Minister Norma Urges Kerry Parents to Collect Free Book Bags

Minister for Children and Kerry TD, Norma Foley, is encouraging Kerry parents to collect free “My Little Library” book bags for children starting primary school this September. All children finishing the Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) Programme are eligible. Bags are available from May 9th throughout the summer in nine Kerry libraries: Ballybunion, Caherciveen, Castleisland, Dingle, Kenmare, Killarney, Killorglin, Listowel, and Tralee. mEach bag includes carefully chosen books to help children prepare for school, along with tips for parents and a library card. Families not already library members are encouraged to join.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to spark a love of reading in children at a key moment in their development,” said Minister Foley. mBooks help support the transition to school, building early language and literacy skills essential for future learning. Since the initiative launched, around 20,000 children have joined libraries each year. Parents are urged to visit their local branch and take advantage of this free, fun, and educational gift.

Celebrate and Give Back: Kerry’s Humanity Ball Set to Ring in 2026 for a Cause

An exciting new event, The Humanity Ball, was officially launched this week—a glamorous black-tie New Year’s Eve charity gala set to take place at Ballygarry Estate Hotel & Spa, Tralee on 31st December 2025. Minister Norma Foley TD launched the event, which promises an unforgettable night of celebration with a purpose. The ball will feature a jazz drinks reception, gourmet dinner, live music from The Bentley Boys, a charity auction, special guests, and surprises. Most importantly, all proceeds will support three powerful charities: Kerry Hospice Foundation, Tír na nÓg Children’s Foundation, and One for Humanity. Kerry Hospice Foundation, the

main beneficiary, supports specialist palliative care across Kerry and is preparing for a much-needed expansion at University Hospital Kerry. Few families in the county haven’t been touched by its vital services.

The Tír na nÓg Children’s Foundation, founded by Louise Quill, works with vulnerable children in Tanzania, while One for Humanity, led by Shane Leahy, delivers emergency aid and mobile medical units to crisis areas like Ukraine and Gaza.

Stephen Stack, Chairperson of the Humanity Ball, praised the support of local businesses and encouraged sponsorship and ticket purchases to help make a real difference.

New Siamsa Tíre Production Brings Kerry’s Cable Legacy to Life

Siamsa Tíre, Ireland’s National Folk Theatre, proudly announces The Cable, a compelling new one-man drama inspired by the historic Transatlantic Cable laid from Valentia Island in 1866. Running from 17th–20th July 2025 at 8:00 PM nightly, this co-production is directed by internationally renowned Aidan Dooley (Tom Crean: Antarctic Explorer) and written and performed by Kerry native Mike Kelly. Set against the revolutionary moment when the first successful transatlantic message was sent, The Cable follows one family’s emotional

journey as they wait for a single word — capturing how groundbreaking technology changed lives forever. Blending personal story with historical transformation, this poignant drama explores themes of connection, loss, and hope. The show features original music by Dave McGilton, lighting design by John Hurley, and evocative visual storytelling that brings 19thcentury Kerry and the global shift in communication vividly to life.

Director Aidan Dooley commented, “This story rooted in Kerry’s soil shows how technology and emotion

intersect — a message that’s more relevant than ever today.”

Siamsa Tíre CEO Angela Ryan Whyte added, “The Cable reflects the miracle of connection through a local lens. It’s powerful, beautiful, and timely.”

Tickets are priced at €29 (€27.50 concession) and available now via www.siamsatire.com or by calling the box office on 066 7123055. Make a weekend of it in Tralee — with easy parking, full accessibility, and a licensed bar, Siamsa Tíre offers the perfect cultural escape on the Wild Atlantic Way.

Don’t Leave Loved Ones in Doubt: Organ Donation Saves Lives... Just ask Billy!

As Ireland prepares to implement Phase One of the Human Tissue Act on June 17, 2025, Organ Donor Awareness Week carries a powerful message: “Don’t Leave Your Loved Ones in Doubt.” The campaign encourages people to discuss their organ donation wishes with family members to ensure clarity and support during emotionally difficult times.

The new legislation means adults in Ireland will be considered organ donors after death unless they have officially opted out via a register maintained by the HSE. Despite this, families will still be consulted before

any organ donation proceeds. With approximately 600 people currently on transplant waiting lists, every donor matters.

One man who understands the lifechanging impact of organ donation is Billy Ryle, a grateful cornea transplant recipient from Tralee. Diagnosed with Fuchs Dystrophy, a disease that gradually leads to blindness, Billy faced the painful reality of losing his independence and ability to enjoy everyday activities like reading and driving. In 2022, Billy underwent two successful corneal transplants, receiving donated organs that

restored his sight and transformed his life. He has since returned to his beloved Austin Stacks GAA Club as Vice Chairman and documented his medical journey in his book, Donor Organ Transplants or Blind for the Football, proceeds of which benefited Vision Ireland. Billy also organised a “Dip at Dawn” fundraiser in Fenit and remains a vocal advocate for organ donation. He urges the public not to opt out of becoming organ donors under the new system, reminding us that donating organs after death is a gift of life and hope to those in desperate need.

Kerry FC Secure Historic 1-0 Win Over Treaty United

Kerry FC made history on Friday night at Mounthawk Park with a determined 1-0 win over Treaty United, marking the first time the club has secured back-to-back league victories in a single season. Following last week’s dramatic win over UCD, where Tim-Oliver Hiemer saved two penalties, the Kingdom entered this Munster Derby full of belief. The match was also the first under new first-team manager Colin Healy, the former Celtic and Cork City midfielder, who brings extensive experience to the role. Former manager Conor McCarthy and his

staff remain part of the setup. Kerry started on the front foot, creating early chances. Their breakthrough came in the 15th minute when Chris McQueen powered home a header from Oran Crowe’s corner.

Treaty United pushed hard for an equaliser, but Hiemer produced more goalkeeping heroics, denying Trpimir Vrljicak and Lee Devitt with crucial saves late in the game. Nine added minutes raised nerves around Mounthawk Park, especially when Treaty hit the crossbar. But

Kerry held on, sealing another 1-0 win and an unforgettable night for the club.

Next, Kerry FC return to Mounthawk Park this Friday to face Wexford FC, hoping to build on this incredible momentum.

By speaking with family and recording their wishes, individuals can leave a legacy of compassion. As Billy puts it, “Organ donors save lives. Don’t let your organs go to waste— give the gift of life.”
