Huge Ned O’Shea development gets planning green light!

Ned O’Shea Construction have received a green light from Kerry County Council for a €70m, 235home, Large Scale Residential Development (LRD) in Lisloose, Tralee, Co. Kerry.

The project encompasses a diverse range of housing options, including 2, 3, and 4-bedroom houses, along with 1 and 2-bedroom apartments, strategically designed for sustainable living within lush green spaces. Additionally, plans feature a childcare facility and a small commercial unit. Nestled along the Bracker O’Regan Road, with access to the newly unveiled Tralee-Fenit Greenway, this development promises to address the region’s pressing housing needs. Kerry County Council’s approval comes with certain conditions, with a big focus on infrastructural development:

• Contributions of almost €1million to Kerry County Council (Planning Authority) are earmarked for Roads & Transport, Community &

Amenity infrastructure, and public facilities benefiting the proposed development. This includes contribution towards the design and upgrade of the Active Travel infrastructure along the Bracker O’Regan Road and the public road networks local to the development.

• Stringent measures include an updated Traffic and Transport Assessment, enhanced road infrastructure, pedestrian & cyclist safety, and the provision of a Right Turn Lane or other suitable junction treatment at the developments proposed junction with the Bracker O’Regan Road.

• A dedicated environmental manager will need to be assigned to oversee project compliance.

• A mandatory 20m preservation zone will be required around the historic ringfort monument.

has said that the company are optimistic that they can comply with the conditions set-out by Kerry County Council. “Securing planning permission from Kerry County Council is a significant milestone for us, and we’re thrilled about the approval. However, there are a few hurdles ahead that we’re committed to overcoming. We’re optimistic about meeting the conditions outlined by Kerry County Council. Specifically, we’ll be conducting additional traffic and transport assessments during peak school-time traffic, aiming to address concerns raised by nearby neighbourhoods. Our goal is to ensure that our development aligns harmoniously with the community.”

The company’s director, James O’Shea, expressed his gratitude about the approval “235-New Homes is a significant development for the town of Tralee and is much needed in the community. We are thankful to the Kerry County Council Planning office and all the

consultants that worked diligently with us on the planning submission”.

James is now leading the company into the future, having worked alongside his father for nearly four decades, carrying forward the values and principles that have defined Ned O’Shea Construction since its inception.

Ned O’Shea Construction anticipates the timeline for construction will take approximately 4 years, and plan to build the development in four phases.

If there is no appeal against Kerry County Council’s decision, after a period of 4 weeks, a grant of Permission in accordance with the decision will be issued.

Tralee Chamber’s annual Presidents Lunch at the Rose Hotel highlighted the town’s economic momentum and academic achievements. Newly elected President Stephen Stack, alongside keynote speakers David Walsh, CEO of Halocare, and MTU President Prof. Maggie Cusack, addressed a sold-out audience.

Colette O’Connor, CEO of Tralee Chamber, reported a 78% growth in membership in 2023, with support for seven local festivals and events. The Chamber actively lobbied for increased connectivity from Kerry

Airport and had representation on the Shannon Estuary Taskforce Tourism sub-group. Special recognition was given to Tralee Tidy Town Committee and the local business community.

President Stephen Stack expressed enthusiasm for the Astellas project, foreseeing it as a transformative force for Tralee. He commended Kerry County Council for enhancing infrastructure to pave the way for progressive developments, stating that Tralee is positioned for positive transformation.

Highlighting Tralee as a thriving university town and a key economic driver in the South-West, Stack affirmed his commitment to building on the foundation laid by his predecessor, Nathan McDonnell. Distinguished speakers included Prof. Maggie Cusack, who envisioned MTU as the “first choice for students” with a focus on continuous excellence.

Guest speaker David Walsh from Netwatch and HaloCare shared insights on navigating change in businesses, emphasizing the

role of innovation and culture. He encouraged the recruitment of positive, ambitious individuals who align with core values. The event served as a platform for stakeholders to understand the Chamber’s initiatives, contributors, and ambitious plans for 2024, with a festive focus on the Christmas in Tralee program.

Miss Kerry Leah Raises €750 For Kerry Mental Health Association

Leah Galloway, crowned MISS Kerry 2023 and a first-year mental health nursing student at MTU Kerry, recently presented a €750 cheque to Kerry Mental Health Association, her chosen charity partner for her reign. Over half of the funds were raised online at www.KerryMentalHealth. ie/donate, with the remainder generated through a coffee morning at Tralee Bay Wetlands’ Lakeside Café on #TieDayFriday.

Expressing her passion for mental health, Leah, a Ballyheigue resident, emphasized her desire to assist vulnerable individuals through her chosen course. The fundraising journey with Kerry Mental Health Association was described as amazing, with Leah witnessing strong community support.

Renowned Kerry fashion designer Don O’Neill, also from Ballyheigue, joined Leah at the coffee morning attended by classmates, family, friends, and Lakeside Café patrons. Leah plans to organize another fundraising event in 2024, collaborating with fellow nursing students at MTU Kerry.

John Drummey, General Manager of Kerry Mental Health Association, expressed gratitude for Leah’s choice, emphasizing her commitment to supporting those facing mental health challenges. The funds raised will contribute to the #TieDayFriday campaign, financing free and affordable mental health first aid training in Kerry. Santa’s Giant Elf on the Loose Sparks Community Search with €1000 Reward!

In a festive twist that has captured the imagination of the people of Tralee, one of Santa’s beloved elves, Ernie, has mysteriously gone missing from the North Pole. Responding swiftly to this festive emergency, Tralee Chamber has issued an urgent appeal to the community, seeking their assistance in locating the missing Elf, offering a reward of a €1000 Gift Voucher from Corcoran’s Furniture and Carpets.

Eyewitness reports place Ernie the elf as standing at an astonishing 3 meters tall and adorned in vibrant red clothing complete with a Santa hat. The elf was last seen near the University Hospital Kerry. While

the elf doesn’t pose any danger and is known for spreading festive cheer, the community is urged to report any sightings immediately by sharing a photo on their social media platforms and tagging Tralee Chamber.

Tralee Chamber, in partnership with Corcoran’s Furniture & Carpets, is offering a €1000 gift voucher as a reward for helping find Ernie the Elf. Tralee Chamber in partnership with Kerry County Council is delighted to announce the return of the ‘Christmas Parade’ in partnership with Sean Murphy Electrical and the local business community to its Christmas in Tralee Festive Programme. Set to captivate spectators from 2pm this Saturday, December 2nd, and Sunday, December 17th, this extraordinary event promises to bring joy and wonder to families throughout Tralee.

As the festive spirit takes centre stage in Tralee, ‘Santa’s Magical Fairytale Parade’ is poised to be a visual feast that will wind its way through Pembroke Street, down Rock Street, Russell Street, along The Mall and culminate in a festive celebration in The Square. Speaking on the announcement of the parade, Colette O’Connor, Tralee Chamber CEO commented: “The parade is a pivotal addition to Tralee’s festive calendar, contributing to our town’s reputation as a Christmas destination while also exemplifying the community spirit that makes

Tralee so special. We believe it will not only create magical moments for families but also showcase our town’s charm, bolstered by the generous support of local businesses. This event adds another layer of festive magic to Tralee, ensuring it remains a must-visit destination during the Christmas season.”

The much-anticipated parade is set to feature beloved fairytale characters, festive floats and lively dancers with attendees encountering the Snow King and Queen, Disney Fairytale Princesses, Dancing Toy Soldiers, Fairy Twinkle, Elf companions, the whimsical Gingerbread Man, Giant Polar Bears and, of course, Santa Claus himself. Free treats will be distributed along the parade route, inviting the entire community to join in the celebration and create cherished memories with family and friends.

The 10th annual Radio Kerry Christmas Jumper Day, taking place on December 8th, is pleased to welcome Quinlan’s Fish as its 2023 radio and online partner. U16 GIRLS:

A lovely evening had by all last Saturday night to mark the hard work put in by all team members throughout the year. These ladies started training way back in March at the Sports Complex. They always had a great attitude. A fantastic bunch of young ladies! Well done to everyone!

U14 AND U16 END OF SEASON:

A very enjoyable day was had by all at Zipit, Farran, Co. Cork, last Saturday. This was our end of season trip for our U14s and U16s. It’s fair to say that both teams had a great workout, but for a change, it wasn’t on the pitch.

Minor Boys

Our Minors had their medal presentation on Sunday evening in O’Riadas; they were presented with their Central Region and Town Board medals. Our senior Minors were presented with a trophy to mark the end of their time with Coiste na Og. Health and Wellbeing Social basketball now back. Senior Hurling Status Achieved

Parnells’ motion to join the Kerry Senior Hurling Championship was passed. After 5 years playing at Intermediate level in Kerry, this is a great achievement for the club, and Tralee will once again have a team at the top table of Kerry hurling after a gap of over 100 years.

North Kerry Junior League Final Tralee Parnells 0-14 Lixnaw 1-16 In Lixnaw last Sunday, the muchdelayed North Kerry Junior League Final was played. In front of a large and vocal home crowd, the home team came out on top after a tough battle. The sides were level at half time, Parnells 0-8 Lixnaw 1-5, but with the benefit of the breeze, Lixnaw pulled away in the second half with some fine point scoring. Tralee Parnells take on Kenmare in the final of the South Kerry Hurling Championship next Saturday afternoon, venue to be confirmed. U16s

Tralee Parnells 2-12 Crotta 2-14

At the second time of asking, the North Kerry U16 Semi-final was played last Sunday morning in Crotta, where the crowd was treated to a great game of hurling with fine scores on both sides. Parnells took a 2 point lead in at half time, but Crotta emerged for the second half really fired up.

U21s

The combined Parnells/Kilmoyley U21 team received a walkover from Lixnaw last weekend in the North Kerry Championship and is now into the semi-final where they will play Crotta. At the time of writing, this is due to be played next weekend, date and time to be confirmed.

Cara Credit Union celebrates local young artists

Over 200 attendees filled Manor West Hotel, Tralee, for Cara Credit Union’s Prize Giving Night, generating an atmosphere of excitement. The event celebrated winners and participants from Tralee, Castleisland, Killorglin, Ballyduff, and Causeway in the Credit Union Art Competition, themed ‘Me and My Community.’ All age groups, from under 7’s to adults, showcased excellent execution of the theme.

Siobhan Donnelly, Marketing Manager of Cara Credit Union, expressed the significance of Prize Giving Night in recognizing the commitment of students, parents, teachers, and schools to youth activities. Hi, my name is DJ Kelleher and this is my testimonial about starting National Learning Network Tralee, how it helped me improve myself and how it helped me get a job in Mr. Price in Killarney.

Before going to the National Learning Network in Tralee, Clash Road, Co. Kerry, I was a timid, shy young man lacking in self-conﬁdence in myself and my abilities. However, after going to the National Learning Network, I have made not just improvements in myself, but also in my social and interaction skills which helped me make lots of new friends there as well. The courses that I did there were Directions and Introductory Skills Training. I also sampled other courses like Catering, Retail, Employer Based Training, Applied Information Technology and Blended Learning.

I started Directions in 2018, it was a three-year course, with the ﬁve days going to the college. During that time it gave me the opportunity to go on a journey to ﬁnd myself and to discover what is it that I want to do in life. Directions has even interest me in learning how to paint and to write poetry. The instructors, staff workers and the other students, who I became friends with, were nice to me, and they always encouraged and challenged me to try something new like cooking, baking and dusting a room.

In 2021, I started my next course called Introductory Skills Training (IST for short), It was a year and a half course with Monday to Wednesday going to the college and Thursday and Friday going on work experience. This course covers everything you need to know about working with others, going out into the workplace and how to make time for work and myself. I made lots of new friends both in this course and out in the workplace, which was in Mr. Price in Killarney, who all helped me to improve myself and to help me become a better person. Thanks to my new friends, the NLN instructors and1 Mr. Price Staff Team, I got myself full time job working twenty one hours a week.

I would like to thank all of National Learning Network Tralee and Mr. Price for helping me to get where I am today and for those who are looking where to go next for further education, I highly recommend National Learning Network Tralee for their positive, helping and hardworking spirit or if its where to go to ﬁnd work, I also highly recommend Mr. Price Killarney for their different communication and teamworking techniques.
