Exhibition launch of "Boundaries Real and Imagined" in Siamsa tonight!

This Friday 13th December at 6pm, Siamsa Tíre launches its 2019 winter Open Submission Exhibition. In September, Siamsa Tíre invited artists in the southwest of Ireland to submit works with the theme of 'Boundaries Real and Imagined' for an exhibition curated by Sharon Murphy. It has been our largest submission to date with 54 pieces being chosen by the curator for inclusion in the exhibition. At the launch in the Siamsa Tíre Galleries, special awards will be announced on the night. All artworks will be unframed and are available for purchase with collection on Feb 6th when the exhibition closes.Catriona Fallon, Siamsa Tíre Visual Arts Curator comments, "We have had a wonderful response from artists in the south west to this year's brief on large pieces of art paper instead of canvas. Entrants ranged from 18 up to 70 years and from new artists to semi-professionals. All of the submissions interpreted the theme in very different ways using a variety of materials, creating a very interesting exhibition for our gallery visitors." Siamsa Tíre Galleries are open daily and admission is free.

The annual preChristmas weekend sees the shopping centre play host to a variety of local food producers and craftspeople, giving them an opportunity to showcase their produce and creations from 11am - 5pm each day.

Manor West has hosted a number of Food & Craft Fairs this year, welcoming a diverse range of local entrepreneurs and kindly allowing them to exhibit at the fair free of charge. The Christmas Food and Craft Fair Weekend has become a special festive tradition for the people of Tralee, where they can sample the very best of local artisan produce and find unique handmade gifts in the run up to Christmas.

Ahead of the exciting weekend, Derek Rusk, Shopping Centre Manager commented, “We look forward to the Christmas Food and Craft Fair Weekend every year here in Manor West Shopping

Saorview Frequency changes

Have you notice lately that you are getting trouble from your saorview channels? I have received calls from customers that there are getting no signal. If you are receiving your signal from Knockmoyle transmitter then you need to retune your Television as there is a frequency change, the reason for this as quoted from the saorview Website

Following a decision by the EU, some of the TV broadcast spectrum that is used by Saorview is to be reallocated to other purposes. As a result of the 700 MHz migration some Saorview customers will be a ected by the changes. The migration is taking place between 4/9/19 and Wednesday 4/3/20, Saorview will be providing information to its viewers re awareness and advice . Saorview customers can check to see if they will be a ected by the changes by using this website or contacting Saorview .Many Saorview users will not be a ected. But for those that are a ected, they will need to retune their Saorview box or TV, and some customers may need to have some work done on their aerial and/or installation.

GOMO Irelands newest phone network... Any good ?

I love a bargain. Like, I really love a bargain. So, when a new network launches in Ireland o ering unlimited calls, texts and data for €9.99 GoMo promises to give you “all you need” to stay connected. Their o ering is deliberately vague to keep you focused on that €9.99 per month price tag. But, let’s take a step back and look at what unlimited means with GoMo. There is a data limited of 80GB per month. That would be over twenty thousand Spotify tracks. To make things even more real, it’s about 80 hours of Net ix. To be fair that’s a lot compared to other Moblie networks. I decided to switch my wife and daughter over to the network. Ordered the sim online and received it within days, all good so it seems until I tried to move their old number over to the network. It takes days for it to happen so be prepared to not receive calls for a few days. Under the terms and conditions, it’s not available for business users

Kerry sees off major international competition to secure Travel Conference

DER Touristik, a major German tour operator and the largest tour operator from Mainland Europe to the island of Ireland, has announced it will host its prestigious annual travel academy in Killarney, in October 2020. The event is always held in leading travel destinations – most recently in Cuba in 2019 and in Finland in 2018. Killarney beat off challenges from a number of other top destinations to host the 2020 event.

The congress is DER Touristik’s annual event and will take place over three nights, in October 2020. Around 300 top German travel agents, as well as influential travel journalists and senior managers from DER Touristik – are expected to participate.

In addition to attending the travel academy, delegates will have the opportunity to participate in specially designed pre-conference tours across Kerry and the island of Ireland – to enhance their knowledge of the tourism

experiences and attractions on offer here and allow them to sample our legendary hospitality and welcome.

As well as generating valuable off-season business, giving the local economy a significant boost during a traditionally quieter time, the annual travel academy always helps boost German visitor numbers to the host destination in subsequent years.

Welcoming the news, Minister for Tourism and Sport, Brendan Griffin TD, said: “The decision by Der Touristik to hold its 2020 travel academy in Kerry is a real vote of confidence in Killarney Kerry and Ireland and is testament to the strong appeal of Kerry and the island of Ireland as a ‘must see’ destination for German holidaymakers.

Niall Gibbons, CEO of Tourism Ireland, said: “It is a tremendous honour for Killarney to have won this prestigious event in the face

of competition from other destinations. Tourism Ireland is delighted to have played its part in securing this event, which confirms Killarney Kerry and Ireland as a world-class destination. Germany is our third-largest source of visitors and in 2018 we welcomed 784,000 German visitors to the island of Ireland.

Kerry Supporters Club celebrate 30 years by honouring the 5 players who each hold 8 All Ireland Medals

Ger Power, Pat Spillane, Ogie Moran, Mikey Sheehy & the late Paudie O Se hold more collective medals than anyone in the country & it’s to be celebrated at one of the longest running Social gatherings in the county.

Kerry Supporters Club will celebrate their 30th consecutive year at Ballygarry House on Saturday 18th January 2020. The evening will lead with a Drinks reception in the Pavilion on arrival followed by a fabulous menu & live band. The highlight will be honouring the all-time greats on stage with MC Tim Moynihan from Radio Kerry’s Terrace talk who will put them through their paces in a live “on the couch” interview where many a story of the glory years will be revealed.

Chairperson

Donie O’Leary and the organising committee said “It will be a gathering like no other we have had to date. To have such marvellous players & talent together with 40 medals collectively in the room is a first for the Kerry Supporters. We travelled the length & breath of the country to see these men play for Kerry & we really look forward to off the ball tales on the night” One of the highlights during the meal will be the panel discussion, hosted by Radio Kerry’s Tim Moynihan, and featuring five Kerry panellists

Kevin Keogh, Senior Vice President Sales and Marketing for Der Touristik, said: “As the market leader for tourism from Germany to the island of Ireland for well over 50 years, DER Touristik is delighted to bring its 300 hundred top travel agents to Ireland for our 2020 Academy and to encourage them the discover the destination.”

LAUGHTER ....THE BEST MEDICINE !

A MAN SHOWS OFF HIS APARTMENT TO HIS FRIENDS

After a night of drinking a man shows off his new apartment to his friends. In the bedroom they spot a giant gong. What’s that gong for? They ask. That’s not a gong he says, that’s a talking clock. Yeah right, the friends say, show us how it works then. So the man smashes it as hard as he can and takes a step back. His friends are Just staring when suddenly they hear a bang on the wall and a loud voice ..... ‘stop with the noise you dumb ass it’s 3.45 in the morning!’!! A new Supermarket opened near me.....

A NEW SUPERMARKET OPENED NEAR MY HOUSE.

It has an automatic water mister to keep the produce fresh.

And, just before the mister turns on, you hear the sound of distant thunder and the smell of fresh rain. When you approach the milk cases, you hear cows mooing and experience the scent of fresh hay.

When you approach the egg case, you hear hens cluck and cackle, and the air is filled with the pleasing aroma of bacon and eggs frying on the stove. The veggie department features the smell of freshly buttered corn.

I don’t buy toilet paper there anymore

LITTLE JOHNNY IS PLAYING IN HIS ROOM..

When his mother comes in and announces that they are going to go next door to see their neighbors newborn baby.

Johnny’s mother is well aware that Johnny has a VERY bad habit of saying the most inappropriate things at the most inappropriate of times. Couple that with the fact that the baby next door was born without any ears, this prompts Johnny’s mother to sternly warn Johnny that if he utters a single word about the babies missing ears, she will in fact beat him into next week.

Hearing this, Johnny promises that he will not say one word about the newborn babies malady.

Off they go to the neighbors house to see the new baby. Upon peering into the crib, little Johnny’s eyes get wide and he exclaims.

“WOW! What beautiful hair your baby has. She is soooo beautiful.” “Why thank you Johnny.” the new Mother replies. “What a kind thing for you to say.”

“And such beautiful blue eyes she has.” Johnny says. “Can she see well out of those beautiful eyes?”

“Why yes Johnny.” The proud Mother says. “In fact she has perfect 20/20 vision.”

“Well that is great!” says little Johnny “Because if she needed glasses, she’d be in trouble !!”

THE BELL RINGER

A church’s bell ringer passed away. So they posted the position and a man came in with no arms wanting the job. The clergy wasn’t sure he could do it, but he convinced them to let him try it. They climbed the bell tower and the guy ran toward the bell and hit it with his head. They gave him the job. The next day he went to ring the bell, tripped, bounced off the bell and fell to the sidewalk below. Two guys were walking past.

One asked, “Do you know this guy?”

The second guy responded, “No, but his face rings a bell.” The next day, the dead bell ringer’s twin brother comes in for the again vacant bell ringer position. He also has no arms. They lead him up to the bell tower, he runs at the bell, trips and falls to the sidewalk below.

The same two guys walk by.

The first asks, “Do you know him?”

The second guy responds, “No, but he’s a dead ringer for the guy we saw yesterday.”

SANTA DATES AND TIMES

Rebecca Sh tt Beauty

HELLO BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE

I hope you’re all having a fantastic week! I CANNOT BELIEVE that it’s less than two weeks until Christmas… how did that happen? WOW.

LASHES

I love having a few fresh pairs of lashes for the Christmas season. It’s a must in my opinion. Lashes just add that little extra something to a makeup look! A few of the brands and styles I swear by are…

Penneys ‘Full Look’ lashes €1.50

Lilly Lashes - Miami €30 (you get 25+ wears out of one pair) on Beautybay (online)

Ardell Wispie Lashes €25 (for 5 pairs) or €7 for one pair (in boots)

Kiss Lashes - Lash Couture Naked Drama: There’s so many styles, my favourite is Tulle €10.50

SPARKLES ON THE EYE

Sparkly eyeshadow is fab at Christmas. You can add a pop of sparkle to any look and call it a day. My all time favourite thing to add sparkle is the Stila Magnificent Metals, shade Kitten Karma is my all time favourite. You can get them in Mcauleys Chemist or if you’re lucky TK Maxx. €29

You can of course use any sparkly eyeshadow, but those are my favourites.

HYDRATION

If you follow me anywhere online you know I always say ‘Hydration is key’. So make sure you get your water in… minimum 2 litres per day folks. Your skin will suffer otherwise. In addition to this here’s a few of my favourite hydrating products.

CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser €10 (available in most pharmacies)

Pixi Rose Caviar Essence €34 (apply after cleansing before moisturiser)

RED LIP

A red lip for me is absolutely key at Christmas time (it hides all signs of hangovers and tiredness)... A few of my favourite shades are:

Joli Rouge 742 or 743 €24

€32

Kylie Cosmetics Red Velvet (only available on KylieCosmetics.com) €25 but ordering online wouldn’t be guaranteed to be here before Christmas.

Drop in tourist numbers deep concern for Kerry Restaurants

The Restaurants Association of Ireland are calling on the government to reduce the food VAT rate after recent figures released by the CSO show a worrying decrease in tourism figures for 2019.The figures cover the period between July to September 2019 and show that compared to the same period in 2018, nights spent in Ireland by overseas travellers decreased by 4.5%. This is traditionally the peak tourist season for Ireland Adrian Cummins, CEO of the Restaurants Association of Ireland“The Restaurants Association of Ireland are angry at the government’s complete lack of action to support the tourism industry in Ireland. The latest CSO figures are extremely worrying for restaurant and food businesses who rely hugely on the tourism trade to keep afloat. The higher food VAT rate makes Ireland more expensive and less appealing for visitors.

An immediate reduction in the food VAT rate is essential to combat these declining tourism figures. We ask that the 40 million promised to the industry in Budget 2020 by Minister for Finance Paschal Donoghue be allocated immediately to combat these decreasing figures. Businesses will continue to face closure if costs aren’t cut and tourism will continue to suffer.”

Other concerning results from the CSO figures show that the average duration of overseas trips to Ireland decreased from 7.4 nights during the period in 2018 to 7.0 nights in 2019. There were however some positives from the CSO figures, with the number of business trips to Ireland increasing during the same period from 333 to 350.

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR

SECOND LAST COLUMN OF THE YEAR:

NA GAEIL CREATES HISTORY BUT MORE TO COME: It’s a great time to be a player, manager or member of Na Gaeil and we congratulate them on being crowned Munster Junior Champions. Once again they were far superior to their opponents and now even the disruption of the game being moved from 3pm back to 11am due to the weather warning bothered them.

From the first minute when Dara Devine pointed the Tralee side were never headed and when the same player was quickest to react, after the Mullinahone keeper saved a Diarmuid O’Connor shot, and hit the net it was 1-07 to no score at the half.

Na Gaeil continued to push on and ended up hitting 3-13 while their opponents scored 1-01 very late on. Munster Council Vice-Chair Ger Ryan presented the Cup to a delighted captain Eoin Doody. Na Gaeil are the youngest club in Kerry and the youngest in Munster to win this trophy.

The win sets up another Kerry v Mayo clash in the All Ireland semi-final when they will face Kilmaine in January and the squad and management won’t be looking further forward than that game.

The Na Gaeil AGM took place last night, Thursday December 12th, while the rest of the activities on and off the field continue during the winter.

In the Lotto there was no winner from the numbers drawn 4, 15, 21 and 28 and the next jackpot is e2,900.

The evening will lead with a Drinks reception in the Pavilion on arrival followed by a fabulous menu & live band. The highlight will be honouring the all-time greats on stage with MC Tim Moynihan from Radio Kerry’s Terrace talk who will put them through their paces in a live “on the couch” interview where many a story of the glory years will

be revealed.

Chairperson Donie O’Leary and the organising committee said “It will be a gathering like no other we have had to date. To have such marvellous players & talent together with 40 medals collectively in the room is a first for the Kerry Supporters. We travelled the length & breath of the country to see these men play for Kerry & we really look forward to off the ball tales on the night”

One of the highlights during the meal will be the panel discussion, hosted by Radio Kerry’s Tim Moynihan, and featuring five Kerry panellists who have all won eight All Ireland Medals each. This lineup includes Ogie Moran, Mikey Sheehy, Pat Spillane, Ger Power & Padraig Og O’Se on behalf of his late father Paudi O’Se. Tickets are for sale through any committee member or at the main reception at Ballygarry House Hotel 0667123322

KERRY ON THE EIR:

Eir Sport has announced their coverage of the Allianz Leagues with 15 football and hurling games being broadcast live. The action kicks off on Saturday January 25th with a triple header. The Scor question time took place in Mallow with the club represented by Damien Kisaane, Dermot Reen, Donnacha Buttimer and Stephen Buttimer. Rathmore and Churchill did make it through to the final this Saturday in Croke Park. The finals of Scor na nOg will be held in Glenbeigh this Sunday morning starting at 11am and the club wishes all its members the best and also to the quiz team who have their competition.

CLUB NIGHT OUT : A small but select few gathered in Sean Ógs last Saturday night to bring the curtain down on what was a historic and successful year for the club. For the first time in its history, the club fielded Senior Mens and Ladies teams and the men certainly showed they deserved to be playing Senior hurling, having got to the County Intermediate Championship semi-final, beaten by the eventual winners Kilgarvan. Our juveniles also had a great year, the highlight being participation in Féile na nGael, where the boys hosted Éire Óg, Carrickmore, Co. Tyrone and the girls hosted Castleblaney, Co. Monaghan.

CLUB DRAW: At the club night out, the early sellers draw was held for those who had sold GAA National Draw tickets by the 7th December. Íde Hennessy was the 1st prize winner and she can look forward to relaxing after Christmas in the Nadúr Spa in Ballygarry, followed by lunch and 2nd prize was won by Luke & Ryan Hanafin who won a hamper of Christmas goodies, Club merchandise & a session at The Sports Recovery Clinic. Please return any outstanding tickets as soon as possible to any member of the Club Executive.

In the first of the Last 4 games games Tralee CBS overcame Cobh last Friday in Crotta. BIGGEST SWIM OF THE YEAR FAST APPROACHING:

Tralee Bay Swimming Club are proud to announce details of The 68th Annual

Christmas Day Swim in Fenit. Once again the collection will be in aid of RNLI Fenit Lifeboats. The swim will take place at 12 noon and the day will begin with the traditional singing of Jingle Bells and then Santa will sound the bell for the first of 3 dashes into the water. The winter swimmers will enjoy a longer swim.

The Fenit Christmas swim is one of the oldest in the country and is the largest in Kerry. There will be around 800 swimmers on the day with up to 2000 family members

cheering them on. It’s a great start to the festivities for the day, so come along and enjoy the fun. The Lifeboat crews will be there collecting and will have loads of hot teas, coffees and soup available so please give generously. They will also be in the water for the safety of the swimmers. Organisers ask that you arrive early and park sensibly. Parking will be at a premium and you may have to walk a small bit. Swimmers are also asked to obey all the safety guidelines.

12 SWIMS OF CHRISTMAS:

The Tralee Bay Swimming Club will begin their 4th year of swimming 12 days over Christmas on Saturday the 21st December and continue up to Saturday 4th January in Fenit. This is a great challenge and great craic and the First Swim will be at 11am. This idea was first brought up by the late Brian Stynes to the regular Tralee Bay Winter Swimmers but was never really adhered to until 4 years ago when a structure was put to it . The first year we had 4 completing the challenge and last year we had 18 with up to 50 swimmers taking part on some days.

WARRIORS SINK NEPTUNE TO RISE TO THE TOP OF THE SUPERLEAGUE:

In one of the tightest Men’s SuperLeagues in years Garvey’s Tralee Warriors are top of the pile and added another win last weekend as they downed Coughlan C&S Neptune 98-76 in the Complex.

The Warriors were straight out of the block and were soon ahead and helped by threes from Daniel Jokubaitis and Eoin Quigley build up a double figure lead. The Cork side fought back with the evergreen Ger Noonan amongst their scorers but Tralee led 29-21 at the end of the first.

Neptune opened the second half the better but a flurry of threes from both sides saw the game tied at 39 points each. But the Warriors are high on confidence and a 14 point scoring blitz from Donaghy, Buivydas and Lawton saw them take a 54-44 lead into the break. And they came out for the second half as they did in the first and quickly added 11 points and by the end of the third the win was as good as secured as the Warriors led by 22 points.

Lawton was showcasing all their skills and fired in four three pointers in the final quarter. Neptune never gave up but the Tralee side were too strong on the night to take the win.

Warriors PRO Alan Cantwell said that “this win will see the Warriors enter a very busy few weeks in great form as they face key fixtures in both the League and Cup. These begin this week with a trip to the capital to take on UCD Marian. “The boys will be looking to avenge

the defeat they suffered to the Dublin side in their opening League game. Tip off in Belfield is at 7pm on Saturday night.”

Back to the Neptune game and it was Jonathan Lawton who hit a game- high 26 points followed by Paul Dick with 21 and Rap Buivydas on 10.

ST BRENDAN’S OUT OF CUP:

St Brendan’s are out of the u20 Men’s Cup as they went down to Moycullen 56-43 in Tralee last weekend.

CUP SEMI-FINAL SCHEDULE

announced: The Warriors now know when they Cup semi-final will take place. Having suffered heartbreak at this stage last season they are back in Cork on Saturday January 11th for this year’s Hula Hoops Men’s Pat Duffy National Cup semi-final when they face Dublin’s DBS Eanna. The game tips off at 4pm.

The 11th is a big day for Kerry basketball as Team Tom McCarthy’s are also in Cup semi-final action. They take on Portlaoise Panthers in the Parochial Hall from 2pm.

BEST OF BASKETBALL SEEN AT THE BRUDDY BURROWS

TOURNAMENT:

The Bruddy Burrows Memorial U12 Tournament took place last Saturday and was as usual a fantastic event with great basketball action played throughout the day in both Moyderwell and Presentation Gym Tralee. In the end there could only be one winner and St. Brendan’s U12s coached by Nathan Roche claimed victory by 33-25 in a cracking Cup final against St. Mary's Castleisland. The hosts dominated the decider to win out in an exciting decider with Ryan Sheehy from St. Brendan’s voted MVP. St. Brendan’s captain Gearoid White accepted the Bruddy Burrows Memorial Cup from Seanie Burrows.

In the Shield Final Tralee Imperials overcame St. Anne's to win out in the end. It was a Kerry clean sweep with Gneeveguilla claiming the Plate title with a win over Moycullen.

Thanks to everybody who contributed to the running of the tournament that Bruddy himself would have been proud to see and the big crowd that turned up to witness a great display of underage basketball in Tralee.

GREAT WIN ON THE FIELD AND CUP DRAWS DONE AT MEETING:

The Kerry v Limerick District League Oscar Traynor game was played in poor conditions on Sunday and lucky that it kicked-off at 2pm as everyone was able to get home before the worst of the storm.

And great credit goes to both sets of players who provided a cracking game with Kerry winning 4-3.

They led 2-0 at the break and 3-1 but Limerick fought back to level. However the Kerry player who had been unlucky in their opening two games to get just a point really wanted to end with a win and scored the vital goal in the 85th minute.

Off the field and at the KDL Delegate meeting a number of Cup draws took place. From a Tralee point of view in the Greyhound Bar KO Cup Tralee Dynamos are away to Killorglin B, Strand Road will be at home to CS Clochain Breanainn , Classic FC will welcome Kilmoyley Athletic while St Brendan’s Park have a bye into the Last 16.

In the quarter final of the Celcius Cup Tralee Dynamos or Ballyheigue Athletic will be away to Listowel Celtic.

The draws also took place for the Jimmy Falvey Memorial Youths Cup with the Park having a tough trip to Kilarney Celtic in the tie of the 1st Round. The winners will be at home to the winners of Killarney Athletic and Dingle Bay Rovers in the ¼ finals.

The final draw made was for the opening round of the Dominos Pizza u17’s Cup and the Park are away to Rattoo Rovers in Round 1 with the winners away to the winners of Killarney Athletic and Dingle Bay Rovers in the ¼ final.

ACTION AT THE TRACK:

It is a busy weekend at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium with racing on the three nights. Starting on Friday the semi-finals of the De Laval A4 525 yards take place, On Saturday night as well as being the regional night for Kilflynn, St Senans and the Duagh Region there are the ON2 325 yards and the ON2 525 yards stakes. On Sunday night the rearranged meeting that was cancelled on last weekend due to the storm takes place.

GREAT NEWS FOR TRALEE BUT WILL THERE BE A SPORTING SPIN-OFF?

Tralee will be allocated significant funding by Fáilte Ireland to develop its potential as a tourism ‘destination town’. The funding has been allocated through Kerry County Council as part of the €15.5million ‘Destination Towns’ initiative launched earlier this year by the National Tourism Development Authority

It would be great if early in the New Year a meeting off all the sports bodies came together to see how cans sports tourism get a share of this fund to encourage more events and visitors to the town.
