Sean is wondering if he can get rid of a lot of spare wood he has lying around the place in a bonfire at the back of his premises.
Backyard burning was identified as a real problem in 2005 due to the dioxins released when burning waste. It has been heightened by the fact that a lot of waste including wood consists of treated products which can generate particularly noxious fumes when burnt. As a result, there are three laws preventing backyard burning. The Air pollution act 1987 prohibits discharge of emissions that are a nuisance. Section 32 of the Waste Management Act 1996 prohibits disposing of waste in a manner likely to cause air pollution. The Waste Management (Prohibition of Waste Disposal by burning) Regulations 2009 explicitly prohibited disposing of waste by uncontrolled burning including within one’s own dwelling and brought in fines of up to €3000. As a result of these regulations the following are offences: burning any type of waste including garden waste, use of domestic incinerators, burning household waste in stoves or open fires. However untreated or uncontaminated wood waste and other similar materials can be used in barbeques for the purpose of cooking food. So, Sean might be able to use some of this spare wood if untreated in his barbeque for cooking his sausages and steaks.
In relation to Halloween bonfires these are only permissible at events allowed by the local authority and again should use only be untreated or uncontaminated wood or similar materials. A local sports club or other organisation if they wish to have a bonfire should apply to the local authority for permission. They should act responsbility if they get this permission to only use untreated or uncontaminated waste/wood. Farmers can apply to burn untreated/uncontaminated wood, trees, trimmings, leaves, bushes, or other similar materials generated because of agricultural practice but only as a final measure where they have looked at reuse, reduce and recycle and where they have in place adequate measures to prevent a nuisance and no accelerants are used. The must notify the local authority with a statutory notice. A neighbour could complain to the local authority in relation to Sean if he did go ahead with backyard burning and it could result in a fine etc.

Minister for Education and Kerry T.D Norma Foley has welcomed funding of almost €1 million for a new flood relief scheme for Listowel.
The funding of €955,000 will be used for flood defences to protect some 50 properties at risk from flooding at Clieveragh in Listowel. This area of Listowel has experienced significant flooding in 2009, 2012, 2014, 2015 and again
this summer.
The scheme will include the construction of a 3.7 acre pond to hold storm water during periods of heavy rainfall. The water will then be released slowly into a new open channel which will connect to the Clieveragh watercourse to the south. Education Minister Norma Foley said:
“I welcome the confirmation from the Office of Public Works that almost one million euro is being provided flood relief scheme for Clieveragh has been approved. This has been an ongoing and difficult issue for this area and today’s funding announcement is a positive development and I look forward to this project being delivered as soon as possible.”

Kerry County Council secured planning permission for the flood relief scheme in 2019 with a Part 8 planning application. Construction is expected to last up to 12 months.

University Hospital Kerry (UHK) proudly announces the official opening of its newly renovated Interim Oncology Day Ward, situated in the reconfigured space of the Ratoo Ward. Demonstrating a steadfast commitment to patient-centric care, this dedicated medical oncology unit embodies a modern, bright, and compassionate environment that prioritizes privacy and a welcoming atmosphere for patients. The meticulous planning, led by UHK’s teams in collaboration with the CUH Oncology Directorate and HSE Estates, places patient journeys at the forefront of the design. Valuable input from patients has been instrumental in shaping the purpose-built space, with ‘Comfort for Chemo Kerry’ charity contributing funding for specialized relaxing treatment chairs, enhancing comfort during treatment. Since initiating its oncology service in 2001 with 831 patients, UHK now handles over 220 new patients annually, with more than 3,000
patients under ongoing surveillance. The demand for cancer treatments has surged, prompting a 30% increase in patients receiving infusional anti-cancer treatment since 2019. In response, the Interim Unit boasts a 40% capacity increase, facilitating a broader spectrum of treatments, including innovative therapies like immunotherapy. This expansion addresses current growth and allows for flexible scheduling and urgent treatments. While the Interim Unit meets immediate needs, UHK is actively working on a permanent stand-alone oncology unit at the design stage. Dr. Sinead Noonan, Consultant Medical Oncologist, emphasizes the importance of focusing on this future-proofed facility to accommodate the projected doubling of patient numbers over the next decade, ensuring safe, timely, and evidence-based care. The UHK Management Team expresses gratitude to Palliative Care Services, staff members from

Ratoo Ward, and dedicated teams in Estates, Maintenance, and Building Contractors for their support. Mary Fitzgerald commends the staff’s tireless efforts in ensuring a smooth transition to the new interim Unit, guaranteeing that patients receive the necessary care in their updated surroundings. The hospital extends
heartfelt thanks to the people of Kerry, acknowledging their unwavering support in bringing holistic, patient-centered oncology care closer to home.

An Irish dad calls his son in London the day before Christmas Eve and says, “I hate to ruin your day but I have to tell you that your mother and I are divorcing.”
Long
“Dad, what are you talking about?” the son screams.
“We can’t stand the sight of each other any longer,” the father says. “We’re sick of each other and I’m sick of talking about this, so you call your sister in Leeds and tell her.”
The son calls his sister, who explodes on the phone. “Like heck they’re getting divorced!”she shouts, “I’ll take care of this!”
She calls Ireland immediately, and screams at her father, “You are NOT getting divorced. Don’t do a single thing until I get there. I’m calling my brother back, and we’ll both be there tomorrow. Until then, don’t do a thing, DO YOU HEAR ME?” and hangs up.The old man hangs up his phone and turns to his wife. “Sorted! They’re coming for Christmas –and they’re paying their own way”

Hi I’m Katie, I’m 17 years old and I’m a student in QQI level 3 Introductory Skills Training Class in the National Learning Network College in TRALEE.
Before I came here I was in mainstream secondary school with an SNA. When I was in Transition year I had to start looking at my future. I found mainstream secondary school really difficult, and knew I wouldn’t have been able for the standard leaving certificate.
I decided to explore further and I attended pathway fairs where I discovered the National Learning Network College. The very helpful staff told me and my parents all about the supports the NLN offer, small class sizes, rehabilitation officers, psychologists, learning support teachers, sensory room just to name a few.

I attended an introduction week in the NLN College and I absolutely loved it. I felt that I was included and listened to as the college is very inclusive and I knew this would be the perfect fit for me. I realized that I could get the education that I wanted to progress further and do it at my own pace with the supports that I needed… and this is exactly what I’ve done.
Since I started in the National Learning Network I’ve changed so much. If I was told 12 months ago that I would have had the confidence to travel up to Dublin & Cork to do private courses to become a qualified dog trainer working with search & rescue dogs, assistance dogs and have my own business, I would not have believed it was possible.
I’m also progressing my education privately and begin my Emergency Medical Technician course in September, once I’ve this done I will then progress further into paramedics.
