To our Advertisers, Readers, Families and Friends

“ Well here’s to another one “ ...the words penned by the late great Shane McGowan in his timeless musical poem Fairytale of New York sung with the late Kirsty McColl ...Shane, we will miss you but at least we have your music . And 2023 has been a good one ...there are plenty of good news stories that we have reported every week to you , our readers , that show our town , Tralee is definitely on an upward curve . Our MTU going from strength to strength, Astellas announcing a €330 million investment in the town, Huge numbers attending and watching our Rose of Tralee , New Street fest taking hold, Ned O Sheas multimillion housing announcement , Lower Bridge St coming back in a big way ,Our Greenway attracting new visitors and developments , record nos attending Chamber events ,and numerous other developments & events happening around the greater Tralee area and Town centre, ...and thats only some of the things I can think of ! However , there have been casualties along the way and will continue to be even more ..that is the price you pay for growth and change !

Don’t get me wrong, we have to mind the house, but hey, a lot of us have been there before so our experience is vital in helping manage any adverse situations. When you see huge interest and developments in our town , you have to acknowledge that others have huge confidence in our future , Oftentimes the way that negativity gets amplified causes far more harm and is far more infectious than we realise !

Tralee’s biggest strength is its people, and we have a lot more to look forward to rather than be afraid of. At this time of year, as throughout the year, we urge you sincerely to support our advertisers, and all local businesses, to buy local, because that’s where a lot of our livelihoods come from - the local economy.

If it does well, we all do well! A big thank you to our contributors, who help keep us fresh, current and topical, Miriam’s Legal Corner, Billy from HRI in Tech Corner, Our Chamber Alliance , Nathan(out) Stephen (in ), David & Colette . Our photographers both the public and the professionals, John and Martin Cleary,Dominic Walsh, Moss Joe Brown, & Michelle Breen Crean .

Our back-room team, The Keanes & Co at Kingdom Printers and Rafal, our excellent creative hard-working graphic designer from Expose Design, who both ensure we deliver an excellent publication EVERY week! To all our advertisers and the businesses who help distribute the Tralee Advertiser every Friday!!” And to everybody else who send us in photos, articles, poems, stories and so much more, a big thank you. Keep doing it… We really do appreciate it.

We are looking forward to a little break now… We start all over again in January 2024 ...Looking forward to it!

Merry Christmas! Chris & Colette

O’Reilly, who captained the under-19 squad at Waterford FC before making his debut in the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division at

O’Reilly shares the excitement, emphasizing the team’s determination to surpass last year’s achievements and urging fans to join them at Mounthawk Park for the upcoming season.

First Team Head Coach Conor McCarthy expresses the club’s joy at securing both players for the 2024 season, noting Vasiu’s commendable progression through the academy and O’Reilly’s valuable contribution since joining the club at under 19 level. The students of Bryan Carr School of Performing Arts want you to be Part of their World as they present a 60-minute amateur junior licenced musical production of the famous Disney story which will come to life on the stage of Siamsa Tire this December.

From classic literature to the Academy Award-winning film and Broadway musical, Ariel’s undersea journey is a beautiful love story for the ages. Journey “under the sea” with Ariel and her aquatic friends in Disney’s The Little Mermaid JR., adapted from Disney’s Broadway production and the motion picture (featuring the enormously popular Academy Awardwinning music and delightfully charming book and lyrics). But first, she’ll have to defy her father, King Triton, make a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, and convince the handsome Prince Eric that she’s the girl whose enchanting voice he’s been seeking.

The Bryan Carr School of Performing Arts cast includes over 150 students led by their Director & Singing Teacher Bryan Carr with Choreography by Eleanor Feely & Laura Daly.

Disney’s The Little Mermaid JR. is licensed and presented in arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI).

Tralee mourns the passing of Maurice O Connor ...a Gentleman!

It was with deep sadness we learned of the passing of Mr Maurice O Connor , founder of The Tralee Advertiser in 1993, last weekend . Maurice owned and operated Ideal Printing Works at Connolly Park for many years, where he ran and was proficient in all aspects of the business and of the various printing machinery that came with the job. He worked for many years there with

staff and eventually started Tralee’s first freemium magazine -The Tralee Advertiser.

Maurice was going to retire in 2011 and sold The Tralee Advertiser to Mark Leen.

Mark tells us that he talked Maurice into staying on as Maurice and Lionel ( his graphic designer ) were such an

essential part of the Advertiser that all three of them worked together brilliantly as a team. “Maurice was in the office, Lionel did the layout and I went out and sold ads” said Mark. “ My father Matt Leen contributed with Jewels of The Kingdom and the late Frank O Connor did the poetry corner. I really enjoyed working with Maurice (Mossy) and indeed I learned a lot from him.”

“He was a consummate professional and always wore a suit and tie to work. I sold the ‘new look’ Tralee Advertiser after some three years to Chris and Collette Shortt and it has remained in good hands to this day. “ says Mark . Chris remembers the story well....” I remember meeting Maurice originally when I came to Tralee first in the late 80’s .

A very accomplished man I thought , he had been a former President of Tralee Chamber of Commerce , a prominent businessman and was a Town Councillor with Tralee Urban District Council . He remained on the Chamber Council and was a great man to ask advice from , such was his experience .

Little did I know that, 23 years later , we would eventually get to take the reins of the the ‘little publication ‘ that Maurice had started in 1993 and was so well nurtured by him and later on by Mark . It is incumbent on both myself and Colette to

keep this legacy to Maurice , a very very popular publication, alive and thriving . “ Many tribures are pouring in for Mossie ... “ a great judge of the horses & dogs ‘ ; ‘always a Trojan worker promoting Tralee ‘ ; ‘He was a pure gentleman ‘ ;

We here at the publication which he founded, wish to extend our deepest sympathy to his son Thomas daughters Eileen and Cathy and indeed to Marisa Reidy and all of the extended O Connor family.

Maurice will not be forgotten, may he rest in peace.

NOTES - 11TH DEC

Brenda Hartnett - An Appreciation:

The community gathered in immense crowds, heavy-hearted, beneath dimming Christmas lights, paying respects to Brenda Hartnett. Her loss was deeply felt by those who knew her as a cherished wife, mother, daughter, sister, niece, and aunt.

Despite the falling rain, indistinguishable from tearstained cheeks, the crowds waited patiently, reflecting on Brenda’s life, marked by her endearing smile, cheerful personality, and her unique ability to make others feel better for having known her.

The funeral procession, with bowed heads, expressed respect and deep gratitude for a life welllived but sadly cut short. Brenda will be profoundly missed but forever remembered. Solas na bhflaitheas uirthi.
