‘Before the Bell’ Opens at The Lodge, Balloonagh

A new chapter in Kerry’s educational landscape began with the official opening of Before the Bell, a primary school age childcare and after-school campus housed in the beautifully restored Mercy Lodge, Balloonagh, Tralee. This latest project from the Mounthawk Montessori School Group, led by Susan Quirke-Crowley and her family, marks a heartfelt legacy of learning, care, and community.

Speaking at the event, Susan described the project as “more than just opening a building—it’s about fulfilling a dream.” General Manager Helena Wallace Dowling and a dedicated team helped realise this vision. Now fully reimagined, The Lodge has transformed into a Reggio Emilia-inspired centre for ‘before and after ‘school-age education with Junior and Senior ‘Stay & Play’ sessions after school hours—a Casa Dei Bambini or “House of Children.”

Minister Norma Foley, who officiated the ceremony, noted the deeply personal connection her family shares with the school’s journey, recalling her late father Denis Foley’s role in securing the original EOCP funding in 1999.

Sr. Bernadette Costello of the Mercy Order offered a touching reflection on the Lodge’s historic role in education and service. “To see it brought back to life with children once again at its heart is both humbling and joyful,” she said.

The event welcomed leaders from Early Childhood Ireland, local schools, the Mercy Congregation, and Kerry County Childcare Committee. The transfer of the Lodge was made possible by Canice Walsh, with Jim Finucane’s introduction to the site just 11 months ago setting the wheels in motion.

The day included heartfelt tributes, the planting of an apple tree in memory of loved ones, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by Susan’s granddaughter Leah. Staff were celebrated for recent achievements, including six national awards in 2025.

Before the Bell is more than a centre—it is a tribute to intergenerational care, community spirit, and a future rich in promise. Its a Legacy of Learning and Love !

Tralee Post Offices Must Be Protected by Urgent Government Investment, Says National Report

A new report from the Irish Postmasters’ Union (IPU) has sounded the alarm for post offices in Tralee and across the country, calling for a strategic annual investment of €15 million to safeguard the future of this vital community service. With the current Government funding due to expire at the end of 2025, the IPU is urging immediate clarity and commitment to prevent the risk of widespread closures.

Tralee’s post offices, including Rock Street Post Office operated by Postmaster Marie Williams, have long served as essential community hubs—offering banking services, social welfare payments, and a human connection in an increasingly digital world. As local bank branches continue to shut down, post offices have taken on even more responsibility, especially for older residents and those without easy access to online services.

Marie Williams, a dedicated

Postmaster known for her personal service and community spirit, says she has witnessed firsthand how vital the post office is for local people: “We’re more than just a counter—we’re a part of people’s daily lives, and losing that would be devastating for many in Tralee.”

The IPU report, Securing the Future: Sustaining Ireland’s Post Office Network through Strategic Investment, values the network’s contribution to society and the economy at up to €776 million annually. Yet, maintaining this service would cost the State just €2.94 per person per year—less than the price of a coffee.

With 91% of the public believing post offices remain crucial in the digital age, and 82% of young adults agreeing that communities would suffer without them, public support is clear.

IPU President Seán Martin stressed, “A modest investment now would

no community is left behind.” The call is clear: Tralee’s post offices, including Rock Street, need action— not promises.

Creativity Takes Centre Stage: Cruinniú na nÓg Returns to Kerry This June

Kerry County Council’s Creative Ireland Office is delighted to announce the return of Cruinniú na nÓg—Ireland’s national day of free creative activity for young people— on Saturday, 7 June 2025. With over 60 free events planned across the county, children and teenagers from ages 0 to 18 are invited to immerse themselves in creativity, imagination, and fun—Kerry style.

The 2025 programme is coordinated by Emma Carmody, Creative Communities Engagement Officer, with support from the Kerry County Council Arts Office team. Events will span every corner of the county, featuring activities such as circus skills, puppet-making, creative writing, comic book illustration, music, dance, and theatre workshops.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for young people to enjoy meaningful creative experiences, build skills, and make new friends,” said Cathaoirleach Breandán Fitzgerald.

“We are proud to be a country that places such value on youth creativity.”

A special feature of this year’s programme is the ‘Cruinniú Late’ events in Tralee and Killorglin, designed especially for teenagers with support from the Night-Time Economy initiative. These, along with a wide range of daytime workshops, aim to ensure every young person finds something to spark their interest.

Arts Officer Kate Kennelly praised the programme’s diversity, noting it reflects the “incredible creative work happening across Kerry.”

The full schedule is now available online at arts.kerrycoco.ie or on Instagram and Facebook @ kerrycoarts. Some events require advance booking, so early registration is recommended.

Following the Navigator Festival in Fenit, St Brendan has come into the Museum. Local artist Amanda Bentley-Curran worked with four local primary schools along the St Brendan Way to reimagine St Brendan the Navigator by creating colourful collages and paper-mâché displays. The project started in March and culminated in COLOUR ME BRENDAN - a creative art exhibition at Kerry County Museum, 20 May to 9 June 2025. Visitors can discover the life and adventures of St Brendan the Navigator through children’s imagination. From Brendan as a young boy to his famous adventures sailing across the Ocean, the pupils of Fenit, Spa, Ardfert & Kilmoyley NS are bringing Brendan to life in this colourful, creative showcase. Minister Foley Welcomes €3,000 Funding for Men’s Sheds in Kerry

Kerry TD and Minister for Children, Disability, and Equality, Norma Foley, has welcomed the announcement that each Men’s Shed in Kerry will be eligible for funding of up to €3,000 this year.

The funding, part of a national €1 million support package from the Irish Men’s Sheds Association, will benefit 13 Men’s Sheds across the

county, including groups in Tralee, Killarney, Listowel, Dingle, Ballyduff, and Kenmare.

Minister Foley praised the positive impact of Men’s Sheds, noting, “They do invaluable work helping men to learn, share skills, and build friendships. As they often say themselves, the most powerful tool they have is the kettle—because

there’s nothing like a cup of tea and a chat.”

She also acknowledged the growing number of Women’s Sheds in Kerry and across Ireland. While currently funded locally through the Local Enhancement Programme, they are not eligible for collective national funding due to the absence of a national body.

Minister Foley expressed her commitment to supporting Women’s Sheds and is working with Minister Dara Calleary to explore the creation of a similar national fund.

St Mary’s CBS The Green Wins 2025 Bank of Ireland Money Smarts Challenge

A team from St Mary’s CBS The Green in Tralee has been crowned national champions in the 2025 Bank of Ireland Money Smarts Challenge. Competing against over 1,700 students from 420 schools across Ireland, the winning team— MJ McCarthy, Ethan Ward, Kim Escobar, and Aodhán Morrison— secured the €2,000 first prize for their school.

The virtual event, held on March 25th and 26th, is part of Bank of Ireland’s free Money Smarts financial literacy programme for secondary schools. The quiz aims to equip students with key money management skills and habits for future financial wellbeing. The St

Mary’s students were guided by their teacher, Ms. Caroline Dillane, and received their prize at school from Munster Rugby stars Alex Nankivell and Shane Daly.

Bank of Ireland’s Head of Customer Segments, Rory Carty, praised the winners, highlighting the importance of financial education for young people, especially as recent studies show a decline in financial literacy among younger age groups.

Now in its 7th year, the programme has reached over 600,000 students since 2017. Carty added: “The Money Smarts Challenge is helping a new generation make informed

Final Tips for 2025 State Exams Candidates

The countdown is nearly over as the 2025 State Exams begin on Wednesday, 4th June. With the return to normal Leaving Cert grading, the post-marking adjustment has been reduced from 7.5% to 5.5%, and will continue to be phased out to eliminate grade inflation.

The good news is that there’s a wide range of opportunities available to school leavers in a strong economy— CAO offers, tertiary degrees, apprenticeships, traineeships, and more. You’ve done the hard work, now it’s time to go in and earn your reward.

The Leaving Certificate exams run until 24th June, Junior Cycle until 16th June, and Leaving Certificate

Applied (LCA) until 12th June. Use the remaining days wisely. Focus your revision on subjects scheduled in the first week. Complete major revision by Sunday, do light review and go over tips on Monday, and briefly skim notes on Tuesday. Prepare well for each exam. Organise your materials, from pens and calculators to a watch and tissues. Enter each exam calmly, sit in your seat early, and ensure your desk is steady. Read instructions carefully, and manage your time during the exam. After each exam, avoid overanalysing. These exams are a marathon—maintain good nutrition, stay hydrated, exercise regularly, and protect yourself from sunburn.

Exam timetables are available at www.examinations.ie. Leaving Cert results will be released on Friday, 22nd August, and CAO Round One offers on Wednesday, 27th August.

to St Mary’s CBS The Green for their outstanding achievement.”

The new Civil Restraining Orders

Sylvia is finding that she is receiving a lot of intimidatory texts from a former friend and former work colleague and has the feeling that she is being followed as the “friend” seems to be turning up at her place of abode, her workplace and other locations which she frequents. She is finding it very scary and is frightened she is wondering what she can do about it.

There is a new type of order which came in on the 2/9/2024 where one might not be able to apply for a safety or barring order due to not fitting into the applicant categories where a person could apply for a Civil Restraining order.

It is usually in relation to stalking behaviour or behaviour that causes a person

(a) to fear that violence will be used against the applicant or person, or Causes (b) serious alarm or distress that has a substantial adverse impact on his or her usual day-to-day activities. and this might include any of the following or even other behaviour

• Watching, monitoring, tracking or spying.

• Threatening to harm a person or someone close to them

• Pestering

• Impersonating or pretending to act as a person.

• Communicating with others about you or pretending to act or communicate on your behalf.

• Sharing private information about you to other people

• Interfering or damaging property, including pets

• Loitering near where you are as you go about your life: at home, at work and socially.

• Interfering with your email, and phone communications or online activity.

• Breaching (breaking) a court order that prohibits them from communicating with or about you or approaching you,

One can apply to the district court for a civil restraining order which can last up to five years and prohibits the person from continuing the behaviour if they do they are liable for fine and/or imprisonment up to 12 months. What the order does is stop the person from using or threatening to use violence against, molesting or putting in fear the person; following or communicating by any means with or about the person; approaching, within such distance as the court shall specify, the place of residence, education or employment of the person; engaging in such other forms of relevant conduct as the court specifies.

Sun Shines on Spa N.S. for an Inspirational ‘Live Life’ Day Honouring Donal Walsh

Despite an ominous start with harsh morning weather, spirits were not dampened at Spa National School last Sunday, May 25th, as nearly 500 attendees gathered for the annual Donal Walsh Spa 6KM Challenge. The event, hosted in honour of past pupil Donal Walsh, was filled with energy, community spirit, and sunshine—just in time for the main event.

School principal Peter Linehan

praised the dedication of the school’s Parents Association and volunteers. “We wanted to honour Donal in a meaningful way again this year,” he said. “Thanks to our amazing team and loyal sponsors, we created a space where people could come together, have fun, and ‘live life’—just as Donal encouraged us to do.”

The school grounds buzzed with activity throughout the day. A

student-led market, delicious food court, and lively music by Ian O’Doherty kept families entertained. Tom the Entertainer hosted a joyful disco, while street performer Ronaldo Fanzini had crowds laughing with his comedic routines. The highlight of the day was the 6KM run/walk, officially launched by Donal’s parents, Fionbarr and Elma Walsh, just as the sun broke through. First across the finish line in the men’s race was past pupil Billy Naughton, followed by Martin Ahern and David Chute. Local triathlete

Elma Walsh expressed her gratitude: “We’re so proud to be back in Spa N.S., celebrating Donal’s ‘Live Life’ message. This event was full of joy, laughter, and connection— everything Donal stood for.”

The day was a heartfelt tribute to Donal Walsh’s legacy, with community, resilience, and positivity shining just as brightly as the afternoon sun.

Ciara Tierney led the women’s race, with Evie O’Sullivan and Anna Tuite in pursuit.

KERRY FC MATCH REPORT

SSE Airtricity Men’s First Division –Matchday 16

Dundalk FC 2–0 Kerry FC Kerry FC travelled to Oriel Park for the first time, aiming to extend a three-game unbeaten run. Missing Daniel Okwute (suspension) and Ryan Kelliher (injury), the Kingdom started brightly with Joe Adams forcing an early save and Luke Palmer going close before halftime. However, Dundalk took the lead through Leonardo Gaxha’s cross-turned-goal just before the break. In the second half, Kerry fought hard but Daryl Horgan doubled Dundalk’s lead with a brilliant strike in the 67th minute. Substitute Eemeli Honkola had Kerry’s best chance to pull one back, but his shot flew over. Despite good defending from Tim-Oliver Hiemer late on, Dundalk held out. A tough result for Kerry after recent solid performances. They now look to bounce back at home against Longford Town next Friday before the summer break.

Kerry FC Starting XI: Hiemer, McQueen, Crowe, Mujaguzi, McGrath (C), Teahan, Adams, Williams, Aladesanusi, Palmer, Brookwell. Subs: Randriamamy, Amechi, Gleeson, Honkola, Brosnan, Alabi, O’Connell, Barrett, Horgan.

Kerry Nurse to Skydive on Father’s Day for Mental Health Awareness

Carley Stack from Ardfert, Co. Kerry, will mark Father’s Day, June 15th, in a unique way by skydiving to raise funds for Kerry Mental Health Association. A mental health staff nurse and mother of two, Carley is fundraising in memory of her father, who died by suicide.

“Suicide has affected many families,

including mine,” she said. “This skydive is my way of honouring my dad and raising awareness about mental health.”

Her husband Dawid and daughters’ godfather, Oskar, will also take part to support her leap—or give her a push, she jokes.

All funds raised through her iDonate

page will go directly to Kerry Mental Health Association, which supports individuals and families facing mental health challenges.

General Manager John Drummey thanked Carley, saying her support will help improve services and promote a stronger mental health community in Kerry.

Castleisland Student Brígh Wins National Title At Relove Fashion Competition

Brígh Harkin, a student at Presentation Secondary School, Castleisland, has been crowned the national winner at the first-ever Relove Fashion Grand Final, held at the Rediscovery Centre, Ireland’s National Centre for the Circular Economy.

The competition, which encourages young people to embrace sustainable fashion, saw over 400 students aged 12–19 from 26 local authority areas take part. Brígh’s creative and eco-conscious design stood out among 43 finalist outfits, each celebrating circular design and hands-on climate action. From

upcycled eveningwear to garments made from salvaged items, the finalists showcased a new wave of Irish fashion talent focused on reuse, repair, and redesign.

Winners were awarded an upcycled trophy, a sustainable fashion workshop, and €500 worth of fashion-related tools and equipment for their schools. The event highlighted the creativity and climate awareness of Ireland’s next generation of designers.

Arran Murphy, Head Judge and Programme Manager at Rediscover Fashion, praised the entrants for their

dedication and innovation, saying the competition’s ripple effects are already inspiring wider communities to embrace sustainable practices. Locally, Breda Moriarty, Environmental Awareness Officer with Kerry County Council, said: “We’re thrilled to have supported this brilliant initiative. Congratulations to all who took part—and especially to Brígh for her outstanding achievement.”

Brígh’s success puts Castleisland on the map as a centre for youthful creativity and sustainable innovation in fashion.
