flag for the third time in the first quarter and still no points by either team on the board.

Laune Rangers worked hard to

find more scores but met a wall of opposition from their opponents limiting their scores in this half. Stacks were ahead 4-04 to Laune Rangers 1-03 at the half time interval.

Rangers had a good start to the second half with four unanswered points but soon Stacks settled and played with more commitment edging further ahead and winning the trophy which was presented to the Austin Stacks captain, Eoghan Carroll, by Central Region chairman, PJ Shanahan. The game was played to a high standard in a very sporting manner.
