Season’s Greetings from all of us here at The Tralee Advertiser. As 2025 comes to a close, we want to pause, reflect and, most importantly, say a massive thank you to everyone who helped make this another unforgettable year for our FREE weekly magazine, its Online sister publication and hugely popular social media channels and for Tralee itself.

What a NEW, exciting and energising year it has been. Tralee is buzzing with confidence again, and we are proud to be documenting that story week after week. From the continued NEW expansion of Astellas Pharma and MTU, to NEW housing developments being announced at regular intervals, to NEW business announcements and NEW investment, the sense of momentum across the town and wider Kerry region is real and growing. We’ve seen fantastic NEW business developments, including the impressive Abbeycourt offices involving Tommy Walsh, Mike Stack, Orbitus and Stingray Labs, alongside the steady expansion of many long-established local businesses. These small and existing businesses are truly the backbone of Tralee — employing locally, investing locally and believing in the town long before it was fashionable to do so.

Earlier last year, we made a NEW move ourselves. You’ll remember our old tagline, “What’s Happening in Tralee?” We proudly replaced it with “Good News Only!” — a deliberate decision rooted in our belief in the transformative power of positive, community-focused media. At a time when negativity dominates mainstream headlines, we chose a NEW path — and the response has been overwhelmingly positive. There has been no shortage of good news to share. Major projects such as the €330 million Astellas pharmaceutical development, NEW housing at Ballybeggan (former Racecourse lands), Racecourse Road and Ballyard, projects by Fitzgibbon Brothers, Ned O’Shea Costelloe Builders, KPH Housing,to name a few along with the NEW upgrades planned for the AquaDome, hotel expansions and quality refurbishments, all point to a town moving forward with confidence. We’ve also seen the impact of events and festivals grow stronger than ever —the consistent growth of Féile Thrá Lí, producing Tralee Streetfest in August Festival time and the wonderful Christmas celebrations — all driven by tireless leaders & volunteers ( You know who you are !) who deserve enormous credit. Tralee needs even more of this, and we’re confident 2026 will deliver. A special word of thanks to the Chamber Alliance, now entering a NEW chapter under Sandra Rusk as President, supported by an augmented and energetic team working relentlessly for local businesses. Producing The Tralee Advertiser each week is a true team effort. Sebastien bought a smart watch from an online retailer last week.

After charging it up he noticed that the battery life was very poor, about 4 hours. The manufacturer’s website states one should get approximately 3 days from a full charge. He contacted the online store that he bought it from and explained the situation and that he wanted to return it. They said that the warranty was with the manufacturer and there was nothing they could do.

When you buy from businesses based in Ireland or the EU you have strong consumer rights as covered under The Consumer Rights Act 2022. When you buy online, you have the right to the same protections under consumer law as buying in a shop. The Consumer Rights Act 2022 requires that a business supplies a product that: • • • • • •

is fit for the purpose it is normally used for works for a reasonable time with normal use can be used for the purpose the business knew you bought it for matches what is outlined in your contract matches any descriptions or samples you saw is installed correctly by the business – when it applies

When a good has a fault, you can decide if you want a repair or replacement. It should be provided by the retailer within a reasonable time, without significant inconvenience to you and free of charge. If a business does not fix your issue as set out in the Consumer Rights Act 2022, you can take other actions.

You should always send a final formal written complaint to the business and consider their response before you take your next steps.

You must inform the business in writing that you are cancelling the purchase within 14 days. You have a further 14 days to return the goods to the business, at their expense and without undue delay. The business must give you a refund within 14 days. If the supplier will not refund your money and you paid using a credit or debit card, your card provider – usually your bank – may agree to reverse the transaction. This is called a chargeback.

Finally if you have not received a satisfactory response from the retailer you can use the small claims procedure to resolve certain types of disputes. The small claims procedure can assist you to resolve a dispute for up to €2,000, generally without a solicitor. The application fee is €25 and you can either make an application online or at your local District Court office. If the supplier is elsewhere in the EU one can use the European Small Claims procedure which has a limit of €5000. For Irish purchases over €2,000 it would be advertisable to contact your solicitor.

Through the Lens of a Legend: John Cleary’s Latest GAA Tribute Lands for Christmas Few photographers have captured the heart and heritage of Kerry quite like John Cleary, the renowned Tralee lensman whose work has become part of the county’s visual history.

Kerry ETB Highlights Student Creativity in Christmas Card Competition

Kerry Education and Training Board (Kerry ETB) has announced the winners of its annual Christmas Card Competition, celebrating student creativity while highlighting the importance of respect, one of the organisation’s core values. This year’s competition invited entries from students across Kerry ETB’s eight post-primary schools, encouraging learners to reflect artistically on the theme Respect at a time when empathy, understanding and fairness feel particularly meaningful.

The overall winner is Ella O’Neill, a second-year student from Coláiste na Sceilge, whose artwork will feature on Kerry ETB’s official Christmas card for 2025. Ella was supported by her Art teacher, Fiona Holly. The runners-up were Emmy O’Donoghue, a first-year student from Killarney Community College, supported by Art teacher Michelle Mahony, and Katarzyna Witkowska, a fifth-year student from Coláiste na Ríochta, supported by Art teacher

Commenting on the competition, Ann O’Dwyer, Chief Executive of Kerry ETB, praised the depth of thought shown by the students.

She noted that respect is a principle Kerry ETB strives to nurture in every learner and learning environment, adding that the artwork captured themes of listening, fairness, empathy and openness in a powerful and timely way. She said Christmas offers an ideal moment to reflect on these values and commended the students for expressing them so creatively.

The competition encouraged participants to explore respect within their schools and communities, as well as in a wider global context. Judges remarked on the strong sense of insight, compassion and imagination evident across the entries.

Kerry Siblings Shine at MTU Awards

Munster Technological University (MTU) Kerry Campus celebrated outstanding academic achievement this December as part of its annual Student Awards ceremony, with siblings from Kerry, Milo and Ava Cronin, receiving top honours on the night.

The prestigious Tom McEllistrim Scholarship, awarded to the student with the highest Leaving Certificate points across eligible programmes, was presented to Milo Cronin, a first-year student currently studying BSc in Agricultural Science at MTU Kerry. The award recognises exceptional academic excellence and supports students embarking on key disciplines vital to the region.

In an impressive family achievement, Milo’s sister Ava Cronin was also

recognised during the ceremony.

Ava received the award for Highest GPA in the Pharmacy Technician programme and is now continuing her studies in Pharmacy Management and Practice. Notably, Ava herself was a recipient of the Tom McEllistrim Scholarship two years ago, making the Cronin family one of the rare cases where two siblings have received this distinguished honour.

Dr Eilish Broderick, Head of the Department of Biological and Pharmaceutical Sciences at MTU Kerry Campus, praised the siblings’ success, noting that their achievements reflect both personal dedication and the quality of education offered at MTU Kerry.

Warriors Young Guns Shot Down by Neptune Garvey’s Tralee Warriors Men’s U20s suffered their first defeat of the league season as they went down 96–72 to Neptune in Round 3 at Neptune Stadium on Saturday, the game serving as the curtain-raiser to the Super League clash between the sides.

An understrength Warriors outfit, missing key players including Ryan Sheehy and David Lucid, made a positive start. Scores from Jamie Burke, Samson Abubakar, Seán Cantwell and Liam O’Rahilly helped the visitors race into a 17–12 lead midway through the opening quarter. However, Neptune responded emphatically, unleashing a devastating 22-point unanswered run through Pharrell Osagie, Wesley Delany, Dylan O’Rourke and Akitoye Coker. A late Cantwell basket halted

the surge, but Neptune still led 36–19 at the end of the first quarter.

The Warriors were far more competitive in the second period.

Although Neptune extended their advantage early, Burke and Abubakar found scores inside, while Cantwell and O’Rahilly hit from long range to reduce the deficit to 51–39 at the break.

Neptune took control in the third quarter, with Delany catching fire from beyond the arc to stretch the lead to 78–56. Despite late efforts from Kiefer Yiadom and Burke, Neptune closed out the game comfortably, Delany finishing with an outstanding shooting display.

Warriors now turn their attention to a local derby against St Mary’s Castleisland next Saturday at Moyderwell Gym.

MTU & Astellas partner up to inspire Primary schools Munster Technological University (MTU) has partnered with Astellas Pharma to deliver STEM Link – Linking Young Innovators and Industry, an educational initiative aimed at inspiring primary school pupils to explore science, technology, engineering and mathematics. As part of the programme, representatives from both organisations visited Listellick National School, where pupils took part in an engaging, handson workshop designed to spark curiosity and encourage learning through experimentation.

During the visit, pupils were encouraged to ask questions, explore scientific ideas and see how STEM connects to everyday life. The interactive activities gave students a practical insight into real-world science while introducing them to two major organisations located

close to their school.

Speaking following the event, Jeremiah Hayes of Astellas Pharma said the company was proud to support initiatives that foster an early interest in STEM. He highlighted the importance of primary education in laying the foundations for future innovation and noted that strong links between industry and education help equip young people with the skills needed in a rapidly evolving world. He added that collaboration with local schools strengthens communities and supports a sustainable future for healthcare and technology.

Dr Eilish Broderick, Head of the Department of Biological and Pharmaceutical Sciences at MTU, said the university was delighted to collaborate with Astellas on the initiative. She explained that the aim was to ignite pupils’ natural curiosity

through fun, hands-on experiments and to show that STEM is creative, collaborative and open to everyone.

The successful collaboration highlights the important role industry and academia play in

nurturing young talent and building a strong pipeline for future innovation in the region.

Cara Credit Union Backs Students with €10,500 in Awards Cara Credit Union has announced the recipients of its 2025 Education Awards and Dan Kellegher Memorial Awards, providing €10,500 in financial support to students pursuing further and higher education. Seven students were each awarded €1,500 to help ease the cost of study across PLC, third-level, apprenticeship and postgraduate programmes.

The Education Awards are open to full-time PLC students, undergraduates and apprentices, while the Dan Kellegher Memorial Awards support postgraduate learners. Winners were selected by random draw from eligible

applicants.

This year’s Dan Kellegher Memorial Award recipients are Lia O’Connell (Masters in Biomedical Engineering) and Laura Jane Moriarty (MA in Creative Psychotherapy and Play Therapy). Education Award winners are Sean O’Donnell (Applied Economics), Anthony Nathan Costello (Interaction Design), Lucia O’Connor (Product Design), Seán Ó Dálaigh (Engineering) and Éabha Murphy (BA World Languages).

For example, No. 14 was heavily involved in last summer’s ANAM festival and now offers a monthly comedy night hosted by Tralee’s very own Ronan Grace. Minister Foley welcomes minor works grants and ICT grants worth €2.2 million for Kerry schools

Minister for Children, Disability and Equality and Kerry T.D Norma Foley has welcomed confirmation of the payment of minor works grants and ICT grants worth €2.2 million for Kerry schools.

Minor works grants worth €1.1 million are being paid this month to primary, post-primary and special schools in Kerry for the forthcoming 2026/2027 school year while Kerry schools will also receive €1.1 million in ICT grants for the current

2025/2026 school year.

Minister Foley said: “As Minister for Children, I welcome €2.2 million in funding for Kerry Schools. The €1.1 million in ICT funding will continue to support our schools to harness technology and improve teaching and learning in the classroom. The €1.1 million minor works grant is also an important resource for the management and upkeep of school buildings in Kerry.”

Answers and Art: Kilflynn Cancer Quiz Turns 21 This December, the Kilflynn Cancer Support Group’s much-loved Christmas Table Quiz celebrates a major milestone, marking its 21st anniversary. First established in 2004

by Fr Pat O’Donnell, himself a cancer survivor, the quiz has grown into one of the community’s most successful and enduring fundraising events.

Over the past two decades, it has raised almost €100,000 in support of cancer charities across the Munster region.

In recent years, all proceeds from the quiz have been directed to three Tralee-based organisations: Recovery Haven, Kerry Cancer Support and Kerry Hospice. John Flaherty, who has served as quizmaster since the very first event, credits the success of that inaugural night for ensuring

the quiz became an annual fixture.

He notes that while it has always been an important fundraiser, it has also evolved into a much-anticipated social occasion, particularly for those returning home at Christmas to reconnect with family and friends.

The quiz is only part of the evening’s entertainment, with raffles and auctions traditionally playing a key role in boosting funds raised.

This year, organisers are delighted to auction several pieces of artwork donated by local artists.

Kilflynn resident Karen Downs has contributed three works, while her friend Liz Browne has donated an original oil painting. Both artists are members of the Tralee Art Group and hope their work will attract bids in aid of these worthy causes.

Launch of Community Support Fund 2026

The Community Support Fund 2026 (Ciste Tacaíochta Pobail 2026) was officially launched on Friday, 12 December 2025, by the Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr. Michael Foley, together with Paul Neary, Director of Community, Climate Action and Operational Services, and Bridget Fitzgerald, Senior Executive Officer for Corporate Affairs.

Following the launch, Kerry County Council has opened a call for applications under the 2026 scheme, which provides financial support to a wide range of community-based projects and initiatives throughout County Kerry. The fund is aimed at strengthening local communities and supporting initiatives that deliver clear benefits at local level.

Applications are invited from voluntary and non-profit organisations whose primary purpose is the development, promotion or support of their local community, or the delivery

of projects that benefit specific community groups. All applications must fall within one of five defined categories: Connected, Inclusive and Resilient Communities; Community Tidy Towns Initiatives, Amenity Projects and Environmentally Sustainable Projects; Community Economic Innovation; CommunityBased Tourism, Festivals and Events; and Local Community Safety Initiatives.

A total of €850,000 has been allocated for the 2026 fund, which is now in its twelfth year. Since its introduction, the scheme has distributed millions of euro to community and voluntary groups across the county, supporting the upgrading of facilities, the delivery of local projects and the enhancement of essential services.

Cahill Welcomes €2.03m Boost for Kerry ETB Fianna Fáil TD for County Kerry, Michael Cahill, has welcomed confirmation of €2,030,000 in funding for Kerry Education and Training Board (ETB), announced by the Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, James Lawless TD. The funding will support a range of essential works across Kerry ETB facilities, including maintenance and health and safety upgrades, accessibility improvements, ICT and equipment modernisation, and enhanced energy efficiency measures. It will also provide specialist equipment to help upskill staff and learners in key growth sectors such as construction, biopharmaceuticals and MedTech.

The investment forms part of the Government’s continued commitment to strengthening Ireland’s Further Education and Training (FET) sector, ensuring learners and staff have access to modern, high-quality facilities while helping ETBs respond to both local and national skills needs.

Deputy Cahill said Kerry ETB plays a vital role in education and training across the county, adding that the funding will allow for important upgrades that improve safety, access and learning outcomes.

He noted that the investment will help empower learners, staff and communities now and into the future.

The allocation also includes support

through the Green Devolved Capital Grant, assisting Kerry ETB in meeting national energy efficiency and decarbonisation targets through

measures such as advanced utility metering.

First Section Of South Kerry

Greenway Opens To Public

3.1km section of greenway offers first taste of Glenbeigh to Reenard amenity Members of the public will be able to experience and enjoy the South Kerry Greenway for the very first time this week as the first completed section of the new amenity opens to the public.

From Friday, 19 December, a 3.1km section of the greenway between the old Kells Railway Station and Golden’s Shop at Kells will be fully accessible to pedestrians and cyclists. The completion of the Kells section of the South Kerry Greenway comes as work continues on the construction and completion of other parts of the facility. It is anticipated that the next section of

the greenway – from the trailhead at Glenbeigh through Curra Wood and on to the road overbridge at Mountain Stage (5km) – will open to the public in early summer 2026.

The greenway will be an all-weather and all-seasons amenity and offers a beautiful facility in a breathtaking location to locals and visitors alike.’

Kerry FC Secure NY based Back-of-Jersey Sponsor for 2026 Kerry FC has announced a new back-of-jersey sponsorship agreement with New York City– based Dualcore Construction Management ahead of the 2026 season. Under the partnership, the Dualcore logo will appear prominently on the back of every Kerry FC jersey, positioned above the player name and number. The deal marks Dualcore’s first year

sponsoring the club and represents Kerry FC’s first jersey sponsorship with an international partner.

Dualcore Construction Management is a construction and development firm operating throughout New York City and surrounding areas, specialising in high-end residential and commercial projects. The company is led by Kerry native Conor Moran, who

grew up in Cahersiveen before relocating to New York in 2012, where he has since established and grown the business.

Speaking about the partnership, Conor Moran said he was proud to support his home county club.

He noted that football has always been a passion of his and that being able to give back to Kerry through Dualcore is particularly meaningful. He added that Dualcore and Kerry FC share similar values, describing both as young, ambitious organisations with a strong focus on growth and long-term development.

Kerry FC General Manager Sean O’Keeffe welcomed the new partnership, saying the club was delighted to secure Dualcore Construction Management as a jersey sponsor for the 2026 season.

He highlighted the significance of working with a partner that has deep Kerry roots, while also noting the importance of securing the club’s first international jersey sponsor as a sign of Kerry FC’s growing profile.

The sponsorship underlines Kerry FC’s ambition to align with progressive organisations that share its commitment to community, professionalism and sustainable development, while continuing to expand its reach beyond Ireland.

Kerry County Council and MTU Kerry Unite to Drive Community Climate Innovation

Kerry County Council and Munster Technological University (MTU) Kerry have joined forces to strengthen community-based climate innovation through Ireland’s Knowledge Centre for Carbon, Climate and Community Action (IKC3). The initiative was highlighted at the Community-Based Climate Innovation Summit, hosted by IKC3 at Trinity College Dublin, which showcased emerging communityled climate solutions from across the country and provided a national platform for collaboration between local authorities, industry, communities and educators.

The summit marked the conclusion of an intensive three-month Community-Based Climate Innovation programme developed

by IKC3 in partnership with county councils. The programme has been delivered in Kerry, Waterford, Meath, South Dublin and Wicklow, with further expansion planned. Rather than adopting a traditional topdown approach, the programme embedded academic facilitators within communities, allowing local

groups to identify priorities and cocreate practical, place-based climate solutions.

Speakers at the event included Eve Savage of MTU, who outlined the impact of Human Capital Initiative funding in enabling deep collaboration with communities and local authorities. Cathy Fisher, Climate Action Officer with Kerry County Council, highlighted the role of councils in supporting climate resilience, while contributions from

Liz Maher of INSPIRED and Lisa Fingleton of Brilliant Ballybunion showcased inclusive education, creativity and regenerative approaches to sustainability.

Dr Helena McMahon, Director of IKC3, said the programme addressed a national skills gap by building climate innovation capacity through collaboration. The summit demonstrated growing momentum in Kerry to place communities at the heart of climate action, reinforcing

New Kerry FC Kits Land for Christmas Kerry FC fans have an extra reason to celebrate this festive season as Kerry Airport has confirmed it will continue as lead sponsor of the club for the 2026 campaign. Marking the announcement in style, Kerry FC’s brand-new home and away kits made a symbolic arrival in the airport’s Arrivals Hall just in time for Christmas.

Supporters who thrilled to Kerry FC’s memorable run to the FAI Cup semifinal in 2025 can now show their colours with pride in the striking new designs. The 2026 home kit features a classic green base accented with a stylish white and gold stripe, while the away kit offers a bold black look, finished with a gold-plated crest and elegant trim.

Commenting on the renewed partnership, Kerry Airport Ireland Chief Financial Officer Basil Sheerin praised the club’s rapid rise and strong community support, noting how the team’s performances have inspired fans across the county. He highlighted the importance of sport in bringing communities together and expressed pride in continuing the airport’s support of Kerry FC into 2026.

Kerry FC General Manager Sean O’Keeffe welcomed the extension of the lead sponsorship, saying the partnership reflects the shared success of both organisations in 2025. He added that launching the kits at the airport was a fitting way to celebrate a record year and look ahead to an exciting season.

Minister Foley welcomes €85,000 in funding for animal welfare groups in Kerry Minister for Children, Disability, Equality and Kerry T.D Norma Foley has welcomed confirmation of over €85,000 in funding for animal welfare groups in Kerry The funding under the Animal Welfare Grants Programme is going to organisations that have a proven track record in rehoming, providing education to the public on animal welfare and guidance to prevent welfare problems in the future.

The animal welfare organisations in Kerry which will benefit from the

funding are Animal Help Net Kerry (€30,000), Kerry Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (€20,188), Kenmare Locality Animal Welfare Society (€20,000) and (Homes for Unwanted Greyhounds in Kerry (€15,000).

Minister Foley said: “This funding is a recognition of the great work done by staff and volunteers in these organisations to support the rehousing and care of animals in Kerry and promote awareness about animal welfare.”

Mayor Michael brings it Home for Christmas Mayor of Kerry, Cllr Michael Foley, who resides in Ballylongford,

brought the final Kerry County Council meeting of the year to his home community today, 12 December 2025. While Cllr Foley usually chairs official council sessions at the County Buildings in Tralee, it is tradition for the year’s concluding meeting to be held in the Mayor’s local area.

This year, the gathering took place in the parish hall in Ballylongford, offering local residents a unique opportunity to see council business conducted on their doorstep and highlighting the Mayor’s continued connection and commitment to his home community.

TRALEE DISTRICT BOARD AGM HELD AND OFFICERS ELECTED FOR 2026 The Annual General Meeting of the Tralee District Board took place on Friday, December 5th, at 7.30pm in the Upstairs Lounge of the John Mitchels Complex, Ballyseedy. The meeting was well attended, with Chairpersons, Secretaries and Club Delegates from across the district present.

Following the completion of the AGM business, officers for the 2026 season were elected. John Rice was voted in as Chairman, with Eamon Griffin elected Vice-Chairman. John Slattery was appointed Secretary, while Dan Walsh was elected Assistant Secretary.

Pat McAuliffe will serve as Treasurer for the coming year, with John Slattery also taking on the role of Assistant Treasurer.

Eamon Browne was appointed Public Relations Officer, and Tom Herlihy was elected Oifigeach Cultúir & Gaeilge. The role of Children’s Officer will be filled by Dan Walsh.

John Breen was elected as County Board Delegate, while Seán Kissane and John Slattery will act as Referees’ Officers.

John McEniry was appointed County CCC Delegate.

The Board wished all newly elected officers every success in their roles for the year ahead.
