Printed books continue to dominate Ireland’s reading habits, outshining audiobooks and e-books despite the rapid growth of digital formats, according to new research by Red C commissioned for Ireland Reads Day.
The nationwide study, carried out on behalf of the Local Government Management Agency (LGMA), surveyed almost 2,000 adults across all 31 local authorities. It found that 65% of adults still prefer traditional paperbacks and hardbacks, compared with 16% who favour e-books and 11% who choose audiobooks.
Head of Libraries Development at the LGMA, Stuart Hamilton, said the results show that physical books still anchor reading habits in a highly digital world. He added that most people associate reading with feeling calm, relaxed, content and inspired, describing it as a welcome break from busy, fast-paced lives. While print remains hugely important, he said digital and audio formats are also helping new audiences engage with books.
When it comes to daily reading, online news leads at 51%, followed by print books (14%), national newspapers (13%), e-books (7%) and audiobooks (5%).
Crime and thrillers remain the most popular genre, particularly among women over 55, while romance is far more popular with women than men. Biographies and true stories appeal equally to both.
Four in ten people read between one and five books per year, while almost one in ten read more than 40. Libraries continue to play a vital role, with 29% borrowing in person and 13% using library apps.
However, 46% say smartphones and tablets reduce the time say smartphones and tablets reduce the time they spend reading, rising to 56% among 18–34-year-olds.
Ireland Reads, led by Libraries Ireland, runs throughout February and culminates on February 28. More information is available at www.irelandreads.ie.

MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES
Sean is thinking of asking his long-term love Enya to marry him on Valentines Day 2026. He is going to present her with a beautiful 2 carat solitaire Diamond Gold Ring in a helicopter trip over the lakes of Killarney. He is wondering about the law and love.
The law has always recognised and vindicated human relationships. In the European Convention on Human Rights Act 2003 which brought the European Convention on human rights into Irish Law Article 8 of that convention highlights the right of everybody to respect for their private and family life, home and correspondence. Article 12 of the Convention highlights the protection of the right to marry. Over the years our Irish courts have highlighted our right to privacy under Article 40 of the Irish constitution and the right to marry under Article 41 regardless as to sexual orientation. So, our law promotes family life and the right to marry but while it is one of our freedoms it can be curtailed by legal regulation to protect engagements and marriage. The Law of Engagement in 1981 removed the right to sue for a broken engagement which allows people to become engaged without legal implications. In a situation where an engagement ends: if monies are put into property or wedding plans there is a path in the legislation in relation to divvying up and obtaining fairness in obtaining some funds back. It may not be possible to get back deposits on wedding venue, honeymoon, flowers etc but this can be written into a contract with the third party. Gifts to the couple are given in anticipation of the marriage and may have to be returned. The engagement ring would have to be given back.
Our marriage law demands 3 months’ notice and certain administrative requirements to ensure that it is a genuine marriage. If Sean and Enya want to elope to work in Australia and are in a rush application can be made to court to short circuit these 3 months and get married straight away. In brief to marry in Ireland one needs to be over 18, both parties must be able to freely consent. The 3 month’s notice should usually be given. Both parties must be single or legally divorced or have a legal civil annulment. Both parties should have the mental capacity to understand the nature of marriage. Both parties must not be related so that they fall within the list of prohibited blood or affinity relationships.
It is important to note that it is the Civil Marriage that is recognised by the state and often this is done within the ambit of a religious ceremony, but the celebrant must be a registered marriage solemniser. The Religious marriage often has a separate certificate to reflect the religious element of the marriage but that does not have legal effect. Having highlighted all the above hopefully in Ireland especially on Valentine’s Day 2026 the important thing is not to let the law interfere with the path of love and romance. It is there to protect people on the path.
Law Quip: “Who would give a law to lovers? Love is unto itself a higher law. “ Boethius, Roman philosopher

Quiz on Sunday, February 8th, at the Kerry Sports Academy in MTU, where a record 76 teams from across the region gathered for a lively and competitive day of quizzing. The event brought together pupils from 41 primary schools across Tralee, Castleisland, Killorglin, Ballyduff, Causeway, Corca Dhuibhne and surrounding areas, creating a fantastic atmosphere of teamwork, fun and school pride. Students competed in both Under 11 and Under 13 categories, with

Náisiúnta Naomh Eoin Baiste, Lios Póil and Scartaglen National School. An extra round of challenging questions finally decided the top two places, much to the delight of
the cheering crowd. In the Under 11 category, Scoil Náisiúnta Naomh Eoin Baiste, Lios Póil took first place, followed by Scartaglen National School in second and Spa National School in third. In the Under 13 competition, Gaelscoil Mhic Easmainn claimed first place, with Scoil Lios Teilic in second and Scoil Náisiúnta Naomh Eoin Baiste, Lios Póil in third. The top two teams in each age group now progress to the next stage of the national competition, representing Cara Credit Union. Siobhán Donnelly, Head of

Minister for Children, Disability, Equality and Kerry TD Norma Foley has outlined key developments in relation to Ireland’s evolving short-term letting regulations, as the Government moves to strike a balance between housing supply and tourism demand.
A new national short-term letting register will be established by Fáilte Ireland this summer. Once in place, properties must be included on the register in order to be advertised on short-term letting platforms. The measure is designed to bring greater oversight and consistency to the sector.
Under the updated framework, property owners in towns with a population of fewer than 20,000 will still be permitted to operate short-term lets, provided they secure the necessary planning
permission. In cities and larger towns with populations exceeding 20,000, planning permission will only be granted in limited circumstances. These may include “over-the-shop” accommodation or the refurbishment of protected structures, where the use supports town centre regeneration. Homeowners will continue to be allowed to rent out their principal private residence on short-term letting platforms for up to 90 days per year without needing planning permission. However, those who own a second or subsequent property and wish to use it for shortterm letting, even for a short period, will be required to obtain planning permission.
Speaking on the issue, Minister Foley said it was vital to balance housing needs with the importance of
