The Role:
• To guide, support and oversee, the performance of the Tralee team of 12 and manage the operations of the centre primarily focussed on delivering life saving clinical services including clinical governance, clinical standards, safety and oversight working within an allocated budget
• You will oversee the client journey including client assessments and risk assessments, ensuring best practice, and support access to the service in line with our service model and ensure that risk management strategies are implemented and reviewed as needed
The Person:
• Must be an experienced, qualified and fully accredited Psychotherapist or Counselling Psychologist with IACP, BACP, IAHIP, FTAI, IAPTP, APPI, APCP, NAPCP, PSI or ICP.
• The successful person will have strong leadership skills with experience at management level and have enthusiasm for the work of Pieta

LEGAL MATTERS CORNER
Fionn lives on his own and gets a lot of hassle from neighbouring hoodlums. He is wondering what would happen if one of them broke into his house and threatened him and he retaliated in self-defence.
As a result of the Criminal Law (Defence and Dwelling) Act 2011 which came into effect 13/1/13 a person may use reasonable force to defend themselves in their own home which is defined as the dwelling and curtilage of the dwelling. The curtilage of the dwelling is defined as the area immediately surrounding or adjacent to the dwelling used in conjunction with the dwelling and not a public place. Of course, this does not guarantee that the whole garden of a house particularly if it is large comes within the definition. We await caselaw for the interpretation of this.
So, a person may use force in defence of themselves, their property, their loved ones and to make a citizen’s arrest. However, the occupant must believe that the person has entered their dwelling as a trespasser and for the purposes of committing a criminal act and the force must be reasonable in the circumstances. It would appear that the test of reasonableness will look at what the person themselves thought in the circumstances as long as that thought process is not totally unreasonable. For example, if the occupier thought the person had a gun or a knife and tried to knock them out then with a baseball bat before they could shoot or knife them.
The act also provides a defence from being sued for the injuries as a result of the exercising of reasonable force on the person. So, if for example one injured a burglar in the course of the burglary in the home then they could not subsequently be successful in a personal injury claim. The act certainly helps people feel more secure in defending themselves in their own home. We often say our home is our castle and the Irish Constitution refers to the inviolability of the dwelling. This act would also be helpful if a person has a barring order against a former partner and that person came back to the home and was causing trouble and breaching the barring order. It means in relation to the persons protected by the barring order that they able to defend themselves with reasonable force.

Multi-million student learner centre for MTU
Minister for Education and Kerry T.D, Norma Foley has welcomed the progress being made on the new multi-million student learner centre for the Kerry Munster Technological University.
The Student Learner Centre on the North Campus in Tralee will have the potential to serve 2,000-3,000 students.
Minister Foley said: “I welcome the confirmation by my cabinet colleague Simon Harris, the Minister for Further and Higher Education, that the Student Learner Centre is progressing to the design stage.”
“It will be another step forward in providing state of the art facilities for the benefit of students at this great
technological university.
“I want to express my thanks to Minister Harris for his personal engagement with me on our ambition plans for the development, enhancement and growth of MTU. “
“The MTU provides first class education and opportunity for students of the south west region and beyond. It is a university that is going from strength to strength, and I look forward to further development and initiatives to support the limitless ambition we have for the MTU.”

Huge Participation & Growth In 2023 Kerry Mental Health & Wellbeing Fest
The 2023 Kerry Mental Health & Wellbeing Fest witnessed a remarkable surge in participation, surpassing 100% growth since 2020. Notably, 98% of respondents expressed their intent to attend similar events in 2024, according to feedback from over 100 attendees between October 7th and 14th. Impressively, 91% of participants conveyed satisfaction with this year’s Fest.
This annual week-long event, aligning with World Mental Health Day on October 10th, seeks to raise awareness of available mental health supports and services in Kerry. It also encourages engagement with the ‘Five Ways to Wellbeing’ through a vibrant and interactive program of events.
A staggering 99% of respondents,
predominantly female, indicated their willingness to recommend the Fest to friends next year. Feedback included a desire for a more diverse array of events throughout the county, indicating an appetite for broader offerings.
John Drummey, Chair of the Interagency Steering Group at Kerry Mental Health Association, expressed gratitude to organizers, community groups, businesses, funders, and partners for facilitating a dynamic program. Attendee numbers saw a 50% increase from 2022, prompting anticipation for the Fest scheduled from October 5th to 12th, 2024. Drummey emphasized the ongoing commitment to improvement, welcoming suggestions for new events and activities.
A celebratory event at the Brehon Hotel in Killarney, coinciding with International Volunteer Day on December 5th, honored event organizers. The Fest was orchestrated by an interagency steering group comprised of local entities supporting community wellbeing, including Connecting for Life Kerry, Healthy Kerry, Kerry County Council, and several others. For those interested in participating

Thats right St Stephen’s Day will see , once again, the Bill Kirby Memorial Walk , as organised by another local legend Michael ‘Fox’ O’Connor . “The walk will start from the Brogue Inn at 11.30 on Dec 26th “ says Michael ...”Its a 4 mile walk and everybody is welcome . To date we have raised over €400,000 , thats some testament to the people of Kerry “ says Michael . “There will be fun , music and great Craic , after all its Christmas and Bill wouldn’t want it any other way . . day and gets people out and about ! .The route takes in Rock St , St Brendans Park , Monavalley , Shanakill , Bracker Regan road down Caherslee and back to the Brogue where refreshments will be provided by Bill Kirbys daughter , Fiona, husband Kevin and their fantastic staff and music will be in the air once again ! A star shone brightly way out far in the eastern sky of bethlehem to give guidance and direction to a child being born! The wisest of men followed dictation and began to give gifts of wild imagination. Peace, love, fun, and , adventure. On christmas eve night the sky lit very bright as 2 other stars were called to ignite for the greater being born in a small humble manger .
In a galaxy far , lived these to special stars one named fi, the other named jo. In the truth of twin flames together back then they glowed. They sprinkled and twinkled as the baby was born.
On that christmas eve night fi, & jo lit the world with news of bright delight. The north pole to south, east, and west. Fi danced through the skies excited with life. So bright to the birth of our lord this night.
Now the world had a friend that would be adored.
Jo spent twistils and crackles with marvelous markels that flew through the sky dashed way up high on that christmas eve sky. Fijo together or jofi whichever had been chosen to collide with the wise star that night.
The good news to the world. Love had begun. The chance of existence and freedom was won. In a manger below the beginning just glowed and glowed and glowed.
The divine is now here. Jesus so dear. Omnipresent galore was christmas eves roar.
Every women, man, and child now had there own personal door to walk through to jesus to speak cry, laugh, shout, or rest and snore.
Jo did her duty with the greatest of power to open nature’s truth of earth, wind, water and fire. Her description is one of magical flower dazzling brilliance with amazing power.
Fi did her duty by all the latter above said. Our chance was now born. No more need to mourn. Our message is here. Bright light and great might. Fun, peace, love, and adventure.
Look! Look! Look! Way up high at the stars that light our beautiful skies.

There was a buzz last Friday all around the Horan Centre in Tralee as local business Total Cleaning were holding their ( now ) annual Christmas cooking Demo with Kerrys Celebrity Chef , Mark Doe . As well as special offers , tasties , refreshments , callers to the store had the opportunity to support one of Kerrys hardworking and deserving support services . “ People were so generous on the day to our Charity Partner Adapt , Kerrys Refuge for women and we are all so appreciative of this “ said Kate Brosnan from Total Cleaning . “ All donations and proceeds from todays sales went directly to Adapt . We would also like to thank everyone else who dropped in with donations before and after the event , who couldn’t make it on the day “
New booklet celebrates nature and wildlife
at Tralee Bay Wetlands Ecology Centre

A new booklet and nature trail at Tralee Bay Wetlands has just been launched, encouraging young and old alike to take some time to explore the wildlife that can be found all around us.
Many of Ireland’s native species are in decline so to help engage the local community with the species that can be found locally, Tralee Bay Wetlands has developed a wildlife booklet and nature trail to guide people through the wildlife on the grounds of the wetlands. The A5 booklet includes 14 species
found around the Wetlands which play a role in the local ecosystem and which have also featured in Irish heritage. The booklet is available free of charge from the Wetlands Centre and copies will be made available throughout the county’s libraries. Manager of the Tralee Bay Wetlands Centre, Mary O’Connor said: “We wish to thank Philip McSweeny of River Dog Studios who created the trail and the designs and Thomas Canavan, Ecologist at Tralee Bay Wetlands who wrote the book and Kieran Galwey who designed it.
“We are so grateful to Eleanor Turner, Biodiversity Officer with Kerry County Council and the National Parks and Wildlife Service for having this lovely production and we know it will help everyone to
enjoy and engage with nature and our heritage a little more,” said Mary.

Well , has my ‘Cryotherapy experiment in Mario’s Chamber been a success?
Well , the jury is back , its been 6 weeks since I started my Cryotherapy journey in Kerrys only dedicated Cryotherapy Chamber located in Rock st in The Sun Factory Tanning Salon as owned by Mario and his family .
The challenge was to see would this hi tech treatment ( previously known as a very expensive treatment ) , now fantastic value as offered by Mario, have its desired effects on my body , which has quite a ‘high mileage’ in terms of sports played as a young lad and right thru to today as I continue to enjoy a couple of games of 5 aside and 7 aside soccer twice a week in the Sports Complex on the Astro and Cuman Iosef hall in Caherslee ...The only downside is that the games are back to back on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings so very little chance of the body recovering in between or even after the games ...Hence the quest for alternative solutions , both
to prolong my playing career (??) and maximise my enjoyment while playing .
And the verdict thus far ....well , I have had approximately 6 Cryo sessions since the last week in October AND YES ..I do notice a significant effect Cryotherapy has had on my body ...how do I notice ? Initially after each session , I do get a huge feelgood factor as the rush of adrenaline and endorphins circulate around the body , but does the effect stay with me ? Well I have noticed that my joints , muscles , ligaments etc the body in general , all feels looser, more comfortable in myself and the body doesn’t feel as ‘racked ‘ either after the games or the few days after . As I do the delivery of the Tralee Advertiser every Friday ( as does my significant other Colette ) , I quite often would be still feeling the effects of the Tues & Wed games as I rack up the 35000 steps I do every Friday , the body would be ‘ talking to me ‘ a little more , so to speak...But since the Cryo sessions ( 3 min session at approx -160 degrees in the open chamber ) , that discomfort has eased up considerably, and I would have really noticed it taking the stairs on a few delivery outlets , as the knees would be talking to me ...but not so much any more ! 2 points in particular ,,,,prior to October , I had a constant ‘pull’ in my lower back left side for the past 9 months or so ...which has now disappeared ...and I had a tightness in my left quad , as if I was one step away from pulling that muscle ...again its now gone too !
I have experimented with having a session every 2 weeks to see if that works while being manageable ( cost is €50 per session so well worth it ) and so far so good ! So tell Mario that Chris the ‘Soccer player ‘ ( not retired just yet ) sent you and as

Whats happening to my older Sky box ?
Technology
Sky has recently removed several apps that previously enhanced the functionality of its older boxes like Sky+HD, eliminating basic statistical linking features. This move marks the conclusion of 25 years of delivering platform-speci c communication applications via satellite. During its development, Sky provided subscribers with games, email services, and other features, originally requiring a landline connection for full activation.
While most of these services vanished years ago, the interactive capabilities on Sky HD and Sky+HD boxes persisted. However, Sky has now ceased transmitting data to satellites, impacting services like managing accounts, resetting PINs, and con guring remotes. This change a ects the 'services' and 'interactive' menus, rendering options like ‘My Sky,’ ‘Get Sky Things,’ and ‘Help & Support’ non-functional. A ected customers must now visit the Sky website for account-related changes. What hasn't changed?
Notably, Sky Q remains una ected as it doesn't rely on satellite-delivered apps. Instead, it delivers programs via broadband internet. The suspension of communication services excludes speci c eld service activities, ensuring services like red button features from the BBC and additional streams from Sky Sports and TNT Sports remain una ected.
In a separate development, Sky recently reduced available content for tennis enthusiasts on older Sky boxes during the US Open, hinting at potential further limitations on Sky HD boxes. This move aligns with Sky's ongoing withdrawal of support for its older agship boxes, which have seen minimal upgrades in recent years.
Sky's strategy encourages customers to upgrade to newer devices such as the internet-based Sky Stream Puck or Sky Glass TV. Alternatively, customers can opt for an upgrade to Sky Q while maintaining satellite-based reception. This shift underscores Sky's focus on modernized o erings and encourages users to transition to more advanced equipment.

Network Ireland Kerry held their inaugural Christmas party on the 30th of November in the Rose Hotel, Tralee. It was a wonderful evening of celebration and fundraising for their chosen charity partner Recovery Haven Kerry. In only six months Network Ireland Kerry have generated fantastic membership in the local business community and on the evening, they welcomed members and non-members alike.
Tanya O’ Sullivan entertained the crowd on arrival with live music and set the scene for a festive event.
In her capacity as President of Network Ireland Kerry, Linda O’Mahony Logan welcomed those attending. The guest speaker on the evening was Elvira Fernandez Zebo, founder of Sofia Juliette Paris skincare and cosmetics. The former model and wife of Munster rugby
star Simon Zebo, Elvira is a busy Mum of four also has an incredible entrepreneurial talent.
The chosen charity partner for Network Ireland Kerry this year is Recovery Haven, Kerry and to fundraise on the evening there were fantastic spot prizes donated by local businesses and members. On the evening €1475 was raised for Recovery Haven, Kerry and Marisa Reidy from the charity spoke at the event as to how this fundraising makes such a significant impact in the support, they can provide to people in their cancer journey.
Overall, the Christmas party rounded off a wonderful end to 2023 for the committee and its members, as they look to an exciting and ambitious year ahead for the network.

A pall of gloom enveloped Strand Road and beyond on Sunday morning with the sad and disbelieving news of the untimely passing of Brenda Hartnett. Brenda endeared herself to all and sundry with her sunny disposition, good nature, and can-do attitude - she was a staunch Strand Road and Kerry supporter, traveling many a road to cheer on her favorites. The countless tributes on social media are testament to her outgoing personality, popularity, and charm. Her passing leaves a void in the hearts of many but most of all her husband Padraig, daughters Aisling and Aoife, parents Brendan and Mary, and her extended family. The old proverb that “change is the only constant in life” was very much the theme on Friday night last as chairman Haulie Kerins, secretary Tony Corridon, and PRO Pat Flavin all vacated their positions. Both Haulie and Tony were completing seven-year terms, and there were glowing tributes paid to both for their outstanding work during this time. Haulie thanked all those who made his job easier during his time - members, volunteers, fundraisers but most especially his wife Anne and family for their support. Oliver Molloy will succeed Haulie in the chair, and Haulie wished him all the best in the role outlining the long and storied association the Molloy family have with the club. Oliver, for his part, paid tribute to Haulie for his outstanding contribution to the club and expressed his pride at taking the chair. The new executive, which will convene in early 2024, will appoint successors to both Tony and Pat and also announce a new president following the passing of Mossie Kelly earlier this year. Nora Corridon was named Club Woman of the year for her outstanding contribution as PRO of the juvenile club along with her input to the social media platforms in the club; Reggie Griffin was awarded Club Man of the Year for his dedication to the upkeep of both Strand Road and Healy Park ensuring pitches were of the highest standard for all of our teams and visitors.

Stacks opened the scoring with a point from Fiachna Mangan, and two frees from Donagh McKivergan made it a three-point game. Ballymac got their opening point from an Aidan Breen free, followed shortly after by another point from Fiachna Mangan and an Armin Heinrich goal from a Greg Horan pass, making it 1-7 to 0-1.
Vinny Horan scored a Ballymac point, but four unanswered points from Dylan Casey, David Mannix (two), and Greg Horan followed. Joey Nagle scored a great goal just before halftime, making it 2-11 to 0-2.

The club expresses gratitude to Terry Boyle, stepping down from the position of Chairperson but staying on within the club—a valuable asset. Thank you, Terry. Thanks also to Irene Enright, stepping down from the position of Juvenile PRO. Irene’s approachability and attention to detail were commendable. Irene
will stay on within the club for other activities. Joe Costello is taking the position of Coaching Officer for the coming year. Sean Daly will fill the position of Chairperson, known for great attention to detail. The club looks forward to working closely with him. Michael Higgins will take the position of Treasurer. Welcome aboard. Also, Joe Costello is joining as an additional executive member.

A disappointing day for Ballymac, but overall, a great season with a solid Division 1 County League performance and a draw in the Junior Championship final. Ballymac Ladies Club AGM was held on Tuesday, December 28th, 2023.
The Chairperson, Cat McGillycuddy, and Secretary, Deirdre Millane, reflected on the successes of the ladies and girls throughout 2023. Fruitful discussions about the future of the Ladies Club took place, and full notes from the meeting will be available shortly.
